Tom Coughlin Wins ESPY for Coach of the Year

July 12, 2012

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, did you miss me? I have been taking a nice long break away from writing after winning the Championship and the emotional 2011 season. But I couldn’t help writing something about Tom Coughlin winning the ESPY for Coach of the Year, something he really deserves both as a coach and a man. I’m starting to get the itch to write again and could not think of a better way to re-introduce myself to the New York Giants nation, then with a Tom Coughlin article. It feels good to be back.

Let me stop now and officially say, Congrats Coach!

If you ask me, it has taken the media, the football world and even a lot of the Giants fans, way too long to warm up and recognize how good Coughlin is. A lot of the drama is caused by the morons at the major sports shows. The two Super Bowl wins in five years cannot be denied, they will win a third and be named a dynasty and you will still show no love, so let it be known then. I am very excited for this year and to see what a healthy squad can do over 16 games. This is a dangerous team when fully healthy and they just won the Super Bowl with a depleted roster. How about Jason Pierre-Paul? B-E-A-S-T!  I’m going to predict he gets over 20 sacks in 2012. I think rookie RB David Wilson is a very intriguing subject and so is WR Rueben Randle. I’m looking at DT Marvin Austin, CB Prince Amukamara, WR Ramses Barden, TE Martellus Bennett, TE Travis Beckum and WR Domenik Hixon to see what they can do. A lot fans are watching, even though they may be quiet right now but we are all rooting for you guys to have huge seasons. And so is Tom Coughlin and the front office. These guys can make a huge difference in the 2012 season when healthy and clicking with their teammates. They need a shot to do that.

I have always been a big fan of Coach Coughlin, I was never one to criticize him for bad games. By the way, at 65, Coughlin becomes the oldest coach to ever win the award. I have been vocal in the past about OC Gilbride and not caring for some of his play calling. I think this offense is a dynamic but steady OC away from winning two more Super Bowls. The G-Men have the talent, that is for sure, they could be a top offense for the next four to six years if utilized properly. I’m sure of two things about Coach Coughlin, one he is a football guy and two, he is a New York guy. He also looks out for the military and works with the Jay Fund charity, founded in 1996. As most of you know, even his son-in-law is a football player. Giants Pro Bowl OL Chris Snee. Snee will be included in the Giants ‘Ring of Honor’ once he finishes his career with Big Blue and forever be considered one of the best Giants lineman of all time. Without coaches approval, I doubt this marriage would have ever happened, so it’s nice to know that Coughlin is a good judge of character too. I love that the Giants owners continue to reward Coughlin on production with contract extensions, something else he deserves in my opinion. I look forward to seeing Coach on the sidelines for many years to come in the future and enjoy continued success under his watch.

How do you feel about Coach Coughlin winning Coach of the Year?

Would You Trade the Giants First Round Pick in the Draft?

April 11, 2012

NEW YORK – Hello Giants Fans, I was thinking about the draft and wondering what type of scenario would be acceptable when it came to trading away the 1st round pick. I think getting a 1st round pick and 3rd round pick in 2013 might be worth it. Maybe getting a 2nd round pick this year and 1st round pick in 2013 might be worth it too. It looks like Big Blue is trading away the 5th round pick this year for that Bengals LB Rivers. I have to read up on him but have heard he’s had injury issues. They also know they have two 4th round draft picks, because of the compensation pick. Once that news becomes official about LB Rivers, we can look at the draft board again.

The Giants are working on the offensive lineman and linebacker positions via free agency, just like we thought they would. Very smart move by Giants GM Jerry Reese and the front office. I love how this team is coming together already. Can the Giants strike gold late with a running back? Will the Giants draft for offense or defense with the first pick? Who will be the Giants 1st round pick? Will the G-Men trade their 1st round pick?

