NEW YORK – The New York Football Giants have been on a roll lately. They are winning games and holding onto first place in the NFC East. They faced a very tough opponent this weekend in the revamped San Francisco 49ers. The Giants lost 27-20 and fall to 6-3 on the year. I was actually more concerned about this game, then I was about playing the New England Patriots last weekend (Giants won 24-20). The Eagles and Redskins lost in earlier games today and they drop to 3-6 records, while the Cowboys destroyed the Bills improving to 5-4. The Giants still have control of first place in the NFC East.
The first half of the game was all about the defensive teams doing work. This low scoring game had them going into the locker room for halftime with the 49ers leading 9-6. Starting 49ers RB Frank Gore had zero yards at halftime. Giants LB MIchael Boley left the game in the 2nd quarter and did not return due to a hamstring injury. Both teams were hitting hard out there and it seemed like either team could win this game as late as the fourth quarter. When they came out to finish the game, the 49ers received the ball and grabbed some momentum. This is exactly how I thought the game would go, per my pre-game final score prediction of a Giants victory 17-13.
The second half was more of the same, a hard hitting solid performance by both clubs. The Giants were able to take the lead in the 3rd quarter on a Mario Manningham TD. 49ers RB Frank Gore was knocked out of the game with a knee injury in the 3rd quarter as well. But then the 49ers started rolling and quickly scored two TD’s to take the 27-13 lead in the 4th quarter. There were a bunch of turnovers in this game (3 INT’s) and a bunch of penalties (NYG: 6-45) too. The Giants were able to rally, once again, late in the fourth quarter and quickly score a TD of their own. But it wasn’t meant to be for New York, when they could not convert on fourth down and gave control of the ball over to the 49ers with less then a minute remaining in the game. The end.
Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.
QB Eli Manning – Manning had another very good game. He finished with 311 yards 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Eli should be in Hawaii.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw was ruled out of todays game while he mends a recent injury. Get well soon AB!
WR Hakeem Nicks – Nicks was able to play today and he made his presence felt finishing with 41 yards and 1 TD.
DT Linval Joseph – Watch out, Joseph has put together a couple of good games in a row. He finished today with 1 sack.
S Antrel Rolle – Rolle continues to let his game do the talking on Sundays. He finished among the team leaders in tackles once again.
WR Mario Manningham – Super Mario had another good performance and finished with 77 yards and 1 TD. This kid is a star.
LB Michael Boley – Boley left the game in the 2nd quarter and did not return. Fans are concerned about this hamstring injury. Get well soon Mike!
DE Jason Pierre-Paul – JPP truly is a freak of nature athletically. I’ve never seen someone that big move like a cat. How many Pro Bowls?
RB Brandon Jacobs – Jacobs ran the ball well but he is not Ahmad Bradshaw. He finished with 55 yards rushing and 17 yards receiving.
CB Corey Webster – Webster was very active in todays game and finished with 1 INT. We need more interviews with Webster.
DE Osi Umenyiora – Osi continues his exceptional play since returning from injury. He finished with 1 sack.
WR Victor Cruz – Cruz lead all WR’s in the game with 84 yards and has earned Manning’s trust at this point.
LB Mathias Kiwanuka – Kiwi was all over the field as usual. I’m very glad the Giants were able to keep him.
CB Aaron Ross – Ross continues to play well in the absence of Terrell Thomas. He finished tied for 2nd in tackles but left the game with a quad injury.
TE Jake Ballard – Ballard has a quiet game and finished with 35 yards. But they came at crucial times during the game.
S Kenny Phillips – Phillips had a solid game and was making some key hits out there. He was tied for 1st in tackles.
LB Greg Jones – The rookie LB was very active in todays game and did a good job out there. He finished tied for 2nd in tackles.
RB DJ Ware – Ware had to go to work and finished with 34 yards rushing and 34 yards receiving.
LB Spencer Paysinger – The Giants are fielding 3 rookie LB’s out there and they are playing well. Paysinger took over for Boley and did a good job.
CB Prince Amukamara – The rookie sensation still has not had his debut game yet. Some fans hoped it would be today but it was not the case.
RB Da’Rel Scott – Scott was used as the kickoff returner and did a good job in my opinion. Give this rookie time to play and he will only get better.
P Steve Weatherford – The Weatherman had another good game besides a flub he punted for 29 yards.
K Lawrence Tynes – Tynes had a solid game and finished with 2 FG’s and 2 extra points made.
Giants Defense – Both defenses played extremely hard today and the score reflects that. The G-Men finished with 2 sacks, 1 INT and 0 forced fumbles.
