Just Talking About New York Giants Football

Hello Giants Fans!

Things have been extremely quiet in the football world lately, not including the usual Brett Favre chatter of course. I took a little mini-break during this quiet time and figured I’d enjoy the peace while it lasts. We haven’t heard any New York Giants news in a week but I anticipate this week to heat up by Friday. The Giants first round pick, DE Jason Pierre-Paul, still hasn’t signed with the team and that is something that can happen at any moment. Their second round pick, Linval Joseph has yet to sign also. The team is now only 10 days away from the beginning of training camp in Albany, New York.

Kenny, Kenny, Kenny. What is going on with Giants star safety Kenny Phillips? This is a question that has been lingering, like a thorn in my mind. I cannot overemphasize how important having Kenny Phillips on the field would be for Big Blue. He is a game changer and a very good athlete. If the front office has been coy about his status and he returns full boar, then the Giants have quietly put together the best safety tandem in the NFL.

Time heals all wounds they say, so I’m anxious to see how pro bowl DE Osi Umenyiora performs in 2010. The front office has clearly made a statement by drafting rookie DE Jason Pierre-Paul. I’m not sure why Giants writers feel the need to include this fact when Osi’s name is brought up. I think I understand why. Osi if you’re reading this, tell me if it makes sense to you. Giants fans still have Osi ranked the number one DE in their minds. Not everyone feels this way but a good portion of them do. The writers and fans haven’t given DE Justin Tuck the reigns completely yet and still know what you’re capable of. Osi is young and has had ample time to recover from his injury a couple of years ago.

I’m extremely curious to learn what defense new DC Perry Fewell intends to use. I found it promising that he was experimenting during minicamp this year. Some have mentioned a tampa 2 defense and others have said he will switch to a 3-4 defense. I’m not sure about those drastic changes but I would anticipate those scenarios to all be a part of the arsenal Fewell intends to employ. This guy looks like he mixes it up and keeps opposing offenses guessing. I do however expect him to be more aggressive then former DC Sheridan was. You cannot blame a guy for attacking when his back is against the wall and I think if Sheridan had done that a few times, he might still have his job. Probably not but you never know.

What I’m about to tell you is extremely disturbing, parental discretion is advised. Former Giants safety CC “Can’t Cover” Brown has come out in the news and said that the New York media controls the New York Giants. Really CC? Why would you want to go there? We understand your fighting to put food on the table in Detroit but let’s be honest, you had a poor year in 2009. In fact, the entire team has a poor year and yes, you were a part of that team. The New York Giants are one of the classiest organizations in all of sports with a deep history and tradition. You owe the team, front office, owners and the coaches an apology. I could have taken a very mean angle on this topic but I want to give CC the benefit of the doubt, because a lot of what happened last season was not his fault.

Giants Waive WR Hixon, Sign WR Adam Jennings

The New York Giants continued to work on their roster today by making a couple of moves. The Giants cut WR Domenik Hixon and have signed WR Adam Jennings. Domenik Hixon would have missed the entire 2010 NFL season with a torn ACL injury he suffered during this years minicamp. Hixon was used primarily for special teams and served as a backup WR with the team. He ranked among the best in the NFL in 2009 for punt returns. Getting cut is not exactly a motivator to endure the painful rehab process but I’m sure he will be ok. I doubt that this is the last we will see of Domenik Hixon.

The entire Giants nation wishes Hixon a speedy recovery and best wishes in all of his future ventures. Hixon spent four years with the New York Giants and has a Super Bowl ring as a nice parting gift from Big Blue.

There isn’t much news on new WR Adam Jennings (5’9″ 176 pounds), except to say that he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 2006 and has not seen much NFL action. He played college ball at Fresno State and was drafted in the sixth round. He was particularly good as a kick returner and signed with the Detroit Lions in 2008. With the loss of Chad Jones, Domenik Hixon and Chris Davis it’s nice to see the team getting some muscle added to the special teams. Welcome to New York Adam.

Training camp begins in two weeks and you can be sure that the special teams will be under the proverbial microscope the entire time.

Could Ex-Giants End Up Coaching Current Giants?

