NEW YORK – Things have really started to heat up with the lockout situation (currently 133 days). I haven’t seen this much hype since the presidential elections. We’ve got information coming in from all over the country, both from the owner negotiations and also from players hometowns and such. It is absolute madness and it might not be over today as some expect. The NFL owners approved a deal yesterday (meaning the owners agreed with each other on a deal to show players) and handed it over to the players. This means if the players accept the proposal, teams will go back to work as early as tomorrow when they open the team facilities. Sounds great right? The only problem is that players have come out saying the NFL owners sneaked in some new stuff before handing the deal to the players. Shame on the owners for playing dirty and being sneaky porkers.
After a night in which twitter exploded with theories and speculation from the sports community, we rise to a new day. So what happens now? It is hard to say but the owners have waited so long to introduce this proposal that it really puts everyone in a bad situation. The players will not accept something they think is unfair and there simply isn’t enough time to start this whole process over again without canceling games. Just like they did last night when they cancelled the Hall of Fame game which was to be played on August 7, 2011. Roger Goodell has said that if a deal isn’t reached by this Wednesday (7/27/11), more games will have to be cancelled in the preseason and it could seriously jeopardize the regular season beginning on time. My question to the NFL owners is simple, why the heck did you wait so long to hand over a proposal which has directly put everyone in this time crunch situation? Was there no sense of urgency to get this done? The only way a vote gets done today is if the NFL owners alter the current deal they gave to the players.
Meanwhile, we have Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw talking in the news about going to the Miami Dolphins. That is not encouraging news at all. Reports say the G-Men will be about $11 million dollars over the salary cap once the lockout ends and that they will need to make some tough decisions. The Giants are simply going to have to trim the roster and everyone knows it. What we don’t know is who is going to be let go or traded. Some of the more prominent names who could become salary cap casualties are DT Barry Cofield, DE Osi Umenyiora, RB Ahmad Bradshaw, WR Steve Smith, RB Brandon Jacobs and DE Mathias Kiwanuka. There are more players at risk but these six scare me the most. I do not want to lose any of these guys but the reality is that at least one of these players will not be with the team in 2011, maybe even two or more. Following the madness of keeping star players on the team, the G-Men will then have to focus on signing the rookies, who they haven’t seen play on the field yet.
Giants owner John Mara has said that he hopes to have the naming rights to New Meadowlands stadium sold before the season starts. Most reports think the new name will be the MetLife stadium, which I absolutely hate. I have not heard one Giants fan mention how they liked that name. In the age of corporations, it was nice that fans still had Giants stadium and Yankee stadium out there. It gave fans the feeling that their teams were above selling out to the corporate animals. I understand the situation is different with the leech Jets sharing the stadium but we can dream, right? It will always be Giants stadium to me.

NEW YORK – We’ve had some interesting reports come out this week concerning Giants players. QB Eli Manning has been particularly visible and vocal this week. Manning continued to hold the player workouts in different locations around the East Coast and was very clear when asked who he would rather have as a teammate between Plaxico Burress and Tiki Barber. Not surprisingly, Manning chose Burress. He was also featured in a commercial with his brother Peyton that was hysterical. I wrote an article about it and suggest you check it out if you missed it Eli & Peyton Manning star in Football Cops because it is really funny. Safety Antrel Rolle was also in the news doing a ESPN podcast and DE Osi Umenyiora continues to discuss his contract situation to anyone who will listen. You can’t blame the guy for wanting to get his paper right.
The Giants have also been discussing selling the naming rights for Giants stadium. So far, it looks like they are getting fans ready to call New Meadowlands stadium the MetLife Stadium. I do not like the name personally because I feel it reflects the New York Mets, which I am not a fan of. Most fans agree that JetBlue Stadium or Green Giant Stadium would be a better fit but neither company seems to hear the battle cry. There is still no word about the 2011 training camp and where it will be held. The NFL lockout has now reached 110 days and if it continues any longer, the Giants will surely cancel their annual trip up to Albany. I expect an announcement to come either this Friday or sometime next week about this situation. The Giants simply can’t wait any longer to protect the preparation process for players and coaches. The Giants also announced that they will be hiring special teams assistant coach Larry Izzo once the lockout ends.
