2012 Pro Bowl Weekend Coverage: Let’s Go NFC!

January 29, 2012

NEW YORK – As all of you probably know by now, there will be no Giants playing in the Pro Bowl because they will be playing in the Super Bowl. Still, QB Eli Manning and DE Jason Pierre-Paul were voted in as starters. Both of those guys deserved the honor but so did a few guys who were not voted in. WR Victor Cruz might be right up there on the top of the list. You could make an argument for CB Corey Webster, S Antrel Rolle and P Steve Weatherford. Most of the Giants lost considerable time with injuries or they might have made the squad too, like DE Osi Umenyiora, WR Hakeem Nicks, DE Justin Tuck and TE Jake Ballard. Still, I’d rather see them all in the Super Bowl.

What can Roger Goodell do to make the Pro Bowl more interesting? One idea is to use it as a tool overseas to showcase the players. This will never happen because the game doesn’t mean anything other then the honor of being voted in. This would discourage new fans overseas and hurt the NFL inevitably. Perhaps more awards need to be given out such as the UFC does with individual bonus pay for a variety of awards. The NFL should do more of the old school things like defensive lineman challenge and skills contests over the weekend. I would also include a ‘Strongest Man in the NFL’ contest, a ‘Smartest Man in the NFL’ contest and a ‘Fastest Man in the NFL’ contest. I’m sure I will watch some of the game but there is no masking the fact that players do not want to get injured in this game and risk their contracts. And who can blame them?

I’m not sure if this is a game that should be played by the highest paid athletes in the game. I believe all Pro Bowlers should have to attend the festivities and be available for press and what not. Let the Pro Bowlers actually enjoy the event with their families and have some player only activities and meals set up for privacy. The question that remains is what kind of a game will be played? Perhaps an old school gridiron game in throwback uniforms but using the most promising prospects in college football? This game should be transformed into a meaningful event using old school gear and uniforms. The Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams MVP’s of the game win cars. Only then can you take this overseas to truly show the history and tradition of American football. Each game ticket can include a 4 hour DVD of game footage from that years Pro Bowl players. They can be handed out at the stadium, something well produced. Pro Bowl players have permanent decal on helmet the entire year following the Pro Bowl. Return to Hawaii once every 5 years. Give the Pro Bowl players diamond chains with the diamond charm of the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl logo or whatever it is that year. Something to go with a Super Bowl ring.

What are your suggestions on how to make the Pro Bowl more interesting and worth while to the fans and players. What is your final score prediction? I’m predicting an NFC win over the AFC by the score 47-35.

The Brothers Manning, A Real Possibility in New York?

January 28, 2012

NEW YORK – I know you are all thinking the same thing I am. If the Colts are preparing the world for the departure of Peyton Manning, would brother Eli Manning lobby the Giants to sign him right before Super Bowl XLVI? That would give both brothers, two rings against New England, in Peyton’s house in Indianapolis, (what a goodbye to Indy fans, winning the Super Bowl as a Giant at Lucas Oil) are you kidding me? Could the Manning brothers coexist in one franchise? Would this partnership make the Giants stronger offensively? I have all of the faith in the world in Eli Manning, there is no question there. I guess the only people who really know are Peyton and Eli. If you’re Peyton, do you sign for $1.00 or how would that work? Is having the elder Manning on the team strictly for his mind worth it for New York? It’s a head scratcher but worth looking at. And just for fun, could you imagine Peyton Manning as the Giants OC, Eli Manning as the QB and father Archie Manning as the QB coach? Has it ever been done?

At the very least, signing Peyton Manning to the team for next season would be like getting an elite offensive coordinator. If he can come back healthy, you have the greatest backup QB in NFL history. If he is unable to return, give him a shot as offensive coordinator or QB coach. The main question remains, how would the brothers work together? Have they outgrown the competitive games between each other enough to embrace the benefits of such an arrangement or would they regress to petty arguing? This has got to be the most intriguing question of the day, ponder the possibilities in this scenario. I’m sure Giants GM Jerry Reese will read this and at the very least consider it. In fact, he probably thought of this long before I did and has the numbers crunched and an offer drawn up, just in case. Would Peyton motivate Eli or hurt him? Personally, I think these guys can do whatever they want and make it happen. I know that offensive communication during games between Eli and Peyton would be effortless and immediately understood since they have been doing it since childhood together. I think they would eventually click and cause chaos for opposing defenses.

