Mike Garafolo Gives nygreporter a Shout Out on NJ.com

December 9, 2010

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans and our nygreporter readers. I have a short story to tell you about something that happened to me on Sunday. If I happen to be home watching the football games on Sunday, I like to go on twitter and talk to my fellow Giants fans and writers about the upcoming game. It has become a fun little thing to do on game days. This past Sunday, Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger (big New Jersey newspaper) asked all the Giants fans on twitter to predict the final score of the game against the Redskins. Just something to add a little spice to the day, so I decided to give him my pick which was 31-10. As you all know the final score was 31-7 in a game where the Giants played like they were in the Super Bowl. To make a short story shorter, I had the closest prediction and I won the contest.

So Mike sends me a message asking me to email him, which I do. He then offers to give a shout-out on my behalf, during his video series this week for winning the prediction of the final score. Well, Mr. Garafolo kept his word and you can find the short 6 minute video below, which he ends with a shout-out from us here at the nygreporter. Thanks Mike for keeping your word and making me laugh my butt off when I watched the video and thanks to the Star-Ledger, a great paper for local Jersey news. I’m looking forward to winning the contest again this weekend, when the Giants take on the Vikings in Minnesota. What do I win for back to back winning weeks? Stay tuned and find out next week Giants fans. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!!

My final score prediction for this Sunday is a 28-20 Giants victory against the Vikings. Check out the video below!

Championship Momentum

Championship Momentum

By Andrew D. Griffin

The Giants have developed a Championship momentum.  We have had several quality wins.  We have made adjustments that were necessary to make. We have run the ball effectively.  We have simplified the offense to Players coming off the street.  The approach has been a professional one nonetheless.  Players are coming out with a vendetta with a swagger with something to prove.

Derek Hagan and Devin Thomas have made Jerry Reese look like possibly the Executive of the Year.  Reese and his team have been very reliable and responsible. The response by the players has been exceptional.  Reminded the Giants fans, with me included, that the Front Office knows what they are doing.  Coach Pat Flaherty has also reminded us that coaching is more important than millions paid.

Players aren’t soldiers. However, competitive professional athletes perform and prepare like they are preparing for Combat.  Big Blue plays like its war on the field.  So many Giants deserve Purple Heart mention.  Playing while they are hurt and giving it all that they can on the field.  Purple Heart players strive to improve in the medical room to get back on the field.  The medical staff monitors their healing, the players self-medicate with taking mental reps and attending meetings.

We will face the Vikings this coming Sunday Afternoon.  We need this game and we need to sustain our momentum.  We should get a few pieces to our Combat Performance Team on the field.  Hopefully Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith will grace us with their presence once again on the field.  Hopefully David Diehl will return to bulk up the offensive line and provide depth.  They seem eager to get back which is a plus. A New York Giants game can never come soon enough in the week.  Let’s Go Big Blue! Another game! Another victim!

New York Giants Unconquerable Goliaths

December 8, 2010

Where should I begin? Should I begin with the Offense, Defense, or Special Teams? We have injuries. Yes! But we also have an abundance of talent left on our roster as well as a great coaching staff. I have developed a newborn perspective after reviewing the Big Blue roster and analyzing the timetable for the return of injured players.

A new concept caught my eye. It was keen in fact, just as much my formulated insight. Devin Thomas stood out. Still young and a talent the Giants scouted very highly. He has had some bumps in the road. Some even questioned his dedication, preparation, and professionalism. The Giants have an esteemed reputation for great coaching and positive motivation. I strongly believe this is a great fit for a player like Devin Thomas. I believe with the addition of Clayton and Thomas, the WR Corps can be dangerous. Dangerous because their march is unseen. This move maybe a blessing in disguise. It gives them positive reps with the JetBlue Big 2 out with injuries.

