New York Giants Bye Week Survival Tips

NEW YORK – We here at nygreporter understand how difficult it can be for a true blue Giants fan to endure the dreaded bye week. It seems like it becomes much harder each year to sit out a weekend and root for whoever plays our rivals. So I thought we would give you some tips on how to make it through the worst week in the NFL season for Giants fans. Some of you may have read our article called New York Giants 2011 NFL Lockout Survival Kit and this article will be similar to that one. Try to stay sane and remember that it is only one week.

The first thing we will look at, is the opponents of our division rivals and who Giants fans will need to root for this weekend. The two teams that Big Blue fans need to root for this weekend are the Carolina Panthers and St. Louis Rams. The Panthers play the Redskins on Sunday at 1PM EST and the Rams face the Cowboys at 4:15 PM EST. We need both of these teams to lose so the Giants continue to lockdown the NFC East. The final team in the NFC East, the Philadelphia Eagles, are also on a bye week this weekend and probably “dreaming” about making the playoffs this year. Hopefully, QB Cam Newton will ball on Washington and knock them down a peg because believe it or not, the Redskins are a bigger threat to Big Blue this year.

I still say every Giants fan should own a copy of Super Bowl XLII on DVD for an occasion like this. Having copies of the glory days in 1986 and 1990 wouldn’t hurt either. Sitting down and watching those games is extremely uplifting and something that should be done once per year anyway. Check out the Giants shop for merchandise and gear. Buying a piece of Giants merchandise might make you feel better. You can also hit twitter and talk Giants football with other fans. This would be a perfect week (bye week) to hold an annual fan contest, don’t you think Giants? wink wink

Another possibility for this weekend is to get out of the house with your family or friends and take in some of this fall weather before it gets too cold. Once the boys get back on the field, it is unlikely that die hard fans will miss a single game. So take advantage of the break and go have some fun. Take your kids to the park or out for lunch. Take your girl to the mall. Take your man out to shoot some pool or go bowling. The most important thing is to enjoy yourself and figure out what suits you the best. Hey ESPN, You Have Lost All Credibility in New York!

NEW YORK – I have reached my limit with ESPN. For the first three weeks of the 2011 season, their coverage of the New York Giants has been nothing less then insulting. It has been bias and extremely negative. They have lost all credibility in New York for delivering a balanced and fair assessment of professional football games. It amazes me that they could be so blatantly one sided when it comes to the Giants. From morning to night it has been nothing but negativity and many speculate it is because the producers are from Boston or they are simply Boston fans. If this were a playground and we were five years old that would make sense but as a grown man or woman, with a job that entails delivering accurate news, it simply falls short of credible. ESPN, which is owned by the Walt Disney corporation (80%) and the Hearst corporation (20%) need to look into what these producers are airing. This article would have never been posted if it was a one time issue but this has been going on for years now. Dozens of New York fans took to twitter these past few weeks spitting poison at ESPN for their bias, so I am not alone in my thoughts which are written here.

I’m not talking about a single negative comment or remark here (even though you can find plenty of those too). I’m talking about whole segments produced and edited in a way that makes the Giants look terrible and I’m sick of it. You have to understand that there is a difference between a commentator giving his or her opinion during a broadcast and edited segments that have the elevator music and dramatic camera angles to provoke emotion from the viewer. These guys at ESPN had aired three negative segments prior to the Giants vs. Eagles game on Sunday. This was after a week long campaign of negativity calling out Big Blue for faking injuries and currently we have to endure “day three” of them talking about poor Michael Vick being hit legally. You would have gotten away with it if some producer over at ESPN wasn’t such a glutton and turned their focus to something else but after three weeks, enough is enough.

The three segments included their homemade montage of the “Miracle at the Meadowlands” where DeSean Jackson ran back a punt for a TD last year. This was played all day and all night. The second was an interview with former Giants punter Matt Dodge that was edited to make him look like an idiot and the third was all about faking injuries during games and had the Giants as the poster child for such behavior, due to questionable injuries by the Giants during the Rams game two Sundays ago. Guys faking injuries to slow the game down has been happening since the Vince Lombardi days and happens every week in the NFL. Yet, they failed to focus on the real story which is the Giants victories. They certainly spent enough time bashing them during week one when the G-men lost to the Redskins.

