New York Giants Bye Week Blues

NEW YORK – I know that the title of this story sounds a bit misleading, so let me explain. The Giants don’t have the bye week blues, it is I who has the blues. The Giants are rolling into the bye week as the best team in the NFC and they also have sole possession (5-2 record) of 1st place in the NFC East. I’m happy about their productivity but I have the blues because now we have to wait an extra week before we can see them play again. Sounds selfish I know but they way that Big Blue has dominated the past month gives me reason to want to see more.

After a shaky start to the 2010 NFL season, the G-men seem to headed back to the playoffs. Everything is clicking on defense and the offense has been moving right along but the special teams is the achilles heel of the team this year. The defense has been outstanding and new DC Perry Fewell needs to be recognized for coaching the Giants to the No.2 overall defense in the NFL. This group has been playing like a bunch of mad men. They are 2nd in the NFL against the pass and 3rd in the NFL against the run. What a difference a year makes, huh Giants fans? If this group can stay healthy and continue playing at this high level, they should finish the season as a top 3 NFL defense.

The offense is nothing to overlook either. The Giants own the No.1 rusher in the NFL in RB Ahmad Bradshaw and have the 4th best rushing team in the NFL. They are 9th best in the NFL in passing. QB Eli Manning has had some tough breaks with cheap INT’s going against him via tipped balls but other then that he has been great. A big reason for Manning’s productivity is the emergence of WR Hakeem Nicks, whom I predicted would make the pro bowl before the season started. The offensive line has survived numerous injuries and come together in a big way. RB Brandon Jacobs has been playing team ball since becoming the No. 2 RB and Bradshaw has been lights out. The rest of the WR group has been contributing exactly how we thought they would be. This is an impressive offense that can be lethal when they get in the zone.

I hope the team can get their players healthy and back on the field for the second half of the season. They are going to need every man they can get to make it back to the playoffs and to make a serious run at the Super Bowl. Even with all of the success the team has had, they still placed 10 players on the injured reserve list so far this year and seem to be turning the ball over way too much. There were some serious names on the IR list including OL WIlliam Beatty, DE Mathias Kiwanuka and WR Domenik Hixon just to name a few. This is the second consecutive year that injuries have played a role in effecting the Giants game plan. It must be frustrating for Coach Coughlin but it is nice to see the depth that GM Jerry Reese has put in place finally paying off. I fully expect the Giants to make it back to the playoffs and continue to roll to a possible 11-5 final record. Big Blue will travel to Seattle when they get through with the bye week to face a tough Seahawks team.

Giants vs. Lions, NFL Week 6: Game Notes

NEW YORK – The New York Giants played a desperate Detroit Lions team today in a game some were calling a trap game. Luckily for Big Blue, they beat the Lions 28-20 and improved to 4-2 on the season. This was a close game and I was actually nervous towards the end when the two minute warning came. The Lions played with a lot of heart and I take my hat off to them.

The Giants placed rookie WR Victor Cruz on the IR list (the 10th player added) and signed K Shayne Graham to the team after learning that K Lawrence Tynes was injured and would be inactive. Not a very good way to start the game considering all of the issues the special teams have had thus far in 2010. The good news is that the G-Men started this game with the No.1 defense in the NFL and the No.5 offense.

Former disappointing Giants safety CC Brown, made some comments about QB Eli Manning before the game. Not insulting comments but certainly judgmental. He seems to be all talk because he did not have a very good game and even appeared to try and cheap shot some of the players. A scary moment came in the second half when Lions LB Zach Follett was taken off the field on a cart, reports say he has movement in his arms and legs, Thank God. We wish him a speedy recovery.

The Detroit Lions have a lot of work to do in order to improve, I almost felt bad for them today. It’s hard to measure how good the Giants played today because the Lions are such a subpar team. A win is a win and I’m sure that nobody is complaining about it but it will be nice to see Big Blue lump up some tough teams.

Let’s take a look at some of my notes from today’s game.

– P Matt “Get Outta” Dodge turned the ball over on his first attempt. The fans officially have had enough of the rookie and I actually feel bad for the kid but he has to go.