Boss and Beckum are still under the radar. Boss has solidified himself as a down the field threat. However, the game plan doesn’t always utilize is potential for production. The key for the Giants coaching staff is UTILIZATION. I can foresee in the next coming weeks the Giants giving opposing defenses fits with an empty backfield. Think about it. Imagine Having Manningham, Nicks, Smith, Clayton, and Thomas lined up in a 5 WR set. The word to me that comes to mind is Indomitable.

The backfield should yield defenses. DJ Ware couldn’t have arrived at a better time. I would quit using him as Punt/Kick returner. It will give him more playing time and also allow him to adjust to the game speed of the NFL. Also it would allow Jacobs to continue being the Battering Ram that he is. As long as he maintains a North/South mentality instead of East/West. Bradshaw will always be a Cheetah with power seduced with endurance. Keep in mind; both these backs also have the ability to line up in the slot.

The Chemistry of our defensive line will only get better. They are starting to gel while embracing the schemes of Coach Fewell. I strongly believe they can get stronger and better with 4 games left to play. We all know that’s plenty of football. JPP will continue to progress as long as big brothers Tuck and Osi continue to mentor him as he gains confidence. The only concern I have which seems to be traditional for the Giants is the play of our secondary. Poor tackling and mental mistakes will keep us from making a trip to Dallas in early February 2011. Accountability on third and longs can be a short term cure for what has been a long term problem.

Special teams would be a dream if we can stop putting opposing offenses in good field position. Down field tackling definitely needs work. P Matt Dodge is more of a mystery than the Big Bang Theory. He is young and has shown flashed of being able to get the job done. However, inconsistency will keep any player unemployed in the NFL regardless of talent. We cure our tackling and punting issues and the Giants, in my eyes, can be Super Bowl winners not Contenders. Let’s get it Big Blue!

The New York Giants to Invade Minnesota Sunday

December 8, 2010

NEW YORK – The Giants have had an up and down month. They lost two games they should have won to division rivals Dallas and Philadelphia, then turned things around and won their last two games against the Jaguars and Redskins. It is hard to measure how good New York is at this point in the season but if last week was any measurement, they are ready for the playoffs right now. Playoffs? We’re talking about playoffs? I sure am. The Giants are 8-4 and tied for first place (with the Eagles) in the NFC East with week 14 approaching. If there was ever a good time to start talking about the playoffs, it would be this week.

I fully expect the Giants to invade Minnesota on Sunday and come out with the win. I have said repeatedly that the G-Men will need to win half of their remaining four games in order to have a good shot at making it back to the post season with a 10-6 record. This is a very realistic possibility considering the remaining four games which are the Vikings, Eagles, Packers and Redskins. The obvious two games the Giants should win out of these four are the Vikings and Redskins. But I fully expect them to give the Eagles another tough game after losing to them a couple of weeks ago. The Packers are the toughest team out of the the four and they were my pick to make the Super Bowl prior to the 2010 NFL Season. They have been on a roll as of late and should be a very tough opponent.

But one thing at a time here. Big Blue will need to focus on beating the Vikings this weekend, the Vikes are having a rough season and seem hungry to finish their season strong. They still have Adrian Peterson, a banged up Brett Favre and a fully rested Sydney Rice, who had a monster game last week. Their defense is respectable and they will be playing at home. The Giants are still missing key offensive players, who could return within the next week or two and should help their playoff run. Let’s not forget, the numbers don’t lie. The Giants have the No.2 overall defense in the NFL and the No.4 overall offense. You don’t get that type of balance as a team unless you have a deep team and well coached players. The Giants achilles heel so far this season has been their special teams corps. If the special teams can catch up with the offense and defense, then this would be a Super Bowl contender no doubt.

The Giants game plan for the remainder of the season is simple. Play smart football and stop turning the ball over, keep the penalties to a minimum, keep the play calling aggressive on both sides of the ball and simply stay healthy and have fun. If the Giants can do these things, they will absolutely find themselves beating the Vikings on Sunday and making it back to the playoffs. I predict a Giants victory over the Vikings by the score of 28-20.