Ironically enough, they seem to have the same loathing for the New York Yankees and continually share a one sided opinion about the team. I know they could have their people pull up a bunch of clips over time that show positive statements about New York teams but overall the scales are considerably tipped in favor of the negative aspects they choose to air. I encourage all of the aspiring sports reporters in New York to focus on this story and see why this is allowed to occur. I ask that anyone with s nose for the news break this story wide open and find the source of all the negativity directed at New York. I implore any millionaires out there to create a new sports television program that can deliver fair and balanced news and compete with the monopoly that ESPN has become. These guys at ESPN must think the fans are stupid and that we wouldn’t recognize what they are doing. Talk about the real news, which in this case, are the two victories the Giants pulled out with half of their team injured, instead of what you CREATE as the news in order to generate viewership.

In conclusion, I ask who ever is in charge at ESPN, a publicly traded company that produces one billion dollars in revenue on the eyes and ears of sports fans, to explain why this is happening? If you want to pump my head with hours and hours of commercials by your advertisers without my permission, then I demand that you fairly and accurately report the news on New York area teams. You have neglected the New York Giants fans long enough and it is time for a change. Everything in this story is strictly my opinion but I am certainly not alone in my observations.

Giants Need to Break Out the Ugly Stick Against Rams

NEW YORK – It doesn’t matter how the Giants win tonight against the Rams, they just have to win. All that matters is that they avoid the dreaded 0-2 start and build some confidence going into their second divisional battle next Sunday against the Eagles. I’m not advocating any dirty play by Big Blue mind you, I am simply saying they need to man handle those guys and take the victory. I have already said that I believe the team needs to win every game from here on out leading up to the bye week (week seven). If the Giants lose tonight, things are going to get very interesting in New York.

The Giants are still dealing with a ton of injuries and will need the younger players to step up. This is your wake up call, you are an NFL player now and the team needs you. I believe the team has enough talent to win this game but there a few factors that need to come together. First, the special teams group needs to play better. They need to play like their jobs are on the line because they should be at this point. Second, the offensive play calling needs to be more aggressive and less predictable. Third, QB Eli Manning needs to get out of the funk he has been in since the preseason and get back to the player we all know he can be. I’m beginning to wonder if he is getting enough rest at home after having his first child. He seems sluggish and unfocused at times out there. If the three factors I’ve mentioned here can come together, I think the Giants will win the game tonight and get back on the right track for the season.

I recommend that all Giants fans watch this game tonight. I’m sure I do not need to tell the “true blue” fans that but there is an extra incentive for fans to check it out. The Giants will be honoring the 25th anniversary of the 1986 New York Giants Championship team that won Super Bowl XXI. That 86′ team is widely considered one of the best NFL teams ever. It is without question a top three all-time team and some may argue they are number one overall. The Giants will have a special halftime ceremony to honor the players and fans can even grab an autograph if they attend the game. Former Giants players will be located at all four entrances and available for autographs from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST. Be prepared for long lines and additional security measures.

The game itself starts at 8:30 PM EST and the weather is expected to be clear and around 60 degrees. If you have kids, you might want to bring a jacket for them (and yourself) if you plan on attending the game. My final score prediction is Giants 27 – Rams 21.

NFL Week 1: Giants vs. Redskins, Game Notes

NEW YORK – The 2011 NFL season has officially started Giants fans. I’m sure that most of you watched the Giants play the Redskins in DC today. Some football fans scrambled this morning to make sure their fantasy football teams had the proper lineups set and that there were no last minute injury updates. Some football fans broke out their lucky jerseys or made their favorite food before the games. All football fans honored the fallen of 9/11 in some way today, even if it were a small prayer or by attending a ceremony. America remembered the military and the fallen today. Never forget!