Let me just say that I do not think GM Jerry Reese will trade away any other draft picks, if he gives up the 5th round pick for LB Rivers. I’m starting to lean towards drafting the best available player in round one. I know this sounds strange because I keep adjusting to the new moves Big Blue makes. They are locking down an offensive lineman with veteran OL Sean Locklear and linebacker Keith Rivers via free agency. That means a cornerback or wide receiver in round one would not surprise me, since they are both very athletic positions. The Giants drafting the best available player would surprise me even less. They are squared away pretty good right now and still have time to work before training camp. The team looks deceiving until you realize how much talent is returning from injury. Some very good players will be back stronger then ever and ready to play some football. The Giants truly look like they are building a dynasty in New York.

What are your thoughts about having the final pick of round one? Is it worth holding onto or would you trade it away for more picks next year?

Giants Made Some Tough Decisions Over The Past 48 Hours

March 20, 2012

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, it’s a sad day because Big Blue has parted ways with WR Mario Manningham (2 year deal with 49ers) and CB Aaron Ross (3 year deal with Jaguars). I wanted to wait before writing this article to see if anyone else might be released or traded. I think this is a horrible situation all the way around. Manningham has become one of my favorite players and a guy that all Giants fans are rooting for to do well in his career. I’m concerned for Mario playing in San Francisco because of the system and fan base there. Once a Giant, always a Giant, just like I told him on twitter. I know Mario would have preferred to stay in New York and the fans love him for that even more. Mario was drafted by the Giants in 2008.

This feels exactly like it did last year, when the team lost a bunch of guys and some really big names (Smith, Boss, Seubert, O’Hara, etc). I’m not sure if I will ever get comfortable with this part of the game but I will have to prepare for it. The other big loss was CB Aaron Ross, who has played his entire career with the Giants since they drafted him in 2007. Ross stepped up his game last year and was a big part of their success. The Giants are clearly looking at first round draft pick CB Prince Amukamara to step in and back up CB Terrell Thomas and CB Corey Webster. Other CB’s signed include CB Michael Coe and CB Justin Tryon in the backup mix. I believe the Giants are fine at the CB position this year but if the past three years have taught Giants fans anything, it is to prepare for injuries. So adding depth to key positions is crucial to the game plan. They also heavily addressed the tight end position, which was considered an area of need. I’m sure that GM Jerry Reese (needs to be NFL GM of the Year) isn’t finished tinkering with the squad but I do believe the majority of out-of-house players have been locked down already. I expect them to focus on in-house guys from now until the draft with maybe one more outside signing. Remember, they have a lot of players coming back from injury.

Head Coach Tom Coughlin must be very excited for the new season and the upcoming draft in April. There is no quit in this man and winning becomes addictive after a while. The Giants can absolutely win another ring, in order to complete the “Dynasty” set of three rings for immortal status in the NFL. This group of guys can certainly do it. Still, it is bittersweet to have to say goodbye to class acts like Mario Manningham and Aaron Ross. On behalf of the nygreporter, I would like to say thank you and best wishes to both of these gentlemen.

What are your thoughts about the G-Men losing Manningham and Ross?

Giants Will Strike Quickly When Free Agency Begins in 24 Hours

March 12, 2012

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, the NFL free agency madness begins tomorrow. I fully expect GM Jerry Reese to have a plan in place, that will be put into motion when the clock strikes. His plan is already in motion, we are in motion right now, can you feel it? Areas that could be effected include the offensive line and the running backs. OL Kareem McKenzie might meet his replacement if reports are correct. RB Ahmad Bradshaw, RB DJ Ware and RB Da’Rel Scott should all be on the final roster. Who the fourth running back will be is a mystery. Expect Reese to dig out a solid RB from the draft in the mid-rounds. This could also be addressed via free agency where Big Blue could make a run for tier-two talent. Making a play for a solid tight end is not out of the question either. The offense would benefit from an experienced veteran at the position. An offensive lineman with experience would make sense as well. Some should check in on OL Shawn Andrews and see what he has been doing. The return of OT William Beatty will be a plus as well.

