Should the New York Giants Still Trade Up for Eric Berry?

OK, here is the scenario. If you were Jerry Reese and learned that Kenny Phillips might miss the first 4-6 weeks of the NFL season, would you trade up and grab the future all-pro safety Eric Berry? Has the Antrel Rolle signing and obvious potential of Kenny Phillips when healthy made us focus elsewhere? If Antrel Rolle is clearly one starter, then who would the other one be? Michael Johnson? Deon Grant? Do you think it is a dead issue to consider the lethality of a healthy Phillips, Rolle and Berry. When all three are playing at an optimum level, it could change how backfields are used in NFL schemes. The Bermuda Triangle backfield.

Drafting Berry would let the Giants know one thing for certain, they would not need to do anything with the safety position for five or six years minimum. That’s not bad when you think about it. Eric Berry is clearly the best safety in the draft and he also had a very crisp and clean combine workout. It is not likely that the team would pursue this but I was very impressed with this young man. I think he has a very bright future in the NFL. I have Eric Berry going to Tampa Bay with the third overall pick. The last time I felt there was a player the G-men might move up for was Michael Crabtree. Clearly, that did not work out for the Giants or 49ers. I hope he has a very good year and proves the doubters wrong in 2010.

What do you think about the Giants grabbing yet another safety before the 2010 season? Will it or could it ever happen? If not Berry, then possibly safety Earl Thomas or Taylor Mays at pick fifteen? Maybe Chad Jones in round two? Is the safety discussion one that should be over with by now? What are your thoughts?

NYG Reporter Gives Support to the American Red Cross

As of April 12, 2010, the NYG Reporter fully supports and promotes the American Red Cross on our website. You can find a link to the site on the right side bottom. I have personally done volunteer work for the Red Cross during the 2005 hurricane season (Wilma) in South Florida and another time in the late 1990’s. I know what it feels like to have no power, electricity or water for two weeks. Disaster relief and preparedness are things that no one generally thinks about until it’s too late. I would urge all Americans to have a proper kit ready for all disaster type situations. One of our community leaders Saulo Padua, who is practicing law in Brazil, just recently experienced first hand what the devastating storms can do. Brazil was hit very hard last week. Hopefully, Saulo can leave a comment here and tell us a little about what he has seen there. The Red Cross was founded in 1881 and has been helping with disaster relief for 129 years.

It doesn’t take much to contribute to the American Red Cross. The socialvibe company has made it even more simple to donate some time to them. If you click the American Red Cross banner on the bottom right hand side of the screen, it shows you that all you need to do, is spend some time (literally) looking around as a donation. It’s very simple and shows a “counter” with exactly how many minutes are being donated by those browsing. Everyone who checks out the American Red Cross from the NYG Reporter site will counted but not named, with respect to our community privacy policy. We will select a new charity to support every three months. It doesn’t mean we longer support the previously posted charity, it just means we are giving some other charities a chance to be promoted. We will settle on four charities to support and promote them seasonally. The American Red Cross is the first to be chosen but not the last.

I urge all parents and people alike, to take the time to make a disaster preparedness plan. Every home should have a small bag with the following items in it. Keep this bag in a place where you know it will always be ready to go if something should happen. Going over a “what to do if…” scenario with children and spouses. It takes one night of sitting and talking. Having the bag ready to go, takes a lot of thinking out of the process when trying getting back to normal. The thing with a disaster is you never really know what you are going to need, until you need it.

NYG Reporter Doing LIVE Updates for 2010 NFL Draft

The NYG Reporter will be doing LIVE updates of draft picks, during all three days of the draft. I will leave a time/date list below. If you can’t watch it on television, feel free to stop by and check out the updates. You can also subscribe to our rss feed to get automatic updates. Be sure to stop by and leave your comments about your thoughts on who the team chooses. The NFL has decided to expand the 2010 NFL Draft over a three day period instead of the traditional two day weekend. I don’t like this change at all. Personally, I understand that they are experimenting with new ideas but the two day NFL Draft was torture enough for true fans. Expanding it to a three day event is just too much. I like the Pro Bowl being played before the Super Bowl but think it should always be held in Hawaii. So some of the new ideas work and some don’t. The three day draft will be short lived.

