NEW YORK – Why? That is the biggest question I ask myself when I hear about players talking in public about house business. I honestly wish Antrel Rolle could somehow reply to this story and tell us exactly what happened because players usually say their words were taken out of context. Until Rolle replies publicly about this, we have no choice but to take what he said from reliable writers and sources as the truth. I just shake my head every time I hear about a player talking about their feelings in public, when will these players learn to just keep their mouths shut in public?
Now when I say players should keep their mouths shut, I am talking about them keeping their mouths shut to the press. I am talking about their personal feelings on another player or coach remaining private. This is not how New York football handles their business and the fans are beginning to get annoyed with Rolle. He is speaking to the press too much about Big Blue for someone who has only been on the team for one year. He happens to be dissing head coach Tom Coughlin, the only coach other then Bill Parcells to bring a Lombardi trophy to New York, since Super Bowl wins were recorded. I am in awe that Rolle would have the nerve to tell the press that Coughlin needs to lighten up because he feels it is effecting his fun. Your fun? Really Antrel?
You know what is fun? Winning a Super Bowl is fun. Playing a season without 16 players landing on the IR List and not turning the ball over 42 times is fun. The Giants are a dangerous team when they are healthy and their second stringers aren’t making mental errors because of a lack of real playing time. The good news is that the Giants are now deep with players who have real game experience under their belts. But Antrel needs to calm down. He is a fan favorite and the players seem to respect him but he will learn what happens to people in New York who like to talk to much. This isn’t Arizona and the fans in New York do not like talkers. He does not want to become a pariah like Tiki Barber has to fans.
I was equally surprised to hear that Kenny Phillips got into the mix and offered some equally judgmental comments. Phillips has been in town much longer then Rolle and I expect him to know better then that. The team stuck by Phillips when he was dealing with a serious injury and he must know that Coach Coughlin had the final word on all of that. All I have to say to Kenny is, come on man.
My advice to Antrel Rolle is simple, the fans have accepted you, shown you love and respect your game on the field. Don’t take the weight of this city on your back because you can’t keep your personal opinions to yourself. You are not bigger then New York or the history of the Giants organization. Take it down a notch and enjoy the fact that you are playing on a solid 10-6 team that had some misfortune in 2010 but will be better in 2011. Think of the millions of New Yorkers and people around the world for that matter, who have to go to work everyday (if they are lucky enough to have a job) in an environment without any fun. You’re better then that Antrel, I know you are.

NEW YORK – I was having a conversation with one of my writer friends about the draft and he mentioned the defensive tackle position being a problem in 2011. The Giants will more then likely have to let one go and most think it will be DT Barry Cofield. Personally, I hope the team doesn’t let Cofield go because he is a rock in the middle and one of my favorite players. Unfortunately, there is a very real possibility that he will not return. If it were up to me, I would lock the man down with a four year contract. This situation at the defensive tackle position will no doubt effect the Giants 2011 NFL Draft but to what extent?
There are a number of possibilities that could occur before the draft in April, such as a free agent signing or a trade. One of the more interesting scenarios I have come up with is the possibility of converting DE Jason Pierre-Paul to a defensive tackle. Now before you all rip my head off just hear me out and remember this is only an idea. JPP was drafted in April of 2010 and was listed at 270 pounds. By the time the 2010 regular season started in September, Pierre-Paul bulked up to 285 pounds and was still flying around the field like he was a welterweight. My question is simple, what would JPP do if he put on another 15 pounds (to round it out at 300 pounds) and got those extremely long arms a yard or two closer to the opposing quarterbacks at the defensive tackle slot? It is a very intriguing thought.
It is extremely unlikely that this will happen but DC Perry Fewell has been using the “nascar” defense quite a bit this year. The name of the game is to get the talent on the field. Imagine Tuck, Osi and JPP on the field for every single down the defense played in 2011, that’s scary. Ultimately, Pierre-Paul’s talent at defensive end will prevail when Osi or Tuck decide to retire or move on to another team. But wouldn’t it be amazing if JPP were to change the defensive tackle position forever with his unique combination of size and speed? Where ever the team decides to play JPP, one thing is for sure, the guy is going to be a pro bowl player within a year or two. He is just too talented and committed for things to turn out otherwise.