Giants Offense – The offense played a better game then the stats would have you believe. Manning is playing on another level this year.
Giants Special Teams – The Giants special teams continues to amaze me. I love the move to make rookie RB Da’Rel Scott a kickoff returner but to give away a meaningless onside kick in the first half? Embarrassing.

NEW YORK – The Giants went into this game today without a few of their star players (Nicks, Bradshaw and Baas). This would have been a tough game even at full strength with the way New England has been playing. The Giants really needed this win to create more of a separation from the pack in the NFC East. Not only did the Giants beat the Patriots 24-20, they did it in dramatic fashion with only 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. This game was without a doubt the greatest game to watch all season for Giants fans so far. My heart was in my throat for most of the game and the final drive nearly gave me a stroke. The Giants improve to 6-2 on the season and continue to hold onto first place in the NFC East.
The first half of this game was a defensive battle. Nobody expected these teams to go into the locker room at halftime with the score tied 0-0. Even I was wrong about the shoot out that I predicted would happen. There wasn’t any scoring but it was a fun defensive battle to watch with lots of turnovers in this game. The second half was a completely different story, with all 44 combined points scored in the second half. The special teams performance for both teams was atrocious today. There was also too many penalties once again but a win is a win. The G-men took care of business and will face another tough opponent next week when they play the 49ers in San Francisco at 4:15 PM EST.
There is a reason why the TV networks called this the “Game of the Week”. Both of these teams fought hard the entire contest and it truly could have gone either way in those final seconds of the game. I’m glad the Giants were able to beat the Patriots today because it is deeper then the surface stuff. This was New York versus Boston to a lot of people, so put another notch on the win belt for the Greatest City on Earth! 18-1.
Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.
QB Eli Manning – Eli Manning is an elite quarterback in the NFL, period. He finished the game with 250 yards 2 TD’s and 1 INT.
RB Brandon Jacobs – Brandon the Bull stepped up today and ran the ball hard. He finished with 72 yards rushing, 28 yards receiving and 1 TD.
DE Jason Pierre-Paul – JPP was able to play today and came away with another sack. This guy is a machine.
WR Mario Manningham – Super Mario stepped up today and finished with 33 yards and 1 TD.
LB Michael Boley – Boley is simply a beast and has become one of my favorite players on the team. He led all tacklers and had 1 sack and 1 forced fumble.
DE Osi Umenyiora – Osi had a solid game and was in on a bunch of key plays. He was also in a fight with Patriots player Matt Light.
WR Victor Cruz – This Jersey Kid is stepping up each and every week. He lead all WR’s and finished with 91 yards.
LB Jacquian Williams – The rookie LB had his work cut out for him today and handled himself very well.
TE Jake Ballard – Ballard is quickly making a name for himself throughout the entire NFL. He continues to move up the TE rankings and finished with 67 yards and 1 TD.
S Antrel Rolle – Rolle left the game for a while but returned. He had a solid game and continues to ball on opponents.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw did not play in this game and is nursing a broken bone in his foot. Get well soon AB!
WR Hakeem Nicks – Nicks did not play in this game because he is dealing with a hamstring injury. Get well soon Hakeem!
C David Baas – Baas missed another game due to injury and really put Manning in a tough spot. Get well soon David!
S Kenny Phillips – Phillips was the second leading tackler on the team and had another great game.
DE Justin Tuck – Tuck made his presence felt on the field and knocked Brady down a few times.
WR Ramses Barden – Barden was taken off the PUP list and got involved today finishing with 22 yards.
CB Deon Grant – Grant was simply making plays all over the field today. He finished with 1 INT.
LB Mathias Kiwanuka – Kiwi was playing like a man possessed today and finished with 1 INT.
CB Prince Amukamara – The rookie CB will have to wait at least another week for his debut.
P Steve Weatherford – The Weatherman had an outstanding game today. He is a bright spot on special teams.
K Lawrence Tynes – Tynes made his 1 FG attempt and all 3 of his extra point attempts. He has played well this year.
Giants Defense – The Giants D came up huge in this game. They finished with 2 sacks, 2 INT’s and 1 forced fumble.
Giants Offense – For a squad that lost 3 key starters (Nicks, Bradshaw and Baas) before game time, they did an outstanding job today.
Giants Special Teams – This group still needs a lot of work and the returners had a horrible day dropping a couple of kicks/punts.

