My Question to the NFL: What Should I Do?

July 6, 2011

NEW YORK – After 117 days of the 2011 NFL Lockout, I have only one question for the NFL, what should I do? Taking a serious look at this situation has forced me to ask the question. Just like the thousands of NFL employees who make a modest wage working long hours for the teams and offices. What should they do? Just as the LeBron James commercial begged the question to the public, I pose the same question to you NFL, what should I do? I am a football writer and as such I need team news, game news, practice reports, transactions and scenarios to write about.

How much is enough? I am floored by the possibility of losing an entire NFL season because of disagreements over money. I am disgusted by the fact that a room full of adults cannot come to a friendly agreement and get back to work. There are millions of Americans unemployed right now and tens of millions on food stamps. Make a fair deal for all parties involved and stop embarrassing yourselves publicly. If you think the average guy on the street has sympathy for your situation, you are mistaken. The average guy on the street knows he is a small part of making that $9 billion pot of gold for the NFL each and every year. We are 32 days (8-7-11) away from the Hall of Fame game and there is still no deal in place? What should I do?

Should I forget my dream of getting a paid job writing for the New York Giants after almost 3 years of writing for free? What should I do?

Should I give in agree with my family and friends, who tell me that I am wasting my time writing about NFL football? What should I do?

Should I stop being an NFL fan and refuse to buy another ticket or watch another game on TV due to bitterness? What should I do?

Should I become an anti-NFL writer from now on and point out all of the negative aspects of the game and business? What should I do?

Should I drop all of the players on my fantasy football team and never play the game again? What should I do?

Should I delete this website and create a new one dedicated to the philosophy of labor negotiations? What should I do?

Should I take all of my football memorabilia and authentic Giants jerseys and sell them on eBay? What should I do?

Should I stop using any products that sponsor the NFL and their business in protest? What should I do?

Should I handcuff myself to the front gate of Giants stadium like some nut until the lockout ends? What should I do?

Should I stop using my twitter account to interact with other Giants fans and discuss NFL football? What should I do?

At the end of the day, it will be my decision to make and I’m confident that what ever I choose to do, it will be the right decision for me. I will know what to do when the time is right. The issue here should not be all of the questions I have asked above but rather why a loyal fan of the NFL should have to ask all of these questions? At a time when America is hurting, you assume that the fans will be at your doorstep once this lockout ends begging to see the show. After nearly 4 months of headaches, don’t be too sure. It is arrogant to assume that business will be booming following a lockout that should have never occurred in the first place. You reap what you sow and I fully expect the NFL to lose fans over this lockout. Despite the popular belief that the fans will always be there, the reality of unshakeable integrity is overlooked. Some people cannot be bought and some people will not trade honor for glory.

My final question in this article is simple, What will YOU do?

New York Giants: The State of the NFL in 2011

July 3, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants are exactly 70 days away from their first scheduled regular season game on September 11, 2011 against the Washington Redskins. The Giants are also about 40 days away from their first scheduled preseason game against the Carolina Panthers with the game date yet TBA (to be announced) but will occur between August 11, 2011 and August 14, 2011. The 2011 NFL lockout has now reached 114 days and there is still no end in sight. Minicamp will be lost this season. The NFL rookie symposium has been cancelled and teams are changing their regular training camp plans. Free agency has been deeply effected and although team leaders such as QB Eli Manning take it upon themselves to organize player practices, there can be no exception for the real thing. These player practices should add to the shame of this NFL lockout.

Players are literally risking their careers to get in some work. This is absolutely unacceptable. What a sad state we find the NFL in these days. Here we are on this 4th of July weekend and besides talking about baseball, fans have to discuss the stupid lockout and try to guess when it will end or if there will even be a season. You know that things are bad when fans care more about the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog eating contest then they do about football. Still, Giants fans remain loyal because of how John Mara and the organization are handling the situation. The Giants front office have clearly been the most vocal and have taken the lead on more then one occasion during these discussions.