– RB Brandon Jacobs has been quietly getting his mojo back and had another productive game. He finished with 2 TD’s on 35 yards.

– The Giants defense has been dominating the past three weeks and very fun to watch. DC Perry Fewell is a hit in New York.

– WR Steve Smith had a very good game. He led all receivers with 70 yards on 6 catches.

– QB Eli Manning had a very nice game and did not make any big mistakes. He finished with 177 yards and 2 TD’s 0 INT’s.

– DE Osi Umenyiora is beginning to get hot after his second consecutive two sack game. Osi also had two forced fumbles.

– RB Ahmad Bradshaw had another solid performance and finished the game with 133 yards.

– QB Eli Manning has passed for over 20,000 yards. His achievement today was only the second time (Phil Simms) in team history a QB has done so.

– LB MIchael Boley led all tacklers with eight for Big Blue. He is a big part of the defense and has been doing a good job.

– WR Mario Manningham got back into the mix with a nice TD grab in the 2nd quarter. He finished with 51 yards.

– The Giants defense knocked Lions QB Shaun Hill out of the game in the 2nd quarter. The 4th QB to be knocked out by the Giants this season.

– TE Kevin Boss had a good game and made a couple of big catches. He finished with 27 yards.

– S Antrel Rolle had a crucial INT in the 4th quarter to seal the victory. Great job Antrel!

– TE Travis Beckum scored a TD in the 3rd quarter. The young TE is still developing but has made strides so far.

– K Shayne Graham made all four of his extra point attempts in his first game as a New York Giant.

New York Giants OL Koets Proving His Value

In the last few years, whenever anyone thought about the Giants’ offense, one of the first things that came to mind was the offensive line. One of the most coveted units in the league, the Shaun O’Hara-lead group has been a real asset to Big Blue.

Nevertheless, there comes a time where every asset depreciates. Fighting against age, O’Hara went down with an ankle injury and has now missed three consecutive games. Looking at a logic standpoint, us Giants fans should be very worried, but yet for some reason we are not. Well, I give you that reason, his name is Adam Koets.

Ever since he had to step up to cover O’Hara’s spot Koets has been  playing with confidence and quality, allowing the offense not to missa beat.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 draft, Koets used to play tackle at the Oregon State University, where he was a second team All Pac-10 Conference selection after helping the team to average 360.6 yards per game in his senior season. Also in his time with Oregon State, he was a three-time Academic All-Pac 10 Conference selection.

Being very smart, and an athletic player for his size (6 ft 5 300 lb), the Giants coaching staff, who favor versatile players, quickly recognized Koets’ ability to play multiple positions within the o-line, and, being in need of a backup center, decided to try him at such position during the 2009 off season.

One season later, this Santa Ana, California, native, sky diving, bungee jumping adrenaline-seeker is exactly what Big Blue hoped he would become: a quality, smart and versatile player able to fill in and keep the high level presented by owner of the position, and, most importantly, allowing me to sleep at night…

New York Giants Face Trap Game

The New York Giants, looking to increase their first winning streak in a year, face the NFL’s punching bag of the last few seasons, the Detroit Lions (1-4), at home in the new Meadowlands Stadium. Easy matchup, one might think. That is where a mistake can be made. As I said, this is a trap game.

The Lions, although having only one win in the season, have more fight in them than meets the eye. Just looking at the games this season, out of the 4 losses, it is very easy to see that those games were not decided until the very end.

In the season opener against Chicago, a blown call nullified a Calvin Johnson touchdown that would most likely assure the win for Detroit.

Then you move on to analyze the Eagles game, and the story continues. The Lions scored a touchdown with 1:55 left, made the two-point conversion, putting the game at 35-32, then on the ensuing kickoff they recovered an onside kick. They were not able to capitalize on that, but again the game was decided on the final seconds.

Against Green Bay, a team that is supposed to be one of the finest in the NFC, once again Detroit was able to push the game until the fourth quarter, the final score being 28-26. These three games could have easily gone either way, and Detroit could be, say, a 3-2 team, just like our beloved Giants.