Giants vs. Redskins, NFL Week 13: Game Notes

December 5, 2010

NEW YORK – The New York Giants faced their old division rival Donovan McNabb and the Washington Redskins on Sunday afternoon. The Redskins came into the game with the worst defense in the entire NFL (ranked 32nd overall) and the G-Men had won four in a row against them. New York entered the game ranked with the No.2 overall defense in the NFL. The G-Men also had the No.3 overall offense in the NFL. This game should have been a stepping stone game to get the Giants through week 13 and focused on some better talent down the road. In other words, they needed to beat a team they were expected to beat. The Giants answered the call and got the victory, beating Washington 31-7.

The Giants played an awesome first half of football and dominated the Redskins on both sides of the ball. The Giants went into the locker room at halftime with a 21-0 lead. The Big Blue rushing attack was particularly impressive in this game and seemed to be the number one offensive option for the majority of the contest. It is possible that the windy conditions in New Meadowlands stadium had something to do with OC Kevin Gilbride’s strategy and the wind even helped Big Blue with pushing a FG attempt by Washington wide left. The team finished the game strong in the second half and continued to do whatever they wanted on the field. This was an extremely fun game to watch and the Giants players had smiles on their faces from the first quarter until the end of the game.

The Giants will play the Vikings next Sunday in Minnesota at 1PM EST. The Vikings have had a poor season by their recent standards but should still be considered a dangerous team filled with star players. Big Blue have four games left and will need to win half of them to make the playoffs in my opinion. It looks like the Giants and Eagles (both 8-4) will be the final two teams battling it out for the NFC East Champions title.

Let’s take a look at some of my notes from this afternoons game.

– QB Eli Manning didn’t do much on this windy day but hand the ball off. He finished with 161 yards 0 TD’s 1 INT.

– RB Ahmad Bradshaw ran hard the whole entire game and finished with 97 yards and 2 TD’s. He also topped 1,000 yards for the year.

– DE Justin Tuck had a very nice game and finished with 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles.

– WR Mario Manningham was mostly non existent the entire game and finished with 36 yards.

– RB Brandon Jacobs had a great game as the starting RB and finished with 103 yards and 2 TD’s.

– DE Jason Pierre-Paul had another solid performance with limited playing time. He finished with 2 sacks again for the second straight week.

– TE Kevin Boss got a few passes thrown his way and finished with 28 yards.

– DT Barry Cofield led all defensive tacklers with 7 and had another solid game for the G-Men.

– DE Osi Umenyiora had a nice game and finished with 1 sack and 1 forced fumble.

– WR Derek Hagan had a surprisingly busy day and finished with 65 yards.

– The Giants defense continued their stellar season with an awesome game and finished with 4 sacks, 2 INT’s, 6 forced fumbles and 4 fumble recoveries.

– The Giants offensive line set a franchise record for consecutive games (five) without giving up a sack.

– The Giants special teams even got into the action today with a good game. They blocked a punt and had some good kicks and punts.

– K Lawrence Tynes made his only FG attempt and all 4 of his extra point attempts.

New York Giants Need to Find a Sense of Urgency

November 30, 2010

NEW YORK – I have been very disturbed by the trend I have seen with Big Blue lately. I have lost that sense of security that the Giants will overcome whatever is thrown at them. These feelings have festered for one reason alone and that is the fact that the Giants are not beating the teams they should be destroying. Here we are with five games left in the season and the Giants are sitting at 7-4 and tied for first place in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles. Quite honestly, they are lucky to be where they are at because they could have easily lost the Jaguars game last week. The Giants won the game against the Jaguars but they did not beat them.

Now, most fans would say “Hey, they are in first place and coming off a comeback win, what are you complaining about?” First of all, I am not complaining about anything, I am simply pointing out the fact that the Giants are not performing to the level of talent on the team. I am concerned with the lack of performance in the 1st and 2nd quarters specifically. We are very aware of the fact that Big Blue has suffered a number of injuries and have lost a ton of talent for the entire season. I’m positive that this has led to the backup players making a lot of mental errors because they were thrown into the starting roles they now own. The Giants lead the entire NFL in turnovers with 30. They are also getting way too many penalties, even though the refs have blown many of the calls this year. Both of these horrible statistics can be attributed to mental errors, something that head coach Tom Coughlin is not known for.