OL Shawn Andrews went on vacation in the Turks and Caicos islands. Andrews is one of the most vocal players on the team and can be found on twitter most days chatting it up with fans. I hope the Giants realize what a true social media machine he has become for the team. CB Terrell Thomas held a football camp for kids out in California this past weekend too. He was joined by a few teammates including CB Michael Coe and WR Ramses Barden. It is nice to see Giants players getting involved with communities and also seeing them support each other in their efforts. Great job guys! That is all I have to report for now. There isn’t much football news these days but I’m sure this will change by next week when some really important decisions will have to be made.

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, are you interested in meeting some of your favorite football players? For the first time ever, Lord and Taylor in Manhattan will hold it’s inaugural Chalk Talk series dealing with professional sports athletes. They will be celebrating the launch of former Giants linebacker Carl Banks’ clothing line called GIII. So of course, two-time Super Bowl champion Carl Banks, will be on hand for the fans to meet. For the youngsters out there who don’t know who Carl Banks is, all I can say is read about NFL history. Mr. Banks played on one of the best defenses in the history of the NFL. He played alongside Lawrence Taylor, George Martin, Pepper Johnson, Leonard Marshall and Phil Simms just to name a few.
Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will also be in attendance. I expect a lot from Osi during the 2010 campaign and see no reason why he cannot dominate from the end position. He certainly looked like the Osi of old, when he helped the Giants christen their brand new $1.6 billion dollar stadium last night with a victory. The Giants beat the Panthers 31-18 in their inaugural home opener at the new stadium. Osi had a sack and forced fumble in the game, not too shabby.
Both Carl Banks and Osi Umenyiora are Super Bowl champions and have three rings between them. If the fans are lucky, maybe the guys will be wearing their bling at the appearance, so all of the kids can see what a Super Bowl ring looks like up close. Both of these men have also made a trip to Hawaii as pro bowl players, a big honor for NFL players. On another note, NBC’s Bruce Beck will be attending the launch as well, just in case there are any media groupies out there.
My personal opinion about this event is simple. This is clearly a great opportunity for fathers and sons to bridge the gap between generations. Having a Giants player from Dads generation, LB Carl Banks and one from the current generation, DE Osi Umenyiora in the same room, is a rare occurrence. I would like to thank Lord and Taylor for keeping us in the loop and for confirming that they are true blue nygreporter fans!
I have taken the liberty of reading the fine print and would like to let you know exactly what you need to do if you plan on attending. First, there is a $50 minimum purchase involved with getting past the velvet ropes to the players and the fine print also stated that the purchase needs to be made beginning at 5PM EST at the Chalk Talk area.

NEW YORK – FINAL SCORE: Giants 31 Panthers 18.
The New York Giants and Carolina Panthers met at New Meadowlands stadium to christen the new house and exact some revenge on the pesky boys from Carolina. Both teams did not disappoint because this was a very competitive game. The Panthers were leading 16-14 at halftime and both teams never stopped fighting. The second half belonged to the Giants as they dominated in most areas to run the score up to a 31-18 lead and the win. This is a great way to start the season.
This was a game the Giants absolutely had to win for themselves and the fans. Deep inside every Giants fan, they seek revenge for the games lost to the Panthers over the past five years. The defense certainly looked a whole lot different from the one we saw in 2009. Most notably, in the secondary. The Big Blue D gave up a few big plays but managed to oppress the Panthers offense enough to allow Easy Eli an opportunity to win the game. The special teams still need a lot of work after an atrocious performance. If they are going to be successful in 2010, they will need to sort this out and quickly.
The game was sloppy and I did not like all of the penalties against Big Blue. You cannot give away that many yards and not have it bite you at some point in the game. There were also way too many turnovers in this game, both teams combined for nine turnovers. Still, the Giants start the 2010 NFL season at 1-0.