The Giants lost 28-14 to the Redskins in a game that was hard to watch at times. There were so many sloppy plays, after a very promising start, that I do not know where to begin. The best thing for Giants fans to do is just put this game behind us and look forward to next week when they play the Rams. Yes, it was that bad against a Redskins team that 99% of the experts said would lose today. The Giants start the season 0-1 and they have not even started the hard part of their schedule yet. After wins by the Eagles and Redskins, the G-men are officially in last place until we see what happens with the Cowboys game. The first half of the game saw a lot of back and forth action and it seemed pretty competitive, albeit sloppy. Big Blue went into the locker room at halftime tied up 14-14 and seemed to be building momentum.

Then the second half started and it all went down hill from there. One thing after another went wrong. The Giants were completely shut out in the second half and seemed to be playing tired football. I saw a lot of guys who appeared to be playing in slow motion. The Giants special teams are absolutely atrocious and need serious changes immediately. I have said that they might be the worst special teams in the entire NFL and I stand by that comment until they play better. The biggest surprise of the day was Redskins QB Rex Grossman balling on Big Blue for 305 yards and 2 TD’s. Nobody could have seen that coming. Giants QB Eli Manning had a rough day and was sacked 4 times with 1 INT. Manning has not seemed himself at all this year in the preseason or the regular season game tonight. I’m not sure what is bothering him but I hope he can focus on football and get back to the QB we all know he can be. The Giants also had way too many penalties in this game, finishing with 8 total.

Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.

QB Eli Manning – Eli did not have a very good game and finished 18/32 with 268 yards 0 TD’s and 1 INT. However, he did score on a 2 yard rushing TD.

RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw had a decent game and ran hard as usual. He finished with 44 yards and 1 TD.

WR Hakeem Nicks – Nicks had a great game and he gets my offensive game ball. He finished with 122 yards 0 TD’s.

DE Justin Tuck – Tuck was on the sidelines and missed the game while he is recovering from an injury. Get well soon Justin!

CB Aaron Ross – Ross had a pretty good game but doesn’t look 100% comfortable back there yet.

S Kenny Phillips – KP had a really nice game and was all over the field. He is going to have a solid year.

RB Brandon Jacobs – Jacobs ran hard but finished with only 29 yards. I expect a big year from the Bull this year.

LB Mathias Kiwanuka – Kiwi had a good game and finished 5th on the defense in tackles.

S Antrel Rolle – Rolle led the defense in tackles and had some very hard hits in the game.

DE Jason Pierre-Paul – JPP gets my defensive game ball for his outstanding game. He finished with 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble.

LB Michael Boley – Boley had a good game and finished with a fumble recovery.

WR Mario Manningham – Super Mario had some big catches and finished the game with 49 yards 0 TD’s.

TE Jake Ballard – Ballard had a nice game despite getting banged up before halftime. He finished with 59 yards.

CB Corey Webster – Webster had a relatively quiet night but did his job.

LB Greg Jones – Jones had a pretty good night for a rookie being thrown into the fire. I like this kid.

WR Domenik Hixon – Hixon was a busy man tonight returning punts and seeing some time at WR.

K Lawrence Tynes – Tynes was 0-1 on FG’s due to a blocked FG attempt and made both of his two extra point attempts.

P Steve Weatherford – The “Weatherman” had a nice game I thought and fans must feel better with a veteran back there.

Giants Defense – The Giants D gave up 28 points to an inferior Redskins team but still finished with 4 sacks, 0 INT’s and 1 forced fumble.

Giants Offense – The Giants offense has some work to do and it starts with the play calling.

Giants Special Teams – Simply the worst special teams I can ever remember for the New York Giants.

Coach Coughlin – Coach Coughlin and his staff are making do with a depleted team and a young roster. There will be growing pains for certain.