Sports fans will also have a new countdown to endure since the NBA has now started it’s own lockout. When does it end? These deals and new contracts are issues that should have been worked out months before the due date, so the fans don’t have to suffer. The only thing these lockouts accomplish is locking out the fans from their favorite teams and causing a ton of resentment. I think Ray Lewis was right when he said that crime would go up due to these lockouts. The boredom that could take over the minds of our sports society might be too much to handle. Think of a world without sports and then consider what those tens of millions of fans would be doing otherwise. The idle mind is the devils playground. End this lockout and get back to work before things get ugly.

What do you think about the current state of the NFL?

New York Giants Summer Time Blues News

June 29, 2011

NEW YORK – We’ve had some interesting reports come out this week concerning Giants players. QB Eli Manning has been particularly visible and vocal this week. Manning continued to hold the player workouts in different locations around the East Coast and was very clear when asked who he would rather have as a teammate between Plaxico Burress and Tiki Barber. Not surprisingly, Manning chose Burress. He was also featured in a commercial with his brother Peyton that was hysterical. I wrote an article about it and suggest you check it out if you missed it Eli & Peyton Manning star in Football Cops because it is really funny. Safety Antrel Rolle was also in the news doing a ESPN podcast and DE Osi Umenyiora continues to discuss his contract situation to anyone who will listen. You can’t blame the guy for wanting to get his paper right.

The Giants have also been discussing selling the naming rights for Giants stadium. So far, it looks like they are getting fans ready to call New Meadowlands stadium the MetLife Stadium. I do not like the name personally because I feel it reflects the New York Mets, which I am not a fan of. Most fans agree that JetBlue Stadium or Green Giant Stadium would be a better fit but neither company seems to hear the battle cry. There is still no word about the 2011 training camp and where it will be held. The NFL lockout has now reached 110 days and if it continues any longer, the Giants will surely cancel their annual trip up to Albany. I expect an announcement to come either this Friday or sometime next week about this situation. The Giants simply can’t wait any longer to protect the preparation process for players and coaches. The Giants also announced that they will be hiring special teams assistant coach Larry Izzo once the lockout ends.

OL Shawn Andrews went on vacation in the Turks and Caicos islands. Andrews is one of the most vocal players on the team and can be found on twitter most days chatting it up with fans. I hope the Giants realize what a true social media machine he has become for the team. CB Terrell Thomas held a football camp for kids out in California this past weekend too. He was joined by a few teammates including CB Michael Coe and WR Ramses Barden. It is nice to see Giants players getting involved with communities and also seeing them support each other in their efforts. Great job guys! That is all I have to report for now. There isn’t much football news these days but I’m sure this will change by next week when some really important decisions will have to be made.

What would you do with your time if the NFL lockout actually cancels the 2011 NFL season?

2011 New York Giants Training Camp News

June 25, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants have not made an announcement concerning their 2011 NFL Training Camp plans. The training camp is scheduled to begin at the University of Albany from Saturday July 30, 2011 through Sunday August 21, 2011. The recent news about NFL teams (including the New York Jets) opting to cancel their usual training camps at area colleges has brought more strife to local business’ that support the NFL invasion of their town every year. Most reports state that if the lockout continues into July or beyond July 1, 2011 to be specific, the Giants will cancel Albany and hold camp at the Giants facility in East Rutherford.

Now that we are less then a week away from July 1, 2011, I thought it would be a good time to revisit this situation. I’m sure the fans will know a lot more within the next week or so for certain. We have to ask the question about this years training camp being open to the public. This has not been addressed yet by the team or coaches. It may be a situation where only certain days will be open to the public with the majority of them being closed off. I was at training camp last year in Albany and if you are a Giants fan, it has the feeling of coming home and being surrounded by family. There is a sea of blue jerseys and Giants fans are everywhere you look. I highly recommend this experience for any true blue fan who wants to have a nice day with the family (you can find photos from the 2010 training camp in our “Images” tab on top toolbar).