I would like to hear your thoughts on whether or not JPP would be a nice fit at the DT spot in 2011 or if you feel he is too valuable as depth for the DE spot. Please keep in mind that the Giants will be getting a guy named Mathias Kiwanuka back from injury in 2011 as well.

NEW YORK – Let the debates begin! Giants fans from all over the country are weighing in on what they feel are the biggest areas of need for the team. Since writing my own needs assessment last week, I have been getting messages from our readers about the 2011 NFL Draft. There is a tremendous amount of interest and remember the G-Men have the 19th overall pick in round one.
You already know that I am torn between drafting a linebacker or offensive lineman (Center) with the first round pick. I’ve had members suggest getting a running back or a tight end in the first round. Surprisingly, the running back position has come up the most besides the linebacker slot. I do not agree with using a first round pick on either a running back or a tight end but I certainly think they should be drafted at some point in the middle to late rounds. I still believe in the Bradshaw/Jacobs tandem but have less confidence in the tight end group.
I had left off the tight end position from my initial draft assessment because of the depth with Boss, Beckum and Pascoe but after taking a second look, it might not be a bad idea to grab another. The current linebackers did a great job in 2010 but they were certainly overshadowed by the performance of the defensive line and the defensive backs. Giants fans long for the old days when opposing teams feared the Big Blue linebackers. New York has always been considered a defensive team first and an offensive team second. New Yorkers love a strong defense and DC Perry Fewell has brought them back into the elite NFL rankings. GM Jerry Reese will surely give Fewell a couple of new toys to play with on an already tough defense.
The player research is in full throttle and Giants fans are throwing out prospect names left and right. I would love to hear some of your thoughts on this subject, do not be shy about leaving a comment in the section below. You do not need to be a nygreporter member to leave a comment. I would particularly like to hear some names of sleeper players that I am unaware of. What are your thoughts and what position do you think the Giants will draft in round one?

NEW YORK – Giants fans can finally exhale with the news that Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell will return to Big Blue in 2011. Fewell was being interviewed by a few teams searching for a new head coach, Denver and Carolina were the front runners but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Denver and Carolina decided to go in a different direction, which means that Fewell will be coaching for the G-Men and honoring the last year of his two year contract. He was extremely vocal about wanting a head coaching position but I still expect him to give his best to the Giants this season. I’m sure he will and I am very excited to have him back for another year. I’m pumped to see how far he can take the defense in 2011. The Raiders are the last team looking for a head coach but all of the experts say it is highly unlikely that Fewell will end up in Oakland.
If Fewell would have been chosen for one of those coaching positions, that would have meant the New York Giants went through four defensive coordinators in four years. They include Coach Spags, Coach Sheridan, Coach Fewell and whomever the fourth DC would have been. That kind of inconsistency is something that does not help a team mesh together or make the players buy into a defensive system. I’m glad Fewell will be around for the 2011 NFL Draft, training camp and all of the preseason games. I think the man has great input and although GM Jerry Reese is Yoda when it comes to the NFL draft, I know he respects Fewell’s opinion.
Coach Fewell has also become a fan favorite and everything I’ve read about the players, tells me they love the guy too. I would have been very upset if the team lost yet another solid coach after short stint. I understand that the Giants organization has to be cautious about locking up staff in long term deals but this might be a good time to offer him an extension before next season. We need some stability at the DC job and Fewell is a great fit with the team, so why wait? Now fans will have to wait and see what the team decides to do with OC Kevin Gilbride. NEW YORK – The G-Men have had their share of pro bowl athletes over the years and this year is no different. The Giants have a total of four players that were selected to go to Hawaii. Unfortunately, the injury bug has bitten C Shaun O’Hara and he has graciously backed out of the pro bowl to allow another player a unique opportunity. The remaining three Giants who will attend are DE Justin Tuck, OL Chris Snee and S Antrel Rolle. I can name 3 or 4 other Giants (CB Terrell Thomas, WR Hakeem Nicks, DE Osi Umenyiora, RB Ahmad Bradshaw) that could have made the pro bowl squad but what good would it do now. I hope all of you Giants fans out there did your part and voted for the players this year.