Giants Open Season Tomorrow on Infamous Date in U.S. History

NEW YORK – The Giants 2011 NFL season will finally open tomorrow. Fans, including myself, have been waiting all year for this day to arrive and I’m very excited. The NFL carefully planned this opening schedule because of the date in which it falls on. September 11, 2001 is the most infamous date in United States history since the December 7, 1941 date, when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The NFL has scheduled a game between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, representing two of the cities that were attacked a decade ago on the same infamous date. They also scheduled the New York Jets to play Americas team, better known as the Dallas Cowboys (and called much worse by Giants fans) at MetLife stadium in East Rutherford.

I can still very clearly remember the Giants playing the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football on September 10, 2001. They lost a close game 31-20 that night and when I woke up the next morning, my entire life changed forever. I watched the towers get hit by those planes, like so many other Americans and also knew someone who died in the attacks. He was a Port Authority cop and died running into the buildings to save lives. His story is so courageous that Hollywood made him one of the main characters in the film World Trade Center. His memory is kept alive by those of us in the community that tell people his story each and every year and through the fund raisers given in his name to help kids. You might know someone too who passed away during the attacks ten years ago, I hope you keep their memory alive as well. Former Giants player George Martin has done a ton of work to support the 9/11 first responders and I have promoted his cause since day one. The preseason games and training camps are over. The time has come to put up or shut up. The Giants have a very talented football team and I truly believe they can compete with any team in the NFL. I think they will beat the Redskins tomorrow by the score of 21-17 in a close game. Washington will be fired up from playing in DC on such an emotional day and I expect them to give it their best. These games against division rivals are always the most fun to me because the teams play with a little extra spunk when doing battle. I will be keeping a close eye on the defense and watching how they react to the recent surge in injuries that have decimated their squad. Get ready Giants fans, the season is about to begin!

NFL Season Kicks Off Tonight, Giants Still Plugging Holes

NEW YORK – The 2011 NFL season has finally arrived after one of the worst off seasons I can ever remember. The two big downers were the lockout, which lasted about five months and more recently the injuries that have plagued the Giants before the season even started. The lockout was a drain on everyone associated with the NFL, including the fans who had to endure the constant threat of this season being cancelled. A lot of people were hurt financially, while the big boys argued over billions of dollars. Thankfully, with no time left to spare, both sides came to an agreement and here we are now, just hours away from the 2011 kickoff (Packers vs. Saints at 8:30 PM EST). The rest of the league will have their games played this Sunday.

The Giants mass injury epidemic is the other significant event that has occurred over the past month or so. With the recent news about the G-men losing LB Jonathan Goff for the year, it really starts to hit home when you realize that a good chunk of our defense are 2nd string players and rookies. I have a lot of faith in our players and they know they need to step up but the time for talk is over and they must perform on the field. The Giants brought in a bunch of players for workouts over the past 48 hours to try and plug some holes, including familiar faces with LB Chase Blackburn and LB Kawika Mitchell. Rookie LB Greg Jones will be practicing with the first team and will most likely get the chance to start against the Redskins this weekend. The Giants have lost 8 players (about 15% of the team) due to season ending injuries, two of them got cut and six landed on the IR list, they also have two players currently on the PUP list.

What does all of this mean? It means that fans should just sit back and watch the game on Sunday. I’m completely drained from all of the theories and analysis. When it gets this close to the first game, I tend to relax more because there is really nothing more you can do but play the game. There will be plenty of time to breakdown the Giants performance and speculate on the rest of their 2011 opponents but for now, enjoy the game. We know the situation the team faces with a lack of personnel and we will see how they adapt to that. It will be impossible to separate the significance of the date this Sunday (9/11/11) on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the start of the NFL season for most teams. There will be tributes everywhere you look, as there should be and I’m sure that George Martin will be out there walking for the 9/11 first responders. There will be a lot of emotion this weekend and a ton to digest. Never Forget! The Giants vs. Redskins game kicks off at 4:15 PM EST on Sunday.