When I say that the Giants need to find a sense of urgency, I am simply asking the team not to believe their record of 7-4. I do not mean to insult anyone inside the Giants organization. Obviously, we are all huge Giants fans here at nygreporter or we would not have this family friendly Giants website on the internet. The team needs to hear the fans when we say that the past 3 weeks have been ugly. I truly believe that this is the most crucial point in the 2010 season and the G-Men have to understand that it can all end very abruptly if they do not play like their season is in jeopardy, because it is. If the team does not adopt this sense of urgency and play with a deeper purpose and focus, then I think the season will end as a major disappointment. The Giants will need to win three out of the five remaining games (including three division rival games) to finish at 10-6, something that doesn’t guarantee a playoff spot but should be enough to squeak in.

The Giants play the Redskins next in New Meadowlands stadium this Sunday at 1PM EST.

Giants vs. Jaguars, NFL Week 12: Game Notes

November 28, 2010

NEW YORK – The New York Giants were coming off back to back losses to division rivals and they needed a win badly. I did not think this would be an easy game because Jacksonville has some very talented players on their team, including RB Maurice Jones Drew. But the Jaguars kicked the crap out of the Giants today in every area of the game. The Giants gave a pitiful performance once again for the first three quarters, then seemed to come to life in the fourth quarter. They cannot continue this new trend of laying down for three quarters and hoping to come to life late in a game to save the day. It will not work and they will not make it back to the playoffs playing like this. The Giants won this game 24-20 but they won ugly.

There are still way too many mental errors being made. The turnovers (Giants lead NFL with 30) and penalties are killing Big Blue this year, couple that with the enormous loss of talent to the IR list and a middle of the road team is what you are left with. The Giants have become a mid level NFL team. It pains me to admit that because I am first and foremost a fan but there is no denying what I have seen with my own two eyes. The Giants are going to have to win back my trust and prove me wrong. I understand the injuries to starting players are very difficult to overcome but it is much more then that. I am still rooting for them to win every week and have not lost faith in Big Blue but they need to play better.

The amount of dropped and tipped balls by the WR’s and TE’s are completely unacceptable. This is an area of the game that is overlooked sometimes but not by me. The team needs to work on this just as much as they concern themselves with all of the fumbles. Dropped and tipped balls kill drives the same way a fumble does. The lack of energy and sense of confusion permeating off the G-men is what is upsetting. I don’t mind if they lose a game straight up but I loathe losing games due to mistakes. The Giants won the football game today and raised their record to 7-4. They will try to keep things rolling when the Redskins come to New Meadowlands stadium next week at 1PM EST.

Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game today.

– QB Eli Manning had another decent game and finished with 226 yards 2 TD’s 0 INT’s.

– RB Brandon Jacobs got the start today and had a good game. He finished with 87 yards 0 TD’s.

– TE Kevin Boss had a great game and finsihed with 74 yards and a huge TD late in the game.

– RB Ahmad Bradshaw had some good runs at key moments and finished with 49 yards 0 TD’s.

– WR Mario Manningham had a good game as the No. 1 WR and finished with 61 yards and 1 TD.

– DT Barry Cofield had a nice game and seemed to be in on every play today, even though the stats don’t show it.

– S Deon Grant led all defensive tacklers with 8 today. Grant was a huge off season pick up who has emerged as a leader.

– K Lawrence Tynes had another perfect game (3/3) and has completely redeemed himself in my opinion.

– Rookie P Matt Dodge continues his see saw season with another up and down game.

– The Giants make shift offensive line did not give up a sack the entire game.

– TE Travis Beckum had a nice catch for 29 yards and seems to be getting more work on offense.

