What will Giants GM Jerry Reese Do?

The internet is exploding with ideas and strategies about how the New York Giants should handle the 2010 NFL Draft. I have heard everything you can imagine thus far on who the G-Men should take with the 15th overall pick in this years draft. The fan favorites seem to lock in on two LB’s, Rolando McClain and Sean Weatherspoon. Some have suggested the Giants take the best available player at the 15 spot, even if that means drafting a defensive end, a position that isn’t really on the Giants “need list”. DT David Price is another name that has floated around for over a month now, well before Fred Robbins left to go to St. Louis. I have even heard some people clamoring for Jerry Reese to draft a running back in the first round.

As for me, I’m not sure what Jerry Reese is going to do. All I can do is look at the team and identify the weak areas where improvement is needed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to diagnose the fact that the Giants need a reliable middle linebacker. This is something that will be addressed one way or another. Everyone has their own list (in order) of team needs based on what they deem is most crucial. If all of the stud LB’s are off the board and it comes down to making a choice between what is left on the board and drafting for need, I would go with drafting another safety. Either Taylor Mays or Earl Thomas with the 1st round pick. I’m still concerned about Kenny Phillips’ health and the reality is we have only 3 safeties on the team, a mistake the Giants made last season that should not be repeated.

I still believe the solution is to get a MLB via free agency, plus the draft but to also bolster our safety position. This is just my opinion. What do you think?

The way I see it, we’ll get a MLB in the first round of the draft.

I’d love to add a veteran at that position, especially Kirk Morrison for a 3rd round pick seems fair, but taking from experience of the Giants drafts I think we’ll get someone via draft. Either McClain or whoever, Big Blue is all about building through the draft. Unfortunatelly, with our coaching staff, that means we’ll have to put up with Jon Goff and Chase Blackburn as staters all season.

The only scenario in which I could see a big trade is if Osi decides he wants out. In that event, we would try and get a MLB for him, and then draft a DE in the 1st round.

I agree. If he is available, Rolando McClain will be the pick and he will start out of the gate and be perfectly fine. I do not believe that the #15 pick will be used for need. McClain is the best player there regardless. The 15 pick is a luxury and Reese will take advantage.

Im going on record saying that if McClain is available in round 1 he will be the pick, start week 1, and receive votes for DROY.

      Book that.

I also believe that DT will be the round 2 selection. Tyson Alualu or Lamar Houston.

Last year we did go into the season with 3 safeties. One of them being Phillips. This year we have 4, one being Phillips. As of now, C.C. Brown is still on the team as the 4th safety. The Giants will not spend a first round pick on a safety no matter if they get a MLB or not. In 20 years they have spend 2 first round picks on a safety and they wont do it 2 out of 3 years, its just not in their organizational philosophy.

The only way they pick a safety in round 1 is Taylor Mays in which case he wouldn’t even be playing safety for The Giants, he would be a roving defender who we would attempt to revolutionize the game with.

I wouldn’t mind giving up a round 3 pick for Morrison either Saulo. I completely agree with you about trading Osi too. I do not think the Giants will trade Osi and I think Osi was just talking mad when he said what he did a couple of months ago. I expect him to be productive in 2010 but if they did decide to trade him, we better be getting a star in return. Thumbs up!

Good piece. All this talk of the draft has me exhausted lol. Bottom line is I trust Jerry Reese and we all should. Most all of his first round picks have been immediate contributers and his late round picks have almost all developed greatly. I don’t expect any different results this year.

I’m exhausted too lol but it needs to be discussed because it will all be over in a month. I’m not sure if I totally agree with you reply to Saulo about the rookie starting week one, even if it is McClain who we draft (which I hope it is by the way). However, I don’t think he will be available at the 15 pick.

I would take S Taylor Mays over S Earl Thomas as well. I’m completely with you on that. CC Brown is still on the team for some mysterious reason. I’m somewhat perplexed by this unless Perry Fewell places a tremendous amount of value on the nickel package.

I’m still keeping my eyes open for another free agent pickup. Teams are still dropping players by the day and sooner or later we will get a match I think.
