Giants Need to Win Five Games Before the Bye Week

NEW YORK – I was talking about the season with one of our readers here and expressed how I thought the Giants needed to win five games before the bye week in order to make it back to the playoffs. Which pretty much means winning the next five games in a row. I am sticking by what I said and I truly think it is an important benchmark, because we all know the second half of the schedule is brutal. I understand that any NFL team can win on any given Sunday but this schedule is ridiculous. If the G-Men fail to win five of their first six games, I think there is a real possibility of becoming a 500 team or maybe even falling below the dreaded sub-500 mark. Fans can dilute themselves with pep talks but reality bites hard. Of course, I hope that none of this happens and Big Blue makes the postseason.

Giants fans will have to wait until the Monday Night Football game is over to find out if the team will start the season at 1-1 or 0-2. Everyone seems to assume that the Rams are an easy win for some reason. They have a pretty good football team in St. Louis and I hope I don’t have to remind fans about how easy a win the Redskins were. The Redskins kicked our butts all over the field last weekend in a game that fans chalked up as an early victory. Do not get overconfident and take each game week by week, until you start building some momentum. Face reality and understand that the Giants are in last place right now and need to battle out of the basement in a very tough division. After the bye week, the Giants schedule transforms into the toughest in the NFL in my opinion.

The Giants signed WR Brandon Stokley this week in an attempt to bolster their WR corps. I wish Brandon well and hope that he can stay healthy this year. He has only participated in 3 full seasons during his 13 year NFL career, which makes his signing suspicious considering the team has been plagued with injury prone players. He was clearly brought in to help out in the slot and to try and give Manning another Steve Smith type of WR. DE Justin Trattou was waived in order to make room for Stokley and WR Chris Hogan was added to the practice squad. I also question why so much emphasis is being placed on the WR position when the TE, CB and LB positions are clearly in need of some help. All we can do is sit back and have faith that GM Jerry Reese has a plan. The Giants play their home opener against the Rams on Monday night at 8:30 PM EST.

Scuttlebutt Swirls Around Giants Nation About Teams Future

NEW YORK – The Giants lost to the Redskins for their season opener. We are all well aware of that. However, since that loss, the rumors and worry warts have come out in full view and have begun a campaign of shame about Big Blue. It seems like prior to the Redskins game, everyone was full of positivity despite the gargantuan amount of injuries the team had suffered. The latest being star WR Hakeem Nicks and DE Justin Tuck who may miss his 2nd straight game this week. When does it end? Some fans have started to panic causing a mutiny between the true blue fans and fair weather fans. Things could get very ugly if something isn’t done to stop the “sub-500” talk which has become rampant.

There is no doubt that there is cause to be concerned. It is simple math at this point and when you add up all of the first string talent that has been lost for the season (particularly on defense) it becomes hard to argue with the numbers. The Giants are in serious trouble unless these second string players perform like first string players. I need not remind the fans about what Redskins QB Rex Grossman did to our secondary last weekend. What do you think will happen when we play QB Drew Brees, QB Tom Brady or QB Aaron Rodgers this year? Are you starting to get the picture? I’m a positive guy and not one for pep talks, rather I prefer action and seeing results. The Giants need to fix a lot of problems and there is no time left on the clock. QB Eli Manning has his own issues to work out because he has not been himself this entire year. Fans are waiting for him to break out of this funk that seems to be plaguing him despite all of the “everything is fine” talk.

There is no theory or discussion that can replace talent on the field. For three years in a row now, the Giants have fallen victim to the injury bug and there is nothing they can do about it. There is no quick fix for this problem. There is no pep talk that will cover WR DeSean Jackson or WR Dez Bryant. You simply need the best possible personnel on the field to battle with the opposing teams pro bowl players. The Giants do not have their best squad on the field and will have to deal with it. Head Coach Tom Coughlin knows this but must remain the rock for both the team nd the fans. It is amazing how a team with so much talent can remain so mediocre on the scales of progress due to injuries. There needs to be some changes made and GM Jerry Reese knows it. The Giants will face the St. Louis Rams next on Monday Night Football at 8:30 PM EST.

