They say that all good things must come to an end. With that being said, we have reached the final day and round of our “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” segment. It has been a pleasure to do these comparisons for our readers and we hope you learned as much as we did. We are now only 2 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. Although, I do not like the NFL experimenting with this new 3-day NFL Draft event, I am excited to have finally reached draft week. I believe that Roger Goodell will find it to be an unsuccessful venture and return to the traditional 2-day draft weekend that all football fans have grown to love. They are trying to generate an air of excitement for something that doesn’t need any promotion and it is coming off as an over dramatic soap opera. They are doing the same thing with releasing the 2010 NFL schedule TONIGHT at 7:00 PM EST. A 3-hour television event for releasing the 2010 schedule? Really Roger?

There are some very good players listed here for round one. This is going to be just as difficult to choose a winner, as it was in round two. With QB Eli Manning staring us in the face, I don’t know how we can choose Jerry Reese outright. Once again, Accorsi is missing a pick this round and Jerry Reese has held on to all of his. We have some Pro Bowl players listed here and some that have had extremely short NFL Careers thus far. WR Hakeem Nicks should have an outstanding season in 2010 and if Kenny Phillips can return healthy, he will be a force at the safety position. DE Mathias Kiwanuka continues to push his case for a starting role and if Osi talks his way out of New York, he will get his shot.
Taking everything into consideration from the history we have shown here, I have to give round one to Ernie Accorsi. Eli Manning is just too much to pass over because he is the cream of this crop and a Super Bowl MVP. CB Aaron Ross and S Kenny Phillips have had injuries that have limited their careers thus far but that isn’t Jerry Reese’s fault. Both of these players could have outstanding careers if they can remain healthy.

It feels like we just started doing this segment yesterday but here we are almost at the end. Tomorrow will be the final day of the “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” comparisons, as we reach the first and last round. We are now only 3 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. This is an extremely unique situation that will not happen again until Jerry Reese decides to retire and a new GM takes over the reins. The 3 year see-saw of draft pick comparisons might not happen again for at least a decade, so I hope all of our readers enjoyed this. I can honestly say that Jerry Reese has done an outstanding job replacing a legend in the pro football world. New York Giants fans have nothing to complain about when it comes to the front office.

This has been the most difficult round to compare in this segment so far. Both Reese and Accorsi have done an outstanding job here by drafting players who have already made it to the Pro Bowl. I am going to call round two a push in my opinion. Let me explain why I see round two as being equal. If we “x” out the solid players such as OL Snee, CB Webster, WR Smith and CB Thomas, that leaves us with WR Moss, LB Sintim and OT Beatty. Moss is clearly the bust out of all of these guys but Sintim and Beatty are too young to have proven anything yet. So Moss being invisible “x’s” out Sintim and Beatty’s inexperience. I have to give Jerry Reese some extra credit for once again grabbing two players in a round and holding on to all of the Giants picks.

Are you beginning to get excited Giants fans? We are now only 4 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. All of our research and investigation of players will soon be over and we will finally know who the G-men had on their radar all along. Big Blue had a busy week last week, they signed a few players and seem to be just about ready to enter the War Room and lock it down. I anticipate one or two more moves, on the teams behalf, before the draft this Thursday night. I don’t think it will be anything major but you never know with Jerry Reese. I am still not counting out a possible trade on draft day but it seems unlikely given Reese’s history of holding onto his picks.
In case you haven’t read the previous “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” articles, what we are doing is comparing Ernie Accorsi’s last three years as GM with the team and Jerry Reese’s first three years as the new GM. We are not comparing these men to find a winner but rather taking a look at the past six years and what rewards have come from their work. There are no winners in these comparisons, we are just doing something entertaining for the fans leading up to draft day.

This is a difficult round for me to decide between Accorsi and Reese but once again, I have to give it to Reese. I’m giving Reese the nod in round three because he drafted double the players and all of them are still on the team. I also like the fact that he was able to get two picks in round three last year. Defensive end Justin Tuck is a huge pick of course and we need to give Accorsi credit for scouting him. I never envisioned the Giants as a team that did a lot of deals during the draft. But after seeing how many picks are absent from Accorsi’s final three drafts, is really opening my eyes. Until I laid everything out like this, I had no idea that the team had been consistently giving up that many picks.
Another thing that stands out in my mind is exactly how young the G-men are. The New York Giants are a very young football team and about to get even younger next weekend. If you take a look at our previous articles, where we take a look at every position on the team, you will see that a lot of those positions are extremely young. A player with only four or five years of NFL experience is considered the veteran in those areas.

