Can the Giants Make it Six in a Row?

NEW YORK – I’m still spinning with joy from the beating Big Blue dished out to Seattle this past Sunday. That was such a great game to watch and I’m glad I can check the Seahawks off of the revenge game list. We owed them and paid them back tenfold. Now that the Giants have won their 5th straight game, the next question naturally becomes, can they win their 6th in a row? Since the Giants play the lowly Dallas Cowboys (that feels good to say) at home this Sunday, the answer is YES!

I have no doubt that the G-Men can and should beat the Cowboys this weekend. The Dallas Cowboys are having their worst season in almost twenty years and their owner Jerry Jones, just fired embattled head coach Wade Phillips yesterday. Not to mention, the Giants have already beaten the Cowboys this year, in Dallas. The Boys sit in the basement of the NFC East at 1-7 and have become one of the worst teams in the NFL. Oh yeah, the Giants also knocked QB Tony Romo out of the game and most likely for the rest of the 2010 NFL season. Romo was the 5th NFL QB knocked out of a game by the ferocious Giants defense. The G-men do not play dirty, rather they have been on this strange streak for reasons beyond our comprehension.

I do not believe the Cowboys will be able to overcome all of these issues on Sunday when they play the red hot Giants at home. I fully expect Big Blue to dominate the game and get to backup QB Jon Kitna early and often. The Giants are just the better football team at this point and experts have said the best team in the entire NFC. I agreed with the experts for once when they said that. The Giants have had a top 3 offense and defense for most of the season and they seem to get better each week. Everything just seems to be coming together for them in every area of the game.

The only issue with this team is the amount of turnovers they have given up this year. This is something Coach Coughlin will undoubtedly work on in practice. That is something the team can work on and correct but the injuries that have been piling up can’t be corrected so easily. The recent news about OL David Diehl’s torn hamstring, sends another solid player to the sidelines. With ten players already on the dreaded IR list, it is crucial to keep the remaining players healthy by any means possible.

The Giants are coming off a nice mid-season bye week, in week eight, that surely helped them rest up for a solid push into the playoffs. There is no doubt they have a tough schedule to close out the year with five divisional games but they are up to the task and should end the season at 11-5 or 12-4 from my estimations. As for the upcoming Cowboys game, I expect the Giants to win by 2 TD’s minimum and put on an exhibition of what a strong defense looks like.

Giants vs. Seahawks, NFL Week 9: Game Notes

NEW YORK – How can I count the ways Big Blue made me smile today? The New York Giants completely dominated the Seattle Seahawks and won the game 41-7. This was the worst beating dealt by Big Blue since the 1950’s. The Giants destroyed the Seahawks in every single aspect of the game. Our readers know that I do not over exaggerate when it comes to the games and I am very fair but when the team is leading 35-0 at halftime, the score speaks for itself. They could have shut the Seahawks out if they really wanted to.

I have not enjoyed watching a game this much in a very long time. The G-Men were expected to have trouble with the loud Seattle fans (The 12th Man) today but they were silenced by the first quarter, when Big Blue took a quick 21-0 lead. Things just got progressively worse for the Seahawks from there on. They could not do anything against a very tough Giants defense and their offense was lead by the green QB Charlie Whitehurst, who hadn’t thrown a TD in his NFL career yet. The Giants gave him a garbage TD in the 4th quarter for his first ever.

Watching this game was truly like watching an NFL team play a high school team. I know that phrase gets thrown around a lot but it is a perfectly reasonable example of the pure beat down I witnessed today. This was one of those games Giants fans will be talking about for years, like the 41-0 beating they gave the Vikings in 2000. I was actually concerned that FOX Sports would stop airing the game for some other TV show, like the Westminster dog show or something like that but luckily it never happened.

Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game today.

– QB Eli Manning was as smooth as silk and had a very good game. He finished with 290 yards and 3 TD’s 0 INT’s.

– RB Ahmad Bradshaw was having his way with the Seattle defense all day. He finished with 57 yards and 2 TD’s.

– WR Hakeem Nicks is a beast, plan and simple. He finished with 128 yards and 1 TD.

– The Giants defense might be the No.1 overall defense at the end of today with this performance. They had 2 INT’s and a fumble recovery and held the Seahawks to 162 total yards.