– DE Justin Tuck was all over the field today and made some very big plays. He also shared a sack with Antrel Rolle.

– OC Kevin Gilbride continues to disappoint with his conservative offensive play calling.

– DC Perry Fewell continues to impress with his defensive schemes and game instincts.

– The Giants defense had a better game statistically, then it looked like live on TV. They finished with 4 sacks 1 INT 3 forced fumbles.

– Rookie DE Jason Pierre-Paul had a great game including a key play in the 4th quarter. He also had 2 sacks.

– The Giants special teams needs a complete overhaul. I’m not sure if it’s Tom Quinn or the players but somethings gotta give.

– The Giants are still turning the ball over way too much, in fact the lead the entire NFL with 30. The amount of penalties are getting ridiculous as well.

Happy Thanksgiving New York Giants Fans

November 25, 2010

NEW YORK – Everyone here at the nygreporter would like to wish all of our readers a very Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope that most of you will be with family and enjoying some great food and good company. For those of you who are unable to be with family, for any number of reasons, you are not forgotten either. Especially the men and women serving our military overseas. We are thankful for the service our military provides to keep America safe and strong. I hope that our readers remember the reason for Thanksgiving and can perform a random act of kindness to someone who truly needs it. These are rough days we are living in and you would be surprised by how much it means to some, to receive a simple act of kindness.

Be thankful that you are able to have such a charmed life in this great country of ours and keep your head up during these hard times. I hope that you all enjoy some great food and drink and the football games that have become a part of the Thanksgiving tradition. There are some really good games on today, including our division rivals, the Dallas Cowboys facing the red hot Saints. Dallas (3-7) isn’t a real threat to our standings but it would be nice to watch them lose on Thanksgiving anyway.

God bless all of you and your families and don’t forget that the New York Giants will face the Jaguars this Sunday at 1PM EST at New Meadowlands stadium. Fans will anxiously be expecting a victory against Jacksonville to bring the team back on track. If ever there was a must win game, this is it. I predict a 34-17 Giants victory.

New York Giants Can’t Catch a Break

November 23, 2010

NEW YORK – The New York Giants have problems, big problems. The team has not been able to stay healthy since 2008. The 2009 NFL season may be one of the worst on record as far as injuries are concerned. The 2010 NFL season is slowly catching up to that infamous honor. There is absolutely nothing more frustrating then having a ton of talent on a team that cannot play due to injuries. I get physically ill when I think about the pro bowlers and supreme talent who have landed on the IR this year or who have missed significant playing time due to injuries.

The Giants have been making so many mid-season transactions, that it has become difficult to keep track of them all. It seems like the team is brining in a new player every single week. The news broke yesterday about star WR Hakeem Nicks having to miss at least 3 weeks with a leg injury and it was just another punch to the gut. The Giants already have players, who are playing games with injuries and legging them out. I will leave a current list of players who are missing significant time in 2010 below, so you can see for yourself what the team is dealing with.

Last year, the defense was the main problem and that has been fixed with the arrival of DC Perry Fewell and a bunch of new players. In 2010, the special teams has effected more games then I care to discuss and the offense has been turning the ball over at an astonishing rate. So far, turnovers and the special teams play are number one and two on my list of issues. Not too far behind and perhaps tied with one of the previous two items are the injuries. The Giants can’t seem to catch a break this year, after once again having a promising first half of the season. The Giants have had the No.1 defense and a top three offense for much of the first half of the 2010 NFL season and now it seems to be slipping away week by week. They are currently the No.2 defense and No.3 offense in the NFL with a 6-4 record.

This season is far from over and the G-Men are capable of running the table when healthy but when your three starting WR’s are Mario Manningham, Duke Calhoun and Derek Hagan, you may run into some problems because those are your No.3, No.4 and No.5 WR’s on the depth chart. Not to mention that TE Kevin Boss has been banged up all year and has missed time, further taking away weapons from Eli manning who is having a solid season despite his meltdown against the Eagles this past weekend.