The 2010 NFL Draft is now 5 days away Giants fans. Today, we take a look at the round four picks from the past six years. So far, Jerry Reese has proven to be extremely resourceful by garnering the nod for rounds 5,6 and 7 over Accorsi. Will he be able to run the table and grab round four as well? True Giants fans know that comparing both of these men is like comparing Michael Jordan to Magic Johnson. Opinions may vary on who was the better player but all will agree that both were great. Both are great in their own right and we are merely comparing picks here and not the men.

Finally, we have a round that goes to Ernie Accorsi and a round where Accorsi has all of his picks. There should be no doubt at all that round four has been a monster for Accorsi in his final three years as the New York Giants general manager. In my opinion, all three of his picks are winners. Reggie Torbor is a player that I have always liked, Brandon Jacobs is the starting running back for the G-men and Barry Cofield is solid as a rock in his defensive tackle position. I like all three of these players and all have proven to be wise choices. Jerry Reese didn’t do bad either. All three of the players Reese picked are still on the team. DeOssie and Kehl have had more opportunities to play then Brown (Brown was injured for his entire rookie season in 2009) but Brown has some serious potential to grow and flourish.

Today we will take a look at the New York Giants round five picks for the past six years. We will be comparing former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi and current Giants GM Jerry Reese’s draft picks and making our own 2010 NFL Draft pick by position. There are now 6 days remaining until the 2010 NFL Draft. I want to be clear that this isn’t a comparison of careers and in no way is this a disrespectful analysis of either of these fine men. This is a pre-draft segment that we thought would be entertaining for the week leading up to the 2010 NFL Draft. The three years we are looking at for Ernie Accorsi are a fraction of his legendary career.
Let’s take a look at what the short history of round five picks for the G-men are.

Once again, I have to give the edge to Jerry Reese in round five. Ernie Accorsi has kept his record in tact, by not having a pick available in round five. The main reason I am giving Reese the nod is because of TE Kevin Boss. Although safety Gibril Wilson was an equally good player, he is no longer on the Giants and was recently released by Miami. Jonathan Goff could find himself in a starting role this year along with Boss, another reason why I have to give Jerry Reese some extra points. Does it strike anyone else as strange, that Accorsi is missing a pick in each round for his last three years with the team? I’m not talking conspiracy strange, just strange that I hadn’t really noticed it before. A future article might have to investigate what the Giants gained from giving up those picks.

The New York Giants have re-signed WR Sinorice Moss to a one year deal. I have been extremely vocal about my feelings of Moss. I am in awe as to how Moss is still on the team. Not unlike the Danny Ware situation, I am having a difficult time trying to justify either of them getting re-signed. Of course, I am not privy to the same information as the front office but just looking at both of their career numbers speaks volumes. This will be Sinorice Moss’ final year with the Giants, if he still doesn’t show the team or fans anything, then he should pull a Javon Walker and give back the money. There are only so many spots open on the roster and I have a hard time with the Moss subject when it comes up.
You may not believe what I’m about to share with you (if you don’t, look it up) but here are Sinorice Moss’ career numbers since the Giants drafted him. Moss has exactly 39 receptions for 421 yards and 3 TD’s. He has five years of NFL experience and a ton of injury time. I understand that players get injured and that things happen but this is amazing to me. You have to wonder if he has a cousin working in the human resources department or something at this point. I have nothing against the guy personally but we all have to justify ourselves in the workplace and measuring him with that scale tells me he should be fired.

Here we are on day two of the “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” segment. We will be examining the past six years of drafts by round. A different set of rounds everyday for seven days. The legendary Ernie Accorsi will be compared to the young buck (I say that with respect) Jerry Reese. The 2010 NFL Draft is now exactly one week away. What will the Giants do? Could they still grab a player via free agency? Will there be a major trade announced? It’s beginning to get very interesting, the closer we get to draft day.
Now, let’s take a look at the New York Giants round six picks for the past six years.

After taking a look at the history above, I think it is fair to say that round six is a push between these two legends. OT Adam Koets is the only player out of them all that may have any promise of making a living in New York. Robert Henderson would fall to second on the list if I had to choose. It is nothing against the other players that the G-men drafted, it’s just the nature of the business to be somewhat judgmental. The one pattern that I am picking up on thus far, is that Ernie Acorsi seems to be missing picks quite a bit. No doubt from wheeling and dealing but I find it interesting that while Accorsi has given up a pick in each round so far, Reese continues to be stingy with his draft picks and has retained them all. Both of these men are experts at what they do and trying to figure out which system is best is ludicrous. A blend of both styles might be the best thing for New York.