NEW YORK – The Giants played the lowly Miami Dolphins today in another must-win game for Big Blue. This was not a fun game to watch at all for the fans. The Dolphins didn’t need to use all of the trick plays I thought they would employ, they simply drove the ball at will against the Giants defense. But the Giants did their thing in the 4th quarter as usual and pulled out the 20-17 win. They improve to 5-2 on the year and keep the Dolphins winless. Fans were expressing themselves on twitter LIVE during the game and I won’t repeat some of the things I heard on there. I can assure you it wasn’t good. I would have loved to stayed on and talked more with the fans but twitter said that I reached some ridiculous tweet limit during a LIVE football game and put me in “twitter jail” once again. It is really quite annoying and making me wonder if the aggravation is worth it.
Miami went into the locker room with a 14-10 halftime lead and seemed to have all of the momentum for most of the first half. They were not playing like a winless and pathetic ball club at all. They were moving the ball at will and beating the Giants defense to the punch on most plays. At the end of the day, I understand the only thing that matters is winning but tell that to the Giants Nation who have had to endure these close games each and every week. There is a lack of consistency that cannot be denied and quite frankly, it is becoming unnerving. The G-Men had way too many penalties again, finishing the game with seven and too many dropped passes by the WR’s and TE’s. The running game needs to pick it up and the defense has been giving up a lot of big plays. They will need to make some corrections before the elite teams come to town.
The Giants will play the Patriots in New England next Sunday at 4:15 PM EST. That gives the Giants one week to make the proper adjustments needed before the storm hits.
Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.
QB Eli Manning – Manning played an outstanding game today and got little help from his teammates that dropped passes. He finished with 349 yards 2 TD’s 0 INT’s.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw had a decent game and left for x-rays in the second half but still returned. He finished with 50 yards rushing and 38 yards receiving.
WR Hakeem Nicks – Nicks had a good game and finished with 68 yards 0 TD’s. He gets all of the attention from opposing DB’s.
DE Jason Pierre-Paul – It seems like JPP gets a sack in every single game and today was no different. He got 1 sack late in the contest.
LB Michael Boley – Boley led the entire defense in tackles and continues to be a force on the field.
RB Brandon Jacobs – Jacobs did not have a very good “return from injury” game today. He finished with 10 yards and a fumble.
DE Osi Umenyiora – Osi has been making his presence felt on the field and finished with 1 sack today.
LB Mathias Kiwanuka – Kiwi was all over the place today and finished with 1.5 sacks.
WR Mario Manningham – Super Mario had a very nice game today and finished with 63 yards and 1 TD.
S Antrel Rolle – Rolle had his usual good game today but he also has some fans saying he gives up too many big plays.
CB Aaron Ross – Ross had a nice game today and is filling in nicely for Terrell Thomas while he is on the mend.
TE Jake Ballard – Big Jake is really becoming a fan favorite now and continues to produce on the field. He finished with 55 yards today.
WR Victor Cruz – You have to love this kid. Cruz went out and had another great game by leading all WR’s, finishing with 99 yards and 1 TD.
DE Justin Tuck – Tuck made his return to the field today after missing a month to injury, he finished with a 1/2 sack.
CB Prince Amukamara – The rookie Prince was back at practice this week and should have his debut sometime in November.
LB Greg Jones – The rookie LB Jones had a solid game and finished second on the team in tackles.
OL Chris Snee – Snee was able to return to the field today after dealing with a concussion. It was good to see him back out there.
CB Corey Webster – C-Web had a terrific game and got the 4th quarter INT that sealed the win for Big Blue.
P Steve Weatherford – The Weatherman put together another nice game and has fans exhaling about the punting group.
K Lawrence Tynes – Tynes made both of his FG attempts and both of his extra point attempts. He is having a good year.
Giants Defense – The Giants defense did not play very well today. They allowed way too many yards and points to an inferior team. It was hard to watch this game.
Giants Offense – The Giants offense was making plays but the running game was awful today. Manning was balling but the supporting cast kept dropping passes.
Giants Special Teams – The Giants special teams is mediocre and will need some serious tweaking during the offseason.

NEW YORK – I’ve mentioned how I truly felt this was a must win game for the Giants. I wrote an entire article about this a few days ago. The Giants must have read it because they were able to get the win today by beating the Bills 27-24 in a battle. After losing to the lowly Seahawks last weekend, the G-Men needed not only a moral victory this weekend but also another “W” in the standings to keep their playoff hopes within reach. The Giants were also without some key players today including RB Brandon Jacobs, OL Chris Snee and DE Justin Tuck, all sitting out due to injury.
This was really an entertaining game to watch. I thought I was going to have a heart attack at certain points in the game because it was filled with so much drama. The first half of the game was going back and forth. The Giants gave up two huge plays that made up the majority of the Bills offensive production. Still, both teams went into the locker room tied 17-17. The second half was equally entertaining and saw the game go back and forth once more with both teams being tied 24-24 with under two minutes left in the game. The Giants had the ball at the end of the game and drove down the field to the Buffalo 1 yard line. The Giants were unable to score a TD but K Lawrence Tynes knocked a FG through to give the G-men a 27-24 lead. That was all they would need to secure the victory and improve to 4-2 on the season.