Giants Open Season Tomorrow on Infamous Date in U.S. History

NEW YORK – The Giants 2011 NFL season will finally open tomorrow. Fans, including myself, have been waiting all year for this day to arrive and I’m very excited. The NFL carefully planned this opening schedule because of the date in which it falls on. September 11, 2001 is the most infamous date in United States history since the December 7, 1941 date, when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The NFL has scheduled a game between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, representing two of the cities that were attacked a decade ago on the same infamous date. They also scheduled the New York Jets to play Americas team, better known as the Dallas Cowboys (and called much worse by Giants fans) at MetLife stadium in East Rutherford.

I can still very clearly remember the Giants playing the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football on September 10, 2001. They lost a close game 31-20 that night and when I woke up the next morning, my entire life changed forever. I watched the towers get hit by those planes, like so many other Americans and also knew someone who died in the attacks. He was a Port Authority cop and died running into the buildings to save lives. His story is so courageous that Hollywood made him one of the main characters in the film World Trade Center. His memory is kept alive by those of us in the community that tell people his story each and every year and through the fund raisers given in his name to help kids. You might know someone too who passed away during the attacks ten years ago, I hope you keep their memory alive as well. Former Giants player George Martin has done a ton of work to support the 9/11 first responders and I have promoted his cause since day one. The preseason games and training camps are over. The time has come to put up or shut up. The Giants have a very talented football team and I truly believe they can compete with any team in the NFL. I think they will beat the Redskins tomorrow by the score of 21-17 in a close game. Washington will be fired up from playing in DC on such an emotional day and I expect them to give it their best. These games against division rivals are always the most fun to me because the teams play with a little extra spunk when doing battle. I will be keeping a close eye on the defense and watching how they react to the recent surge in injuries that have decimated their squad. Get ready Giants fans, the season is about to begin!

NFL Season Kicks Off Tonight, Giants Still Plugging Holes

NEW YORK – The 2011 NFL season has finally arrived after one of the worst off seasons I can ever remember. The two big downers were the lockout, which lasted about five months and more recently the injuries that have plagued the Giants before the season even started. The lockout was a drain on everyone associated with the NFL, including the fans who had to endure the constant threat of this season being cancelled. A lot of people were hurt financially, while the big boys argued over billions of dollars. Thankfully, with no time left to spare, both sides came to an agreement and here we are now, just hours away from the 2011 kickoff (Packers vs. Saints at 8:30 PM EST). The rest of the league will have their games played this Sunday.

The Giants mass injury epidemic is the other significant event that has occurred over the past month or so. With the recent news about the G-men losing LB Jonathan Goff for the year, it really starts to hit home when you realize that a good chunk of our defense are 2nd string players and rookies. I have a lot of faith in our players and they know they need to step up but the time for talk is over and they must perform on the field. The Giants brought in a bunch of players for workouts over the past 48 hours to try and plug some holes, including familiar faces with LB Chase Blackburn and LB Kawika Mitchell. Rookie LB Greg Jones will be practicing with the first team and will most likely get the chance to start against the Redskins this weekend. The Giants have lost 8 players (about 15% of the team) due to season ending injuries, two of them got cut and six landed on the IR list, they also have two players currently on the PUP list.

What does all of this mean? It means that fans should just sit back and watch the game on Sunday. I’m completely drained from all of the theories and analysis. When it gets this close to the first game, I tend to relax more because there is really nothing more you can do but play the game. There will be plenty of time to breakdown the Giants performance and speculate on the rest of their 2011 opponents but for now, enjoy the game. We know the situation the team faces with a lack of personnel and we will see how they adapt to that. It will be impossible to separate the significance of the date this Sunday (9/11/11) on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the start of the NFL season for most teams. There will be tributes everywhere you look, as there should be and I’m sure that George Martin will be out there walking for the 9/11 first responders. There will be a lot of emotion this weekend and a ton to digest. Never Forget! The Giants vs. Redskins game kicks off at 4:15 PM EST on Sunday.