While I wrote a previous article today on current events surrounding Big Blue, I began to think about two players that recently retired today. Both are former Giants players, MLB Antonio Pierce and P Jeff Feagles. There has been some mention by Giants fans of the team asking Jeff feagles to coach the punters. I cannot think of a better punting coach in the entire NFL, except maybe the coach that worked with Feagles himself.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Feagles were to take a year off, then come back as a Giants coach next season. It would probably sound something like this, assistant special teams coach. Feagles has played in 352 NFL games during his hall of fame career and punted the ball over 72,000 yards. He retired after 20 years in the NFL following the 2009 season. He spent seven of those years with the New York Giants.

No offense to current linebackers coach Jim Herrmann but Antonio Pierce would make a good coach someday himself. I’ve even heard some scuttlebutt about Pierce making a fine defensive coordinator one day. How much of this is true is up for debate but the man certainly knew the game of football. There isn’t a hater out there that can deny AP that respect. I’m not sure if he is ready to be a DC just yet, let the man get his feet wet first. I can absolutely see him as the Giants linebackers coach right away though, helping this young group of LB’s take their game to the next level. AP is a natural leader and I hope his TV career is short lived so he can return to New York as a coach next season.

Who knows if any of this will ever happen but it was worth checking out the possibility. I doubt if Pierce would give up good money on TV, to making less as a coach but you never know what can happen. I do believe that coaching will be in AP’s future no matter how the next couple of years turn out to be.

2010 New York Giants: NYG Notes 07-10-10

Hello Giants Fans, I thought we could take a look back on a busy week and make some notes. We are now only 3 weeks away from the beginning of training camp in Albany and still questions remain. Big questions. Like the annoying fly buzzing around a room, the middle linebacker position continues to evoke concern in Giants fans. The team has talked about LB’s Goff and Blackburn taking over for AP and have also mentioned rookie LB Phillip Dillard. Speaking of Antonio Pierce (AP), our former defensive general has officially retired from the NFL to work a gig at ESPN. Good Luck from the NYG Reporter AP!

We are now on the cusp of beginning training camp and the football news world is dead. This cruel summer dead zone happens every year. The floodgates will open for writers in three weeks, when the 2010 training camp starts. Until then, we will have the Pierre-Paul and Joseph contracts to discuss. We may have some roster moves to work with too. I expect the team to bring in another WR or CB before camp begins.

Another question people aren’t really discussing is, how will all of those 2009 injured players come back from their ailments? The G-men had a ton of players who were banged up and almost a dozen who landed on season ending IR. Two players that I’m very interested in seeing are DT Jay Alford and RB Andre Brown. Hopefully, they have both completely healed from their injuries and can contribute in 2010.

Let’s take a look at some of the recent summer news about the New York Giants.

– The 2010 New York Giants training camp begins in 3 weeks.

– Antonio Pierce officially retires from the NFL to join the ESPN TV crew.

– Rookie safety Chad Jones continues to recover from his season ending car accident. Get well soon Chad.

– Giants LT David Diehl rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Friday 7-9-10.

– The New York Giants have signed five of seven 2010 draft picks so far.

-The Giants still haven’t signed their first round pick DE Jason Pierre-Paul.

-The Giants second round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft Linval Joseph remains unsigned as well.

– The Giants Special Teams have lost two players for the season already.

– The Manning family held their annual passing camp in Louisiana.

– Giants WR Steve Smith has asked for a new contract. He is scheduled to make $550,000 in 2010.

– The 18 game expansion for regular season games is still a hot topic in New York.

– Questions still remain about safety Kenny Phillips’ status and condition. Get well soon Kenny.

– Giants WR Hakeem Nicks has been putting in some extra work during the offseason.

– New defensive coordinator Perry Fewell continues to win the respect of his players and earn praise from the front office.

Hey Giants, What’s Wrong With WR David Tyree?

Hello Giants fans, let me ask you a question. What is wrong with WR David Tyree? Besides owning the greatest play in Super Bowl history, many might have forgotten that David Tyree was a pro bowl player at one time. Not only that but he went to the pro bowl based upon his special teams performance. The guy is not over the hill having just 7 NFL seasons under his belt and can be an electrifying game changer at the strangest moments (see SB XLII). He is 30 years old, 6’0″ 206 pounds and has won on the biggest stage in the world.

There must be something wrong with him physically for the team not to be grabbing him for a one or two year deal. There are no illusions here, he would serve as a backup WR and a special teams leader. I’m not sure if he can run as fast as he did in 2005, when he went to the pro bowl but he is certainly worth taking a look at. Invite him to training camp at the very least. The New Jersey native and former 6th round pick (2003) knows the local area and knows the G-Men very well.