Be sure to check back for updates on this situation. I expect news to come out very soon, now that other NFL teams have started canceling their usual training camp plans and opting to stay closer to home in 2011. This lockout has effected so many people in such a negative way, that I firmly believe that the NFL has lost a small portion of their fan base. When a man cannot eat or provide for his family, the last thing he is thinking about is football.

Did you have plans to visit the 2011 New York Giants training camp this year?

2011 NFL Draft: Best Available vs. Immediate Need

April 15, 2011

New York – There is one question every football fan hears at least once every April. That question is, should their team draft for best available or immediate need? I hear this more then enough from tons of people. I have a philosophy to answer this very question. It is based on logic and an understanding of the New York Giants roster and because I am a fantasy football beast. Who should the Giants invest in the most? The offense or the defense? Well, they were both very good in 2010, regardless of missing the playoffs. My guess is that 3 out of 5 rounds will be drafted for defense within the first 5 rounds in 2011.

Which of the two is a better drafting style? I say drafting takes a little bit of both but only because it means drafting for need first in the early rounds. You do this by simply drafting the best available immediate need player. Save the drafting by “best available” for mid to late rounds. Again, this is only my philosophy on drafting in 2011, I’m not claiming to be Nostradamus or anything. I just think it makes a lot of sense to draft this way.

Round 1: I honestly think a team should draft for need in round 1 without question, there is no debating this topic with me. Take the best LB available if you need a LB. The reason I feel this way (particularly with being a Giants fan) is because let’s say a really good defensive end is on the boards at the 19th pick of round 1, he is the Giants highest rated player on their war room board. I would be shocked if the Giants took another DE to add to an extremely deep group of talented guys running the show in that department. Especially in this years draft, if there is a solid 10-year Center or aggressive DT available, take one of those guys please. Don’t just take the highest rated player. If this is what Jerry Reese does then I apologize and mean no disrespect but I think he knows what I mean. I also think he is smarter than that. The players surely do and so do the fans.

Round 2, 3 and 4: These rounds are a bit more tricky. Personally, I am sticking with drafting for need in rounds 1 and 2 (using the best available player at need of course). Rounds 3 and 4 could be a mix of both. I also think there could be some positions that should not be considered at all. Such as the defensive end position in 2011. There is just too much talent on the team to waste a high draft pick on a DE. With Osi, Tuck, Kiwanuka and JPP alone, the Giants pass rush is insane. There has to be one position on offense and defensive that should not waste anyones time. Still send the scouts out and gather all the intel but get some other positions in the mix come draft day.

Rounds 5, 6 and 7: These rounds should all follow the draft by “best available” philosophy to the letter. Considering the reality that 2 out of the 3, drafted in these three rounds, might not make the team. Always take a WR or CB in the 7th round and be sure he is an excellent special teamer. Stack that area for the next three years/drafts, this includes returners and punters now that it has become a problem area.

If someone came up to you and said “Hey, you can only draft 2 defensive positions within the first 5 rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft. What would those positions be?” For myself, I would have to say defensive tackle and linebacker. Canty and Bernard have a lot to prove in 2011. Cofield hopefully stays and gets paid. The LB group has a lot to prove in 2011 too. We need to see some guys step up including LB Clint Sintim who has the fans on his side. LB Phillip Dillard who looked promising last training camp before going down with an injury. LB Adrian Tracy is another young man who suffered an injury but needs to show up in 2011. What about bringing back DT Jay Alford to help out if he is available?

For defense, I’m most confident in our defensive ends followed by our safety group. The cornerbacks come in third on that list to round out my top three. On offense, I am most confident in the QB followed by the wide receivers. The running backs come in third on my top three list. I’m most concerned with the offensive line followed by the tight end group on offense. Hopefully, FB Madison Hedgecock returns to full strength or I could see FB becoming a problem too.