In sounds insane to read these words or contemplate them out loud with friends but the Colts could make it very real. The way the media is covering this story, it looks like the Colts are opting for the controlled crash rather then the abrupt departure. Which makes sense when dealing with one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. If Peyton himself knows he is done physically with the NFL, I would imagine at least a 3 year stint as an offensive coordinator not long after that, I expect him to be successful. How would Eli Manning feel about brother Peyton coming to his team?

Would you like to see the Manning brothers working together on the Giants?

Congrats to Victor Cruz on Winning The Vizio TVP Award

January 28, 2012

NEW YORK – On behalf of the nygreporter, I would like to say Congrats to New York Giants WR Victor Cruz on winning the Top Value Performer Award given by Vizio and voted on by the fans. I am happy that I have followed his career from training camp back in 2010 in Albany. You knew you were looking at a good football player. He was catching everything thrown to him and had worked out during the lockout with QB Eli Manning in Hoboken. Which was nothing for Cruz who grew up in Paterson, so he is very familiar with Hudson County New Jersey. So Cruz hung out with Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning and played catch on a high school field. Cruz is a star now in the New York and New Jersey areas. The well mannered and friendly ‘Salsa King’ is a good face for New York football and all of the local kids who hope to play for the Giants one day. Expect to see a lot more of him.

How about the job Giants GM Jerry Reese did with this young man? There are three players that need to get paid next year and they are WR Victor Cruz, DE Jason Pierre-Paul and DE Osi Umenyiora. I’m convinced Osi needs to finish his career with the Giants and be signed for a long term contract. The same goes for Victor Cruz who deserves a five year deal in my opinion. I would like to say good luck to Victor and the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. The fans are behind you guys hunting those rings. I’m all in!

The Super Bowl is now only 8 days away and the Pro Bowl is tomorrow 1/29/12 at 7:00 PM EST. Enjoy the game NFL fans!

What are your thoughts on Victor Cruz and the incredible season he continues to have?

How Do You Beat Belichick and The New England Patriots?

January 27, 2012

NEW YORK – You can be sure of one thing on Super Bowl Sunday, the New England Patriots are going to play unconventional football. The Giants special teams group will need to play their best game of the year. I expect Big Blue to win 38-27 as I’ve said before. Giants DC Perry Fewell will need to have his head screwed on right for this one and stay focused on the game plan. The Giants defense is going to hit Tom Brady often and knock him down every few plays. Keep an eye on those speedy running backs of the Patriots on the outside. I would work on that a lot and defending play action. Brady will throw five or six bomb passes in this game and at least one will get intercepted. Corey Webster deserves a Super Bowl INT for his season.

Some specific players that will need to bring their game to another level are DT Linval Joseph, DT Chris Canty, WR Jerrel Jernigan, LB Jacquian Williams, CB Aaron Ross, RB Ahmad Bradshaw and TE Jake Ballard. There are other players too but if these guys played the game of the year for themselves personally, the Giants might have the lead the entire game. With only one win left until NFL immortality, the Giants must follow the leader and relax as Eli Manning does. He is calm, cool and deadly. The Giants players and coaches know they can beat this Patriots team, they must not let that get to them. Stay focused and relaxed and enjoy the ride, because Eli Manning will not be denied. Giants fans will most likely see a lot of the ‘Nascar’ defense with all defensive ends lined up. This will create havoc and force a turnover or two possibly, hopefully.

My pre-game defensive stars of the game predictions are DE Jason Pierre-Paul, LB Mathias Kiwanuka, DE Osi Umenyiora, S Antrel Rolle and CB Corey Webster. The Giants have five main threats from the Patriots offense, they are QB Tom Brady, WR Wes Welker, TE Rob Gronkowski, TE Aaron Hernandez and RB Danny Woodhead. The Giants offensive threats are deeper then the Patriots when you look at it. The offensive weapons for Big Blue include QB Eli Manning, RB Ahmad Bradshaw, WR Hakeem Nicks, WR Victor Cruz, WR Mario Manningham, RB Brandon Jacobs and TE Jake Ballard. Giants special teams coach Tom Quinn is going to need a solid game plan for the Patriots in this game. Expect the desperate Belichick to turn into trickster if the game is close.

How would you stop the Patriots offense if you were the Giants defensive coordinator?

The New York Giants Are Going to Win the Super Bowl!

January 26, 2012

NEW YORK – The New York Giants are going to beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl by the score of 38-27. This is my prediction. I think Tom Brady will throw at least 1 INT while Eli Manning is solid with 400 yards and 4 TD’s, O INT’s as he wins Super Bowl MVP for a second time. The Giants defense will hold and cause a few turnovers. I’m expecting two turnovers by the Patriots, that lead to 2 quick Giants TD’s. Victor Cruz should have at least 2 TD’s. I think Jake Ballard will also have a receiving TD. And I expect Super Mario Manningham to grab a SB TD! Hakeem Nicks will be double teamed the whole game. The Giants defense will sack Brady at least 3 times. JPP will have a very good game and play on another level to confirm why is was voted into the pro bowl. I would like to introduce the world to No.90 Jason Pierre-Paul for the Giants. Just in case you haven’t seen him play.