Happy Labor Day to our Readers and Giants Fans

NEW YORK – I would like to wish all of our readers and Giants fans everywhere a very Happy Labor Day. I know that these are very tough times we are living in and many of you might be out of work. I have experienced that myself during the past two years of an absolutely horrible economy. The only thing I can say is keep your head up and stay strong because it is not easy when you’re going through it. These tough times cannot last forever. I hope that you all have a very nice day with your family or friends and get out of the house for a little while. Maybe attend a BBQ to commemorate the end of summer, take the kids to the park or just have a few drinks with buddies. Whatever it is that you decide to do, I hope you enjoy yourself.

Some of the people who we know will be working hard are the players, coaches and staff of the New York Giants. They have a ton of work to do in a very short amount of time. The regular season begins in six days (9/11/11 at 4:15 PM EST) when they face the Washington Redskins in DC. Everything is pretty much in place for them to get started, including cutting down to the 53 man Roster and finally deciding on a tentative depth chart. The MetLife stadium (Giants stadium aka New Meadowlands stadium) will be rocking very soon Giants fans and some of you will be the ones doing the rocking. I hope everyone remembers that kids attend these games, so let’s try to keep it classy and drink responsibly (Giants fans don’t need this advice really, it’s the Jets fans we should be concerned with).

Giants Roster Shakeup Continues as Regular Season Nears

NEW YORK – The Giants have come a long way since Monday night. The only problem is they have headed in the wrong direction. I’m one of the most positive Giants fans you will ever come across and even I’m concerned now. Giving a pep talk doesn’t really mean anything when we are discussing the talent on the roster. That speaks for itself and it always confuses me when people talk about staying positive when the team loses star players due to injury. Positivity has nothing to do with on field production. I’m a positive guy but the reality is that the team needs to get some talent on the field and quickly because we are about two weeks away from the start of the regular season.

The Giants have lost CB Terrell Thomas, CB Bruce Johnson, CB Brian Witherspoon and DT Marvin Austin for the entire 2011 season. Johnson and Witherspoon were cut because of their injuries. Rookie CB Prince Amukamara will also be out for 6-8 more weeks due to a fractured foot. Over the past week, the team has also cut CB Woodny Turenne, S Cary Harris, WR Sam Giguere and LB Kenny Ingram. Has anyone else noticed the large amount of defensive players that have either been cut or landed on the season ending IR list? Of course you have. That is why I am concerned and a pep talk just won’t cut it for me at this time. The one player currently on the roster that I would like to see get some playing time is CB Brian Jackson. I have been the only writer I’ve seen so far talking about Jackson (6’0″ 212 pounds) and calling for him to get a shot. He is a quality player and wonderful human being and someone you want on your team. I hope he gets a chance to win over the coaches and fans this year.

The Giants have addressed the massive loss of talent by signing three players over the past week. The new signings include CB Brian Williams, S Derrick Martin and DT Jimmy Kennedy. The Giants also re-signed S Deon Grant, which could end up being one of the most important signings this offseason. The backfield still has a lot of talented guys back there but depth is the real issue. I doubt if GM Jerry Reese is done bringing in players. He is using a pragmatic approach to dealing with these injuries and quite frankly, I don’t think there is a better way to handle it. I also agree that a few of the younger players will need to step up this year and contribute to the team. They may be thrown into the fire but how they react to that will decide their future with New York. It doesn’t seem fair to these players but hey, life isn’t always fair.

On a sad note, the Giants have officially sold the naming rights to Giants stadium. Fans will now have to tolerate it being called the MetLife stadium for the next 20 years. Of course, the true blue fans (like me) will forever call it Giants stadium.