Happy Labor Day to our Readers and Giants Fans

September 5, 2011

NEW YORK – I would like to wish all of our readers and Giants fans everywhere a very Happy Labor Day. I know that these are very tough times we are living in and many of you might be out of work. I have experienced that myself during the past two years of an absolutely horrible economy. The only thing I can say is keep your head up and stay strong because it is not easy when you’re going through it. These tough times cannot last forever. I hope that you all have a very nice day with your family or friends and get out of the house for a little while. Maybe attend a BBQ to commemorate the end of summer, take the kids to the park or just have a few drinks with buddies. Whatever it is that you decide to do, I hope you enjoy yourself.

Some of the people who we know will be working hard are the players, coaches and staff of the New York Giants. They have a ton of work to do in a very short amount of time. The regular season begins in six days (9/11/11 at 4:15 PM EST) when they face the Washington Redskins in DC. Everything is pretty much in place for them to get started, including cutting down to the 53 man Roster and finally deciding on a tentative depth chart. The MetLife stadium (Giants stadium aka New Meadowlands stadium) will be rocking very soon Giants fans and some of you will be the ones doing the rocking. I hope everyone remembers that kids attend these games, so let’s try to keep it classy and drink responsibly (Giants fans don’t need this advice really, it’s the Jets fans we should be concerned with).

Hurricane Irene Postpones Giants vs. Jets Game…Again!

NEW YORK – The storm of the century in the northeast has finally effected NFL football. After the Giants vs. Jets game was re-scheduled to start five hours earlier today at 2:00 PM from 7:00 PM, the game has now been postponed until Monday night at 7:00 PM EST. Hurricane Irene is a monster, there is no question about that. Anyone who saw the satellite images from NASA knows we are dealing with a very angry mother nature. The rain has already started to fall in the New York area and people all across the east coast have been advised to evacuate, some of the towns have even ordered mandatory evacuations. Head Coach Tom Coughlin expressed concern about the storm for the Giants staff, coaches and players yesterday at a ceremony in Bryant Park commemorating the renaming of Giants stadium to the MetLife stadium.

I think both teams have made a very wise decision to postpone the game. I’m not sure how many of our readers have ever experienced a hurricane and the after effects but I can assure you that it is very unpleasant situation to find yourself in. Try to imagine not having electricity, running water or gas for a week. I survived a hurricane down in South Florida in 2005 called Hurricane Wilma and although it wasn’t as devastating as Hurricane Katrina, it was bad enough that they retired the name. I have seen things you would not believe in the aftermath. Imagine there being no running water, no air conditioning, no microwave, no refrigeration, no gas stations, no stove, no house lights, no shower, no computer, no video games, no TV, no phones, no street lights and no toilet bowl. These are just some of the things I remember but there are more. How would you make a cup of coffee? How would you cook food? How would you stay clean? How would you see at night? These are all things you have to prepare for and think about. It is better to have supplies and not need them, then to need them and not have them.

We can only hope that Hurricane Irene calms down and slows down before arriving in the New York area. I also pray for any of the other towns along the coast that it has already effected. Fans must also consider the fact that the Giants vs. Jets game could be cancelled for good at some point. If the hurricane does hit full force, the probability of the game being played anytime soon goes to zero. The storm is expected to hit us sometime tomorrow afternoon. I urge all of my readers to prepare now with the last few hours you have before this storm hits. There is no shame in preparing for the worst and looking out for your family or friends. Keep the kids calm and prepare to entertain them in the stone age with books and crayons because all of the electricity could be gone. Also be sure to check your local town government website right now, for tips on what you should do if things get bad. Be prepared, be safe and God bless!

Giants Lose Half of their Starting Offense in 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants might have to change their name to the New Look Giants this season. The team has been hit with a string of bad news (karma is a female dog) in recent weeks and the team has lost half of their starting offense. The news about WR Steve Smith going to the rival Eagles yesterday sealed the deal for me. I have been a very big fan of GM Jerry Reese and have showered him with praise since the first year he came to the team. But even my faith has been shaken by the mass exodus of pro bowl athletes in 2011. Think about this for a moment, the Giants have lost OL Rich Seubert, OL Shaun O’Hara, TE Kevin Boss, FB Madison Hedgecock and WR Steve Smith. All five of these guys were starters in an offense that requires eleven men. You do the math.