I like the fact that Eli will play in Indianapolis. This is the most intriguing part of the game to me. Tom Brady might be seeking revenge but Easy Eli is all about producing results on the field and owning the fourth quarter. I expect no less in this game from him. Winning this Super Bowl simply means that Eli Manning is officially standing right next to Derek Jeter in the all-time clutch player award in New York lore and New Jersey lore as well. The thing is, I believe that Manning really wants this game more then Tom Brady and there is nothing Belichick or Brady can do about it. Perry Fewell will need to call the game of his life but Manning is already in the discussion for greatest Giants QB of all time. The Giants will win the next Super Bowl ring on February 5th with all day coverage from @nygreporter on twitter up until game time. I’ll do my best at halftime lol and then do some post game coverage.

The New York Rangers are playing well this year but we need the Knicks to get it together. I now they will eventually. This is the best team in years for New York fans. It is great to be a New York fan in general right now and the Yankees coming up. It feels like there was just a small earthquake in New York, weird. I expect the Patriots to put up a good fight but the Giants simply have this teams number for some reason the past few years.

What are your final score predictions for the Super Bowl? Who will win the Super Bowl MVP award?

12/24/11 Christmas Eve DAC Day 24, Ho Ho Ho

December 24, 2011

NEW YORK – It is Christmas Eve everyone and the Giants play the Jets. It’s going to be a fun day with family enjoying the game for me. I hope everyone enjoys their Christmas Eve and I look forward to discussing the game on Monday. This is bigger then the need to get a win, this is a battle for New York. The fans all know it and so do I. There is a lot of pride on the line in this game for both teams and coming out with the win is a must. Just like in that movie “The Invasion” we need to get some Big Blue jerseys in MetLife stadium for the game. Excuse me, I mean Giants stadium.

The Giants have to play and beat the Dallas Cowboys next week in the season finale at MetLife stadium. That will surely be one of the hottest tickets of the year because the Giants playoff hopes depend on that win. The fans will be out in force rain, sleet or snow for this one. I expect the tailgating to be huge for the finale and fans can have a blast just hanging out until kickoff if they weren’t fortunate enough to get tickets. Never drink and drive of course and be sure to have a designated driver to get you home. Remember, be safe, kids go to games too.

Whatever religion you are or what holiday you celebrate, I wish all of you a happy holiday season equally. I celebrate Christmas and write about what I know. I hope you can all respect that. Feel free to leave a comment about what holiday you celebrate and how you do so.

– Rodney Hampton was generous enough to stop by with a final Christmas wish for our readers and to answer five little questions. I think our readers will enjoy it and yes, this is the real Giants RB Rodney Hampton everyone. Be sure to check out Hamps Camp (www.hampscamp.com) for his football camp and after school programs in the Houston, Texas area. Hello again Rodney and thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. Merry Christmas to you and the family!

Five Christmas Questions for Rodney Hampton:

1. What is your favorite Christmas movie?

Hampton Answer: Rudolph the red nosed reindeer and Santa Claus is coming to town. Classic ABC movies for the holidays.

2. What is your favorite Christmas dinner?

Hampton Answer: I don’t really have a favorite dinner. We always have so much food around, a feast, that there is always something good to eat.

3. What is your favorite Christmas drink?

Hampton Answer: a glass of red wine, a merlot.

4. What type of music do you listen to on Christmas eve?

Hampton Answer: I have a piano that plays by itself and we love to listen to the Christmas carols from there. The piano music really puts me in the Christmas spirit.

5. What Christmas traditions do you and your family have and celebrate?

Hampton Answer: We play a game called The White Elephant Gift Exchange (Google it for the rules) on Christmas day. It’s so much fun because no one can control the gift they receive and some of us purchase gifts that no one wants. It’s so much fun!

1. Rodney Hampton’s Christmas message to nygreporter readers:

Rodney: I’d like to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Take some time and reflect on the year. Make a list of at least five things that you are thankful for. Sometimes we get too consumed with all of the gifts and money being spent during the holiday season. Take some time this year and focus on the small things (sometimes these are the things we take for granted). Remember the reason for the season, and be sure to have a safe and joyful holiday! May God bless each of you!!!