The Giants definitely needed this win as they head into the bye week next weekend. The players need the rest and the team needed this win to keep up in the NFC. They are still committing too many penalties and will need to work on that during the break. Giants fans will have to endure the hated “bye week” and try to pretend they are interested in the other NFL games. They will be rooting for whoever plays the Cowboys, Eagles and Redskins, you can count on that.

QB Eli Manning – Manning seems to be improving week to week. He had another solid game and finished with 292 yards 0 TD’s and 0 INT’s. His one TD pass was called back.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw is a beast and might have had the best game of his career today. He finished with 104 yards rushing, 26 yards receiving and 3 TD’s.
WR Hakeem Nicks – Nicks led all receivers with 96 yards on 4 receptions. He was quiet most of the game but still contributed.
CB Corey Webster – Webster gets my defensive game ball for coming up huge in this game with 2 INT’s. Nice to see C-Webb playing well out there.
DE Osi Umenyiora – Who still thinks Osi isn’t worth elite money? You’re crazy! Osi had another good game and finished with 1 sack.
LB Mathias Kiwanuka – Kiwi was balling today and had a solid game. He finished with 1 sack and 1 forced fumble.
S Antrel Rolle – Rolle was all over the field as usual and making plays. Fans love this guy and I can see why.
WR Mario Manningham – Super Mario had a nice game and finished with 56 yards. He had a nice TD late in the game but couldn’t hold onto the ball.
DE Jason Pierre-Paul – How do you Spell JPP? B-E-A-S-T! JPP had another great game and finished with 1 sack.
LB Jacquian Williams – The rookie LB had a quieter game then he normally does. He is still going to be a force in the NFL.
RB Brandon Jacobs – Jacobs had to sit out his second straight game due to a knee injury. Get well soon Brandon!
WR Victor Cruz – Cruz continues to make big strides and had another game where he saw extended playing time.
DE Justin Tuck – Tuck had to sit out another game due to his neck injury. He will get the bye week next week to rest more.
LB Michael Boley – Boley is awesome and led all defensive tacklers for the G-Men. I love this guy!
S Kenny Phillips – Phillips got a bit banged up in this game but played through it. He had a solid game today.
TE Jake Ballard – Ballard is quickly becoming one of Manning’s favorite targets. He had another great game and finished with 81 yards.
CB Aaron Ross – Ross had a good game and made some nice tackles out there today.
LB Greg Jones – The rookie LB Jones had another quiet game today as Big Blue was trying out a 4-2-5 defense.
C David Baas – Baas was able to return to the field this week after missing last weeks game against the Seahawks.
P Steve Weatherford – The Weatherman continues to pay dividends after the Giants brought him on board. Great punter.
K Lawrence Tynes – Tynes made two of his three FG attempts and made all three of his extra point attempts.
Giants Defense – Despite giving up some huge plays and a ton of yardage, the Giants finished with 3 sacks, 2 INT’s and 1 forced fumble.
Giants Offense – The Giants offense had a great game today. I really liked how they spread the ball around and made plays when they had to.
Giants Special Teams – The special teams played a pretty good game despite allowing a blocked FG attempt by Tynes.

NEW YORK – The 2011 NFL season has officially started Giants fans. I’m sure that most of you watched the Giants play the Redskins in DC today. Some football fans scrambled this morning to make sure their fantasy football teams had the proper lineups set and that there were no last minute injury updates. Some football fans broke out their lucky jerseys or made their favorite food before the games. All football fans honored the fallen of 9/11 in some way today, even if it were a small prayer or by attending a ceremony. America remembered the military and the fallen today. Never forget!
The Giants lost 28-14 to the Redskins in a game that was hard to watch at times. There were so many sloppy plays, after a very promising start, that I do not know where to begin. The best thing for Giants fans to do is just put this game behind us and look forward to next week when they play the Rams. Yes, it was that bad against a Redskins team that 99% of the experts said would lose today. The Giants start the season 0-1 and they have not even started the hard part of their schedule yet. After wins by the Eagles and Redskins, the G-men are officially in last place until we see what happens with the Cowboys game. The first half of the game saw a lot of back and forth action and it seemed pretty competitive, albeit sloppy. Big Blue went into the locker room at halftime tied up 14-14 and seemed to be building momentum.