That about covers the offensive options in my opinion, on the defensive side of the ball, I see linebacker as the primary area of interest. If the Giants were to lock up DE Osi Umenyiora for 3 years and then spend a little on a solid linebacker via free agency, they may have something there. Of course, you have to include locking down LB Chase Blackburn for 3 years as well. Both of those guys are very important to what happens on the field on defense and special teams. It’s a smart move that makes sense, plus both guys want to retire as Giants one day and possibly make it into the Ring of Honor. You can go to bed at night knowing both of these guys will be worth what they are paid three years from now. DE Justin Tuck, DE Osi Umenyiora and DE Jason Pierre-Paul together for the next three years means at least one more Super Bowl ring for the Giants Dynasty Team. Another ring means all of the NFL “experts” and haters are silenced for a decade. And you know what? Eli is going to do it.

Expect Big Blue to strike like lightning and make a bold move early in the free agency period. When you have the last pick in the draft, 32nd overall, it makes sense to strike quickly in free agency to bolster your squad. At least it makes sense in my mind and justifies an aggressive approach from the onset. I am just as curious as the next guy about which direction they will take regarding talent and managing cap space. Bravo again to captain QB Eli Manning for restructuring his contract to free up over $6.5 million in cap space. What a team player and superb leader he is for this franchise and he has now become the Greatest Quarterback in New York Giants history in my opinion. Put it in the record books ladies and gentlemen. Speaking of quarterbacks, will the G-Men be looking into other backup quarterback options for Iron Man Easy Eli? Some reports say QB David Carr might be on his way out. I’ve always liked Carr and though he brought some stability to the backup QB position. We will find out soon.

Who are some of the free agent players you have your eyes on for the New York Giants?

nygreporter Celebrates 2 Year Anniversary, Thanks Fans

March 6, 2012

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, it’s been a couple of weeks since we last spoke. I took a nice, long break from writing. The last time we spoke it was Valentines Day and the time before that we were still talking about the Giants beating the Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI. The Giants players and staff gave fans the VIP ‘blue carpet’ treatment at the DVD release party yesterday. Thanks to Marc and Max over at Vivendi Entertainment and NFL Films for the invitation. I would also like to thank Brittany over at Taylor for the info on Giants legend Sam Huff. 5-Time Pro Bowler LB Robert Lee “Sam” Huff is being honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and AllState Insurance in Farmington, West Virginia on Monday March 12, 2012 at 5:30 PM at the Farmington Community Center. Check it out if you can make it to the Hall of Famers hometown for the festivities.

I can’t believe it has been two years already working with my own website. Of course, I have been writing all of my life in one form or another. I would like to thank our readers and let you know that I have officially signed on for another year to cover the Giants with this website. I will continue to keep this a family friendly environment and readers should fell free to leave comments on any of our stories, the more the merrier. The Giants are now 2-time Super Bowl Champions over the past five years, that still feels incredible to say and the haters have been out in full force with Cowboys fans going back to the 1990’s Dallas teams and comparing them. Philly fans are still in shock and awe about the atrocious display of football skills the Eagles broadcast LIVE worldwide to millions of NFL fans. Eagles fans just straight up hate, they pull no punches but can get annoying after a while. I haven’t heard a Redskin fan talk any trash since the 1980’s (Yes, I’m getting old, don’t worry about it). The G-Men and Easy Eli are elite.

Things have really been going well and I look forward to providing our readers with some in depth New York Giants draft coverage from my perspective. On a side note, I like the WR Domenik Hixon signing and I think our special teams just got a lot better. Slapping the franchise tag on Weatherford was music to my ears and all of the players on “Team I Got a Ring” too. Giants GM Jerry Reese gets big props for this bold move and extremely loud and incredibly close statement to the other players in regards to contract negotiations. That is a display of loyalty to the mad man punter Steve Weatherford as well. Hey, what can I say, the guy has become a fan favorite and we follow him on twitter (Follow back man @nygreporter). The dude is jacked and plays like a football player.

I hope WR Mario Manningham (What’s up Super Mario?) can resign with the team. The fans love this young man and he  is just starting to get a feel for the offense. The last place I would subtract from is familiar weapons for QB Eli Manning. I love the “Nicks Cruz Travel Agency: Destination Endzone” duo out there but they still need one more piece to the puzzle. I believe Manningham is that guy. I will be doing an article this week on player positions to look at in the upcoming draft in April. Until then, the New York Giants remain Super Bowl XLVI Champions, that is all.