– K Lawrence Tynes made all of his FG and extra point attempts. He has been redeemed in my mind.

– Newly acquired Will Blackmon was the return man in place of Darius Reynaud, who may have lost his job.

– RB Brandon Jacobs got his groove on and was running very hard today. He finished with 78 yards.

– OL David Diehl left the game in the 3rd quarter but it turned out to be nothing serious.

– Neither offensive lines gave up a QB sack today, something that rarely happens in the NFL.

– TE Kevin Boss scored a TD in his home town. Something the fans were happy to see him get.

– DE Jason Pierre-Paul was in the game a lot today and was pushing linemen all over the place.

– WR Steve Smith quietly had a very nice game, as always. He finished with 46 yards and 1 TD.

– WR Mario Manningham contributed to the win with some nice catches. He had 56 yards.

– QB Sage Rosenfels played in the 4th quarter because of the 41-7 lead.

– RB DJ Ware came into the game in the 4th quarter and almost led all rushers with a nice performance. He finished with 66 yards.

– The Giants completely dominated the time of possession game by having the ball for over 2/3 of the game. They had the ball for 42:34.

– The team still had 5 penalties and 1 turnover, which is driving Coach Coughlin and the fans crazy. But it’s hard to say anything negative about this game.

New York Giants, A Look Ahead

NEW YORK – Hey there all you Giants’ fans! Long time no see! It feels great to be back writing for what I truly believe is the best underdog blog that covers the New York Football Giants! So anyways, jumping right into things I thought I might talk about what is to become of this roller coaster ride we are calling the 2010 campaign.

No, no, no not the politics (voting day two days ago fyi) politics are great if you have insomnia or enjoy headaches haha. Important stuff, just not my cup of tea.

The Giants have been at it for 8 weeks now, 7 games and a bye week. They’ve looked great, awful, okay, and spectacular. If we put their season marking all the high and low points on a graph we could probably out design any roller coaster genius at Six Flags! But in all seriousness folks they finally look like they have everything under control and we can only hope for a smooth ride back to the loading dock.

Perry Fewell seems to have really gotten things going and the defense has never looked better. They haven’t played this well since Super Bowl 42 and all signs seem to be positive. The recent addition of DE Alex Hall from waivers combined with a healthy Keith Bulluck should do nicely to cover the whole Kiwinikua leaves behind, and Jason Pierre-Paul should get a few more looks as well.

Tom Coughlin praised JPP this week for drawing consistent double teams on special teams coverage which is an encouraging sign of his progress. The Dez Bryant return was unfortunate, but they are starting to get things together. Even Matt Dodge has been able to dodge a few critics recently (sorry had to do it) and punted a few good ones in a row now.

It is truly amazing how when things go right everything really starts to mesh. Ahmad Bradshaw is tearing up the field and all of a sudden Brandon Jacobs has 5 touchdowns in the last 4 games. The running game has looked solid and Madison Hedgecock is close to being back from an injured hamstring.

There has been some discouraging news as of late, Shaun O’Hara, center, is out again with another foot injury. OL Adam Koets played nicely in his absence before and I’d expect the same if Shaun is to miss anytime now. Also, the Giants have about ten players on the injured reserved list at this point. The newest of which being Bruce Johnson who is done with a knee injury.

Now that we have seen how the Giants have played and how the rest of the league has played lets take a look at some new predictions for the season. I would just like to note that despite the one surprise loss to the Titans I made some pretty good predictions at the beginning of the seasons and well…Toot Toot! (that’s the sound of my own horn haha).

So quickly here are my updated picks: Win at Seattle, Roll over Dallas, Lose at Philly, Stuff MJD in at home, Take one on the chin from the Skins, Beat a badly coached Vikings team, Take back some pride against Philly round 2, upset the Packers in a game that has home field implication, and roll over the Redskins gaining playoff momentum.

Overall, I see Big Blue headed to 12-4 and a first or second seat in the playoffs! This is contingent upon a few things however, staying healthy is number one right now, a close second is getting special teams in order (I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, Tom Quinn has got to go), and Eli has got to cut down on the turnovers (I strongly believe that at least 6 are not his fault, but he needs to sit his guys down and talk out what to do to improve). If the Giants can maintain their current path then there are great things ahead for this group!