What do you prefer when it comes to drafting, best available or immediate need?

Giants to Play Panthers, Bears, Jets and Patriots This Preseason

April 13, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants learned what their preseason schedule will be. They still haven’t gotten the times or dates 100% correct but we do know they will play the Bears in East Rutherford on Monday Night Football in late August. It’s the 2nd game of the four. That should be a battle between the defenses and a nice look at the rookies for game two. I enjoy going to a preseason game just as much as I enjoy a regular season game. I know that sounds strange but it’s true. These new players are a part of the Giants family now and I want to see what they can do on the field. I can name a ton of players that I have watched during preseason games or training camp and knew they would be stars. It’s a cool feeling to know that before the general public and a lot of fun to track their careers from day one.

Let’s take a look at the 2011 opponents. The Carolina Panthers were atrocious in 2010 and have the number one pick overall in this years draft. The Bears had a much better season and quite frankly surprised the heck out of me. I did not expect them to play as well as they did in 2010. The Bears have the 29th pick in the draft this year. The Jets have gone deep into the playoffs the past two years and should be good again in 2011. The Jets have the 30th pick in this years draft. The Patriots are not the Patriots of old. They have not won anything significant since 2004 (8 years) but yet continue to win a nice handful of games each year. Their legacy was forever stained (18-1) by the G-Men in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants beat the undefeated Patriots in convincing fashion and took home the Lombardi trophy. It seemed to be destiny for Big Blue following an amazing 2007 season where they were dubbed “The Road Warriors”.

On a direct note to the NFL. We the fans know that you milk every event or action to the maximum and we are OK with that. However, let me share something with you that annoys fans. Please do not tell us that you are releasing a preseason schedule, then not include dates and times. I’m sure that fans would rather wait until you have all of the information to share before this annoying tease. We understand that things could change schedule wise and that dates and times are always subject to change. All we ask is that you give us a few days notice if possible to make arrangements to attend or watch the game on TV. You have the 2011 NFL Draft coming up in 2 weeks and should have plenty of information to share with the fans on that subject. Release the “complete” schedule after the draft or prior to it with a tentative date and time.

2011 NFL Preseason Games: New York Giants

Week 1 – Giants @ Panthers – Date/Time: TBA

Week 2 – Giants vs. Bears – 8/22/11 @ 8:00 PM EST

Week 3 – Giants vs. Jets – Date/Time: TBA

Week 4 – Giants @ Patriots – Date/Time: TBA

Have you ever attended a Giants preseason game? Will you be attending any preseason games this year?

Rodney Hampton Continues Giving Back with Hamps Camp

April 7, 2011

NEW YORK – Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to have an interview with former Giants RB Rodney Hampton. I found Rodney to be a genuine good man who is trying to make a difference in kids lives. He is very passionate about his charity Hamps Camp, which provides after school programs to kids and holds football camps during the summer. Hampton provides a safe environment for kids to express themselves freely and learn about the game of football from a 2x Pro Bowler. Rodney has been involved with charities in Texas, New York, New Jersey and Georgia for many years now and it’s about time he got some shine for it. On behalf of the Giants nation, I would like to say thank you Rodney.

They have some good things going on over there at Hamps Camp and I expect them to have another successful year in 2011. They accept donations for the kids in many ways. Some local area companies provide drinks or hats or snacks. Then of course there are companies that prefer to donate some money. Every little bit helps out the cause and specifically to local Houston companies, if you can donate something to Hamps Camp, please call 1-888-635-HAMP (4267). Get involved today

I cannot not tell you how many compliments I’ve received about that Rodney Hampton interview last week. So many fans were reminded about a player who they love and they had to share their opinions about him. It was a nice treat for our readers and something I will never forget. If you have any original ideas or suggestions for Rodney’s charity, please feel free to leave a comment below or contact them directly. Local Houston media outlets would acquire good karma, if they were to give a plug or two to Hamps Camp and let the locals know all about it.