New York Giants Summer Time Blues News

NEW YORK – We’ve had some interesting reports come out this week concerning Giants players. QB Eli Manning has been particularly visible and vocal this week. Manning continued to hold the player workouts in different locations around the East Coast and was very clear when asked who he would rather have as a teammate between Plaxico Burress and Tiki Barber. Not surprisingly, Manning chose Burress. He was also featured in a commercial with his brother Peyton that was hysterical. I wrote an article about it and suggest you check it out if you missed it Eli & Peyton Manning star in Football Cops because it is really funny. Safety Antrel Rolle was also in the news doing a ESPN podcast and DE Osi Umenyiora continues to discuss his contract situation to anyone who will listen. You can’t blame the guy for wanting to get his paper right.

The Giants have also been discussing selling the naming rights for Giants stadium. So far, it looks like they are getting fans ready to call New Meadowlands stadium the MetLife Stadium. I do not like the name personally because I feel it reflects the New York Mets, which I am not a fan of. Most fans agree that JetBlue Stadium or Green Giant Stadium would be a better fit but neither company seems to hear the battle cry. There is still no word about the 2011 training camp and where it will be held. The NFL lockout has now reached 110 days and if it continues any longer, the Giants will surely cancel their annual trip up to Albany. I expect an announcement to come either this Friday or sometime next week about this situation. The Giants simply can’t wait any longer to protect the preparation process for players and coaches. The Giants also announced that they will be hiring special teams assistant coach Larry Izzo once the lockout ends.

OL Shawn Andrews went on vacation in the Turks and Caicos islands. Andrews is one of the most vocal players on the team and can be found on twitter most days chatting it up with fans. I hope the Giants realize what a true social media machine he has become for the team. CB Terrell Thomas held a football camp for kids out in California this past weekend too. He was joined by a few teammates including CB Michael Coe and WR Ramses Barden. It is nice to see Giants players getting involved with communities and also seeing them support each other in their efforts. Great job guys! That is all I have to report for now. There isn’t much football news these days but I’m sure this will change by next week when some really important decisions will have to be made.

New York Giants: JetBlue Stadium or Green Giant Stadium?

NEW YORK – Reports are coming out about the real possibility of New Meadowlands Stadium being renamed the MetLife Stadium. Boy, you really have to love corporate America and the ridiculous amount of money (reportedly between $17-$18 million dollars per year) they are willing to pay to put their name on a billboard. It’s bad enough the stadium will not retain the “Giants Stadium” name or kick out the little brother New York Jets, but now we will have to live with calling our beloved home MetLife Stadium? Really? I’m sure this doesn’t sit well with Yankee fans because of the word “Met” in the title. I  know this because I am both a Giants fan and a Yankees fan.

Personally, if we absolutely have to change the name of the stadium, why not use JetBlue Stadium or Green Giant Stadium? Someone on twitter was the first I credit with calling for the name Green Giant Stadium but I cannot remember who it was. If you read this please leave a comment and make yourself known for this great idea. I could live with either of these two names because of the obvious relevance. Selling the “naming rights” of professional sports stadiums is nothing new and often ends badly. Some of the stadium names across this country are down right awful. Could you imagine renaming Wrigley Field with a horrible corporate name like Pizza Hut Field or Burger King Stadium? Nothing personal against either of those two food chains but come on America, is nothing sacred anymore?

The news is picking up a lot of speed, so I’m sure the fans will hear something very soon about this issue. The paltry $17 or $18 million dollars a year doesn’t seem like enough to obstruct history by placing a railroad spike into the subconscious mind of the Giants fan. In my opinion, some things should just be left alone. The average American is already bombarded hundreds or maybe even thousands of times per day by advertisements. Leave my brain alone I say and let me just enjoy watching my team play football on Sundays. I will not buy more insurance because your name sits in the rafters of my favorite teams stadium.

How would you feel about renaming Giants Stadium (New Meadowlands Stadium) to MetLife Stadium?