The Giants also lost some other quality guys such as OL Shawn “Fan Fav” Andrews, DT Barry Cofield (who also went to division rival, the Redskins). They are in a contract battle with all pro DE Osi Umenyiora, they lost CB Bruce Johnson to injury and cut him. They signed TE Ben Patrick who turned around and retired on them and they have lost their 1st round pick CB Prince Amukamara for two months. When it rains, it pours. There were other transactions made but these mentioned are the big deals and the team still hasn’t addressed all of the free agents that need signing. The Giants play their first preseason game in two days and will need to get a ton of new players up to speed on the playbook and the system. I’m not sure how they will fair but I wish them good luck with that.

I cannot remember a year in recent memory where the Giants lost so many quality players within a one month period of time. I’m not sure if there ever was a similar situation in team history. Yes, the team has signed some players but they hardly replaced all of the talent the team lost. I hope Jerry Reese knows what he is doing because this will be an unrecognizable group of players on the field to the true blue fan. The fact that the team was six million dollars over the salary cap certainly plays into the mix but that also begs the question of why? Who was watching the salary cap and allowed this to happen? Rabid fans have been calling for the head of Jerry Reese and for changes in the front office as a whole. I will keep my opinions to myself until I see what the team does in 2011. I will not panic but I am certainly deeply concerned.

Giants Offensive Line is the Elephant in the Room

NEW YORK – The New York Giants have been outstanding at the offensive line position for many years now. These guys have done such a good job protecting QB Eli Manning, that they have become almost an after thought. Fans could always rely on those guys to do their job and NFL fans acknowledged their superiority by voting the big guys into multiple Pro Bowls. We now find ourselves in an interesting predicament and completely unfamiliar territory with having to be concerned about the offensive line. Yes, the offensive line is the elephant in the room that nobody has talked about at length. If Eli Manning is going to continue his Iron Man streak for the most consecutive regular season starts, the offensive line is going to need a seamless transition into the new season.

One of the biggest player moves that really made me nervous was the acquisition of QB David Carr. I mentioned this is a previous article but I would like to explain to you why I am nervous. Eli Manning hasn’t really needed a true backup QB so far because he has proven to be extremely durable. A quiet tough guy if you will. With all due respect, Jim Sorgi and Sage Rosenfels aren’t exactly they guys you want running your team for any long period of time. Are the Giants concerned about Manning’s safety with this new offensive line? Do they lack confidence in the new group who will be taking over for Rich Seubert, Shawn Andrews and Shaun O’Hara? Are they concerned with the depth at that position if one or two guys fall to injury? Or did GM Jerry Reese just see an opportunity to sign a quality player familiar with the system?

The starters most likely will be William Beatty, David Diehl, David Baas, Chris Snee and Kareem McKenzie. The others include Mitch Petrus, Adam Koets, Kevin Boothe, rookie James Brewer and newly signed Chris White who appear to be the primary backups. There are a handful of other players on the team who will be competing for a role on the offensive line but the players I just mentioned appear to be the front runners. This is going to be the year that certain players will have to step up. I know that is an overused term but it is quite literally what will need to happen in 2011 for the Giants to stay competitive. Some have speculated that Seubert, Andrews or O’Hara could return and play for a smaller contract. With the Giants issues with the salary cap, it is a possibility but unlikely at this point.

In summary, I am very concerned about the offensive line this year. I have faith in the players talent but the lack of experience concerns me. I am also wondering how long it will take QB Eli Manning to become familiar with a new center in David Bass. If those two guys can’t get on the same page quickly, the team is going to be in trouble. If not for the salary cap issues, I would like to see the team bring in another veteran to help out this very young offensive line. Even if it were just to add depth, I would feel much better.