Happy Halloween to all New York Giants Fans

NEW YORK – Hello Giants Fans, everyone here at the nygreporter would like to wish you a very Happy Halloween! Even though Big Blue has their bye week this weekend, there will still be some great NFL games to watch when all of the kids are done trick or treating. The Jets will play the Packers for the 1 o’clock game, a game I think most football fans will be looking forward to. The Vikings will also play the Patriots in what should be a good game and the Saints face the Steelers. It won’t be the same as watching the G-Men play but at least were only half way done with the 2010 NFL season.

I hope that all of the kids who read our stories here remember to be safe today and look both ways when they cross the street. Also remember to have your parents help you check your candy and be sure to have an adult with you when you go trick or treating. And for anyone going to a Halloween party, I hope you have a lot of fun and enjoy the festivities of Halloween.

Giants QB Eli Manning Will Be a Dad Soon

October 30, 2010

NEW YORK – It seems just like yesterday that QB Eli Manning was involved in the draft day drama that ultimately brought him to Big Blue. Since then, all that Eli Manning has done is win a Super Bowl ring, be named Super Bowl MVP, go to the Pro Bowl and win a lot of football games. Not a bad career at all and all of this before his 30th birthday (Eli is 29).

Now it seems like the perfect time for him to start a family of his own with his wife Abby. The local reporters broke the news yesterday about Eli and his wife, expecting their first child. I would like to say Congratulations on behalf of everybody here at the nygreporter and we wish you a happy and healthy child, be it a boy or a girl (boy, boy, boy). Easy Eli comes from a very good family and he has a tremendous support system. I’m sure he is going to make a terrific father and will raise the child the same way he was raised, which is to say properly.

Now for the inevitable debate on the baby’s name. Will they name the child Archie, after his father if it’s a boy? Will Eli and Abby decide to share in the “naming rights” or will they decide that Eli names the kid if it’s a boy and Abby names it if it’s a girl? Only time will tell but the most important thing is to pray for a happy and healthy baby and everything else will work itself out. I won’t drag out this story because I really just wanted to recognize a happy occasion for the Giants team captain. God Bless and Congratulations again!

Giants Defense Goes From Bad to Owning Teams

NEW YORK – The New York Giants defense was atrocious in 2009. It was embarrassing to watch the games in public, especially towards the end of the season. To be fair, it was the injuries that ultimately did the team in last year. There seemed to be two or three players going down or on the IR list every single week. It became so frustrating to see second or third string players on defense trying to contain first stringers on the opposing offenses. The 2009 season was a tough pill to swallow and something that I pray I will never have to endure again in my lifetime. Head Coach Tom Coughlin and GM Jerry Reese went straight to work when the 2009 season ended and brought in coaches and players, who will see to it that it doesn’t happen again.

So here we are now, in the middle of the 2010 NFL season and things are looking up. In fact, the New York Giants defense is owning teams this year and completely dominating opposing offenses. We are now at the bye week in week 8 and the Giants are 5-2 and in 1st place of the NFC East. The G-men have knocked 5 QB’s out of games this year including Tony Romo and Jay Cutler to name a few. They aren’t playing dirty either, all of the hits on the QB’s were legal and just unfortunate occurrences for these gentlemen.

You have to give credit to new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, who has become a favorite to the guys in the locker room and the fans in the stands. He is a huge upgrade from former DC Bill Sheridan who only lasted one season (2009) as the Big Blue DC. Fewell is known as a secondary specialist and it shows with Big Blue having the second best defense against the pass so far this season. They also have the number two overall defense in the NFL thus far.

The Giants secondary has been lights out this year. I have given them the nickname of the “UFO Backfield” because they are flying all over the place. Someone on twitter called the Giants “Nascar” formation (when they have four defensive ends lined up to speed rush the QB) the Blue Swarm, which I thought was a cool name. The point I’m trying to make is that when you start getting the fans to give your defense a nickname, they must be doing something right. The Big Blue Wrecking Crew is getting a upgrade to their name or at the very least, adding another group of tags to be remembered forever. The 2010 Giants could be something special and end up as a top 3 defense by years end in my opinion. Keep up the great work and get those players healthy for the second half of the season.

