The New York Giants re-signed two players on this April Fool’s Day (I hope everyone got a laugh from my Eli Manning post earlier in the day, it’s all in good fun lol). This in NOT a joke. Punter Jeff Feagles and Guard Kevin Boothe re-signed with the team today, terms were not disclosed as of yet. This will be Feagles eighth season with the Giants, in a career that began way back in 1988. Feagles is widely known as the best directional punter to ever play the game. The recent rub on his game, has been the fact that his punts have lacked the distance of past years. I am glad we were able to retain his services and I’m curious to see how he responds after having one of the worst seasons of his career. You could do a lot worse then having this future Hall of Famer on your team.
The signing of G Kevin Boothe shows that Jerry Reese is aware of the fact that the team needs to get deeper on the offensive line. Boothe is a serviceable player who can come in as a backup or in certain situations. This will be the native New Yorker’s (he was born in Queens) fourth season with Big Blue, after playing one year with the Raiders back in 2006. I expect Jerry Reese to draft at least one offensive lineman during the 2010 NFL Draft later this month. He may even draft two OL’s, one in the top three picks and one in the bottom three picks. The NFL Draft is about 3 weeks away now and I’m sure all of you Giants fans can’t wait for that. Personally, I can’t wait for the draft to come either.

I wanted to post this tonight, so that members could view this great Steve Adubato interview with George Martin. Some of you have known me for a very long time and know how much I support what this man is doing for the 9/11 first responders. I have written 2 full articles about Big George and unfortunately, my efforts to get him a key to New York City did not work out. George Martin is just an incredible man and I hope you enjoy checking out this interview. I will add another full story, at a later time, with all of my opinions and thoughts about this true American Hero. The New York Giants have been back in the stadium for about a week now getting ready for next season. They have been attending the voluntary off season workouts (I use the term voluntary loosely here) in preparation for the 2010 campaign. The official site of the New York Giants had a bunch of videos recently posted there showing brief interviews with players. Everyone seemed very up beat and happy to get back to work. There was a great sense of pride on behalf of the players, who were interviews in the new facilities. The new locker room caught my attention on more then one occasion because it is so much of an upgrade from the old Giants stadium locker room (I had the pleasure of checking out the old locker room before they tore down the old stadium).
The best news I heard from all of the interviews, was the fact that the running backs seem to be doing much better. We talked about the Running back situation a little bit in our previous story called New York Giants: Danny Ware are you? Hearing that kind of positivity straight from the mouths of the players helped me relax. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw in particular, seemed to be ready to get going, almost eager to start the season. These guys play with a lot of pride and you could almost see the enormous chip on their shoulders as they spoke to the reporters. I like that, in fact I think the whole team will be playing with a chip on their shoulders this season. Last year was an embarrassment to the team and something they will surely rectify in 2010.

The soap opera surrounding All Pro Giants DE Osi Umenyiora is becoming distracting. Giants fans are reading reports about him participating in the voluntary off-season program, otherwise known as, get to the stadium if you know what’s good for you. The coaches are giving him praise and have clearly said that they want him to remain on the team. Tom Coughlin not guaranteeing Osi a starting position is nothing new. Every year you can count on one thing when training camp starts and that is a sound byte of Coughlin saying that “competition is good”. Coach Coughlin believes in fair and honest competition and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, I am on Coughlin’s side with this one. The only person on the team, who I think you can honestly say is guaranteed a starting position, is QB Eli Manning.
I think the media is turning Osi into an issue. I think Osi is very happy in New York and just needs to shrug off a bad year in 2009. It happens to the best of them and how he conducts himself from this moment forward, will show what his character is made of. It seems like these media guys are constantly trying to get a “money shot” or “money quote” from Osi. Leave the man alone and let him go about his business is what I say. These same media guys will be all over his jock when he gets 15-20 sacks this season and re-emerges as a top tier defensive end. The guy missed an entire season not too long ago and needed some time to get his mojo back. His ego was bruised with embarrassment because of his down year and that is why reporters got some crazy statements from him at the end of last season. I think he will prove a lot of people wrong this year and I am glad the Giants organization will be keeping him.

The New York Giants resigned defensive end Dave Tollefson yesterday to a one year contract. Tollefson has spent the past three seasons with the G-men, after being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2006. This is a good sign that Jerry Reese is paying attention to the pass rush and wants to keep his DE’s deep. With Justin Tuck and Osi as the clear starters, it’s nice to know we have Kiwi as a primary backup to the stars. Kiwi is someone who could probably start on most NFL teams right now. Behind those three guys we have some depth with Tollefson, Canty who can play both DT and DE and Tommie Hill. Much to my surprise, the defensive end position is not as deep as I thought it was. The Giants have 5 DT’s and 5 DE’s with Canty as a flip flop guy who can play both spots. That’s 11 players between the two positions with only 5 true DE’s. I would not be surprised to see Jerry Reese bring in another DE via free agency.
The Giants might look to grab another hybrid type of player in the upcoming NFL Draft. Someone who can play both the DE and DT positions like Chris Canty. Some have said that just because the Giants have signed Tollefson, a restricted free agent, there is no guarantee that he will still be on the team when the season starts. After taking a look at the roster, I think it is more then likely that he will be. Tollefson knows the system and has been a serviceable player thus far. The Giants also have a bunch of players on the cusp of being signed.

