Giants Should Induct Ernie Accorsi into the Ring of Honor

March 8, 2012

NEW YORK – I feel very strongly about this. The next class to be inducted into the New York Giants Ring of Honor should include former GM Ernie Accorsi in my opinion. Along with Accorsi, guys like RB Rodney Hampton, LB Pepper Johnson, DT Keith Hamilton, P Jeff Feagles and DE Leonard Marshall should be considered as well. They all deserve to be a part of New York lure forever. Coming off a Super Bowl winning season, it would be cool to have them all with Super Bowl rings of their own. I haven’t heard anything announced about the upcoming class but it certainly should be interesting. To be honest, at times I get a history lesson when an old timer is inducted and I have to do my research on them. It makes it more fun if you ask me.

There are a few other guys like QB Eli Manning, RB Ahmad Bradshaw, RB Brandon Jacobs, DE Justin Tuck, DE Osi Umenyiora, OL Rich Seubert, OL Chris Snee, John Mara, Steve Tisch, Pat Hanlon and C Shaun O’Hara who will be up in lights one day too. But people forget about Ernie Accorsi and the long term contributions he has made for the team, even beyond his retirement that continue to pay off for Big Blue. It is time for this man to be honored the proper way, even if he doesn’t want it. I hope that the majority of Giants fans already know what I mean and agree with me. For the Giants fans that have “heard of him” but don’t know about him, you really need to read about this man. He is a legend in New York football.

I was one of the fans who were concerned when Mr. Accorsi handed over the team to current GM Jerry Reese. Not because I was worried about Reese but because I was so comfortable with Accorsi. Jerry Reese certainly can be considered one of those contributions to the team that continues to pay off. Accorsi gave Reese his full blessing with the brass at Big Blue, which made for a smooth transition for young buck Reese. And make no mistake about it, Jerry Reese has since made a name for himself and flourished with managing premium talent. He is particularly surgical with the NFL draft and just like his predecessor, has won me over. I trust his choices and know that he is trying to field the best possible team at all times. Yes, Giants GM Jerry Reese will certainly be added to the Ring of Honor one day but maybe not before, Head Coach Tom Coughlin.

Right now, we have the 2012 NFL Draft, 2012 Giants Minicamp, OTA’s, Schedule releases and analysis and a bunch of other interesting Giants news coming up. Be sure to come back and check it out!

Do you think Ernie Accorsi deserves to be inducted into the New York Giants Ring of Honor?

Big Blue Adding Five to Ring of Honor on Sunday

November 30, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants have announced that they will be adding five players to the Ring of Honor on Sunday. This tells me that MetLife stadium will be buzzing with the ghosts of old and the stadium should be electric. The Giants plan on inducting LB Carl Banks, TE Mark Bavaro, RB Alex Webster, LB Brad Van Pelt and P Dave Jennings. On behalf of the nygreporter, I would like to say congratulations men, this is a well deserved honor for some of the biggest names in Giants history.

I have had the pleasure of seeing some of these guys play and meeting a couple of them (Bavaro, Van Pelt) let me tell you, Mark Bavaro and Carl Banks are two of the best Giants of all time. They must have saved inducting them for this year in order to generate interest using high profile stars, spreading them out if you will instead of including them all in the initial 30 honorees. It makes sense but to the true blue Giants fan, there is no need for these types of things, we will be there no matter who is inducted. Once a Giant, always a Giant! Let’s take a look at this group of men and congratulate them.

2011 New York Giants ‘Ring of Honor’ Inductees

1. LB Carl Banks - All-time New York Giants legend, 2-time Super Bowl Champion, Pro Bowl selection.

2. TE Mark Bavaro - All-time New York Giants legend, 2-time Super Bowl Champion, 2-time Pro Bowl selection.

3. RB Alex Webster - Webster was born in Kearny, New Jersey, the local product was a 2-time Pro Bowl selection.

4. LB Brad Van Pelt - Van Pelt was born in Michigan and died there in 2009. A fan favorite, he was a 5-time Pro Bowl selection.