New York Giants Bye Week Blues

NEW YORK – I know that the title of this story sounds a bit misleading, so let me explain. The Giants don’t have the bye week blues, it is I who has the blues. The Giants are rolling into the bye week as the best team in the NFC and they also have sole possession (5-2 record) of 1st place in the NFC East. I’m happy about their productivity but I have the blues because now we have to wait an extra week before we can see them play again. Sounds selfish I know but they way that Big Blue has dominated the past month gives me reason to want to see more.

After a shaky start to the 2010 NFL season, the G-men seem to headed back to the playoffs. Everything is clicking on defense and the offense has been moving right along but the special teams is the achilles heel of the team this year. The defense has been outstanding and new DC Perry Fewell needs to be recognized for coaching the Giants to the No.2 overall defense in the NFL. This group has been playing like a bunch of mad men. They are 2nd in the NFL against the pass and 3rd in the NFL against the run. What a difference a year makes, huh Giants fans? If this group can stay healthy and continue playing at this high level, they should finish the season as a top 3 NFL defense.

The offense is nothing to overlook either. The Giants own the No.1 rusher in the NFL in RB Ahmad Bradshaw and have the 4th best rushing team in the NFL. They are 9th best in the NFL in passing. QB Eli Manning has had some tough breaks with cheap INT’s going against him via tipped balls but other then that he has been great. A big reason for Manning’s productivity is the emergence of WR Hakeem Nicks, whom I predicted would make the pro bowl before the season started. The offensive line has survived numerous injuries and come together in a big way. RB Brandon Jacobs has been playing team ball since becoming the No. 2 RB and Bradshaw has been lights out. The rest of the WR group has been contributing exactly how we thought they would be. This is an impressive offense that can be lethal when they get in the zone.

I hope the team can get their players healthy and back on the field for the second half of the season. They are going to need every man they can get to make it back to the playoffs and to make a serious run at the Super Bowl. Even with all of the success the team has had, they still placed 10 players on the injured reserve list so far this year and seem to be turning the ball over way too much. There were some serious names on the IR list including OL WIlliam Beatty, DE Mathias Kiwanuka and WR Domenik Hixon just to name a few. This is the second consecutive year that injuries have played a role in effecting the Giants game plan. It must be frustrating for Coach Coughlin but it is nice to see the depth that GM Jerry Reese has put in place finally paying off. I fully expect the Giants to make it back to the playoffs and continue to roll to a possible 11-5 final record. Big Blue will travel to Seattle when they get through with the bye week to face a tough Seahawks team.

New York Giants OL Koets Proving His Value

In the last few years, whenever anyone thought about the Giants’ offense, one of the first things that came to mind was the offensive line. One of the most coveted units in the league, the Shaun O’Hara-lead group has been a real asset to Big Blue.

Nevertheless, there comes a time where every asset depreciates. Fighting against age, O’Hara went down with an ankle injury and has now missed three consecutive games. Looking at a logic standpoint, us Giants fans should be very worried, but yet for some reason we are not. Well, I give you that reason, his name is Adam Koets.

Ever since he had to step up to cover O’Hara’s spot Koets has been  playing with confidence and quality, allowing the offense not to missa beat.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 draft, Koets used to play tackle at the Oregon State University, where he was a second team All Pac-10 Conference selection after helping the team to average 360.6 yards per game in his senior season. Also in his time with Oregon State, he was a three-time Academic All-Pac 10 Conference selection.

Being very smart, and an athletic player for his size (6 ft 5 300 lb), the Giants coaching staff, who favor versatile players, quickly recognized Koets’ ability to play multiple positions within the o-line, and, being in need of a backup center, decided to try him at such position during the 2009 off season.

One season later, this Santa Ana, California, native, sky diving, bungee jumping adrenaline-seeker is exactly what Big Blue hoped he would become: a quality, smart and versatile player able to fill in and keep the high level presented by owner of the position, and, most importantly, allowing me to sleep at night…

New York Giants Face Trap Game

The New York Giants, looking to increase their first winning streak in a year, face the NFL’s punching bag of the last few seasons, the Detroit Lions (1-4), at home in the new Meadowlands Stadium. Easy matchup, one might think. That is where a mistake can be made. As I said, this is a trap game.