The 6-4 Giants will reportedly sign the 6’4″ former Tampa Bay WR Michael Clayton to a one year deal today, to help the depleted WR corps. Clayton is a young 28 year old player with six years of NFL experience under his belt. He will be brought in from his current Omaha team with the UFL. This might be just the thing this young man needs to live up to his potential. The Giants will need to clear the air and get focused for their next game this weekend against the Jaguars at 1PM EST in New Meadowlands stadium.

Let’s take a look at some of the injured players for Big Blue.

– QB Jim Sorgi – Injured Reserve List

– WR Ramses Barden – Injured Reserve List

– WR Domenik Hixon – Injured Reserve List

– WR Victor Cruz – Injured Reserve List

– DE Mathias Kiwanuka – Injured Reserve List

– LB Adrian Tracy – Injured Reserve List

– S Michael Johnson – Injured Reserve List

– CB Bruce Johnson – Injured Reserve List

– OL Adam Koets – Injured Reserve List

– S Chad Jones – Non Football Injury -Injured Reserve List

– WR Steve Smith – Week to Week

– WR Hakeem Nicks – Week to Week

– OL Shaun O’Hara – Week to Week

– OL David Diehl – Week to Week

– FB Madison Hedgecock – Week to Week

Giants vs. Eagles, NFL Week 11: Game Notes

November 22, 2010

NEW YORK – The New York Giants were coming off an embarrassing loss to the lowly Cowboys last week, while the Eagles were coming off a record setting victory against the Redskins. Both the Giants and Eagles were tied for first place in the NFC East with 6-3 records. Football fans expected an excellent game and depending on who you were rooting for, you got what you asked for. The Giants lost 27-17 in another heartbreaker. This game was harder to watch then the loss to the Cowboys last week.

The first three quarters were like watching a car accident for Giants fans. Nothing was going right for Big Blue and the mishaps multiplied with fumbles and penalties and turnovers. Head Coach Tom Coughlin looked like his head was going to explode on the sidelines and mine was throbbing too at one point. The special teams play was atrocious once again and OC Kevin Gilbride was being too conservative in the first half. DC Perry Fewell did an incredible job handling the explosive Eagles offense the entire game.

QB Michael Vick was contained about as well as you can contain that guy. The Giants defense played a great game but came up particularly huge in the fourth quarter. In fact, the entire Giants team seemed to come to life in the fourth quarter. They were playing with a seriously banged up offensive line, not to mention 11 players resting comfortably (not) on the IR list. This second straight loss to division rivals in the past two weeks has fans scratching their heads and wondering why the team is not performing at the level they should be at.

Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.

– QB Eli Manning had a very poor game and finished with 147 yards 2 TD’s 3 INT’s 1 fumble. Eli also had 22 rush yards.

– The Giants defense was the true star of this game. They finished with 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles.

– DE Justin Tuck had an awesome game finishing with all 3 of Big Blues sacks.

– RB Ahmad Bradshaw had a below average game tonight. He finished with 29 yards 0 TD’s 2 fumbles.

– Rookie punter Matt Dodge was up and down all night. This kid might not be with the team next season.

– WR Hakeem Nicks had a decent game but below his standards. He finished with 65 yards 0 TD’s.

– DC Perry Fewell deserves the game ball for this game. His game plan was phenomenal.

– The Giants special teams are simply atrocious and need a complete overhaul soon.

– TE Kevin Boss had a decent game and finished with 22 yards.

– TE Travis Beckum got a little involved and finished with 2 yards 1 TD.

– WR Derek Hagan, who was brought back to replace Ramses Barden who landed on IR, had 10 yards 1 TD.

– CB Terrell Thomas had an incredible game and led all tacklers for the Giants with 9.

– RB Brandon Jacobs had a poor game and finished with 10 yards 0 TD’s.

– WR Mario Manningham was quiet for most of the game and finished with 24 yards.
