NEW YORK – I envy the final two teams standing tall after a rough season. The Green Bay Packers will face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV and their fans must be having a blast! It doesn’t feel like it’s been four years since the Giants won Super Bowl XLII but it has been. The Packers beat the Bears to advance while the Steelers finally shut up the talkative Jets. All four of these teams deserve some respect for making it as far as they did during the 2010 NFL season. We must also congratulate the Packers and Steelers for getting to the big game and we wish them both luck.
The NFL Pro Bowl will be played next weekend in Hawaii, since NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, changed the game format to have the Pro Bowl played before the marquee Super Bowl. With the collective bargaining agreement looming in the wings, football fans may want to sit back and really enjoy these final two games of the season. Things could be a lot different come the beginning of the 2011 NFL season. I know it will be hard to watch the Pro Bowl with its lack of meaning but just try and enjoy it if you can.
I have to admit that I am gloating internally a bit because I picked the Green Bay Packers to win it all this year. They haven’t completed my prediction yet but they are in the Super Bowl and one win way from being the NFL Champions. I expect this Super Bowl to be a throw back of the classic days of football. Both of these teams match up very well and I truly expect it to be a battle. I’m not sure if it will be a shoot out or a defensive game yet. All signs point to a low scoring defensive battle but things could very easily go the other way with these two outstanding offenses. As I mentioned, I will be rooting for the Packers and the NFC to take the Lombardi trophy home.
The Super Bowl will be played on February 6, 2011 at 6:30 PM EST in Cowboys stadium.

NEW YORK – Hey there all you Giants’ fans! Long time no see! It feels great to be back writing for what I truly believe is the best underdog blog that covers the New York Football Giants! So anyways, jumping right into things I thought I might talk about what is to become of this roller coaster ride we are calling the 2010 campaign.
No, no, no not the politics (voting day two days ago fyi) politics are great if you have insomnia or enjoy headaches haha. Important stuff, just not my cup of tea.
The Giants have been at it for 8 weeks now, 7 games and a bye week. They’ve looked great, awful, okay, and spectacular. If we put their season marking all the high and low points on a graph we could probably out design any roller coaster genius at Six Flags! But in all seriousness folks they finally look like they have everything under control and we can only hope for a smooth ride back to the loading dock.
Perry Fewell seems to have really gotten things going and the defense has never looked better. They haven’t played this well since Super Bowl 42 and all signs seem to be positive. The recent addition of DE Alex Hall from waivers combined with a healthy Keith Bulluck should do nicely to cover the whole Kiwinikua leaves behind, and Jason Pierre-Paul should get a few more looks as well.
Tom Coughlin praised JPP this week for drawing consistent double teams on special teams coverage which is an encouraging sign of his progress. The Dez Bryant return was unfortunate, but they are starting to get things together. Even Matt Dodge has been able to dodge a few critics recently (sorry had to do it) and punted a few good ones in a row now.
It is truly amazing how when things go right everything really starts to mesh. Ahmad Bradshaw is tearing up the field and all of a sudden Brandon Jacobs has 5 touchdowns in the last 4 games. The running game has looked solid and Madison Hedgecock is close to being back from an injured hamstring.
There has been some discouraging news as of late, Shaun O’Hara, center, is out again with another foot injury. OL Adam Koets played nicely in his absence before and I’d expect the same if Shaun is to miss anytime now. Also, the Giants have about ten players on the injured reserved list at this point. The newest of which being Bruce Johnson who is done with a knee injury.
Now that we have seen how the Giants have played and how the rest of the league has played lets take a look at some new predictions for the season. I would just like to note that despite the one surprise loss to the Titans I made some pretty good predictions at the beginning of the seasons and well…Toot Toot! (that’s the sound of my own horn haha).
So quickly here are my updated picks: Win at Seattle, Roll over Dallas, Lose at Philly, Stuff MJD in at home, Take one on the chin from the Skins, Beat a badly coached Vikings team, Take back some pride against Philly round 2, upset the Packers in a game that has home field implication, and roll over the Redskins gaining playoff momentum.
