NEW YORK – Most of our readers know what a sports special is for this website. It is when we cover something outside of New York Giants football but New York related news. New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada retired this week (1/24/12) after 17 years in the majors. I don’t know how many dozens of games I’ve seen him play in over the years at the stadium. He always handled himself with class and was a true leader in the locker room. He lead by example and was a good friend to his team mates. I think Jorge has a good plan with spending this summer with his family. I realize some of our readers might not be Yankee fans but I am and this is a significant moment in Yankees history. All that fans can do is wish him well on the rest of his journey in life. It’s so rare that a player sticks with one team their entire career these days, it’s refreshing to know it hasn’t vanished altogether from Major League baseball. We salute you Jorge.
Don’t even bother asking me if Jorge Posada should be in Cooperstown, my answer is yes. What do you think I’m going to say? Bernie Williams belongs in the Hall of Fame too, along with Don Mattingly and the body of work for the game of baseball he’s put together. But this story is about Jorge Posada, thank you Jorge for all of your years in pinstripes and leaving the game on your own terms. You will forever be known as one of the all-time greatest Yankees in New York history. It simply will not be the same without you on the team. God bless you and your family.
Did you know that Derek Jeter was Jorge Posada’s best man at his wedding? It’s true.
Here are some of Jorge Posada’s accomplishments.
5X World Series Champion
5X All-Star Player
5X Silver Slugger Award Winner
17 Years with the Bronx Bombers
7X American League Champion Pennants
1990 Drafted by New York Yankees
If you’re a Yankee fan, what is your favorite memory of Jorge Posada?

NEW YORK – It is time for another nygreporter sports special. Our readers know these sports specials are about the world of sports in general and not specifically about the Giants. They are usually about a New York team or player but could be about anything sports related and from anywhere in the world. Today, I would like to discuss a guy named Mo, maybe you have heard of him. Mariano Rivera is the best closer to ever play the game of baseball, period. On September 19, 2011, during a beautiful day game, Rivera collected his 602nd save to officially make him the all-time saves leader in Major League Baseball. He also has 42 post season saves that do not count towards the regular season total. Congrats to Mr. Rivera, who is one of the classiest guys in the game and one of my favorite all-time players.
Let’s take a quick look at Rivera’s numbers. I expect these numbers will change rather quickly but as for today, here there are. Mariano is a 12-time All-Star, 5-time World Series Champion, 1999 World Series MVP, the all-time MLB leader for saves (602), the MLB all-time leader in post-season saves (42) and the MLB leader in finishing games (881). He has also won a ton of other awards but these are the big ones in my opinion. Not a bad resume at all and the guy already has 40 saves this year. It is amazing that after all of these years, opposing batters still get chills when they hear the “Enter Sandman” song blasting out over the speakers. I am so glad that I was able to watch his entire career from start to finish. Guys like Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams and Andy Pettitte were my generations Mickey Mantle, Thurman Munson, Lou Gehrig and Joe D. Rivera is also the last player allowed to wear the #42 jersey which has been retired throughout baseball in honor of Jackie Robinson.
It seems like just yesterday, when the Yankees debuted a right hander named Mo but it was actually 16 years ago in May of 1995. Since then, there has been no better closer in baseball and fans were able to see a legend perform on the field every summer in ballparks across America. For most Yankee fans, Rivera will forever be remembered for his cutter, for breaking bats and his cool demeanor. He was always more concerned about winning games then he was about personal achievements. I have an authentic Mariano Rivera baseball jersey in my closet. It takes a lot for me to go out and buy an authentic jersey in any sport because they cost so much. A player must also be exceptional for me to want to wear their name or number on my back. Rivera is one of those players and I wish he could play the game for another 20 years. He is truly a New York Legend.
I have my own personal story about Rivera to share with you now. Actually, I have dozens of stories about seeing Mo get saves LIVE in front of me but one stands out most of all. It was October 27, 1999 and I was in the Bronx for Game 4 of the World Series. You may remember, the Yankees beat the Braves 4-1 in Game 4 that year and I was in the House that Ruth Built when it happened. Roger Clemens was on the mound and beat John Smoltz (both Cy Young winners) while Mariano Rivera closed out the game for the save and sweep of the Braves. Rivera was also named the Series MVP. It is without a doubt the greatest single LIVE sports moment of my life. To be there for “the moment” my favorite baseball team won a Championship is the stuff we all dream about as kids. Thanks for the memories!
Do you think Mariano Rivera is the best closer to ever play baseball?