Do you have any favorite moments from the past year at nygreporter? It’s a loaded question.

RD – nygreporter.com – Happy 2 Year Anniversary!

Super Bowl XLVI Final Game Notes of the Season

February 6, 2012

NEW YORK – That was one heck of a way to end a great season. The Giants defeat the New England Patriots 21-17 in Indianapolis. It took a fourth quarter comeback to win a second Super Bowl for Big Blue as QB Eli Manning wins his second Super Bowl MVP Award. Most seem to agree this win puts Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, you can include myself among them. There really is no way to describe the joy I’m feeling now and will feel for a very long time. I’m stuck someplace between numb and bursting with energy. Some where in between shocked and exhausted. I’m running on empty but so happy that it doesn’t matter at this point. The true blue fans have been waiting and anticipating this moment and when it finally arrives, it’s wonderful. So enjoy it!

Thank you to the New York Giants organization including the Mara and Tisch families. Thank you to Head Coach Tom Coughlin, the rest of the coaches and players. Thank you GM Jerry Reese, who has done an outstanding job, since taking over for Giants legend Ernie Accorsi. Go back and read all of my articles about Mr. Reese and you will see I have always been a fan of his work and have praised his draft skills and player transactions. Some of his moves however, had even me scratching my head this past offseason. In the NFL Lockout riddled 2011 year, players were coming and going at will in the NFL and the G-men lost some key players like WR Steve Smith, TE Kevin Boss, C Shaun O’Hara and OL Rich Seubert to retirement or contract situations. Then they lost CB Terrell Thomas, LB Clint Sintim, OT William Beatty, WR Domenik Hixon, LB Jonathan Goff and about ten more guys to the dreaded IR list (injured reserve). 2011 marks three straight years of injury epidemics for the G-men with at least 12 going on the season ending IR list, per year, that’s about 20% of the team going down for three straight years. But the Giants and Jerry Reese made all the right moves that had this team clicking by the end of the season. Congrats you are now Super Bowl Champions!

I thought singers Kelly Clarkson and Madonna did a good job with their respective areas of the nights entertainment. I thought NBC could have done a better job with the trophy presentation and post game stuff but thats why we have remote controls right? I also noticed audio problems coming from the NBC channel during the game. I suggest that Giants fans out there savor this moment and really enjoy this win for a couple of days. Do not get into any talks about the draft or who is signing what contract and when, just relax for a few days and enjoy winning the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XLVI Final Score: Giants 21 Patriots 17

February 5, 2012

NEW YORK – I think I’m going to sleep for a week straight after this season, which clearly took years off my life. A part of me is glad this game is over because that was a brutal two week wait. This is not my ‘Game Notes’ article, readers can come back in the morning for that article. This quick story is here simply to let our readers know what happened in the game. I plan on getting some sleep tonight but you never know where the night can take you when your team wins the Super Bowl. It wouldn’t be the first time either.

We knew this was going to be a major battle between two good teams. This game did not disappoint and had my heart in my throat the entire time. Including the 4th quarter comeback. Seeing the team and coaches celebrate up on the stage and kissing the Lombardi trophy is something that has me smiling from ear to ear. I am so happy for this team because I know exactly what they had to endure this season with all of the injuries and the slump. I’m very proud of the Giants organization and I thank them as a fan for winning two Super Bowls over the past four years. What a wonderful gift you have given the true blue fans and some fans never get to experience this kind of joy at all.

The New York Giants are Super Bowl XLVI Champions, it feels so good to say that. Fans can buy official New York Giants Super Bowl Champion gear from the banners on the right. Be sure to come back tomorrow and check out my ‘Game Notes’ article breaking everything down. I don’t know about you but I’m going to go celebrate for the rest of tonight! Congrats to the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants! Congrats to QB Eli Manning for winning his second Super Bowl MVP Award and Congrats to the fans who stuck by the team all season long and got to watch them win the Super Bowl tonight!