Overall, I see Big Blue headed to 12-4 and a first or second seat in the playoffs! This is contingent upon a few things however, staying healthy is number one right now, a close second is getting special teams in order (I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, Tom Quinn has got to go), and Eli has got to cut down on the turnovers (I strongly believe that at least 6 are not his fault, but he needs to sit his guys down and talk out what to do to improve). If the Giants can maintain their current path then there are great things ahead for this group!

The New York Giants, looking to increase their first winning streak in a year, face the NFL’s punching bag of the last few seasons, the Detroit Lions (1-4), at home in the new Meadowlands Stadium. Easy matchup, one might think. That is where a mistake can be made. As I said, this is a trap game.
The Lions, although having only one win in the season, have more fight in them than meets the eye. Just looking at the games this season, out of the 4 losses, it is very easy to see that those games were not decided until the very end.
In the season opener against Chicago, a blown call nullified a Calvin Johnson touchdown that would most likely assure the win for Detroit.
Then you move on to analyze the Eagles game, and the story continues. The Lions scored a touchdown with 1:55 left, made the two-point conversion, putting the game at 35-32, then on the ensuing kickoff they recovered an onside kick. They were not able to capitalize on that, but again the game was decided on the final seconds.
Against Green Bay, a team that is supposed to be one of the finest in the NFC, once again Detroit was able to push the game until the fourth quarter, the final score being 28-26. These three games could have easily gone either way, and Detroit could be, say, a 3-2 team, just like our beloved Giants.
With that in mind, it is paramount to stay focused and duly prepare for this game. As it is said quite frequently in this organization, “every game is important“. The way the Giants have been playing is impressive and inspiring, however, paraphrasing Antrel Rolle, it is always better to win three in a row than two in a row.

NEW YORK – It is the eve before kickoff and all through the night NFL fans are stirring with anticipation and delight. If I was a better poet I would probably finish this…
Anyways, I’m up and restless thinking about the new season which kicks off Sunday. For those of you who know me, you know I get the schedule in March, review it, make a prediction, then put it away. Then, I pull the schedule out after preseason is over and repeat the process. So here is a game by game break down of what I came up with:
Week 1: vs. Carolina
The Panthers, as all Giants fans remember from last season, have an outstanding running game. The Giants have improved on the defensive line but the linebackers are still unproven and a big question mark. Ultimately, I do think the Giants pull it out in a close one. Eli Manning’s proficient and experienced offense beats out Matt Moore this Sunday.
Prediction: Giants 28-24
Week 2: @ Indianapolis
Manning Bowl 2.0 rolls in and its much of the same. The Giants are a very different team from when they last met but big brother Peyton still has his way with Big Blue. The Giants secondary looks strong with Rolle and Phillips (who is now ready for the season) but injuries to Ross and Webster worry me, when it comes to going up against Peyton’s proficient passing attack.
Prediction: Colts 35-21
Week 3: vs. Tennessee
Chris Johnson is another great running back coming to the Meadowlands this season. I think the Giants have improved enough this season that they will have a good answer for great runners. I don’t think Vince Young has enough receiving talent in his stable and Johnson can’t do it all on his own. In a good strong bounce back game, the G-Men win.
Prediction: Giants 21-10
Week 4: vs. Chicago
Lovie Smith is on the hot seat this year and I don’t think his team is going to help one bit. I don’t think the Bears have any answers this year, so as long as the Giants arrive serious and play strong they should have no problem here.
Prediction: Giants 17-7
Week 5: @ Houston
Big Blue hits the road for another AFC South battle. Again, I have questions about the health of the secondary but by this point in the season hopefully everyone is a-o-k. I think the Giants pull a small upset here as Bradshaw has his first really big day of the season gaining 12o yards or more.
Prediction: Giants 24-14
Week 6: vs. Detroit
I think Detroit is going to have a better season, Stafford is a year older and a year wiser. I don’t think they get past the Giants. As long as the Giants don’t walk in acting like they’ve already won, then they will win. Play the game and get the results you know you can.