With that in mind, it is paramount to stay focused and duly prepare for this game. As it is said quite frequently in this organization, “every game is important“. The way the Giants have been playing is impressive and inspiring, however, paraphrasing Antrel Rolle, it is always better to win three in a row than two in a row.

NYG Jacobs Throws a Tantrum; Asks to be Traded

NEW YORK – The morning after and embarrassing loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the New York Giants’ former thousand yard rusher asks for a trade, this according to Sports Illustrated and numerous other sources. RB Brandon Jacobs, who had back to back thousand plus yard seasons in 2007 and 2008 (despite missing a few games in each season) has not seen anywhere near that success since the departure of Derrick Ward. In this still very fresh season, Jacobs is averaging 3.3 yards per carry, and only had 8 yards on 4 carries last night.

It should also be noted that he had a mishap in the third quarter in which his helmet ended about ten rows deep in the lap of a Colts’ fan. Jacobs claims he was frustrated and told reporters that he did not attempt to throw his helmet into the stands it merely got caught on his fingers. The league is investigating the incident and it is likely that Jacobs will be fined.

Jacobs did not see another carry the rest of the night after the incident occurred and ESPN reports that when asked about this Jacobs once again lost his temper. This isn’t the first time Jacobs lost his cool over playing time. In the preseason, Jacobs was demoted to backup behind RB Ahmad Bradshaw and Jacobs was furious. While that was only a short while ago, it is discouraging to see that he was not able to work through this time in his career.

While seeing a Giant who was truly a Big Blue icon turn sour is sad, it is even worse to look at the depth chart and realize trading him may not be an option. Behind Jacobs, on the roster, are DJ Ware and return man Reynaud. D.J. has shown some promise, but his running style is none too different from that of Bradshaw and would not be a good change of pace back in this situation. The only way Jacobs would be dealt is if another back was given in return.

That being said, it is hard to gauge how much interest their will be for a seemingly washed up bruiser like Jacobs. Few teams play the bruising style and it is hard to know who would be interested in his services. A few name come to immediate mind though.

Buffalo may be the most obvious option. None of their backs have seen outstanding production as injuries have pushed C.J. Spiller into the starting role. There has been some speculation that they are trying to move on of their backs though so bringing another one in, or even trading one for one, doesn’t make much sense. Another name in the mix might be Oakland, although McFadden had a decent game yesterday nothing Al Davis does can come as a surprise anymore.

It would be very difficult to see Jacobs leave, especially on these terms. Unless he can turn it around just like Osi did earlier this year, I think he has to go. There is no sense in keeping around an unruly and unhappy back if he isn’t producing, what’s the point. If the Giants can find any hint of value, I urge Jerry Reese to pull the trigger on this one.

Giants Part Ways With LB Kehl, Activate TE Bear Pascoe

NEW YORK – The team announced a surprising move yesterday with the activation of TE Bear Pascoe from the practice squad and onto the team. The Pascoe move isn’t what surprised me, in fact I announced that the moment I saw TE Kevin Boss go down during the Carolina Panthers game. What surprises me is the fact the the team cut LB Bryan Kehl. I guess the fans have to accept what the team feels is in it’s best interest but I thought Kehl was a hard worker and someone who could flourish when he grasps the game.

Bryan Kehl (6’2″ 240 pounds) was drafted by the G-Men in 2008 and grabbing Kehl was as easy as pick 123 in the fourth round. I’m not sure if the team felt they had better players at the position to hold onto or if they feel that Kehl is a bust. The message boards exploded at the news that certain players were granted a spot on the team, even though they are listed on the IR, production wise, it didn’t make sense to some people. The fans will have to have faith in Coach Coughlin and GM Jerry Reese, who are making these choices with the teams best interest in mind.

The activation of TE Bear Pascoe is something that needed to happen, now that Boss’ status is questionable due to a concussion. You cannot head into a game with only one TE available. TE Travis Beckum has become the number one tight end on the team for now. There is no question that Boss is the number one starter when he returns. Kevin Boss is no stranger to injuries and his aggressive play is the cause of his pain. He makes the tough catches and he takes the hits.