The NFL made the right choice when they decided to move the Pro Bowl to the weekend prior to the Super Bowl. That was a very wise decision and one that all football fans agree is the right idea. With that being said, the game still needs more work because the fans have no emotional tie to the game. The game doesn’t mean anything and the players simply go through the motions when they are out on the field. Being selected is more of an honor and a recognition of a players skills then it is an actual game. It’s just the way it is now and that is what the game has transformed into over the years. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell still has some work to do with this game before the NFL fan base takes it seriously.
Let’s take a look at the four lucky men who were voted into the 2011 NFL Pro Bowl.
1. OL Chris Snee – This will not be Snee’s first rodeo. He is now a three time pro bowler and a rock solid lineman who plays with a mean streak. He has become an elite offensive lineman and has played his entire career with Big Blue.
2. DE Justin Tuck – Tuck had 11.5 sacks for the year (tied with Osi for the most on the team) and really seemed to take his leadership role to the next level. He deserves to go to Hawaii and it’s nice to see him coming into his own. Tuck is now a two time pro bowler and has played his entire career with the Giants.
3. S Antrel Rolle – Rolle was the second leading defensive tackler in 2010 with 76 solo tackles and 11 assisted. He also had 1 INT and 2 fumble recoveries. He has become a fan favorite in New York and also in the coaches office. Rolle is also a two time pro bowl selection.
4. C Shaun O’Hara – O’Hara was injured for a good part of the 2010 season but still gets love from the voters. He is a three time pro bowler and has been the plug in the middle for the Giants since 2004.
The 2011 NFL Pro Bowl will be held on January 30, 2011 at 7 PM EST. The game will take place at Aloha stadium in Hawaii.

NEW YORK – Fans of the New York Giants were not ready to give up NFL football last weekend, when they were eliminated from the playoffs for the second year in a row. I have been hearing and reading the chatter all over the internet from the bummed out fans hating the offseason. You had all the evidence you could need, if you checked out twitter or Giants.com yesterday during the playoffs and read all of the depressed Giants fans comments.
Well, I’m here to tell the fans to keep their heads up and to focus on the offseason possibilities. When the fans can finally put the 2010 NFL Season behind them, they can then see that the team has some fun work to do in researching and scouting new talent that the team could bring in to help out.
I don’t want to mislead you into thinking that I am not disappointed over the 2010 NFL season because I am. But I truly believe that the fans cannot let it effect how they feel about the team or interfere with their regular lives. I hope that the fans remember to stay true to Big Blue and that they can remain respectful and classy in their comments. You have to realize that the players, coaches and their families read those comments. It’s bad enough when the players and fans have to deal with rival fans moronic comments but it must be particularly hurtful to hear nasty comments from their own fans. Anyone who cheers for the team when they are winning and boo’s the team when they are losing are known as fair weather fans. Stay classy New York and let’s also remember that kids read these articles and comments too.
Also, after the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Green Bay Packers yesterday, all of the NFC East teams are officially out of the running for a Super Bowl title. However, my prediction about the Packers winning the Super Bowl this year is still very much alive. I would love to hear what some of the fans think about this subject. Please feel free to leave a comment below and voice your opinion.

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans! On behalf of the nygreporter, I would like to thank Giants.com for featuring us on your official website. It was an honor to be included in your weekly feature and I hope we continue to live up to your high standards. I will leave a copy of the link below for our readers so they can check it out for themselves. Since the nygreporter was created last year, we have been featured or plugged on numerous different sports websites, podcasts and TV shows but none have been as sweet as being featured on Giants.com.
