The New York Giants have signed safety John Busing, adding some help to their depleted safety group. This is a smart move on the Giants part and I like to see a backup DB or WR, who can also contribute on special teams, which I imagine Busing will be used for quite a bit. Busing (6’2″ 220 pounds) is a four year NFL veteran who has played for the Houston Texans and the Cincinnati Bengals. Reports say that the Giants brought him to the minicamp back in May, so they must have been looking ahead by working him out. He played college ball at Miami, Ohio and now has a shot at a permanent roster spot.
There is no denying the fact that the Antrel Rolle signing was huge. If it wasn’t clear to some of the fans back then, it should be now. The Giants have recently announced that Kenny Phillips will not be able to start practice (PUP list) and we know that rookie safety Chad Jones will be out for the year after his car accident. Giants GM Jerry Reese is clearly determined not to allow teams to pass against them, the way they did in 2009. He is giving new DC Perry Fewell the tools he needs to get the job done.
Rookie safety Chad Jones cleared waivers and will be put on the Giants Non-Football injury list. This is good news because Jones was highly regarded coming out of college. He is a very heavy hitter and someone the G-Men thought would compliment Antrel Rolle nicely, if Phillips could not make it this year. It just so happens, that neither Phillips or Jones will be available. This should be the last we hear about the safety position until Kenny Phillips is healthy enough for a full return to the game.
DE Jason Pierre-Paul has the only remaining roster spot available, as the Big Blue roster is currently at seventy nine players. Everyone expects JPP to sign sometime tonight before training camp starts tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!