2. Robert’s (nygreporter owner) Christmas message to readers:

Robert: Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of our readers! Thank you very much for continuing to read our articles and see a different perspective on the team. Let’s get in the playoffs and do some work Giants! Eli Manning needs to be in the Pro Bowl. So do a bunch of other players this year. God Bless all of you and your families! Thank you to the military stationed all over the world who cannot be home this year. God Bless and protect you always!

12/22/11 Christmas DAC Day 22, Ring of Honor

December 22, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants added a few players to the Ring of Honor this year. These new members bring the total up to 35 former players honored forever. I like when teams do these kind of things for their star players. It builds on tradition for the fans and connects generations. I took a tour of the old Yankee stadium, the year before it was demolished and replaced by the new Yankee stadium.

Monument Park in the Bronx was a unique experience and I enjoyed being able to see how the Yankees set the bar when it comes to honoring the greats of the game. As a fan, I appreciate the classy way the Giants waited almost 100 years to do this but the time has come. I’d like to see John Mara, Tom Coughlin, Ernie Accorsi, Eli Manning, Rodney Hampton, Charles Way, Jeff Feagles, Jason Sehorn, Osi Umenyiora, David Tyree, Shaun O’Hara, Rich Seubert, Keith Hamilton, Chris Snee, Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs and a few other players added to the Ring of Honor one day.

DAC Fact

The Giants have 35 former players inducted into their Ring of Honor. The G-Men have always been about business and they cultivate a team first attitude. That is why there are no distractions such as cheerleaders. Yes, we all love cheerleaders and they have been a part of the game since pee-wee football but at the professional level, they do nothing to help win football games. The Giants remain one of the few teams to play without cheerleaders. Creating a Ring of Honor is a big move for Big Blue. They normally shy away from acknowledging individual achievements but I agree with the move. With such a storied history, remaining silently humble was a disservice to the fans. The rich history was too much to ignore and they made the right decision to shine a light on it.

What are you feelings about the Giants Ring of Honor? Would you change anything about them?

12/21/11 Christmas DAC Day 21, The Playoffs

December 21, 2011

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans and Happy Holidays! I apologize to the die hard Giants fans who already know what I’m going to say in this article, when I discuss the playoffs. You know the scenario but for those of you who need to catch up on the information highway, the Giants need to win both of their final two games of the 2011 season. Both of these teams, the Jets and Cowboys, are formidable opponents. Both of these games will be played at MetLife stadium. The Giants have no choice but win these games or face a third straight year without a postseason game. Nobody wants to see that happen and the reason for all of this misfortune is quite clear, the injuries.

The Giants simply need to win the next two games, hope for some of their players to return from injury and give round one everything they’ve got. We know that QB Eli Manning will do his part and make things happen. I’m more concerned with the defensive personnel then I am with the offense. Is it crazy to think that GM Jerry Reese would bring in a veteran defensive back for the playoff run? Anything is possible I guess. It all comes back to the fact that Big Blue needs to win the next two games. If they do win the next two games, one still has to wonder how deep they can go in the playoffs with the 28th ranked defense.

If the Giants somehow miss the playoffs for a third straight year, what happens? You can’t realistically fire coaches over players getting injured, that just isn’t fair. The pressure from fans might too be too much to overcome for the Giants front office this year, I believe changes are inevitable and will occur swiftly following the end of the season. I also think the G-Men have a great shot at making the playoffs still this year. Two huge games back to back to end 2011, the year of the heart attack and lock out. I cannot imagine this crazy year ending any other way.

DAC Fact

I told you about the New York Giants making the playoffs dozens of times in their history. But do you know how many playoff wins they have? The overall postseason record is 20-24 and the Giants have a 5-4 playoff record since 2000. They are also 1-1 for Super Bowl appearances during that period of time. The lost to the Baltimore Ravens in 2000 and beat the undefeated New England Patriots in SBXLII. The longest drought in Giants history for missing the playoffs is 17 straight seasons from 1964-1980 Let’s hope that ancient history, stays ancient history, and never repeats itself again.

Will the New York Giants make the playoffs this year? Yes or no? What do you think?

12/19/11 Christmas DAC Day 19, Giants Stadium

December 19, 2011

NEW YORK – I could not let a whole advent calendar pass without giving a day to our beloved Giants stadium, with the deep blue sign and GIANTS STADIUM proudly displayed across the face of the stadium. Yes, the new stadium is up and has been for a little while now, one year. The old name of New Meadowlands stadium was replaced by MetLife stadium when the Giants and Jets agreed to sell the naming rights. Many fans were hoping to see JetBlue stadium or Green Giant stadium but they weren’t meant to be. The billion dollar behemoth had been built and needed a name. Yankee fans weren’t too pleased with MetLife stadium and at least half of all Yankee fans are New York Giants fans. What can you do?