Coach Spags has done it again. First the news came out about him signing DT Fred Robbins and now he has signed former New York Giants CB Kevin Dockery. Dockery spent 4 years with the G-Men and was beginning to blossom into a serviceable cornerback with the team. Does this latest move mean that Jerry Reese will now have to target a cornerback and a middle linebacker via free agency? I have to admit that I am a bit surprised by this move. Cornerbacks are difficult to come by and I thought he would remain on the team. Just goes to show you how much us fans know lol. The Giants are making so many off season moves, that this is beginning to resemble a re-building year. What else does Jerry Reese have up his sleeve?

The internet is exploding with ideas and strategies about how the New York Giants should handle the 2010 NFL Draft. I have heard everything you can imagine thus far on who the G-Men should take with the 15th overall pick in this years draft. The fan favorites seem to lock in on two LB’s, Rolando McClain and Sean Weatherspoon. Some have suggested the Giants take the best available player at the 15 spot, even if that means drafting a defensive end, a position that isn’t really on the Giants “need list”. DT David Price is another name that has floated around for over a month now, well before Fred Robbins left to go to St. Louis. I have even heard some people clamoring for Jerry Reese to draft a running back in the first round.
As for me, I’m not sure what Jerry Reese is going to do. All I can do is look at the team and identify the weak areas where improvement is needed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to diagnose the fact that the Giants need a reliable middle linebacker. This is something that will be addressed one way or another. Everyone has their own list (in order) of team needs based on what they deem is most crucial. If all of the stud LB’s are off the board and it comes down to making a choice between what is left on the board and drafting for need, I would go with drafting another safety. Either Taylor Mays or Earl Thomas with the 1st round pick. I’m still concerned about Kenny Phillips’ health and the reality is we have only 3 safeties on the team, a mistake the Giants made last season that should not be repeated.
I still believe the solution is to get a MLB via free agency, plus the draft but to also bolster our safety position. This is just my opinion. What do you think?

The New York Giants signed a new punter yesterday. His name is Jy Bond and he is from Australia. Signing the 30-year old Bond, sends a message to current Giants punter Jeff Feagles. Jeff Feagles is going to be in the Hall of Fame one day, there is no question about that. He is about as reliable a punter as the NFL has ever seen and probably the best directional punter ever. The problem is that Jeff Feagles is 44 years old and father time has taken it’s toll on him (like so many other great players). He hasn’t been able to get the distance the team would like to see the past couple of years and last season might have been the worst in his career.
No one can argue the fact the G-men are taking this off season extremely seriously. Jerry Reese has been methodically improving the team piece by piece. He was not joking around when he said he would be aggressive this free agency period. As a fan, I have to say that I am both impressed and in agreement with every move the team has made thus far. I would have liked to have kept QB David Carr as our backup QB but that was a situation, that was out of the front offices control. This is going to be a very different team that takes the field in 2010. We are going to have to wait and see how quickly the players can bond (pun intended) and get down to business as a unit. I can already see the headlines and sound bytes comparing him to James Bond, Mr. 007 himself. That is, if he is still on the team when the season starts.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of our Irish readers here at NYG Reporter. I made a cup of coffee today and decided to check out the available linebackers in free agency AGAIN. I saw that fan favorite Kirk Morrison is still available as well as D’Qwell Jackson. I also noticed a name that all Giants fans are familiar with, Nick Grieson. It got me wondering if the G-men will really pick up a linebacker via free agency or if there is a big trade on the horizon in New York. I’m sure that new DC Perry Fewell will be able to make the most of the players he gets. I just do not think the Giants would be willing to place all of that responsibility on a rookie LB or a linebacker that they feel they are “settling” on via free agency. This leads me to believe that a big trade is coming before the season starts. The Giants have no choice but to find a new defensive general.
So then I started thinking about the possible trades the Giants could make, in order to upgrade their soft spot in the middle of the defense. This is where I hit a wall. The Giants need a true star and leader at the MLB position. They need an Eli Manning on defense to lead by example and bolster that group of players. In order to get a star of that caliber, Big Blue would need to give up a serious player and probably some draft picks. Who do you think would be worth trading away and what player would be worthy of giving up so much for? There aren’t very many star linebackers in the league at the moment and the ones who are, will certainly not be available for a trade. And I now find myself back to square one. This is the most confusing aspect of the Giants off season moves in my opinion. This is a critical piece to either find success or have another mediocre season.

The New York Giants and New York Jets will be doing a coin flip to decide who gets the first home game at the New Meadowlands Stadium. I read this earlier in the day and thought for sure something was wrong. I was sure that since the Jets got the honor of playing the final home game in the old Giants Stadium in 2009, then the G-men would have the honor of opening up the new one in 2010. Apparently, the Jets no longer want to be considered the Giants little brother and are making a stink about it. I expected more from the franchise that was allowed to play in Giants Stadium for all of those years.
Reports are claiming that the G-men are taking the high road in this battle and keeping their thoughts in house. The Jets on the other hand are making it known publicly that they want the game. I think the Giants will agree to the petty coin flip the Jets are proposing, win the coin flip and end up opening the new stadium anyway. Fate and Karma have a way or making everything OK in the end. It would be a shame to have the Jets play the final game at the old Giants stadium and then play the first game at the new stadium. Something just doesn’t seem right about that. The stadium will no longer have the name “GIANTS STADIUM” in big glorious letters across the building marque but make no mistake, this is still the home of the New York Giants first and foremost. The Jets were riding the wave of Big Blue for many horrible years when they struggled and didn’t have a home of their own. The Giants have won three Super Bowl Championships since the glory days of Broadway Joe and the Giants are the premiere football team in New York.
With that being said, I guess it doesn’t really matter who plays the first game in the new stadium. This is about principals and class now. Both are areas where the G-Men pride themselves in maintaining at all times.