NEW YORK – It doesn’t matter how the Giants win tonight against the Rams, they just have to win. All that matters is that they avoid the dreaded 0-2 start and build some confidence going into their second divisional battle next Sunday against the Eagles. I’m not advocating any dirty play by Big Blue mind you, I am simply saying they need to man handle those guys and take the victory. I have already said that I believe the team needs to win every game from here on out leading up to the bye week (week seven). If the Giants lose tonight, things are going to get very interesting in New York.
The Giants are still dealing with a ton of injuries and will need the younger players to step up. This is your wake up call, you are an NFL player now and the team needs you. I believe the team has enough talent to win this game but there a few factors that need to come together. First, the special teams group needs to play better. They need to play like their jobs are on the line because they should be at this point. Second, the offensive play calling needs to be more aggressive and less predictable. Third, QB Eli Manning needs to get out of the funk he has been in since the preseason and get back to the player we all know he can be. I’m beginning to wonder if he is getting enough rest at home after having his first child. He seems sluggish and unfocused at times out there. If the three factors I’ve mentioned here can come together, I think the Giants will win the game tonight and get back on the right track for the season.
I recommend that all Giants fans watch this game tonight. I’m sure I do not need to tell the “true blue” fans that but there is an extra incentive for fans to check it out. The Giants will be honoring the 25th anniversary of the 1986 New York Giants Championship team that won Super Bowl XXI. That 86′ team is widely considered one of the best NFL teams ever. It is without question a top three all-time team and some may argue they are number one overall. The Giants will have a special halftime ceremony to honor the players and fans can even grab an autograph if they attend the game. Former Giants players will be located at all four entrances and available for autographs from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST. Be prepared for long lines and additional security measures.
The game itself starts at 8:30 PM EST and the weather is expected to be clear and around 60 degrees. If you have kids, you might want to bring a jacket for them (and yourself) if you plan on attending the game. My final score prediction is Giants 27 – Rams 21.
What is your final score prediction for the Rams game tonight? Leave comments below.

NEW YORK – As our readers know, every once in a while we do a sports special here at nygreporter. These are stories away from the usual New York Giants news but extremely relevant in the world of sports. These stories mostly revolve around the New York sports scene. Our current story is no different. Today we congratulate a true Yankees legend and overall sports legend, New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter.
Derek Jeter hit number 3,000 in dramatic fashion this afternoon by hitting a home run off David Price in the 3rd inning to tie up the game 1-1 against the Rays. The fan who caught the ball, Christian Lopez does the right thing and gives the ball back to Jeter and asks for nothing in return. The Yankees respond by giving the kid a ton of free stuff including 4 championship seats for the rest of the season. The baseball world is full of Yankee haters but even the most jaded baseball fan has to respect Derek Jeter and what he has meant to the game of baseball in general. Derek is a first ballot hall of famer and will have a plaque in beautiful Cooperstown, New York one day. His resume reads like every little league baseball players dream career. He was the 1996 Rookie of the Year, 5x World Champion, 12x All-Star player, 5x Gold Glove winner, 4x Silver Slugger winner, 2x Hank Aaron award winner, World Series MVP, All-Star game MVP, Member of 3,000 hit club and a ton of other awards and nominations too numerous to list here.
Derek Jeter is my generations Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth if you are a Yankee fan. I have watched him play his entire career from the very first game back in 1995 and have seen him do things that nobody has done before. DJ has spent his entire career with the New York Yankees and he will end his career with the Bronx Bombers one day too, the fans love him for that. He remains the benchmark for class and success for every kid who picks up a bat or glove. Mr. November is without a doubt one of the greatest baseball players to ever put on a uniform and nobody can deny this fact.
I’m writing this during the Yankees game being played LIVE right now and wouldn’t you know it? Derek Jeter just hit a double to go 3-3 on the day thus far (3,001 hits) and we are only in the 5th inning. So far, he has hit a single, a double and a home run. He is only a triple away from hitting for the cycle. The guy is simply amazing.
I would like to personally congratulate Derek Jeter on his legendary accomplishment. It’s too bad we have to get old DJ!