Let’s take a look at some of my game notes and please feel free to leave a comment below.
– QB Eli Manning played a very good game despite getting almost no help from his WR’s. Manning threw for 3 TD’s 3 INT’s 263 yards.
– Too many dropped and tipped balls by the Giants WR’s, this was the theme for this game. All three of Eli Manning’s INT’s were from tipped balls.
– TE Kevin Boss left the game in the first quarter with a concussion and neck injury. He did not return to the game.
– LB Chase Blackburn was helped off the field in the second quarter with a sprained knee. He did not return to the game.
– DE Mathias Kiwanuka (2 sacks today) is playing like a man possessed this year. He is playing his best football right now, sit back and enjoy it.
– The Giants were penalized way too many times (9/95 yards), for way too many yards in this game.
– The Giants turned the ball over four times in this game. This is not acceptable and it’s amazing the Giants won the game.
– The Giants won the Time of Possession battle with a time of 34:39.
– WR Hakeem Nicks explodes for 3 TD’s and 75 yards, he easily gets my game ball. This was a breakout game for Nicks in week one.
– The Giants running game was non-existent against the Panthers until the fourth quarter. This has become an area of concern.
– The Giants defense played a very good game despite giving up some big plays. the G-Men finished with 4 sacks, 3 INT’s and 2 Forced fumbles.
– Rookie punter Matt Dodge had another shaky performance (including a blocked punt in the fourth quarter). He will need to be more consistent to remain on the team.
– Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell is very involved with his players on the sidelines and gives off a lot of good energy to the players.
– DE Justin Tuck ran out of the tunnel with a Giants firmans helmet on, he ended the game the same way.
– CB Aaron Ross did not play in todays game.
– Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin looked like a rocket about to take off when the team headed inside for halftime, down 16-14.
– The special teams had a below average performance and Coach Tom Quinn will need to get his guys on the same page soon.
– New York Giants legend George Martin, announces he will hold 2nd annual Journey for 9/11 walk on October 17, 2010.
– Kicker Lawrence Tynes had a good game making all of his FG’s and extra point attempts.
– WR Mario Manningham had a very good game with 4 catches for 85 yards. He has been making some spectacular catches for Big Blue since last season.
– RB Ahmad Bradshaw had a poor game until the fourth quarter where he exploded for the majority of his 76 yards and a TD.
– RB Brandon Jacobs had a mediocre game (44 yards on 12 carries), even by his own standards I’m sure. Most notably, he couldn’t get in during the fourth quarter from the one yard line.
– The Giants closed this game out as a true team. This is something that I haven’t seen since the 2007 team.
– The Giants defense (Osi) knocked Carolina Panthers QB Matt Moore out of the game in the fourth quarter.
– CB Terrell Thomas (1 INT) had a great game despite a missed play or two. He made a crucial INT at the end of the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Giants.
– S Antrel Rolle led all tacklers for the Giants defense and seemed to be around the ball on most plays.

Hello Giants Fans, Today is Autograph Night (practice is from 3:35-4:35 PM EST) at the Giants training camp in Albany!! Fans will be able to meet the players and get their autographs. It’s a great day to bring the kids and support the Giants.
It is hard to believe but week one of the 2010 training camp is almost completed. There are now exactly fourteen days until the camp wraps up on August 20, 2010. What is even more crazy is the fact that the G-men play the Jets in their first preseason game in ten days at the new stadium. The Giants and Jets will meet on August 16, 2010 at 8PM EST in a Monday Night Football showdown. Football fans understand that this is the first preseason game of the year and that it will probably not be very competitive. The starters will not play longer then one quarter and it may even be for a single series.