I would like our readers to participate in this article and tell me what you think. Our previous article listed some possible free agent acquisitions. I find it difficult to believe that WR Chris Brown, offered Big Blue more then what David Tyree can offer. Give the man a chance to fail his own physical I say. He is a fan favorite and it shows that you gave him the respect of a physical and training camp invite. I would love to know once and for all what the main reason is for David Tyree not getting a shot at making the team. Could this be over something personal? Sure it can be but I doubt it. It has to be something regarding Tyree’s physical condition (most likely his knee).

We all know that he was hanging around the locker room earlier this year and it seemed like he had the itch to play. I know one thing for certain, if he were to come back to the Giants, the fans would welcome him with open arms.

Giants Should Look Into These Free Agent Players

The New York Giants are going to have to bring in a player at some point, before the 2010 training camp begins in three weeks. I found a few interesting names that were on the free agent list. If these players are somehow signed or have a status change by the time you read this, then check my words and leave a comment.

What I am trying to do here, is list players who might be a very useful backup at their position but used mostly on special teams. As we all painfully know by now, the Big Blue special teams have a few issues. I say strike now and get the team a impact player. You never know how these things are going to turn out. Sam Madison and RW McQuarters served the G-Men well and they aren’t exactly spring chickens (no offense guys) but they are Super Bowl Champions.

I have reserved my opinions/picks for only two positions and they are the cornerbacks and the wide receivers. I will list four free agent players from both of those positions. Hopefully, the Giants can afford to pick up one of these players from the list and if they get two players, then thats even better. I feel that these two positions will serve the team best as far as having backups. These are two crucial positions and quite frankly, the Giants need some special teams help right now.

– CB Frank Walker – 5’11” 200 pounds – 7 years NFL experience – 28 years old (two year deal IMO)

– CB Fred Smoot – 5’11” 185 pounds – 9 years NFL experience – 31 years old (two year deal)

– WR David Tyree – 6’0″ 200 pounds – 7 years NFL experience – 30 years old (one year deal IMO)

– WR Kelley Washington – 6’3″ 217 pounds – 7 years NFL experience – 30 years old (one year deal IMO)

– WR Justin Jenkins – 6’0″ 207 pounds – 3 years NFL experience – 29 years old (one year deal IMO)

– WR Roy Hall – 6’3″ 240 pounds – 3 years NFL experience – 26 years old (two year deal IMO)

* I also like CB Philip Buchanon, 5’11” 186 pounds 29 years old 9 NFL seasons, who was released this off season too.

Be sure to go back and read the article again and remember we are talking about reliable depth at the CB and/or WR positions. These players would see a ton of time on special teams if they made the roster.

Happy 4th of July Weekend Giants Fans

Hello Giants Fans,

On behalf of the NYG Reporter, I would like to wish all of our readers a very Happy 4th of July. It is fantastic that we can all celebrate our country’s Independence Day with family and friends in peace. We must remember the soldiers fighting all over the world to make this peace at home a reality. I applaud and salute all of the members of the US armed forces and thank them for their sacrifice.

I hope that our readers enjoy this special weekend with baseball, BBQ and beer or whatever your family tradition is. I’m not going to make this a long article, we simply wanted to say Happy 4th of July weekend!

New York Giants Are 30 Days Away From Day 1

The New York Giants are now officially 30 days away from the first day of training camp. The 2010 training camp dates for Big Blue are August 1, 2010 – August 20, 2010 and will be held at the University of Albany once again. This is going to be a particularly exciting off season with some incredible battles expected on the defensive side of the ball. There will be a brawl at the linebacker position between ten guys looking to start. There still isn’t a clear leader in the middle linebacker group. This is one of the most important jobs on the team and a slot that most thought would have been filled already by a free agent at this point in the year.

I would not be surprised if our readers saw another article from us by the end of the day, discussing a new free agent pick up or player signing.

The defensive end position will be next on the list with four quality (three proven) defensive ends and only two starting roles. Giants DC Perry Fewell has been experimenting with four down defensive ends and I applaud him for it. I would not use that as a standard formation but it might not be a bad idea to mix it into both, first and third down situations. Great start versus drive killer. We have seen this before with Coach Spags back in the day and it works. Both equally good elements to throw into the game and the G-men certainly have the talent to use this set up.