These So-Called Giants “Experts” Are Trying to Sell Newspapers

April 4, 2011

NEW YORK – If I hear one more New York Giants “expert” say that the G-Men “need” to draft an offensive tackle in the first round, I’m going to freak out on an embarrassing level. The Giants DO NOT need to use their first round pick on the OT position. I would draft a DT (very deep draft at DT) before I took an OT in the first round this year. Now, if they took an offensive lineman (center) I wouldn’t be surprised but it shouldn’t be an interchangeable OT/OG/C, it should be a true Center. I wouldn’t be surprised if they took C Mike Pouncey, who seems to be the best available center when the Giants draft at the 19th overall spot in round one. But to say that OT is the area of most need in this years draft and worthy of the 1st pick is insane. Don’t believe the hype! (thanks Chuck)

It makes me angry when I read about the lack of respect for the current group of Giants offensive tackles. I think they have some good young talent at the position and have enough experienced players to do just fine in 2011. OT William Beatty and OT Adam Koets will be better this season. OT David Diehl and OT Kareem McKenzie are veteran players and OT Shawn Andrews can contribute in certain situations very well. They also have a couple of guys on the reserve squad that will get work. Yes, the team will need to use a high draft pick on an OT one year but not this year.

Clearly, the center position needs to be addressed. To be blunt, it is because all-world C Shaun O’Hara, whom I have tremendous respect for, is getting a bit older. They need to get a young true center into the system this year. I am still hoping the team can get C Stefen Wisniewski. Maybe use the 19th overall pick on a LB or DT then trade back up into the back end of round one or frontside of round two to grab Wisniewski. Could you imagine if the G-Men were able to draft LB Akeem Ayers and C Stefen Wisniewski by trading a 2nd and 6th round pick to move up for Wisniewski? That would be a very successful first two picks for Big Blue.

If you are one of the believers that think the team needs to draft an OT in round one, you’re going to have to leave a comment below and explain why it needs to be done in this years draft. I’m sick of all these cliquey Giants websites who think they know everything and are never open to debate. Gimme some elbow room. They want to generate website traffic at any cost. These are the same websites that feel the need to monopolize the market and suppress any new talent that seeks their advice or council. Let’s have a debate and see who can come the closet to correctly calling the draft by position this year. Of course if RB Mark Ingram is available at the 19th pick, all bets are off.

Here are my draft picks by position. We can call this the “Damien Draft 2011” from the Omen film because of the three 6th round picks they have. I don’t like that omen and hope they trade away a pick or two, so they can move up for better talent in the early rounds. Of course, any trades before the draft could change everything entirely. This also includes if the Giants trade picks to move up, this list is based on todays roster only.

New York Giants 2011 NFL Mock Draft by Position

Round 1 (19th pick) – DT or Center/OL

Round 2 (52nd pick) – LB

Round 3 (83rd pick) – CB

Round 4 (117th pick) – OL

Round 5 pick – traded away for RB Darius Reynaud

Round 6 (185th pick) – LB

Round 6 (198th pick) – TE

Round 6 (202nd pick) – RB

Round 7 (221st pick) – CB

New York Giants 2011 NFL Lockout Survival Kit

March 23, 2011

NEW YORK – There have been many New York Giants fans that contacted me about being upset with this lockout. Some find themselves wandering aimlessly around the house or driving around their neighborhoods with no place to go. Some have taken up alternative hobbies such as painting or cooking. It’s really sad. We are going to take a look at some of the things that Giants fans can do during this lockout to keep from going insane.

There should be something for everyone and if you feel something should be added to this list, we encourage you to leave a comment below with that information.