Training camp has been going very well for Big Blue. Coach Coughlin mentioned the wide receiver group recently saying that they need to pull it together a little bit. I would not worry about this, I believe it is more player rust, then actual concern over ability. Rookie DE Jason Pierre-Paul continues to gain praise from the coaching staff and players. Center Shaun O’Hara is battling a nagging ankle injury and has missed most of training camp thus far. The Giants started using full pads this week and I’m sure the trainers want to be cautious with some of these players.
WR Hakeem Nicks scared the heck out of everyone after he hyperextended his right knee. Two MRI’s later in New York City and Nicks was cleared and back in Albany the next day. The Giants cannot afford to lose a player of Nicks’ caliber on offense and I’m sure the team let out a collective exhale at the good news. QB Eli Manning continues to be a rock for the team and is beginning to get in the zone as time goes on. There has been no mention of the achilles injury he suffered in 2009, so I’m assuming that he feels fine and will be good to go in 2010.
Tom Coughlin has a group of players who are on a special list that will only allow them to practice once per day. Those players include DT Jay Alford, WR Hakeem Nicks, TE Kevin Boss, LB Keith Bulluck and DE Osi Umenyiora. All of these players had recent injuries and they require special attention during training camp until they are fully healthy. WR Mario Manningham and S Deon Grant have also both missed the past couple of days at practice with groin injuries. S Kenny Phillips is still hoping to fully recover before the start of the 2010 season, while S Antrel Rolle is easing into his leadership role with the DB’s. They will not hold two a day practices today, only the one practice on the field from 2:25-4:35 PM EST.

Hello Giants Fans,
There have been some extremely interesting items in the news this past week or so regarding the Giants. The most recent being the news of Plaxico Burress’ release date of 2-3 weeks from prison on a work release program. The possibility of bringing Burress back to the Giants is very unlikely, unless he wants to play for the league minimum with zero guarantees. Would you take Plaxico Burress back if he could get in shape by the game, following the bye week? At the league minimum for eight games? What would you do?
Giants fans everywhere have been waiting all day for the Hakeem Nicks news. Nicks was sent to a Manhattan hospital to be checked out for a possible hyperextended leg. The team is expected to discuss this more when they know more about it. Losing Hakeem Nicks for any length of time would be a huge loss for the team. He is a favorite sleeper among fantasy football owners for 2010 and had a very good rookie year last season. So far, it looks like the MRI says he is fine.
I must also add that Mike Francesa did an absolutely wonderful show yesterday LIVE from the New York Giants training camp. What a treat is was for Giants fans to see all of those interviews with the players and coaches and owners. Mike always does it right and that is one show that every Giants fan looks forward to. The nygreporter was on his Giants training camp show last year as a call in. Mike and I talked about the Giants time of possession game and how it could effect their overall record. If you recall, the Giants defense on paper in 2009 was off the charts before all of the injuries started happening. Some like him and some don’t but I think he is a good guy.
– In other sports news today, New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez, hit his 600th home run today off of Shawn Marcum in the 1st inning of a day game against the Blue Jays, at Yankee Stadium. He is only the seventh player in MLB history to reach the No.600 HR plateau and he is also the youngest to ever do it at 35 (his birthday was last week). Congrats Alex!

Let’s take a look at some of the recent news about the New York Giants.
– WR Hakeem Nicks is sent to a Manhatten hospital from training camp. The MRI comes back fine.
– WR Plaxico Burress to be released from prison in 2-3 weeks on a work release program. He will seek to play in the NFL once again.
– QB Eli Manning looks as calm and cool as ever. He is having a good camp and I expect him to improve on his 2009 numbers.
– LB Phillip Dillard continues to impress his peers and coaches with his natural leadership abilities. Dillard is very animated and vocal when talking to the defense.
– DC Perry Fewell is an extremely good coach. He was very thorough when I saw him at camp on Monday. He confirms that he will be experimenting until the regular season begins.
– S Kenny Phillips begins the season of the PUP list. He dresses for practice but does not participate. He looks to return soon.
– LB Keith Bulluck is bringing some of the nasty back to Big Blue. If he remains healthy in 2010, the Giants got a steal. Plus, Bulluck really wants to play in New York.