Then the second half started and it all went down hill from there. One thing after another went wrong. The Giants were completely shut out in the second half and seemed to be playing tired football. I saw a lot of guys who appeared to be playing in slow motion. The Giants special teams are absolutely atrocious and need serious changes immediately. I have said that they might be the worst special teams in the entire NFL and I stand by that comment until they play better. The biggest surprise of the day was Redskins QB Rex Grossman balling on Big Blue for 305 yards and 2 TD’s. Nobody could have seen that coming. Giants QB Eli Manning had a rough day and was sacked 4 times with 1 INT. Manning has not seemed himself at all this year in the preseason or the regular season game tonight. I’m not sure what is bothering him but I hope he can focus on football and get back to the QB we all know he can be. The Giants also had way too many penalties in this game, finishing with 8 total.
Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.
QB Eli Manning – Eli did not have a very good game and finished 18/32 with 268 yards 0 TD’s and 1 INT. However, he did score on a 2 yard rushing TD.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw had a decent game and ran hard as usual. He finished with 44 yards and 1 TD.
WR Hakeem Nicks – Nicks had a great game and he gets my offensive game ball. He finished with 122 yards 0 TD’s.
DE Justin Tuck – Tuck was on the sidelines and missed the game while he is recovering from an injury. Get well soon Justin!
CB Aaron Ross – Ross had a pretty good game but doesn’t look 100% comfortable back there yet.
S Kenny Phillips – KP had a really nice game and was all over the field. He is going to have a solid year.
RB Brandon Jacobs – Jacobs ran hard but finished with only 29 yards. I expect a big year from the Bull this year.
LB Mathias Kiwanuka – Kiwi had a good game and finished 5th on the defense in tackles.
S Antrel Rolle – Rolle led the defense in tackles and had some very hard hits in the game.
DE Jason Pierre-Paul – JPP gets my defensive game ball for his outstanding game. He finished with 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble.
LB Michael Boley – Boley had a good game and finished with a fumble recovery.
WR Mario Manningham – Super Mario had some big catches and finished the game with 49 yards 0 TD’s.
TE Jake Ballard – Ballard had a nice game despite getting banged up before halftime. He finished with 59 yards.
CB Corey Webster – Webster had a relatively quiet night but did his job.
LB Greg Jones – Jones had a pretty good night for a rookie being thrown into the fire. I like this kid.
WR Domenik Hixon – Hixon was a busy man tonight returning punts and seeing some time at WR.
K Lawrence Tynes – Tynes was 0-1 on FG’s due to a blocked FG attempt and made both of his two extra point attempts.
P Steve Weatherford – The “Weatherman” had a nice game I thought and fans must feel better with a veteran back there.
Giants Defense – The Giants D gave up 28 points to an inferior Redskins team but still finished with 4 sacks, 0 INT’s and 1 forced fumble.
Giants Offense – The Giants offense has some work to do and it starts with the play calling.
Giants Special Teams – Simply the worst special teams I can ever remember for the New York Giants.
Coach Coughlin – Coach Coughlin and his staff are making do with a depleted team and a young roster. There will be growing pains for certain.

NEW YORK – The battle for New York is always a fun game to watch. This matchup has really heated up in recent years with the resurgence of the Jets over the past three or four seasons. They have become a good team but cannot seem to keep their mouths shut. It is this reason which has added some spice to a rivalry between two teams in the same city but not in the same conference or division. The Jets made the bigger plays tonight when it counted and won the game 17-3. Even though they won this game, the Giants will always be the big brother to the Jets. Everyone in the Tri-state area knows this, including the Jets fan living in denial. So after a crazy weekend where Hurricane Irene pushed back the start of the game, these two sons of New York went on the field and battled.
The first quarter was really slow. Both defenses were playing very well which caused the low scoring first half to end with a 7-3 Jets lead. QB Eli Manning had two interceptions before halftime which was surprising. He hasn’t seemed himself throughout the preseason so far. The Jets really couldn’t do anything against a tough Giants defense the entire first half. The Jets got a lucky return for a bunch of yards and a TD on a short field. Other then that, they really didn’t do much and the first half stats prove it. The Giants special teams had their worst game of the preseason so far and that is really saying something. I hate to say this but I think the Giants might have the worst special teams in the NFL. Another blocked FG and a couple of dropped balls by the rookie Jernigan are only a few of the things that went wrong. This group is the Giants achilles heel without question. The second half of the game was all Jets and the Giants could not score a TD to save their lives. They had a few opportunities to get the ball into the endzone but fell short each time. Brandon Jacobs getting thrown out of the game for fighting did not help. Especially just before a crucial drive from the Jets 1 yard line. The second half was no fun to watch at all and some fans were extremely vocal about their disappointment in the Giants performance. The Giants defense had no sacks or interceptions against the Jets tonight as well.