The New York Giants, looking to increase their first winning streak in a year, face the NFL’s punching bag of the last few seasons, the Detroit Lions (1-4), at home in the new Meadowlands Stadium. Easy matchup, one might think. That is where a mistake can be made. As I said, this is a trap game.
The Lions, although having only one win in the season, have more fight in them than meets the eye. Just looking at the games this season, out of the 4 losses, it is very easy to see that those games were not decided until the very end.
In the season opener against Chicago, a blown call nullified a Calvin Johnson touchdown that would most likely assure the win for Detroit.
Then you move on to analyze the Eagles game, and the story continues. The Lions scored a touchdown with 1:55 left, made the two-point conversion, putting the game at 35-32, then on the ensuing kickoff they recovered an onside kick. They were not able to capitalize on that, but again the game was decided on the final seconds.
Against Green Bay, a team that is supposed to be one of the finest in the NFC, once again Detroit was able to push the game until the fourth quarter, the final score being 28-26. These three games could have easily gone either way, and Detroit could be, say, a 3-2 team, just like our beloved Giants.
With that in mind, it is paramount to stay focused and duly prepare for this game. As it is said quite frequently in this organization, “every game is important“. The way the Giants have been playing is impressive and inspiring, however, paraphrasing Antrel Rolle, it is always better to win three in a row than two in a row.

Hello Sports Fans,
In our second segment of the “NYG Reporter Sports Special” (major global sports news), we take a look at a truly rare feat in sports history. Four days ago in the Bronx, New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez, hit his 600th home run out of the park, in the first inning against Shawn Marcum and the Toronto Blue Jays. He finally did it after the longest drought between HR’s for the No.600 group members with 46 at-bats between HR’s (his 17th of the season). As if written for a made for TV movie, he hit home run No.600 exactly 3 years to the day from when he hit No.500. Spooky stuff huh? He will need to keep that 100 HR per 3 year pace going to become the king, something he could realistically achieve in 6 or 7 seasons.
I am a Yankee fan and I was happy that Alex hit that home run in Yankee stadium (monument park to be exact). The ballpark needed something to cheer for as 2010 has been particularly hard on the Yankee family. Because both owner George Steinbrenner and announcer Bob Sheppard, passed away within days of each other during the summer of 2010.
Alex became just the seventh player in baseball history to reach the No.600 plateau. He was also the youngest player ever to achieve this benchmark at 35 years old, which he had just turned a week earlier. It is hard to believe that A-Rod has played 17 seasons in the major leagues.
I wanted to wait a few days before I covered this historical accomplishment because of the backlash I expect. Everyone here at the nygreporter would like to say Congrats to Alex! I think it is a shame that the steroid era has tarnished this accomplishment in some writers minds. Most fans of the game will be rooting for Alex to do well but almost all of them still shake their head when the topic of steroids comes up. Alex was a man about the situation and admitted it but it is still something that will follow him where ever he goes. I say it is in the past and everyone should leave the man alone and let him do his job.
If you take a look at the all-time home run list below, you will see that Rodriguez is only nine home runs away from taking sole possession of sixth place by surpassing Sammy Sosa. This is something I think A-Rod is more then capable of doing this year. However, he will have to wait until next year to take over Ken Griffey Jr and the fifth spot at 630 home runs. Again, something that A-Rod is very capable of doing. For a guy who is clearly aging well, A-Rod might be able to play another decade.
Rodriguez was originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 1993 and he was born in New York.
Most Home Runs All-time as of 8/8/10:
1. Barry Bonds – 762 HR’s
2. Hank Aaron – 755 HR’s
3. Babe Ruth – 715 HR’s
4. Willie Mays – 660 HR’s
5. Ken Griffey Jr. – 630 HR’s
6. Sammy Sosa – 609 HR’s
7. Alex Rodriguez – 600 HR’s
8. Frank Robinson – 586 HR’s
9. Mark McGwire – 583 HR’s
10. Jim Thome – 577 HR’s
Do you think 3B Alex Rodriguez will end up as the all-time home run king by the end of his career? Will he hit 763 home runs?
Alex Rodriguez awards received:
1996 – AL Batting Champion
2001 – AL Home Run Champion
2002 – AL Home Run Champion, AL RBI Leader, AL Gold Glove-SS, AL Hank Aaron Award
2003 – AL MVP, AL Home Run Champion, AL Gold Glove-SS, AL Hank Aaron Award
2005 – AL MVP, AL Home Run Champion
2007 – AL MVP, AL Home Run Champion, AL RBI Leader, AL Hank Aaron Award
2009 – World Series Champion
1996-2009 – 10-time Silver Slugger award winner
1996-2010 – 13-time All-Star roster member