– Rookie S Chad Jones was put on waivers, then cleared waivers and is now on the Giants non-football related injured reserve list.
– The Giants signed veteran S John Busing to bolster their safety corps.
– The Giants are awarded DE Alex Hall off waivers from the Eagles.
– OL Rich Seubert has not had a beer in five days.
– RB Andre Brown looked fast and fluid during the morning practice. He will be fighting for the third strong job for now.
– CB Aaron Ross has been back on the field and playing well so far. it was good to see him running around out there during practice.
– Rookie DE Jason Pierre-Paul continues to get rave reviews from the coaches and players.
– DE Osi Umenyiora has matured to a level where he can’t be touched. I expect a terrific year for the new and improved humble Osi.
– Rookie punter Matt Dodge continues to get some coaching from the legend Jeff Feagles. I hope the Giants hire him full time.
– Backup QB Jim Sorgi was a bit shaky when I saw him during the morning practice on Monday. The backup QB spot still concerns me.
– The YES network’s Mike Francesa Show, did a LIVE broadcast yesterday from the New York Giants training camp in Albany.
– Head Coach Tom Coughlin is impressed with how many players arrived at camp in shape. He also said the team has a lot of work to do in a very short period of time.
– The Giants did not practice on the field today. They remained indoors at meetings and the weight rooms.
– The Giants will have their first “full pad” practice tomorrow on 8/5/10 at the University of Albany.

The New York Giants had a couple of players hit the newswire today. Rookie safety Chad Jones has finally left the hospital after weeks of painful surgeries and rehabilitation. Jones will not be able to play during the 2010 NFL Season and was placed on the IR list.
Jones’ situation (not you Jersey Shore Mike) reminds me of RB Andre Brown and what he had to endure his rookie season. Brown is healthy this year and eager to do his thing on the field. Do not sleep on Andre in 2010, he can still prove to be the steal of the 2009 NFL Draft, like some experts have predicted. Jones will also miss his entire rookie year and have to concentrate on a long rehab process. Get well soon Chad.
Going to the defensive side of the ball now, DE Osi Umenyiora was told by doctors that they recommend hip surgery. Osi took the recommendation and discussed things with the team but has decided to wait for the surgery. The doctor (Marc Philippon) is well known in the sports world and recently did A-Rod’s hip surgery, among other stars. This could explain why the front office drafted DE Jason Pierre-Paul in round one of the 2010 draft. That is a move that had some fans scratching their heads. Once again, there are things going on that we might not be aware of, so it’s best to trust the opinions of those who have the entire story. Have faith in the coaches and staff. I’m sure that all of the Giants fans are behind you Osi and want you to get healthy.
The Giants still have to concern themselves with the status of star safety Kenny Phillips. Kenny was quoted as saying he felt great and ready to hit the field during training camp. Big Blue will have an extremely dangerous tandem with Phillips and Rolle, proceed with caution NFL receivers.
– In other NFL news, WR Terrell Owens has signed a one year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Well for this week Giants fans, I thought I’d show off a little of my hometown roots. By that I actually mean I’m going to show my disgust with the fact that the Philadelphia Flyers actually made it into the Stanley Cup. We don’t usually discus other sports here at NYGReporter.com but if you’re curious I am a Giants fan (duh), a Nets fan (unfortunately), a Devils fan, and a Yankees fan. To see the Flyers crush my guys in the beginning was hard enough, but there are so many band wagon fans down here that it is almost unbearable. To make matters worse, I have heard on several accounts how “similar” the Giants run to Super Bowl XLII was in 2007 to the Flyers run this year. I mean it is a little, the Flyers have key injuries the Giants had key injuries, blah blah blah. I don’t want to hear Philly fans compare themselves to Big Blue, unless of course they have a no-name guy head out on the ice and bounce the puck of his head and into the goal. Until that happens, the Giants will always be first and best.