The Giants are a team that has no cheerleaders for a reason, they want to focus solely on football. So, it was strange to see Snoopy out on the field standing next to a Snoopy trophy which was the prize for the winner tonight. My how times have changed. Snoopy of course is the mascot for MetLife, who recently purchased the naming rights to Giants stadium for the next twenty years. I’m sure it is all in good fun but they may need to get a better trophy next year. These are grown men sacrificing their bodies on the football field and not cartoons out there. The Giants will play the New England Patriots next for their final preseason game on Thursday at 7:30 PM EST and will need to cut down to the final 53 man roster by Saturday. Hold on tight Giants fans, the regular season is right around the corner.
Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.
QB Eli Manning – Easy Eli just doesn’t look like himself this year. I’m not sure why. He finished the game with 200 yards 0 TD’s 2 INT’s and was also sacked twice.
WR Hakeem Nicks – Nicks played much more in this game tonight then he has so far in the preseason. He had a good game and finished with 5 receptions for 71 yards.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw is simply the spark plug for the entire Giants offense. He had another good game and finished with 34 yards.
DE Justin Tuck – Tuck was his usual force to be reckoned with before leaving the game with a burner. He is said to be fine.
RB Brandon Jacobs – Brandon provided a spark for the offense but also got himself kicked out of the game for fighting. He finished with 51 yards.
S Kenny Phillips – Phillips had a very nice game and it was good to see him around the ball so much tonight.
WR Mario Manningham – Super Mario had a nice game and finished with 36 yards. I expect a breakout season from him in 2011.
DE Jason Pierre-Paul – I think I am more excited about seeing JPP play in the real games then any other player. This guy is exciting to watch and had a good game.
QB David Carr – Carr played a lot less tonight since the starters stayed in the game longer. He finished with 36 yards 0 TD’s 0 INT’s for the night.
LB Mathias Kiwanuka – Kiwi was having a very nice game before leaving with a minor groin injury.
S Tyler Sash – The rookie led the entire defense in tackles and is earning his spot on the roster this preseason.
CB Aaron Ross – Ross did a pretty good job tonight and will need to stay healthy in order to really help the team out in 2011.
WR Jerrel Jernigan – This kid had a long night and I really felt bad for him. Nothing seemed to go right for him as a returner. Keep your head up!
K Rhys Lloyd – Lloyd made one 34 yard FG and had another 42 yard FG attempt blocked. He is a kickoff specialist and should be used as such.
P Matt Dodge – Dodge is still having an up and down season but he seems better then last year for sure.
DE Osi Umenyiora – Osi is still on the mend from recent surgery and did not play in this game.
K Lawrence Tynes – Tynes did not play in this game as he is still on the mend from an injury suffered in the first preseason game against the Panthers.

NEW YORK – It is every NFL coaches worst nightmare scenario. Playing in a preseason game and losing a star player for the year to injury. The New York Giants have lost starting CB Terrell Thomas for the year on a bizarre play in which Jason Pierre-Paul’s leg whipped around and hit Thomas in the leg. Yes, it is the dreaded torn ACL injury that all fans know too well. I really feel bad for the guy because we all know how hard he worked during the offseason to better himself. Justin Tuck was on television being interviewed during the game and was asked what he thought about the loss of Thomas, Tuck simply said “it’s devastating”. That might be an understatement. With the Giants looking very thin at the CB position even before this horrible news, they now need to get to work on bringing in adequate backup players. The Giants lost CB Bruce Johnson for the year due to injury and also rookie CB Prince Amukamara for a couple of months with a fractured foot.
This will most likely leave CB Corey Webster and CB Aaron Ross as the two starters. Both of those guys are very capable of filling in but the real question becomes one about depth. The Giants are very thin at one of the most crucial positions in the game of football. Head Coach Tom Coughlin looked like he had seen a ghost when Thomas went down just before the half. Somehow T2 managed to walk off the field on his own but once the team came out of the locker room from halftime, the news broke about Thomas’ injury and his season being over. I can honestly say that I gasped at the news when I first heard it and still haven’t really digested the information yet. Thomas led the team in tackles last year and is clearly a defensive leader for the team. You simply cannot replace the production and a talent like that but the team will need to bring in someone who can fill in temporarily.
CB Michael Coe, CB Brian Jackson and CB Brian Witherspoon could be worked into games as fill ins too. But I still think the team will have to bring in a veteran CB for the depth chart to be even remotely near the talent they lost thus far. Rookie CB Prince Amukamara will return later in the season but I doubt they will throw him in the fire after returning from an injury. Things are about to get very interesting in the backfield and I fully expect to see a new face in Giants blue sometime this week.