We would also like to thank our readers, who have kept us going since our inception. We would especially like to thank our regular readers, who make up a solid percentage of the nygreporter’s traffic. We would be no where if not for you all. Giants fans have now entered the quiet time of the NFL offseason. Most Giants fans, are fans of the game of football and will no doubt watch the playoffs and the Super Bowl but it just doesn’t have the same excitement as it would if Big Blue were playing. All we can do now as fans is wait for the upcoming NFL draft, check the free agent market, follow the CBA closely, wait for minicamp and training camp and hope that the 2011 preseason games come quickly.
My disappointment over the 2010 regular season outcome has been replaced with the excitement for improving the football team in 2011. The Giants are a very good team to begin with and adding some key players will only make them stronger. Let’s hope the Giants get back to work sooner then later and feed the hungry fans with some good news.

NEW YORK – It’s never too soon to search for improvements. I would like to take an early look at the New York Giants 2011 draft needs. These draft needs will absolutely change by the time the draft arrives on Thursday April 28, 2011. Keep in mind that the NFL now holds the 1st round of the draft on Thursday night, rounds 2 and 3 on Friday night and rounds 4 through 7 on Saturday. The times have not been released yet but that’s the schedule. The New York Giants will have the 19th overall pick in the 1st round.
So let’s take a look at some of the needs for Big Blue. The first two positions that pop into my mind are Linebacker and Center. I would not be surprised one bit to see either of these positions taken in the first round. I would also not be surprised to see the Giants take two offensive linemen by the time the draft is over. I made the same prediction last year but the Giants surprised me by taking a defensive end with the No.1 overall pick. A pick that proved to be awesome because DE Jason Pierre-Paul had an impressive rookie season and he will continue to develop into a beast. If there is one thing that I am certain of, it is the fact that Giants will not take another defensive end with their first pick in 2011.
The Giants will more then likely dip into the free agent market once again in 2011, so I’m not sure where these needs will be on the chart come April. I can only make my guesses based upon what I see today. The Giants need to get more help on the offensive line to protect franchise QB Eli Manning and they need to get a serious playmaker at the linebacker position. I’m not knocking LB Jonathan Goff who did an excellent job in 2010 replacing the retired LB Antonio Pierce. The team still needs more fire from that area and I would be shocked if the G-Men did not pick up a return specialist in the late rounds. Let’s take a look at the early bird special.
2011 NFL Draft – New York Giants Edition, player rankings are current as of 1/03/11.
1. Linebacker/Center – Stefen Wisniewski of Penn State is the No.1 ranked Center in the draft by CBS Sports. The No.2 Center on that list is Kristofer O’Dowd of USC.
2. Center/Linebacker – Greg Jones of Michigan State is the No.1 ranked MLB in the draft by CBS Sports. The No.2 MLB on that list is Quan Sturdivant of North Carolina.
3. Cornerback
4. Running Back
5. Offensive Tackle
6. Linebacker
7. Return Specialist – CB/WR
Please feel free to give your opinions and your own draft needs assessment in the comment area. I know it’s a bit early to do this but I love the draft and couldn’t wait. As I mentioned, I’m sure this draft order will change a couple of times before April rolls around.

NEW YORK – You would think that finishing the season at 10-6 and taking 2nd place in the NFC East would be considered a fairly successful season. But not in 2010 when the Giants mishaps piled up higher then the Empire State building and the team missed the playoffs for a second year in a row. It was not fun to watch and deep in my heart, I know that the team played much worse then their 10-6 record misleading shows. You cannot win in the NFL if you turn the ball over 42 times (that is not a misprint) or put 16 players on the IR list. Big Blue was the cruel recipient of both of these issues mentioned and much more. The 2010 NFL season was sweet and sour for most Giants fans, including myself.
In a year when QB Eli Manning topped the 4,000 passing yards mark and threw 31 touchdowns (he is only the second Giants QB to throw over 30 TD’s in a season), the thing that stands out most is Manning’s 25 interceptions (plus his 7 fumbles). I have to admit it seemed like half of those INT’s came from tipped balls but Easy Eli certainly made some bad decisions more often then I have ever seen before. Brandon Jacobs (2 fumbles) and Ahmad Bradshaw (7 fumbles) didn’t help in the turnover department and had their own issues with fumbles all year. All three of these men are the strength of the New York offense and it was painful to watch them struggle so much this year. Still there is no denying they were responsible for most of the turnovers.