Prediction: Giants 35-14
Week 7: @ Dallas
First NFC East game of the season, Giants embarrassed Dallas in their home opener last season, it won’t happen this season. Big Blue falters here, Dallas takes the win in a shoot out.
Prediction: Dallas 42-28
Week 8: BYE
Week 9: @ Seattle
Pete Carroll takes one step forward but releasing T.J. is two steps back. I have a lot of faith in the guy (and not just because he’s sitting on my fantasy bench!) I think cutting him was a mistake. Hasselbeck is left with an unproven, and maybe even untalented group to work with. Giants take this one easy.
Prediction: Giants 28-10
Week 10: vs. Dallas
The NFC East rivals meet again, and again the Cowboys prove to be too much for Big Blue (the Giants get them back in the playoffs though).
Prediction: Dallas 28-13
Week 11: @ Philadelphia
Big Blue rolls in to town looking for their first division win. New running back, new quarterback, same old beating. Giants get them good this time.
Prediction: Giants 14-10
Week 12: vs. Jacksonville
The Giants really play the leagues best running games this season, MJD runs into town and the Giants better be ready. Unfortunately, MJD is a one man team and can’t make up for a poor passing game and a bad D.
Prediction: Giants 28-14
Week 13: vs. Washington
The Giants know McNabb well, they know the Redskins too. I don’t see the Giants having much trouble here. Of course, it is an NFC East matchup, so anything can happen but for this articles sake, it won’t.
Prediction: Giants 24-14
Week 14: @ Minnesota
Whoever made this schedule really wanted to test the Giants run D. AP is ready and waiting to tear Big Blue apart and expose any holes there may be. Normally seeing Farve late in the year could be a good thing but in his own dome? I don’t think so.
Prediction: Minnesota 35-14
Week 15: vs. Philadelphia
It’s the end of the year, the Eagles have had some time to learn, grow, and gel. They don’t let this division showdown go…
Prediction: Philadelphia 28-21
Week 16: @ Green Bay
Aaron Rodgers puts up MVP like numbers and the game is away at Lambeau Field in winter. Giants continue their skid in this game.
Prediction: Green Bay 17-7
Week 17: @ Washington
Giants stumble into the playoffs after this final NFC East showdown where they regain some of their steam. Should be a good confidence booster.
Prediction: Giants 35-17
So the Giants go 11-5, grab a wild card spot behind Dallas. They only go 3-3 in the division which is a tough pill to swallow. The G-Men beat Dallas in the Divisional round of the playoffs but Green Bay beats them in the NFC Championship game. This season should be an obvious improvement for Big Blue. I think the D is significantly improved. The linebackers are probably the weakest part of the team as of now but by the bye week they will be playing well. The O-line has some concerns so look for Eli to be on his back a bit and neither Bradshaw or Jacobs to have a spectacular season.
Overall, the Giants get better. I think they are set up very well for the 2011 draft. Either Osi or Kiwi will leave next season but JPP is a suitable replacement. I think next years draft will have the G-Men taking a running back in the first round, draft O-line in the next 3 rounds, draft a return man, and maybe a punter in the last. Then, after a healthy camp, the Giants win the Super Bowl 512 days from now in Indianapolis.

Well hey there New York Giants fans and NYGReporter Supporters (has a nice ring to it huh?), no this article is not specifically Giants related, it effects the entire league. So, I am stepping outside my usual shell and reporting on a larger scale. Well, not so much reporting, more addressing. The difference? Reporting I might say “The NFL is considering changing the schedule from 16 to 18 games” (which it is), but in addressing that I am going to say “The NFL should change the schedule from 16 to 18 games”. See the difference?
While this almost seems like a thesis statement (do you like the scholarly new college goer wording?) it is not. However, I do strongly believe that in order for the National Football League to progress forward it is necessary to expand to 18 games. And here’s why:
- Preseason Games: There are too many of them! Everyone knows the 3rd one counts the most, but none of them actually count at all and considering 3 Giants have had head injuries in this preseason alone I think we can all do without two of them.