The defensive tackles are solid players and getting DT Jay Alford back this year will bolster an already strong group. The rookie DT Linval Joseph might contribute right away I’ve heard and  I’m anxious to see him on the field. I talked a lot of junk at this point last year about the Giants defensive line having the talent to be the best in the NFL. The team as a whole performed below expectations and I was wrong about the d-line. That was mostly due to the injuries the team had to endure. In 2010, I think this group can perform beyond the bar I set for them in 2009. The Giants defense is stacked.

The defensive backs are going to have their own little skirmish going on back there. The Giants prize signing of 2010, Antrel Rolle, will be a starting safety but who will be the other? Michael Johnson and Deon Grant will be battling it out for that role now that rookie safety Chad Jones is out for the year. If safety Kenny Phillips is healthy, all bets are off and he gets the starting role but questions still remain about his health. We all hope that Phillips can start but nobody knows for now. CB Aaron Ross participated in minicamp on a limited basis and will be returning from an injury plagued year that had him sidelined for almost all of 2009. It would not surprise me to see Giants GM Jerry Reese sign a cornerback, safety or linebacker within the next week or two. Possibly even tonight. What do you think?

Giants Cut WR Chris Davis For Failed Physical

The New York Giants cut WR/PR Chris Davis yesterday after a failed physical. Davis had only been on the team for about a week. He was signed with the team to replace WR Domenik Hixon, who will be lost for the 2010 NFL season with a torn ACL. Davis would have been primarily used on special teams as a punt returner. This is not reassuring new for Giants fans, who have already lost two players (WR Domenik Hixon, S Chad Jones) for the entire year due to injury.

Now that WR Chris Davis (5’10” 181 pounds) has been cut, it adds to the previous article I wrote about the Giants special teams possibly having some trouble this year. I want to emphasize the word “possibly” because I’m sure that Giants GM Jerry Reese will do everything in his power to replace these guys. But the question still remains, who will the team bring in to bolster the special teams squad? Reese had mentioned (after Hixon went down) that a possible trade was not a far fetched idea. This would be surprising to many fans because Reese does not discuss team business in public, ever. However, with the recent loss of players and question marks still looming in the special teams area, what else can he do? Are there any quality players available without having to make a trade?

WR Chris Davis was a 4th round selection by the Tennessee Titans in the 2007 NFL Draft. He was also waived by the Cincinnati Bengals in March.

-Chad Jones Update: Chad Jones’ father reported yesterday that his son Chad (Giants 3rd round pick in 2010) is looking and feeling much better after his horrible car accident last week. All of us here at the NYG Reporter wish Chad Jones a speedy recovery.

New York Giants: Special Teams in Trouble?

The New York Giants have just started practicing and they have already lost two players for the entire 2010 NFL season. WR Domenik Hixon tore his ACL during minicamp and will miss the season. This hurts the special teams because Hixon was a very productive punt returner. Next, we have rookie S Chad Jones getting into a serious car accident (get well soon Chad) and almost having his leg amputated. Jones will also miss the 2010 season and could have put his career in jeopardy. All of Giants Nation is wishing Chad a full and speedy recovery. This doesn’t change the fact that losing Jones for the year, puts another hole in the special teams. Jones was in the mix as a replacement for Hixon, as rookies normally earn their pay on special teams, their first year on the roster.

The Giants signed WR Chris Davis to replace WR Domenik Hixon and now Giants GM Jerry Reese will need to find another replacement for S Chad Jones (is WR David Tyree still available for a one year contract?). Special Teams Coach Tom Quinn, will have his work cut out for him in 2010. Quinn has already disregarded rumors that new Giants S Antrel Rolle, will be in the mix as a returner. This is something the fans appreciate because it made no sense to the majority. CB Aaron Ross’ name however was not removed from the list of possibilities. WR Sinorice Moss and RB Andre Brown seem to be a part of the committee as well. Special Teams can easily become the achilles heel for the G-men in 2010, if they do not address the lost players with some talent of equal calibre.

There are a lot of new faces on special teams and losing P Jeff Feagles was a serious blow. K Lawrence Tynes has managed to stay on the roster some how. This could be a situation that changes before the season starts or certainly after the year is over. It was nice to see Feagles at minicamp offering help to the new blood. I hope the team can convince him to coach someday for the Giants. Rookie punter Matt Dodge appears to be the future at the punter position.

In my personal opinion, the G-Men will need to spend some extra time on this group and make sure everyone is on the same page. There were some dramatic changes made in this area and we’ve yet to learn if they have a winning formula. Special Teams will be another area to keep a close eye on during training camp, when it begins August 1, 2010.