In other more important news, reports are coming in that Justin Tuck, the Giants all-star defensive end, who was recently referred to as the Giants best defensive play (commence arguing among yourselves) is doing great and the shoulder is feeling better by the day. Tuck suffered a torn labarum from an intentional trip by former Cowboy Flozzel Adams, and depending on who you ask, Tuck was playing at about 60% all season long in 2009.
Continuing with Tuck, the defensive end was somewhat vocal in questioning the Giants early picks in Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph, fellow defensive linemen. Since then Tuck has had a chance to see them do drills and really work out and he has changed his mind. He indicated that he was biased in his early opinions, but now acknowledges their incredible athleticism and welcomes them with open arms to the Giants family.
And now the news you’ve all been waiting for, the league will vote tomorrow as to whether or not New Meadowlands will host a Bowl in 2014, and looks as though chances are better than good. John Clayton of ESPN is even calling them 100%. Although it won’t be the first time in recent memory that a Super Bowl will be played in a cold weather city, it will be the fist time in a long time that it will be played outside. The game would be very beneficial to paying off some of the leftover financial obligations the stadium brings, and even maybe bring in some naming rights competitors. Overall I think it will be great for the city and really open up the game to any climate, as it should be. What do you think the back lash will be if it snows during the game in 2014 when being held at the New Meadowlands Stadium? Should be interesting!

Hello New York Giants fans, I thought we could take a look at current team and make some predictions. That means we hope to get some interaction with our readers and hear your opinions as well. You may not agree with us or some of the comments you read here but we ask that everyone remain respectful. I am going to be as honest and respectful as I can about the upcoming season. Let’s keep in mind that these are predictions and this is simply an exercise in entertainment. Enjoy!
– The New York Giants will finish the 2010 NFL season with a 11-5 or 12-4 record.
– The New York Giants will finish in 2nd place of the NFC East (Dallas wins out).
– New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will improve on his career year numbers in 2009 (4,021 yards and 27 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 93.1 QB rating) and make the NFL Pro Bowl in 2010.
– The New York Giants will make the playoffs in 2010.
– The New York Giants will win their first game of the 2010 NFL Playoffs.
– The New York Giants will lose their second game of the 2010 NFL PLayoffs.
– New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks will set a single season record for receiving yards and yards after catch (YAC yards).
– New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks will make the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl.
– New York Giants linebacker Clint Sintim will have a break out season.
– New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs will rush for over 1,000 yards and have 10 touchdowns in 2010.
– New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell will give Big Blue a top five defensive backfield in 2010.
– New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle will make an immediate impact on the team.
– New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will man up and have a career season in 2010.
– New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw will have 200 plus rushing yards in a single game.
– New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith will beat his receiving numbers from the 2009 NFL season and make the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl.
– New York Giants wide receiver Ramses Barden will finish the 2010 NFL Season with 10 or more touchdowns.
– New York Giants will have a new punter named Matt Dodge when the 2010 NFL Season starts.
– The New York Giants will cut kicker Lawrence Tynes at some point during the 2010 NFL Season or immediately following it.
– New York Giants defense will rank in the top 10 during the 2010 NFL Season.
– New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas will make the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl.
– New York Giants will have five players make the 2010 NFL PRo Bowl.
– New York Giants General Manager Jerry Reese will win “GM of the Year” for the 2010 NFL Season.

NEW YORK – Things have really started to heat up with the lockout situation (currently 133 days). I haven’t seen this much hype since the presidential elections. We’ve got information coming in from all over the country, both from the owner negotiations and also from players hometowns and such. It is absolute madness and it might not be over today as some expect. The NFL owners approved a deal yesterday (meaning the owners agreed with each other on a deal to show players) and handed it over to the players. This means if the players accept the proposal, teams will go back to work as early as tomorrow when they open the team facilities. Sounds great right? The only problem is that players have come out saying the NFL owners sneaked in some new stuff before handing the deal to the players. Shame on the owners for playing dirty and being sneaky porkers.
