12/23/11 Christmas DAC Day 23, 2012 NFL Draft

December 23, 2011

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, I know it seems way too early to start talking about the draft but it is in fact only 4 months away. The NFL will hold the draft in April 2012 at Radio City Music Hall as usual and fans will be giving their expert advice, all month long, to anyone who will listen. I will be no different on here, telling you what I think and what is needed. The first area of need continues to be the offensive line. They need more depth at this position and protecting Eli Manning is worth the first round pick. Manning is having a career year and they need the blue wall up to protect his NFL Iron Man streak. I would start the entire draft by picking up a 10 year beast in the middle. I have been talking about grabbing a first round offensive lineman for two years now. With Manning getting into his 30’s, this investment makes sense now more then ever. What do you think?

The next area I would focus on is the running back position. I love the guys we have on the team but injuries have forced me to look at the Giants depth. Drafting a young and strong RB to keep in the stable would be a smart move right about now. If anyone can find the diamond in the rough in round two, it’s Giants GM Jerry Reese. I know it may seem odd that I would use the first two picks on offense, when the defense was so decimated by injuries this season. But The offensive line is what allows the offensive machine to get into sync and the RB situation was illuminated when both Jacobs and Bradshaw missed time. Ware and the rookie Scott were the only two options remaining and the Giants rushing attack is ranked at the very bottom of the list. The numbers simply don’t lie.

I honestly would not be surprised to see Big Blue draft a OL, RB or LB in round one. I’ve narrowed it down to those three positions. Now things can certainly change with transactions and trades as the draft gets closer. So this is strictly a pre-pre-pre-draft analysis for our readers. I think when the team gets back all of those injured players and you see them on the field, what I’m saying now, will make more sense. The G-Men are stacked at a bunch of positions but it has been so long since fans have seen these guys play together, they actually forget the squad. I wouldn’t mind seeing them bring back the Andrews brothers either, Shawn and Stacy as a real insurance policy for the offensive line.

These are my early draft assessments for the New York Giants. I will list the Giants area of need and show seven rounds by position. You are all welcome to write your own in the comment area and if you know of specific names, that is even better. I love checking out players that our readers inform us about. Remember these are just my opinions, so don’t rip my head off if you disagree with me. I’ve added a few player names for you to check out on your own, name and college.

12/22/11 Christmas DAC Day 22, Ring of Honor

December 22, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants added a few players to the Ring of Honor this year. These new members bring the total up to 35 former players honored forever. I like when teams do these kind of things for their star players. It builds on tradition for the fans and connects generations. I took a tour of the old Yankee stadium, the year before it was demolished and replaced by the new Yankee stadium.

Monument Park in the Bronx was a unique experience and I enjoyed being able to see how the Yankees set the bar when it comes to honoring the greats of the game. As a fan, I appreciate the classy way the Giants waited almost 100 years to do this but the time has come. I’d like to see John Mara, Tom Coughlin, Ernie Accorsi, Eli Manning, Rodney Hampton, Charles Way, Jeff Feagles, Jason Sehorn, Osi Umenyiora, David Tyree, Shaun O’Hara, Rich Seubert, Keith Hamilton, Chris Snee, Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs and a few other players added to the Ring of Honor one day.

DAC Fact

The Giants have 35 former players inducted into their Ring of Honor. The G-Men have always been about business and they cultivate a team first attitude. That is why there are no distractions such as cheerleaders. Yes, we all love cheerleaders and they have been a part of the game since pee-wee football but at the professional level, they do nothing to help win football games. The Giants remain one of the few teams to play without cheerleaders. Creating a Ring of Honor is a big move for Big Blue. They normally shy away from acknowledging individual achievements but I agree with the move. With such a storied history, remaining silently humble was a disservice to the fans. The rich history was too much to ignore and they made the right decision to shine a light on it.

What are you feelings about the Giants Ring of Honor? Would you change anything about them?