The one area of the team that will absolutely have the most changes is the special teams. Special Teams Coach Tom Quinn in 2010, was the equivalent to DC Bill Sheridan in 2009. The Big Blue special teams were simply atrocious and I fully expect this to be addressed sometime this week before the playoffs begin. If not, then certainly very soon because this group did not get the job done and even worse, lost some games for the Giants. Getting all facets of the team to perform well seems to be a bit like working a rubiks cube. Last year, it was the defense that was horrible. The defense was immediately addressed during the off season and climbed their way up to elite defense status in 2010. This year the special teams was horrible. Let’s see what the team does about that in the coming weeks. Hopefully, that will not mean that the defense and special teams are great next year with the offense turning out to be the horrible group.
Despite the media’s attempt to get head coach Tom Coughlin fired, owner John Mara was very vocal about expressing his admiration for Coughlin and he assured the media and fans alike, that Coughlin would return as head coach next year. I am glad that is out of the way and this nonsense about Coughlin getting fired has come to a halt. Let the man do his job in peace. On a positive note, DC Perry Fewell was the most significant coaching upgrade since Coach Spagnuolo came to town. Replacing Bill Sheridan after a horrible 2009 season was a no brainer. Something is telling me that replacing OC Kevin Gilbride is also a no brainer and a change that must be made in 2011. The offense seemed very sluggish and predictable at times this year. My overall grade for the Giants in 2010 is a B- (thought about a C+ but they did finish 10-6). Let’s take a brief look at my good, bad and ugly list from the 2010 NFL season.
The Good
1. Getting Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell was the biggest change the team made for the 2010 season and it paid off. Fewell lived up to the hype and made Big Blue an elite defense. The players and fans love this guy.
2. Signing S Antrel Rolle. This guy might talk a bit much for the conservative Coughlin but his play on the field is undeniable. He was another significant free agent pick up in 2010.
3. The Giants defense as a whole was dominating in 2010. This includes players DE Justin Tuck, DE Osi Umenyiora and CB Terrell Thomas who were the top 3 defensive players in my mind.
4. Offensive line coach Pat Flaherty and the offensive linemen. This group of men did an outstanding job in 2010 and Coach Pat worked miracles with limited starters and backup players.
The Bad
1. Turnovers, turnovers and turnovers. The Giants had 42 turnovers in 2010, that averages out to about 2.5 per game, not good at all. The interceptions and fumbles must stop in 2011.
2. Dropped, tipped and missed passes by the wide receivers and tight ends. QB Eli Manning’s stats are deceiving because a rash of mental errors by the WR’s and TE’s cost the team games this year.
3. Offensive Coordinator Kevin Gilbride made some questionable calls (I’m being generous) this year. He did not seem to grasp the flow of the games and let’s be honest, the defense won most of the games in 2010.
4. Missing the playoffs in back to back seasons. The 2009 and 2010 NFL seasons, are two that Giants fans cannot forget fast enough.
The Ugly
1. Special Teams was simply bad in 2010. I mean really bad. This group needs more work then the Mona Lisa.
2. Injuries plagued the Giants once again in 2010 and the team finished with 16 players on the IR list, as well as a bevy of players who are banged up and will need off season surgery.
3. Rookie punter Matt Dodge had a terrible first season in the NFL. Inconsistency will get a player cut faster then a cheetah with a jet pack on.
4. The New York media calling for Head Coach Tom Coughlin to be fired. As a fan, there is nothing more disgusting to me, then the disrespect of this man who lives, eats and breathes Giants football.
– In other news, we here at the nygreporter would like to wish QB Eli Manning a Happy Birthday. Manning turned 30 years old yesterday.

NEW YORK – Well Giants fans, we have come to the end of the road. The final game of the 2010 NFL regular season was played today. It’s crazy how quickly the year has gone by, as we are now in 2011. The field in Washington was atrocious and had the players changing their cleats early in the 1st quarter. The internet was buzzing first thing this morning about the game today and the help New York would need from Chicago to make the playoffs. I knew right then, this was going to be a long day but the Giants beat the Redskins 17-14 in a close game.