In other news, former Giants RB Andre Brown has been cut by the Denver Broncos. There was a lot of positive buzz surrounding Brown when he was drafted last year but reports are saying he hasn’t been the same since his injury that forced him to miss the entire 2009 season.

The New York Giants face the Indianapolis Colts this weekend (8:20 PM EST) in Manning Bowl II. Big Blue will travel to Peyton’s place Sunday night, in the highly anticipated rematch between brothers Peyton and Eli. If the Giants win this game, they will have started the 2010 season at 2-0, while brother Peyton’s Colts will have started at 0-2.

New York Giants 2010 Pre-Regular Season QA

NEW YORK – Hello Giants Fans, how about that title? I was going to make it longer but decided against it. After watching the Giants beat the Patriots 20-17 for the final preseason game last week, I began to wonder how the G-men would do against the Panthers in week one. Giants fans want revenge for the Panthers crushing Big Blue at the end of last season. This game means a lot to the fans, no matter what is said in the newspapers or on the websites.

The 2010 NFL regular season officially begins tomorrow night and the Giants play the Panthers this Sunday afternoon (9/12/10 – 1PM EST). The preseason is over and the time has come for the real deal.

During the long dry summer, Giants news can be few and far between, so it’s no wonder that fans were ravenous for information on the players this entire off season. There were a lot of new faces added to the roster and sadly, some that have gone elsewhere to play. Let’s evaluate some of the possibilities with these new players and predict the Giants fate as a team in 2010. GM Jerry Reese has done an outstanding job taking care of the problem areas and he has also secured some great talent for the coaches to utilize.

Let’s take a look at some of my pre-regular season predictions on who will perform well.

Question: Who will turn out to be the greatest addition to the team following the 2009 NFL season? Answer: S Antrel Rolle

Question: How many Giants will make the 2010 pro bowl and who will they be? Answer: 5 players including QB Eli Manning, WR Hakeem Nicks, CB Terrell Thomas, FB Madison Hedgecock and OL Chris Snee.

Question: Who will break a team record for receiving yards in a single season? Answer WR Hakeem Nicks

Question: Who will deserve the game ball for their performance against the Carolina Panthers? Answer: QB Eli Manning

Question: Will WR Victor Cruz surpass WR Mario Manningham for the third WR slot? Answer: Not in 2010 but if Cruz continues to play as he has in the preseason, it will be hard for the coaches to see him on the bench during the games.

Question: Will RB Ahmad Bradshaw be able to carry the load as the starting RB? Answer: Yes, he will be fine and RB Brandon Jacobs will get the goal line carries.

Question: Will new OL Shawn Andrews turn out to be the steal of the waivers this off season? Answer: It’s too early to say but I’m rooting for him.

Question: Will the New York Giants defense be a top ten defense in 2010 under new DC Perry Fewell? Answer: Yes, I believe the G-men return to form defensively in 2010.

Question: Who will lead the Giants defense in sacks this season? Answer: DE Justin Tuck

Question: Will QB Eli Manning surpass the 4,000 passing yard mark again in 2010? Answer: Yes, I believe Eli Manning will have a pro bowl year.

Question: Will the New York Giants return to the playoffs in 2010? Answer: Yes, the Giants will be back in 2010.

Question: Who will become the starting MLB for the Giants this year? Answer: LB Jonathan Goff

Question: Who are the Kings of the Castle at New Meadowlands stadium, the Giants or the Jets? Answer: The New York Giants

Question: Will the New York Giants win 12 or more games in 2010? Answer: No, I believe they will finish with a 11-5 record.

BONUS QUESTION: Who will win Super Bowl XLV on 02/06/2011? Answer: Green Bay Packers

New York Giants Select Eight Players for Practice Squad

NEW YORK – Hello Giants Fans, it should come as no surprise that the Giants chose eight players you will be very familiar with. The team did lose one player for certain when the Denver Broncos signed RB Andre Brown. This is a move that the Broncos should benefit from in the near future. Something must have spooked the team because I was surprised to see the G-Men let him go. You can include DT Jay Alford on that list of shockers.