- Injuries: Everyone keeps saying it will create more, but did anyone stop to think it will create less? Well not exactly, but it may give guys enough time to get back, especially if the season still starts the same date it will allow two extra weeks of healing time. Just a thought.
- Competitiveness: If we push more division games toward the end of the season it will ensure competition. Plus, who knows maybe it will allow some bubble teams to make up ground.
- NFL Expansion: Everyone knows Goodell’s plan to bring the NFL world wide, the extra games could mean an extra bye week or even just more time to go more places.
- Competing with other Leagues: No, no other football league has a chance, but the MLB and NBA and NHL all have longer seasons and less offseason waiting around time. I know the waiting builds suspense but right around now I just don’t want to wait any longer for football and the thought that I could be watching games that matter is enticing.
So anyways, this is simply my opinion, I don’t claim to be an expert on the matter but from a fan’s perspective, I would like to see more hard hitting, meaningful football. ESPN reports that owners are “eagar” while the players “aren’t so sure”. There is a lot that goes into this change. Ultimately, I wish we would all focus on the collective bargaining agreement rather than the schedule. Schedule changes are aimed to take place in 2012, the bargaining agreement is due up this year. Prioritize league, prioritize.

This has been a day full of blasts from the past. Two former New York Giants decided to retire with the G-Men and have it go down in the record books that they are part of the family forever. They are Ike Hilliard and David Tyree. The fans hold both of these players in very high regard, especially WR David Tyree who helped the team win a Super Bowl. Ike Hilliard is a fan favorite because he was with the Giants for most of his career after playing at the University of Florida. Both WR’s David Tyree and Ike Hilliard, were drafted by the New York Giants. Hilliard in 1997 and Tyree in 2003.
I had the pleasure of seeing Hilliard play at the Swamp during the nineties (1996) at the University of Florida. Ike (5’11” 210 pounds) spent eight years with the Giants after they drafted him and then the next four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was a gifted wide receiver and a fan favorite, just as David Tyree was/is. Two former Giants WR’s coming back to the team, signing with the team, then retiring with the team. This is something that does not happen everyday in the world of football.
Ike played alongside Amani Toomer for a lot of years and I’m sure that Toomer would have nothing but good things to say about No.88 Hilliard. Ike took the heat off of Toomer on more then one occasion allowing Toomer to flourish. Toomer can hold his own in any situation and I do not want to sound like Toomer needed help. It was just a good fit to see them both on the field doing their thing.

Hello Giants Fans!
Things have been extremely quiet in the football world lately, not including the usual Brett Favre chatter of course. I took a little mini-break during this quiet time and figured I’d enjoy the peace while it lasts. We haven’t heard any New York Giants news in a week but I anticipate this week to heat up by Friday. The Giants first round pick, DE Jason Pierre-Paul, still hasn’t signed with the team and that is something that can happen at any moment. Their second round pick, Linval Joseph has yet to sign also. The team is now only 10 days away from the beginning of training camp in Albany, New York.
Kenny, Kenny, Kenny. What is going on with Giants star safety Kenny Phillips? This is a question that has been lingering, like a thorn in my mind. I cannot overemphasize how important having Kenny Phillips on the field would be for Big Blue. He is a game changer and a very good athlete. If the front office has been coy about his status and he returns full boar, then the Giants have quietly put together the best safety tandem in the NFL.
Time heals all wounds they say, so I’m anxious to see how pro bowl DE Osi Umenyiora performs in 2010. The front office has clearly made a statement by drafting rookie DE Jason Pierre-Paul. I’m not sure why Giants writers feel the need to include this fact when Osi’s name is brought up. I think I understand why. Osi if you’re reading this, tell me if it makes sense to you. Giants fans still have Osi ranked the number one DE in their minds. Not everyone feels this way but a good portion of them do. The writers and fans haven’t given DE Justin Tuck the reigns completely yet and still know what you’re capable of. Osi is young and has had ample time to recover from his injury a couple of years ago.