NEW YORK – Our readers know how much I have talked about giving Plaxico Burress another chance in the NFL. I have written a few articles on him before and after his release from prison last week. I was on his side and hoping that he learned from the error of his ways and came out of jail with a fresh outlook on life. I was wrong. I was dumbfounded when I read what Burress had to say about Giants head coach Tom Coughlin and the New York Giants. I just cannot believe he would burn a bridge before he was anywhere near making amends. Really Plaxico?
Giants fans have not forgotten the facts of the Burress era. The facts are that Burress is a prima donna who has a problem with authority. He mentioned how he hated the prison system because of the way guards spoke to the prisoners in there. How he hated being told what to do and when to eat and all of that. What the heck did he expect? As I watched the video clip with a hot soup face (face scrunched up in disbelief), I shook my head and instantly felt a wave of peace come over me. It was time to say goodbye and good riddens to Plaxico Burress.
It is no secret that Burress has a big mouth but this was such a public relations fumble that Tiki Barber would be shaking his head at it. The unrepentant Burress came across as bitter and having a bad attitude. But you go on and keep imagining that you’re “keeping it real” Plaxico. You want to keep it real? You just dissed New York, the Giants and Coach Coughlin in one sitting and then chose to gloat about the possibility of going to the New York Jets? Now I feel like a fool for sticking up for Burress and I’m glad that Coach Coughlin recognized the headache Plaxico would become down the road.
Let’s not forget how many times he was fined for being late to practice, all his off the field legal problems and how he threw a monkey wrench into the promising 2008 season for the Giants as a team. He is acting like a 34 year old child by saying he doesn’t like the Tom Coughlin system or the way that he coaches. Hey Plaxico, why don’t you try joining the rest of us in the real world where 90% of the public hate their jobs and bosses. Real men stick it out because they have no other choice but to provide for their families. You threw away $12 million dollars and two years of your life because of your ego. Now you decide to call out the team who showed you love and gave you that fat contract to begin with? Why not point that finger at yourself and realize that grown ups don’t act this way. Could you imagine Ray Lewis complaining about practice or the coaching? I can only hope that Burress decides to go to the Philadelphia Eagles, so the Giants DB’s can knock him out while he goes up for a pass. Now that is keeping it real.

NEW YORK – The Giants defensive backs were solid in 2010. The acquisition of defensive coordinator Perry Fewell had a profound effect on the defense as a whole but the DB’s will ultimately benefit the most. Why do I say this? Because Perry Fewell is widely known as a DB guru and there is no mistaking the fact that he brought the Giants defense to elite status in 2010. The Big Blue D hovered in the top five of total defenses all season and made huge strides from the abominable 2009 season.
The cornerback group is extremely young, with Corey Webster holding the title of “most experienced” with 6 seasons. If you averaged it out, the average amount of game experience on the team is 4 years. When you look at it like this, it makes me think the team will try to bring in a young veteran to compliment Terrell Thomas. The one player that Giants fans are salivating over is the Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha. If the Giants can figure out how to get this star on the team, they will have the best defensive backfield in the NFL, period. The odds on this happening are highly unlikely but Fewell must be in GM Jerry Reese’s ear daily about bringing this guy on board. When you add those CB’s to the awesome Safeties on the team, it’s dynamite.
The NFL Combine has been in full swing this week and it’s a great opportunity to take a look at some of the young talent. I guarantee that Reese and Fewell are considering which cornerback the team will draft this year and have in training camp. The more you look at the CB position, the more you are concerned with depth. Not the starters but depth. I am confident that Thomas, Ross and Webster can handle the job but if if one or two of them go down, the game will change dramatically. I don’t expect all of the players listed below to be on the team in 2011 but I am rooting for all of them to do well. Once a Giant, always a Giant.
Let’s take a look at the current Giants cornerbacks as of 2-25-11.
1. Terrell Thomas, 6’0″ 199 pounds – It is absolutely incredible that Thomas has not made the pro bowl yet. I say that because of his production on the field for the team. He is a huge part of New York’s success and completely underrated in my opinion. In 2010, he led the team in both tackles (101) and INT’s (5) and I expect nothing less then another solid season from him. He is young and hungry and seems to make the big plays when the teams needs them most. He also played in all 16 games in 2010.