2010 New York Giants: NYG Notes 4-10-10

The following notes are random bits of current information on the New York Giants. The voluntary workouts will soon be mandatory training camp, quickly following the NFL Draft. I haven’t heard any new reports on injured players or how their rehab is going. It’s good news, that there isn’t anything negative to report, if you know what I mean? Sometimes there will be a question asked in the Notes articles, if you know the answer in the comment section. Feel free to leave a comment about anything new that gets left out as well. BREAKING NEWS posts are always Welcome here at the NYG Reporter. Sign up to become a member if you haven’t already. You don’t need to be a member to leave a comment though, so let us hear what you think.

Here is a small list of current happenings in the New York Giants world and the NFL.

1. The New Meadowlands stadium (old Giants Stadium) finally opened to the public today on April 10, 2010. The new era officially begins.

2. There are now only 12 days until the 2010 NFL Draft (April 22, 2010). The Giants still have their first round, N0. 15 pick.

3. The Giants brought in an offensive lineman from Pittsburgh to test out. It seems the Giants might be looking at taking an offensive lineman in the first round if no coveted linebackers are available.

4. The entire NFL schedule should be released soon by the NFL. The Giants open the preseason playing the Jets, on 8-16-10 8PM, Monday Night Football. Check the “Schedule” tab for future info.

5. Question for members, when do the Giants game tickets officially go on sale? Date/Time? Kyle should know since he has season tickets.

6. Former Giants RB Tiki Barber, continues to get hammered by the New York media for leaving his pregnant wife (twins) of eleven years.

7. Who would you start at middle linebacker? Chase Blackburn, Jonathan Goff, Kenny Ingram or Clint Sintim? I would start LB Blackburn.

8. New York Giants training camp dates/news should be coming from the team soon. Check the “Events” tab for future info. The Giants will hold their training camp in Albany, New York.

9. NFL.com has calculated that the New York Giants will travel a distance of 7,892 miles for regular season games in 2010.

2010 New York Giants: Pre Draft Diagnosis

After taking a look at the current New York Giants roster, I believe the team can do well in 2010. They are a young football team that should have some good competition come training camp time. I was surprised at some of the number of players per position. Some of the areas where I thought the G-men were thin, they weren’t. Using the current roster, if it doesn’t change again before the draft, you can begin to see what the team might be thinking since they are so close (12 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft) to getting down to business. The Giants War Room will be rocking and I would not be surprised to see some deals getting done. The G-Men have been very aggressive this off season.

Giants fans are left with more questions then answers. The team has addressed the safety position thoroughly and made some other basic roster moves. Jerry Reese is a man who always has a plan and I am sure he can see the future better then any of us. I’m on the fence currently about drafting either a linebacker or offensive lineman in round one. Linebacker is the bigger need but if the ones they targeted are off the boards, then I would go offensive lineman here. Getting Eli Manning some help during his prime, can only benefit the team long term.

I expect the defense to be better in 2010 without a doubt. They are young and fast and I believe they are going to surprise a lot of teams. I’m excited to see who is going to step up on offense and if the team is ready to invest in another big weapon for Manning. Look for RB Brandon Jacobs to have an improved year and get back to knocking people down, north and south. DE Osi will have some reassuring to do after his 2009 season, by playing his heart out and convincing coaches and fans he wants to stay with the team. WR Steve Smith will prove that 2009 was not a fluke by mimicking his success this season. LB Clint Sintim and WR Ramses Barden should get more playing time and OL William Beatty could be starting by the end of the year.

There are a lot of exciting possibilities in 2010. I expect a real battle at the linebacker position during training camp. I believe that will be the most interesting of them all. Will DE/DT Chris Canty and DT Rocky Bernard make a difference? What do you think about the 2010 New York Giants situation as of today, right now?