The first quarter was sloppy as usual for both teams. Sloppy in terms of game play and not penalties because there weren’t any in the first half. The Giants took an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. It should have been 3-3 but Redskins kicker Gano missed a chippy shot at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was almost as sloppy with both teams turning the ball over. Eli Manning had yet another tipped ball INT, which must have set some NFL record because I have seem tons of them this season. The one word that sums up the Giants 2010 NFL season? Turnovers.
The Giants led 10-7 at halftime but Washington QB Rex Grossman was looking like a baller against the Giants defense during the first half. The second half of football was a bit slow with very few big plays. Things continued like this until the final seconds ticked off the game clock. To be honest, the Giants were lucky to pull out this win against the NFL’s worst 32nd ranked defense in Washington. Fans were holding their breath at the end of this game, something fans should not have had to do.
Giants fans everywhere found themselves trying to follow the Bears/Packers game in any way possible. Fans who traveled to Washington noted that the Redskins did not show the score at their stadium, something the team decided to do on their own. But it just wasn’t meant to be as the Packers beat the Bears and destroyed the Giants playoff hopes despite the victory over Washington.
So the Giants finish the season at 10-6 and 2nd place in the NFC East. Not a bad season but certainly a disappointment to the fans and Giants organization as a whole for missing the playoffs two years in a row.
The New York Giants 2010 NFL season is officially over!
Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game today.
– QB Eli Manning had a decent game and finished with 243 yards 1 TD and 1 INT
– RB Brandon Jacobs had a pretty good game and finished with 49 yards and 1 TD.
– WR Mario Manningham had a good game including a 92 yard TD catch in the third quarter. He finished with 101 yards and 1 TD.
– OL Rich Seubert was carted off the field in the 1st quarter with a dislocated knee cap. He was in a lot of pain and I hope he is OK.
– DT Barry Cofield made significant contributions to the team today including batting down a ball in the 1st quarter.
– CB Terrell Thomas had a very nice day and led all defensive tacklers in the game.
– TE Kevin Boss had a couple of catches and finished with 29 yards.
– LB Jonathan Goff had a very nice game and was making plays all over the field. He also had a forced fumble.
– WR Derek Hagan had a nice game but also dropped a sure TD in the endzone during the 1st quarter. He finished with 70 yards.
– RB Ahmad Bradshaw had a very quiet game and finished with only 22 yards.
– DE Justin Tuck had a good game, much better then the final stats say. Not bad for a guy who got into a car accident on New Year’s Eve.
– CB Aaron Ross was returning punts today once again for Big Blue.
– DE Jason Pierre-Paul continues to develop into a monster player. This guy had a key fumble recovery and is going to be special.
– OL Kevin Boothe replaced OL Rich Seubert who went down with an injury.
– DE Osi Umenyiora made some key plays for the Giants defense today including 2 forced fumbles and 2 sacks. He set an NFL record with 10 forced fumbles in a season.
– S Antrel Rolle is simply a baller. He had another solid game for Big Blue.
– The Giants defense had a shaky game but came together when it mattered. They set a new NFL record for recovered forced fumbles (22) in a season and finished with 2 sacks, 1 INT and 3 forced fumbles.
– The Giants offensive line was playing on fumes and did an outstanding job considering how many starting players were out. They did not allow a sack.
– K Lawrence Tynes who was enjoying an awesome year, missed a crucial FG late in the third quarter. He also made 1 FG and both extra point attempts.
– P Matt Dodge continued his awful rookie season by having another up and down game.

NEW YORK – Why? That is the biggest question I ask myself when I hear about players talking in public about house business. I honestly wish Antrel Rolle could somehow reply to this story and tell us exactly what happened because players usually say their words were taken out of context. Until Rolle replies publicly about this, we have no choice but to take what he said from reliable writers and sources as the truth. I just shake my head every time I hear about a player talking about their feelings in public, when will these players learn to just keep their mouths shut in public?