2. Aaron Ross, 6’0″ 197 pounds – Ross has become an anomaly to fans. He was an exciting player to watch and played with fire when he first got to town but nagging injuries and missing so much game time has got him down a bit. He only missed 2 games last season due to injury but he still didn’t look himself. He did return some punts (at his request) for the team and did a good job with that but the team needs him at CB. He was questioning his career after 2009 while enduring the grueling rehab process. Something that must be just as tough on a guy mentally as it is physically. Ross is a fan favorite and I am rooting for him to get back to form in 2011. Keep your head up Aaron, we need you man!
3. Corey Webster, 6’0″ 202 pounds – Webster is the eldest statesmen as I mentioned above and the guy with the most game time experience for the CB squad. He finished 2010 second on the team with 4 INT’s and missed only one game due to injury. Coaches and fans have become accustom to seeing Webster around and I expect him to have a good season this year. He is also a fan favorite and someone the team counts on come crunch time. Perhaps he could bring in his Super Bowl ring to motivate the youngsters with that ten table shine.
4. Michael Coe, 6’0″ 184 pounds – Coe played in 4 games for Big Blue last season and was a guy they brought in for depth. His lack of playing time leaves us wondering what will happen with him in 2011. This is another guy who will have to show DC Perry Fewell consistency early and often if he wants to be on the roster. We wish him luck.
5. Brian Jackson, 6’0″ 198 pounds – Jackson is a guy fighting for a roster spot and I have to tell you that I like this kid. He is a good guy with a great head on his shoulders. The NFL is a tough business based strictly on performance but it’s tough not to root for this guy chasing his dream. He is willing to do whatever the team asks of him and I hope he makes the final cut.
6. Brian Witherspoon, 5’10” 180 pounds – Witherspoon was a pick up last year for depth on the team, plain and simple. He went to Stillman college and made the roster by the end of the year. Perhaps, Fewell can see something he likes in this guy that the fans have not seen yet. Once again, he is a Giant and I want to see him do well.
7. Bruce Johnson, 5’11” 182 pounds – Johnson was around for 3 games in 2010 and ended the season on the injured reserve list. This is a guy who might have a roster spot. He seems like he has a little bit of a playmaker in his system but it needs time to flourish. I would not be surprised if the team gave him another shot in 2011. The Giants need help at the CB position and keeping Johnson for depth seems like a smart move since he knows the playbook.
8. Joe Burnett, 5’11” 185 pounds – Burnett is on the reserve future list and will have a tough fight to make the roster. I’m not sure what to expect from this guy and fans will have to wait and see what the team decides to do. He went to Central Florida college.
9. Cary Harris, 5’11” 187 pounds – Harris is another player who is on the reserve future list. I don’t know much about him other then he went to USC. He is a guy that we don’t know much about and will have to see what happens with him.
10. Woodny Turrene, 5’11” 185 pounds – Turrene rounds out the third and final player on the reserve future list. He went to Louisville but once again, I don’t know much about him and will have to wait and see what the team decides to do with him. I hope all of these guys do well and can contribute to Big Blue this season.

It feels like we just started doing this segment yesterday but here we are almost at the end. Tomorrow will be the final day of the “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” comparisons, as we reach the first and last round. We are now only 3 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. This is an extremely unique situation that will not happen again until Jerry Reese decides to retire and a new GM takes over the reins. The 3 year see-saw of draft pick comparisons might not happen again for at least a decade, so I hope all of our readers enjoyed this. I can honestly say that Jerry Reese has done an outstanding job replacing a legend in the pro football world. New York Giants fans have nothing to complain about when it comes to the front office.

This has been the most difficult round to compare in this segment so far. Both Reese and Accorsi have done an outstanding job here by drafting players who have already made it to the Pro Bowl. I am going to call round two a push in my opinion. Let me explain why I see round two as being equal. If we “x” out the solid players such as OL Snee, CB Webster, WR Smith and CB Thomas, that leaves us with WR Moss, LB Sintim and OT Beatty. Moss is clearly the bust out of all of these guys but Sintim and Beatty are too young to have proven anything yet. So Moss being invisible “x’s” out Sintim and Beatty’s inexperience. I have to give Jerry Reese some extra credit for once again grabbing two players in a round and holding on to all of the Giants picks.

NEW YORK – The New York Football Giants have been on a roll lately. They are winning games and holding onto first place in the NFC East. They faced a very tough opponent this weekend in the revamped San Francisco 49ers. The Giants lost 27-20 and fall to 6-3 on the year. I was actually more concerned about this game, then I was about playing the New England Patriots last weekend (Giants won 24-20). The Eagles and Redskins lost in earlier games today and they drop to 3-6 records, while the Cowboys destroyed the Bills improving to 5-4. The Giants still have control of first place in the NFC East.