9. Will K Lawrence Tynes still be on the team for the 2010 season?

10. Will P Jeff Feagles have a better season then in 2009?

11. Will TE’s Kevin Boss and Travis Beckum get more work on the offense?

12. Will WR Hakeem Nicks have a breakout season in 2010?

13. Why are WR Sinorice Moss and RB DJ Ware still on the roster based on their career numbers?

14. Will OL William Beatty be starting at left tackle by the end of the season?

15. Can the New York Giants make it back to the playoffs in 2010?

2010 New York Giants: The Linebackers

I saved the best for last. Lets discuss the linebackers for a moment and see if we can figure out this situation. The New York Giants parted ways with defensive general Antonio Pierce and the team has yet to replace him. AP will sorely be missed from a leadership stand point and the NYG Reporters wish him well in all of his future ventures. The Giants still need a MLB though and many predict it will come on day one of the 2010 NFL Draft. You’ve heard the names, LB Rolando McClain, LB Sean Weatherspoon and a few lesser known LB’s are taking the spotlight across the web. In anticipation of the draft, (which is less then 2 weeks away) fans are scurrying to find out all of the information they can about major prospects. I am certain the G-men will come away with a linebacker no later then the second draft day. The New York Giants currently have eight linebackers on the roster.

This is another young group of guys on the team. There isn’t one player with more then five years of NFL experience under his belt. The possibility of adding another young LB via the NFL Draft could make Big Blue one of the youngest at that position in the NFL. LB Michael Boley is a solid player who after a rocky start with the team, has won over a lot of fans with his performance in 2009 (his first year with the team). LB Chase Blackburn is tied (with Michael Boley) for the most senior linebacker, with five years of NFL experience. Blackburn is a guy who I would like to see remain a New York Giant for his entire career. The guy can do it all and I never see him complaining about going to work. This might be a good time for the coaching staff to consider starting Blackburn this season at the MLB position. Clint Sintim should see an increase in his playing time in 2010. I expect great things in the future for Sintim.  LB Jonathan Goff, LB Gerris Wilkinson and LB Bryan Kehl will all have an opportunity to make a name for themselves on tape. That leaves LB Kenny Ingram as the odd man out, if they bring in another linebacker via the NFL draft or free agency.

Zak DeOssie, who was practically born to be a New York Giant, has blue blood running through his veins. His father, Steve DeOssie played many years for the New York Giants. Now that he has three seasons under his belt, I’m excited to see what he can do this year. Let me ask you all a question, is this the year that GM Jerry Reese decides to let the existing LB’s fight it out for the coveted starting role? There hasn’t been much free agent activity at the position thus far. The only linebacker I can say will be a starter for certain is Michael Boley, the rest are up in the air as far as I’m concerned.

Former NY Giants RB Tiki Barber Blasted in Media

I’m not going to say this is comical, because there is nothing funny about this story. The New York Post has reported that former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber, has broken up with his eight month pregnant (with twins) wife for a 23-year old blonde intern. The news came as a shock to some because Tiki and Ginny, were married for 11 years. The way the media is attacking him now, this is going to be an enormous blow to Tiki’s ego and a story that has just started to catch fire. I expect there to be even more news on this story, daily, for the remainder of the week. The man will need to figure of what he is going to do. The New York media are going to harass him constantly over this one. Barber turned 35 years old yesterday.

A lot of people never forgot how Barber left the Giants or some of the things that he said about the team in the media. Some can’t forgive the bashing Tiki gave Eli, about the Super Bowl MVP Manning’s leadership skills, on national TV no less. He was a part of our team and a very good running back is how I will remember him. I will also never forget how he left the team though. I never quite got that bad taste out of my mouth after he left. Everyone will surely be waiting to hear what Barber’s reaction and explanation is going to be. Personally, I think it’s his business and something they will have to work out on their own.