12/21/11 Christmas DAC Day 21, The Playoffs

December 21, 2011

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans and Happy Holidays! I apologize to the die hard Giants fans who already know what I’m going to say in this article, when I discuss the playoffs. You know the scenario but for those of you who need to catch up on the information highway, the Giants need to win both of their final two games of the 2011 season. Both of these teams, the Jets and Cowboys, are formidable opponents. Both of these games will be played at MetLife stadium. The Giants have no choice but win these games or face a third straight year without a postseason game. Nobody wants to see that happen and the reason for all of this misfortune is quite clear, the injuries.

The Giants simply need to win the next two games, hope for some of their players to return from injury and give round one everything they’ve got. We know that QB Eli Manning will do his part and make things happen. I’m more concerned with the defensive personnel then I am with the offense. Is it crazy to think that GM Jerry Reese would bring in a veteran defensive back for the playoff run? Anything is possible I guess. It all comes back to the fact that Big Blue needs to win the next two games. If they do win the next two games, one still has to wonder how deep they can go in the playoffs with the 28th ranked defense.

If the Giants somehow miss the playoffs for a third straight year, what happens? You can’t realistically fire coaches over players getting injured, that just isn’t fair. The pressure from fans might too be too much to overcome for the Giants front office this year, I believe changes are inevitable and will occur swiftly following the end of the season. I also think the G-Men have a great shot at making the playoffs still this year. Two huge games back to back to end 2011, the year of the heart attack and lock out. I cannot imagine this crazy year ending any other way.

DAC Fact

I told you about the New York Giants making the playoffs dozens of times in their history. But do you know how many playoff wins they have? The overall postseason record is 20-24 and the Giants have a 5-4 playoff record since 2000. They are also 1-1 for Super Bowl appearances during that period of time. The lost to the Baltimore Ravens in 2000 and beat the undefeated New England Patriots in SBXLII. The longest drought in Giants history for missing the playoffs is 17 straight seasons from 1964-1980 Let’s hope that ancient history, stays ancient history, and never repeats itself again.

Will the New York Giants make the playoffs this year? Yes or no? What do you think?

12/20/11 Christmas DAC Day 20, GM Jerry Reese

December 20, 2011

NEW YORK – I thought our readers would like to discuss Giants GM Jerry Reese for a moment. Let me start by saying that I am a fan of Jerry Reese. Reese has done an outstanding job of stacking this team with talent. The amount of injuries endured by Big Blue are extraordinary. Three straight years of IR list members and IR list candidates. The most frustrating thing about being a Giants fan the past few years is the injuries. If you bring up the injuries to other fans, you are perceived as complaining, with them saying “it’s part of the game” or something like that. They can say whatever they want but true blue fans know the real deal and it’s disgusting. It’s almost worse then losing out right by better competition. Growing pains will pay off next year.

Jerry Reese has made all of the right moves with the situations he was given and made the right choices at that time in my opinion. Looking back some have been brilliant like bringing in LB Michael Boley, S Antrel Rolle and drafting DE Jason Pierre-Paul and signing punter Steve Weatherford. Who could argue with him taking rookie CB Prince Amukamara in the first round of Aprils NFL draft? Nobody said anything because it was the smart thing to do. Amukamara is going to get better, mark my words. He also took a shot on drafting a rookie RB named Ahmad Bradshaw who turned out alright. Bradshaw is a beast and has kept out of trouble off the field.

Let’s not forget Reese drafting WR Hakeem Nicks and WR Mario Manningham. Were some of his draft picks a bust or did some signings not work out? Of course some of them didn’t work out, that is part of the business, things happen that are out of your control. But nobody can deny his success in the draft game where some consider him a guru. There are other fans who do not like Jerry Reese and I invite those to make their points in the comment area. I am interested in hearing your point of view. Reese has five years under his belt now and should be evaluated by fans. Congrats on five years by the way Jerry!

I’m sure that Mr. Reese has February 2, 2014 marked on his calendar with a circle around it. Getting the Giants into a Super Bowl to be played in MetLife stadium has to be the goal. If the Giants end up playing the Jets, I would think the game is fixed. A subway series for Big Blue and Gang Green? Are you kidding me? The Battle for Broadway? The Times Square Scuffle? The Turnpike Fight? The Block Party? The Five Borough Brawl? The Rumble in Rutherford? Are you kidding me? It would be the game of the century with the Giants winning of course, 47-31.