5. P Dave Jennings - Jennings was born in New York and spent 10 years with the G-Men. He is a 4-time Pro Bowl selection.

SIDENOTE: I am proud to announce that nygreporter will eclipse the 50,000 mark for unique visitors this weekend. I would like to say thank you to all of our readers!

Giants Need to Break Out the Ugly Stick Against Rams

September 19, 2011

NEW YORK – It doesn’t matter how the Giants win tonight against the Rams, they just have to win. All that matters is that they avoid the dreaded 0-2 start and build some confidence going into their second divisional battle next Sunday against the Eagles. I’m not advocating any dirty play by Big Blue mind you, I am simply saying they need to man handle those guys and take the victory. I have already said that I believe the team needs to win every game from here on out leading up to the bye week (week seven). If the Giants lose tonight, things are going to get very interesting in New York.

The Giants are still dealing with a ton of injuries and will need the younger players to step up. This is your wake up call, you are an NFL player now and the team needs you. I believe the team has enough talent to win this game but there a few factors that need to come together. First, the special teams group needs to play better. They need to play like their jobs are on the line because they should be at this point. Second, the offensive play calling needs to be more aggressive and less predictable. Third, QB Eli Manning needs to get out of the funk he has been in since the preseason and get back to the player we all know he can be. I’m beginning to wonder if he is getting enough rest at home after having his first child. He seems sluggish and unfocused at times out there. If the three factors I’ve mentioned here can come together, I think the Giants will win the game tonight and get back on the right track for the season.

I recommend that all Giants fans watch this game tonight. I’m sure I do not need to tell the “true blue” fans that but there is an extra incentive for fans to check it out. The Giants will be honoring the 25th anniversary of the 1986 New York Giants Championship team that won Super Bowl XXI. That 86′ team is widely considered one of the best NFL teams ever. It is without question a top three all-time team and some may argue they are number one overall. The Giants will have a special halftime ceremony to honor the players and fans can even grab an autograph if they attend the game. Former Giants players will be located at all four entrances and available for autographs from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST. Be prepared for long lines and additional security measures.

The game itself starts at 8:30 PM EST and the weather is expected to be clear and around 60 degrees. If you have kids, you might want to bring a jacket for them (and yourself) if you plan on attending the game. My final score prediction is Giants 27 – Rams 21.

What is your final score prediction for the Rams game tonight? Leave comments below.

The Giants Celebrate 25th Anniversary of Super Bowl Victory

June 12, 2011

NEW YORK – The 1986 New York Giants are widely considered one of the best football teams to ever play the game. The team won the Super Bowl (XXI) that year under head coach Bill Parcells and a coaching staff that reads like a roster list of legendary NFL coaches. The Giants defeated the Denver Broncos 39-20 and to the “true blue” Giants fan, this is the greatest team that New York has ever fielded. The Big Blue Wrecking Crew has a ton of Hall of Fame players on the roster and a player that many say is the best to ever play the game in linebacker Lawrence Taylor. The reunion will take place at the Meadowlands Exposition Center today June 12, 2011 from 8:00 AM through 4:00 PM.

Giants linebacker Harry Carson made it his personal mission to get all 53 players from the 1986 roster to the reunion celebration. Mr. Carson was successful in is efforts but could only get 51 out of 53 of the players. QB Jeff Hostetler (party pooper) will not be able to make it as well as a backup running back. The team is meeting right now to celebrate as a family and I’m sure these two players will regret missing an event like this. The 1986 team had a private dinner last night to reminisce in peace about that great moment in New York history. It won’t be very private at all today, fans get to mingle with the stars and share their stories of glory and most likely, take a peek at a Super Bowl championship ring. Reports said that fans paid up to $200 dollars for the chance to hang out with the legends today. These are some lucky fans, I wish I could have been there for this celebration too.

Giants fans can look for great photos and coverage of the event via twitter for instant access or check out Giants.com for additional coverage. They have already started to tweet some great photos and they will continue to do so throughout the event. I’m sure the official Giants website will have a great recap as well. Be sure to stop by there at the end of the day too. On behalf of everyone here at the nygreporter, I would like to say Congrats and thank you to everyone who played on the 1986 team for making me the huge Giants fan that I am today.

Do you think the 1986 New York Giants are the best NFL team in history?