I’m extremely curious to learn what defense new DC Perry Fewell intends to use. I found it promising that he was experimenting during minicamp this year. Some have mentioned a tampa 2 defense and others have said he will switch to a 3-4 defense. I’m not sure about those drastic changes but I would anticipate those scenarios to all be a part of the arsenal Fewell intends to employ. This guy looks like he mixes it up and keeps opposing offenses guessing. I do however expect him to be more aggressive then former DC Sheridan was. You cannot blame a guy for attacking when his back is against the wall and I think if Sheridan had done that a few times, he might still have his job. Probably not but you never know.
What I’m about to tell you is extremely disturbing, parental discretion is advised. Former Giants safety CC “Can’t Cover” Brown has come out in the news and said that the New York media controls the New York Giants. Really CC? Why would you want to go there? We understand your fighting to put food on the table in Detroit but let’s be honest, you had a poor year in 2009. In fact, the entire team has a poor year and yes, you were a part of that team. The New York Giants are one of the classiest organizations in all of sports with a deep history and tradition. You owe the team, front office, owners and the coaches an apology. I could have taken a very mean angle on this topic but I want to give CC the benefit of the doubt, because a lot of what happened last season was not his fault.

This warm July night brings baseball fans the Major League Baseball all-star game. In fact, that game will be played tonight in Anaheim, California with a handful of Yankee players on the roster, including SS Derek Jeter. It seems fitting that Yankees owner George Steinbrenner would pass away on a date, that had historical meaning to the game of baseball. The Boss passed away this morning from a heart attack, he was 80 years old and had lived one of the fullest lives of any man on earth. Can you imagine waking up every morning and saying “I own the New York Yankees”. Can you imagine doing that since the seventies?
If you had to sum up George Steinbrenner in one word, it would have to be “Winner” because it was all he ever talked about. The Boss loved Championship rings and trophies more then anything else, other then his family of course and some might even question that.
I can’t stand to hear the haters saying, “The Yankees buy their championships” to which I always reply, “Excuse me but you do know that every single team owner is a billionaire right? You do understand that an owner who has made their money through selling toothbrushes or making condiments has a primary job? Every MLB team could do what the Yankees do financially but they don’t because they choose not to. The Yankees are in the business of the Yankees and not in the business of real estate conglomerates or dot com companies. The profits that the Yankees make go back into the Yankee system. The money other teams make could possibly go towards their primary non-baseball business. Steinbrenner was passionate about baseball and that’s a big difference, so get it right. He was also stubborn. Which is why he eventually told Cablevision to go to hell and created his own TV channel called “The YES Network” when he didn’t approve of how the Yankees were being handled. Let’s be honest, Steinbrenner got things done and who can hate a guy for doing his job well? The competition.
There will no doubt be a tribute to “The Boss” tonight at the all-star game and could there ultimately be a tribute song to “The Boss” by “The Boss”? Creative minds keep working through grief and sadness.
A spike was driven into the earth in 1925, creating a wide hole in order to place a pillar. The Mara family planted that pillar when they purchased the New York Giants for $500 dollars. Talk about pure “big blue” blood. For 85 years, the Mara family has been a light to the Tri-State area and the Giants have a reputation as one of the classiest organizations in sports. There are too many charities to list here and too many acts of kindness to mention. Some things go beyond sports and Wellington Mara was a larger then life man. “The Duke” passed away five years ago in October 2005, he was 89 years old God bless him and his legacy continues and has remained strong. The world needs more old school men like Mr. Mara is this era of being PC. With each passing year we can pick out one or two game changers or stand outs. In the football world, the Mara family is held in extremely high regard. Wellington “The Duke” Mara was born in New York and went to school in New York all the way through college. He was also enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
There is something to be said for family and fans will still be able to hold on to the familiar names of those who own the teams they cheer for. Both the Mara family and Steinbrenner family have blood running things. You have Hank and Hal in the Bronx and you have John and Tim in East Rutherford. Those are the more public names that people know of but trust me there are many more and why shouldn’t there be? Any one of us would be doing the same thing for family and friends if we were in that position. Nepotism sucks only for those outside of the circle right? The words nepotism and loyalty can become confused when applied to the same subject, such as who should be running these teams. Personally, I give both the Mara boys and Steinbrenner boys my full support. They own and operate the teams I have loved all of my life. Disagreements will happen but fans need to stand behind these men and give them a chance to show what they can do.