The New York Giants signed third year, RFA OT Guy Whimper, to a deal today. This is a smart move on the teams behalf. They also cut journeyman DT Anthony Bryant before the weekend, which makes me look at the DT position as needing more work now, then the offensive line does. Bryant is a big guy at 6’3″ 337 pounds and has played on four different teams in his four year NFL career. This could move the defensive tackle position above a mid round offensive lineman. There are only five defensive tackles on the current New York Giants roster. Do you think this will alter the Giants draft intentions at all? Is the defensive tackle position in need of more help? DT Barry Cofield and DT Jay Alford have proven themselves to be playmakers. It is time for Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard to step up in 2010. I think DT Fred Robbins could have stayed on the Giants for another year but I wish him well with the Rams.
Offensive tackle Guy Whimper, has been on the field in a limited capacity, on different occasions and done well. The team must certainly believe they are better off with him, then without him. I think it is a good idea to keep guys who know the system and what to expect. I am not leaving out the possibility of the Giants using their 15th pick on either the OL or LB positions. At this point, I’m going to have to throw DT into the mix and round out my top three possibilities by position in this years draft. The three, in order are LB, OL, DT. I’m glad that Whimper will be with the team in 2010.

The NFL has started to do something very interesting, in honor of the 75th anniversary of the NFL Draft. They have started a versus section on NFL.com, where fans can vote on one player versus another. You could have Joe Montana facing off against Phil Simms or Ray Lewis squared up against Mike Singletary. I know this is a question that has been asked for years and something that has been dissected and examined by all fans. But for all of our efforts, we still don’t know the answer.
How is it possible to figure out who was the greatest NFL player of all time? It’s impossible to me. I am a Giants fan, so of course I am going to say LB Lawrence Taylor. A Bears fan will most likely say RB Walter Payton. A 49ers fan might say WR Jerry Rice. It seems like for all of the effort put into this question, the best we can all do collectively, is choose a top 5 or top 10 list. Taylor, Payton and Rice are all on that list by the way. Some have to break it down by offense and defensive players. Some just roll their eyes when asked for their choice. I’m not sure what scientific formula could produce the answer but I am going to stick with Lawrence Taylor as the greatest football player of all time.
We all know he changed the game forever with his unique style of attacking. We all know that he has had off field issues that make some doubters dismiss his superiority on the field. If we start small, say at the linebacker position, can you give me the name of a better linebacker in NFL history then LT? OK I didn’t think so. On to the next question, can you tell me the name of any defensive player who is better then LT? Again, you would be hard pressed but here is where it gets tricky. When we begin to look at the NFL as a whole and include offensive players into the mix, the picture becomes cloudy. Payton and Rice to be specific are just as talented and athletic as LT was. The difference is what they made their bodies do with that athleticism. A running back, a wide receiver and a linebacker. I’m sure some of you have your own choices to throw into the mix and please feel free to do so. But out of the three players I mentioned, I’m picking LT because defense wins championships. I would love to hear what you think. Is LT the greatest football player of all time?

I see LaDainian Tomlinson still on the market and I’m wondering how that is possible? Even a 30 year old Tomlinson (I choose not to refer to him as LT, out of respect for Lawrence Taylor) has still got some gas in the tank and can run circles around a lot of current NFL RB’s. To answer the title question, Yes. Tomlinson could and should become a New York Giant. I could see him signing a 2 or 3 year deal with the team and split carries with Brandon Jacobs. We would need to cut Danny Ware and use Ahmad Bradshaw as a third down back. In truth, Tom Coughlin could just start the hot RB and inter-change them at will.
The bottom line is that having Jacobs, Bradshaw & Tomlinson is a good problem to have. It instantly upgrades us to one of the best RB Corps in the NFL. It might also be just what the doctor ordered for Tomlinson, splitting carries in this point in his career would only extend it. I would keep RB Andre Brown on the roster because he has a lot of potential in the NFL and nobody got to see what the sophomore can do yet. He was injured early in training camp during his rookie season last year. Jerry Reese must have Tomlinson on his radar, even if it were to glance at the prospect of bringing him to New York. I will support what ever choice he makes because he is able to see more then we can.
The Giants still need a middle linebacker as their number one priority but nailing down Tomlinson for 2 or 3 years, will fill a lot of seats in the New Meadowlands Stadium and put the Big Blue running game into a higher bracket. We will have to wait and see where he ends up. Reports are claiming that the Vikings appear to be the most interested at this point.

They say that all good things must come to an end. With that being said, we have reached the final day and round of our “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” segment. It has been a pleasure to do these comparisons for our readers and we hope you learned as much as we did. We are now only 2 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. Although, I do not like the NFL experimenting with this new 3-day NFL Draft event, I am excited to have finally reached draft week. I believe that Roger Goodell will find it to be an unsuccessful venture and return to the traditional 2-day draft weekend that all football fans have grown to love. They are trying to generate an air of excitement for something that doesn’t need any promotion and it is coming off as an over dramatic soap opera. They are doing the same thing with releasing the 2010 NFL schedule TONIGHT at 7:00 PM EST. A 3-hour television event for releasing the 2010 schedule? Really Roger?