I understand that times are tough and some fans might not be able to afford some of the items listed below. That is why I included a couple of things that you can do that are free or cost very little. Since computers weren’t as prevalent during the last lockout as they are now, it has become much easier to survive the lockout in the digital age. The NFL is also changing game rules as we speak and some of the fans are not liking what they are hearing. Changes to the kick off rules have been the most public. Why? Why are they messing with the billion dollar system? I’m not going to go into all of this because it just upsets me but I thought I would share a little here. We will cover everything once all of this madness is over with. I hope we can provide you with a little rain water during this football drought.

I fully expect the NFL to run with my original idea here and make even more millions. Just remember where you heard about the “Lockout Survival Kit” first football fans. Now, let’s take a look at the list.

Whatever you decide to do fans, I would suggest one thing, don’t panic! Things cannot continue this way for very long and sooner or later everything will work out. So keep your heads up and stay strong through this horrible situation and try to remember better days in the NFL. Good luck!

New York Giants Field of Dreams at the Meadowlands

March 16, 2011

NEW YORK (nygreporter.com) – The New York Giants christened their brand new stadium this past season in 2010. It was a 10-6 year and they missed the playoffs in a year when an NFL team made it into the playoffs with a 7-9 record, no I’m not kidding. Makes you wonder. The new Giants stadium (which all Giants fans will call it forever) is a massive structure and outfitted with all of the newest technology. This stadium should stand strong for many decades and it looks like all of our dreams were dashed at the news that the Jets wanted to split the costs and continue to stay in the guest bedroom for the next few decades. That is the New York Giants house and always will be.

The story gets better. New Meadowlands stadium (official name) won the bid to host the 2014 Super Bowl. This will be the experiment of a lifetime to see how a cold weather Super Bowl performs against their warmer climate counterparts. It sounds like it is a long way off but the truth is that it’s 3 short years away from being a reality. I predict that the physical ticket sales to the game will be the highest price tickets (this includes the street value) in Super Bowl history and it will hold that record for quite some time. New York and New Jersey are going to go absolutely nuts once this event rolls around. The parties at the surrounding bars and hotels will be seen from space. Talk about field of dreams, can you imagine the city if the Giants are playing in that Super Bowl? What if they were playing the Jets? The thought of a subway series at the New Meadowlands stadium is a big idea and a big deal. It would be off the charts.

I know the topic of the new stadium has been discussed many times before but I have been hearing extra chatter from the Jets fans lately and wanted to be sure to mention how the Giants let them stay there for over 30 years. Giants fans are not talkative or obnoxious. They revel in the fact that the Mara and Tisch families have kept things classy and remain committed to the sport in general. We will include a message below to the fans from the owners that was posted on Giants.com over the weekend, after the 2011 NFL lockout began. Will the Giants get to play on that brand new field once again in 2011 or will the lockout ruin this season? I remain optimistic that they will work something out soon. What do you think?

Message to Giants fans from John Mara and Steve Tisch

We are as disappointed as you are in the developments of the past week and the current state of negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. For there to be no CBA in place today is extremely disappointing, given the amount of time and hard work and the numerous conversations devoted to achieving an agreement, not just in the last two weeks but over the last two years. We are not happy about that and we certainly understand and appreciate your unhappiness and frustration. Where we are today serves no positive purpose for you, for our players and for the National Football League. Although we had hoped and expected to have an agreement by now and are disappointed that we do not, we remain as committed as ever to returning this process where it belongs, which is the negotiating table. We are convinced that what we have stated many times remains true, that there will be a new agreement and there will be a 2011 NFL season. It is just a matter of when we are able to reach an accord on the current issues. The impatience and the displeasure we know you are feeling is completely understandable. We can only assure you that the point of the entire process is to make our game as strong as it can possibly be and to enable it to continue to grow for the good of everybody – the league, the players and the fans. The last thing we wanted is for the business end of our sport to play out this way. We know people frankly don’t care how owners and players manage their business. These negotiations distract and detract from what is most important to all of us: the game.

We are doing all we can to return the focus as quickly as possible to where it belongs, the field of play.