I’m not sure how the fans feel about having QB Sage Rosenfels as the backup to Easy Eli but I know that none of these guys are as good as QB David Carr was. It’s not surprising to me at all that it would take a while to find a quality backup up Carr’s level. It is clear that the team wants to give Eli as many weapons as possible, hence the signing of two TE’s to the practice squad in Bear Pascoe and Jake Ballard. TE Kevin Boss is the lock at starter and everyone is curious to see if TE Travis Beckum will break out in 2010.

The Giants were horrible in the secondary last season, so it is no surprise that they would keep a couple of DB’s on the squad by retaining CB Seth Williams and S Sha’reef Rashad. These are also possible special teams additions later in the year if someone goes down. Special teams has seen key players retire or go on IR very early in 2010. These players include Jeff Feagles, Chad Jones, Domenik Hixon and Sinorice Moss. The G-men are beginning the 2010 season with seven players on the injured reserve list already (not to mention one of the PUP list). Fans cannot endure another injury plagued season back to back with 2009.

New Giants QB Sage Rosenfels and RB Darius Reynaud

NEW YORK – Hello Giants Fans, the 2010 NFL regular season begins in two days and the Giants are just about ready to get down to business. The G-Men signed QB Sage Rosenfels and RB Darius Reynaud, while they were making their cuts to get the roster down to fifty three players. I’m still in shock over the team letting DT Jay Alford go.

The Giants actually made a trade to get the return specialist Reynaud and backup QB Rosenfels from the Vikings, something very unlike GM Jerry Reese to do, since he took over for former GM Ernie Accorsi. I’m not here to report this news to you because it happened a couple of days ago. I’m writing this article to get some feedback on what you think of the transactions and if you agree with what the team did. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet.

I have to be honest, I was surprised to see Big Blue waive QB Rhett Bomar. I thought the guy played pretty well during the preseason. I’m glad that he cleared waivers and was signed to the Giants practice squad. He managed the game well and was not afraid to run the ball if the situation arose. I was equally surprised to see QB Sage Rosenfels signed to the team. I watched the video interview with him on Giants.com and found him to be a level headed guy who is eager to learn the playbook. He is a veteran who has been around for a while but hopefully he will not be needed as QB Eli Manning continues his Iron Man streak for starting consecutive games. He is currently third on that list behind only QB Brett Favre and his brother QB Peyton Manning. Rosenfels will be Manning’s only backup since the team placed QB Jim Sorgi on the IR list last month.

I’m not sure what to make of RB Darius Reynaud yet because I don’t know much about him. I had to look up what he has done and from what I see, it looks like he will be an upgrade to special teams that has been decimated by injuries early into the 2010 season. I’m placing my faith in the front office on this one and would not be surprised if Reynaud had a very good year. I was surprised the team let RB Andre Brown go. With Jacobs and Bradshaw getting over recent injuries, I can easily see this becoming a problem area if the guys can’t remain healthy.

Giants Make Final Roster Cuts, Ready For Season

NEW YORK – The New York Giants made their final roster cuts today and have now trimmed down to 53 players. This is a painful time for the players who worked their butts off but simply do not have a spot on the team due to roster limits. Every year, there are a couple of cut players that are very surprising to me and this year is no different. I would like to wish every single one of those players who were cut today all of the best in their future ventures. It is a harsh lesson that some of these young players must learn that things such as this are always about business and never personal.

The most surprising cut to me was DT Jay Alford. I have liked Alford since the team drafted him and will always consider him a New York Giant. The second surprise came from the team releasing RB Andre Brown. I thought Brown would be on the final roster for certain since both Jacobs and Bradshaw have had recent injuries. Brown himself was injured his rookie season and missed the entire year. Right or wrong, the team is now ready for the regular season, which begins at 1PM EST on Sunday September 12,2010 against the Carolina Panthers.