2010 New York Giants: The Offensive Tackles

The New York Giants offensive line has been one of the best in football for a very long time. There were a lot of injuries in 2009 but QB Eli Manning seemed to be moving around like a jack rabbit quite a bit in the backfield. I would never say anything bad about this group of men who protect Eli. Last season seemed a bit strange in multiple areas, not just the O-line. I’m willing to accept that and have confidence that the Giants offensive line will once again become a wall to opposing defenses in 2010. The New York Giants currently have six offensive tackles on the roster.

Second year left tackle William Beatty, performed pretty well this year. I would not be surprised to see him become the starting left tackle at some point in 2010. This of course is based upon the promise he showed in a dismal 2009 season. David Diehl “doesn’t care where you play him, just get him on the field” would most likely switch to an offensive guard position. Diehl is a young veteran presence on the team that the rest of the tackles can learn from. Players like Adam Koets, who have been on the team for three seasons now and could blossom into a very good starter. Guy Whimper is a mainstay and has played well in New York. He will need to step up his game during training camp this year to lock down a permanent spot, the Giants seem to be experimenting with different options and it may include bring in some other talent at the offensive tackle position. Herb Taylor is a great depth guy and team player but along with Whimper as his primo competition, may need to pick his game up during the 2010 training camp.

2010 New York Giants: Kickers and Punters

I will try to make this as quick as possible for all of you that hate kickers. The truth of the matter is that this is an area of the team that has not been performing very well. There are four Kickers/Punters on the 2010 new York Giants roster currently. Field position and field goals are a very important part of the game, they need work in this area. Let’s begin with K Lawrence Tynes. The Giants fans I have talked to about Tynes seem to be split on their opinions. Some still remember the fateful day back during the 2007 season, when Tynes beat the Packers to send Big Blue to the Super Bowl. Others think he has been less then reliable when we needed some FG points. Personally, I would like to see Tynes replaced but only if it is a better kicker. I’m sure the front office is shaking their heads saying “Really? a better kicker, now that’s an original idea” but what I mean is, if no solid veteran kicker is available, I guess Tynes will have to do for now. Even though, my stomach turns to knots every time he lines up for a FG. The New York Giants will never draft a kicker or punter.

Jeff Feagles is a seasoned veteran and mostly known as the best directional punter to ever play the game. He is a true weapon to have on your team. Father time seems to be catching up with Feagles who has played in 22 NFL seasons. His numbers were off last year and he didn’t seem to be getting the same distance that coaches and fans have grown accustomed to. Still, the team decided to re-sign Feagles to a one year deal and see how much he has left in the tank. Any true football fan loves Feagles because of his toughness and longevity. He remains one of the only lights that could ever shine on the punter position.

K Sam Swank and P Jy Bond are on the roster as training camp motivation. I doubt that either of these guys will be on the team once the season starts. It would take a Herculean effort to replace P Feagles or K Tynes at this point. Out of the two, Swank has the better chance of making something happen.

2010 New York Giants: The Tight Ends

Were you happy for former Giant Jeremy Shockey, when you saw him win the Super Bowl or were  you hating on him? (Congrats Jeremy) The New York Giants have become a more calmer and methodical team in recent years. The fire that Jeremy Shockey brings to a team is missing. That doesn’t mean it is a bad thing either, it’s just the way it is. TE Kevin Boss has stepped up and become a reliable tight end. He has made many terrific catches, some in heavy traffic, to keep the Giants in close games. I would love to see Boss get more balls thrown his way. He has proven to be willing and able. The Giants currently have five tight ends on the roster.

Travis Beckum is a different story. He is a TE with a lot of promise but someone who didn’t get much playing time last season, which was his rookie year. Some have said that he plays like a WR and could even be thrown into certain situations as such. Giants fans are curious to see Beckum have a great game and prove he call ball at the next level. His lack of playing time wasn’t his fault though, the coaches were having a field day with the productivity of the wide receivers in 2009. The other tight ends are brought in mostly for blocking situations. One of them will surely be off the roster by the time the season starts.