But before the ‘House that PSL’s Built’ was erected ($1.6 billion dollars), there was Giants stadium. Big and Blue and home to millions of Giants fans. Arriving to a game a couple of hours early meant you were tailgating and there is nothing more fun then tailgating with your friends before a big game at your home stadium. The sea of blue is what I call it in the parking lot. You’ve got people from all over the tri-state area in that parking lot. If you are going to the game with noobs or adults who dislike the elements of weather involved with tailgating, you can go to a local bar for your pre-game hang out for a bite to eat and a drink. Personally, I think the best bar around Giants stadium is Red’s Bar. I have been going there for years and it serves as a solid meet up spot for you and your friends. They even have the infamous Giants shuttle to the parking lot area. A diabolical looking blue mini school bus designed to look like a Giants version of the ‘Slap Shot’ bus. If you haven’t been to Red’s Bar you should stop by before or after a game, they are good people in there.

DAC Fact

Did you know the old Giants stadium was opened on October 10, 1976? It had a maximum seating capacity of 80,242 fans. The first ever Giants game to be played there was on September 18, 1977 and it was a stadium born into winning with a victory over the Washington Redskins 20-17. Besides Yankee stadium, I have been to that old stadium more then any other sports complex on the planet and it will be missed. The old Giants stadium was demolished in 2010. There will be a whole generation of kids who will never know that old stadium except through our stories and modern libraries of information on the internet. I’m glad I was able to tour both the old Giants stadium and old Yankee stadium before they were demolished. On February 2, 2014, MetLife stadium will host Super Bowl XLVIII for the first ever New York Super Bowl. Will it snow?

After losing badly to the Redskins, the Giants play the Jets next on Christmas Eve at 1:00 PM EST. This is a must win game.

What is your favorite memory from the old Giants stadium?

12/18/11 Christmas DAC Day 18, Game Day Fact

December 18, 2011

NEW YORK – The Giants (7-6 record) play the Redskins at MetLife stadium (Giants stadium) today at 1:00 PM EST. They are about to avenge the opening day loss to Washington. I believe the Giants will win this game out right and very convincingly. My final score prediction is Giants 42 – Redskins 27. The Giants front four on defense will get to the Redskins QB Rex Grossman often. Look for DE Jason Pierre-Paul to have another brilliant game. JPP and Easy Eli are the two ‘sure things’ for the Pro Bowl from Big Blue in my opinion. WR Victor Cruz is making a nice argument for himself too. The G-Men will need all of these guys to step up in order to beat a Redskins team that isn’t so bad really. They had a hot start in the beginning of the year and now find themselves in the middle of the pack (4-9 record) like the rest of the NFC East. Washington lost TE Fred Davis over suspensions and WR Santana Moss is returning from a bad injury. The Redskins defense is middle of the pack and their running game stinks just like the Giants, both are ranked 30th and 31st respectively. I expect the Giants defense to collect 3 sacks minimum.

Big Blue then faces the Jets on Christmas Eve for New York bragging rights. The Jets are going to shut down WR Hakeem Nicks with Revis Island and the running game will struggle. I look for WR Victor Cruz and TE Jake Ballard to have a big day along with QB Eli Manning. The Giants passing attack is potent with many contributors. The Jets simply do not have enough Revis islands to cover all of the Giants threats. If it were up to me, I would run a lot of 4 WR sets against the Jets defensive backfield and dare them to blitz. Manning excels at play action passing.

The really important game will come on New Year’s Day when the Giants face the Cowboys in Metlife stadium for the season finale. I believe the Jets will be the toughest game of all three. The Giants should beat the Redskins and have already beaten the Cowboys this year. The Jets defense is a top ranked defense and I am anxious to see how our top rated passing offense does against them. Look for RB Brandon Jacobs to score a goal line TD and RB Ahmad Bradshaw to break off a long run for a TD with a big play. The bulk of the blow out points will come from Manning throwing 3 or 4 TD’s with maybe 1 INT. The Giants control their own destiny.

DAC Fact

Beating the Redskins is one of the keys to making it back to the playoffs for Big Blue. Do you know how many times the Giants have made an appearance in the playoffs? Can you believe 30 times since 1933! The 1970’s are the only decade since the 1930’s, that the G-Men failed to make the post season. In recent years, the Giants have made the playoffs six times from 2000-2010.

Do you think the Giants will beat the Redskins today?