The Lions, although having only one win in the season, have more fight in them than meets the eye. Just looking at the games this season, out of the 4 losses, it is very easy to see that those games were not decided until the very end.

In the season opener against Chicago, a blown call nullified a Calvin Johnson touchdown that would most likely assure the win for Detroit.

Then you move on to analyze the Eagles game, and the story continues. The Lions scored a touchdown with 1:55 left, made the two-point conversion, putting the game at 35-32, then on the ensuing kickoff they recovered an onside kick. They were not able to capitalize on that, but again the game was decided on the final seconds.

Against Green Bay, a team that is supposed to be one of the finest in the NFC, once again Detroit was able to push the game until the fourth quarter, the final score being 28-26. These three games could have easily gone either way, and Detroit could be, say, a 3-2 team, just like our beloved Giants.

With that in mind, it is paramount to stay focused and duly prepare for this game. As it is said quite frequently in this organization, “every game is important“. The way the Giants have been playing is impressive and inspiring, however, paraphrasing Antrel Rolle, it is always better to win three in a row than two in a row.

Giants vs. Bears, NFL Week 4: Game Notes

NEW YORK – The New York Giants needed a big win Sunday night and the team did not disappoint the fans by putting on a defensive show and winning the game 17-3. The sack happy G-Men (nine in 1st half alone) also had their Ring of Honor ceremony at halftime. Giants.com was nice enough to have a LIVE stream of the short ceremony that had players from just about every decade. It was an electric night with all of those legends in the stadium and the fans seemed to really enjoy the festivities.

It is clear to most fans that the Giants defense has improved the most thus far and the Big Blue offense seems to be taking a step back each week. The Giants defense played their best game of the season against the Bears and the best game I can remember since the destruction of the Eagles in 2005, when the team had 12 sacks. I do not think Coach Coughlin should be concerned with all of the rumors about his job being in jeopardy. He is a terrific coach and has done a lot for the franchise since he arrived. These fair weather fans needs to keep their opinions to themselves and stop blowing up the message boards with their negativity.

The Giants needed to win this game and that is exactly what they did. They are now 2-2 on the season and might have gotten some of their mojo back.

Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.

– The Giants had their Ring of Honor ceremony at halftime. It was the first time in history, that the team has awarded such honors to individual players, coaches and owners.

– DE Osi Umenyiora had a terrific game with 3 sacks in the first half.

– DE Justin Tuck also had a great game and finished with 3 sacks himself.

– WR Hakeem Nicks had a great game and lead all Giants receivers with 110 yards.

– The Giants defense controlled the entire game and finished with 10 sacks, 2 INT’s and 3 forced fumbles.

– Return specialist Darius Reynaud appears to be a bust at this point. He needs to pick it up.

– Special teams might need a complete overhaul at the end of this season.

– QB Eli Manning had a mediocre game and seems to have recovered from the past two losses. He finished with 195 passing yards 0 TD’s 0 INT’s.

– RB Ahmad Bradshaw continued to show why he is the starter with another great performance. He finished with 129 yards and 1 TD.

– Former RB Tiki Barber was booed LOUDLY when his name was called for the Ring of Honor ceremony at halftime.

– OC Kevin Gilbride needs to prove himself or he could lose his job before the year is up. He is way too conservative.

– RB Brandon Jacobs had a nice game finishing with 62 yards and 1 TD.

– Rookie DE Jason Pierre-Paul had an INT in the 4th quarter that was called back on a penalty.

– The Giants wide receivers continue to drop passes that look like sure catches.

– The offensive line played much better against the Bears and they need to stay consistent if they want to get back to the playoffs.

– The Giants knocked Bears QB Jay Cutler out of the game in the 3rd quarter with a concussion. The second QB the G-Men have knocked out this year.

– The Giants then knocked out the Bears 2nd string QB Todd Collins in the 4th quarter making him the third QB knocked out by Big Blue this year.

– DC Perry Fewell had his breakout game tonight as far as coaching is concerned. Total defensive dominance in this game for Big Blue.

– The G-men are still turning the ball over way too much and need to stop getting so many penalties.

– K Lawrence Tynes missed another FG. He is beginning to make me worry like he did last year.