The passing of legendary announcer Bob Sheppard yesterday, who was the stadium announcer for both the Giants and Yankees for over 50 years, seems to add insult to injury. He takes with him the “voice of God” moniker that was bestowed upon him and a generations worth of loyalty and love from the fans. Even I cannot deny the chills I felt standing in a silent stadium, filled with tens of thousands of people listening to Sheppard speak. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
The reader must understand that none of the men mentioned in this article can ever be replaced within the New York community. They have become that which all else is compared to and will forever hold a special meaning in the lives of fans around the globe. They are the benchmark, to which everyone must refer, in order to learn how to do things the right way.

Former New York Giants MLB, Antonio Pierce, has officially retired from the NFL today. Pierce was the defensive general of Big Blue for a number of years. He has apparently joined the ESPN crew and will do an episode of NFL LIVE tonight on ESPN at 4:00 PM EST. Some Giants fans, fell out of love with AP during the end of his days with New York. I for one, have always liked and respected Pierce. I wish him nothing but the best in his future ventures. You can say what you want about AP but he is a Super Bowl Champion and pro bowl football player. Nothing can ever change those facts or make his ring shine less.
Antonio Pierce played nine years in the NFL and had his season end mid-stream last year due to a neck injury. I’m thankful that he joins Michael Strahan, as a pair of former Giants defensive players who will now be on TV. Most Giants fans are sick of hearing Troy Aikman or Moose Johnston call their Giants games, so this will at least alleviate some of the pain from the LIVE game calling.
AP will go down in Giants history as a tremendous leader on the field and true student of the game. He was a terrific team mate and someone the players could trust. Things start to break down when you get older and such is the case with Pierce in my opinion. The heart and mind are willing and able but the body just can’t take anymore. It’s a shame that we all have to get old someday but father time catches up to all of us sooner or later. Give a shout out to the Giants Nation when you’re on the tube tonight AP.

Hello Giants fans, let me ask you a question. What is wrong with WR David Tyree? Besides owning the greatest play in Super Bowl history, many might have forgotten that David Tyree was a pro bowl player at one time. Not only that but he went to the pro bowl based upon his special teams performance. The guy is not over the hill having just 7 NFL seasons under his belt and can be an electrifying game changer at the strangest moments (see SB XLII). He is 30 years old, 6’0″ 206 pounds and has won on the biggest stage in the world.
There must be something wrong with him physically for the team not to be grabbing him for a one or two year deal. There are no illusions here, he would serve as a backup WR and a special teams leader. I’m not sure if he can run as fast as he did in 2005, when he went to the pro bowl but he is certainly worth taking a look at. Invite him to training camp at the very least. The New Jersey native and former 6th round pick (2003) knows the local area and knows the G-Men very well.
I would like our readers to participate in this article and tell me what you think. Our previous article listed some possible free agent acquisitions. I find it difficult to believe that WR Chris Brown, offered Big Blue more then what David Tyree can offer. Give the man a chance to fail his own physical I say. He is a fan favorite and it shows that you gave him the respect of a physical and training camp invite. I would love to know once and for all what the main reason is for David Tyree not getting a shot at making the team. Could this be over something personal? Sure it can be but I doubt it. It has to be something regarding Tyree’s physical condition (most likely his knee).
We all know that he was hanging around the locker room earlier this year and it seemed like he had the itch to play. I know one thing for certain, if he were to come back to the Giants, the fans would welcome him with open arms.

NEW YORK – I envy the final two teams standing tall after a rough season. The Green Bay Packers will face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV and their fans must be having a blast! It doesn’t feel like it’s been four years since the Giants won Super Bowl XLII but it has been. The Packers beat the Bears to advance while the Steelers finally shut up the talkative Jets. All four of these teams deserve some respect for making it as far as they did during the 2010 NFL season. We must also congratulate the Packers and Steelers for getting to the big game and we wish them both luck.