DAC Fact

Since taking over as Giants GM from Ernie Accorsi back in 2007, the G-men have had 50/50 postseason success. The first two years were good and the G-Men went to the playoffs both years. The past two years were clearly not very good because they missed the playoffs. The Giants still went 10-6 in 2010 which is considered a very good season. They won the Super Bowl in Reese’s first year as General Manager in 2007 and finished with a 10-6 record. They finished 12-4 in 2008 and 8-8 in 2009. This year in 2011, the best they can hope to finish is 9-7 if they win the last two games against the Jets and Cowboys, both at MetLife stadium. The Giants are currently 7-7 and have never had a losing season under Reese’s watch.

How would you grade GM Jerry Reese on his performance since taking over the GM position from Ernie Accorsi on January 16, 2007?

12/19/11 Christmas DAC Day 19, Giants Stadium

December 19, 2011

NEW YORK – I could not let a whole advent calendar pass without giving a day to our beloved Giants stadium, with the deep blue sign and GIANTS STADIUM proudly displayed across the face of the stadium. Yes, the new stadium is up and has been for a little while now, one year. The old name of New Meadowlands stadium was replaced by MetLife stadium when the Giants and Jets agreed to sell the naming rights. Many fans were hoping to see JetBlue stadium or Green Giant stadium but they weren’t meant to be. The billion dollar behemoth had been built and needed a name. Yankee fans weren’t too pleased with MetLife stadium and at least half of all Yankee fans are New York Giants fans. What can you do?

But before the ‘House that PSL’s Built’ was erected ($1.6 billion dollars), there was Giants stadium. Big and Blue and home to millions of Giants fans. Arriving to a game a couple of hours early meant you were tailgating and there is nothing more fun then tailgating with your friends before a big game at your home stadium. The sea of blue is what I call it in the parking lot. You’ve got people from all over the tri-state area in that parking lot. If you are going to the game with noobs or adults who dislike the elements of weather involved with tailgating, you can go to a local bar for your pre-game hang out for a bite to eat and a drink. Personally, I think the best bar around Giants stadium is Red’s Bar. I have been going there for years and it serves as a solid meet up spot for you and your friends. They even have the infamous Giants shuttle to the parking lot area. A diabolical looking blue mini school bus designed to look like a Giants version of the ‘Slap Shot’ bus. If you haven’t been to Red’s Bar you should stop by before or after a game, they are good people in there.

DAC Fact

Did you know the old Giants stadium was opened on October 10, 1976? It had a maximum seating capacity of 80,242 fans. The first ever Giants game to be played there was on September 18, 1977 and it was a stadium born into winning with a victory over the Washington Redskins 20-17. Besides Yankee stadium, I have been to that old stadium more then any other sports complex on the planet and it will be missed. The old Giants stadium was demolished in 2010. There will be a whole generation of kids who will never know that old stadium except through our stories and modern libraries of information on the internet. I’m glad I was able to tour both the old Giants stadium and old Yankee stadium before they were demolished. On February 2, 2014, MetLife stadium will host Super Bowl XLVIII for the first ever New York Super Bowl. Will it snow?

After losing badly to the Redskins, the Giants play the Jets next on Christmas Eve at 1:00 PM EST. This is a must win game.

What is your favorite memory from the old Giants stadium?

12/14/11 Christmas DAC Day 14, The NYG Offense

December 14, 2011

NEW YORK – It feels very strange to talk about how good the Giants offense is. Not because I haven’t seen stellar offense from Big Blue in the past but because New York is known for it’s defense. The truth is the Giants offense is very good. The rushing game has been poor all year but the passing game has flourished. QB Eli Manning deserves to go to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. WR Victor Cruz deserves to go to the Pro Bowl. WR Hakeem Nicks deserves to go to the Pro Bowl. TE Jake Ballard deserves to go to the Pro Bowl. A couple of offensive linemen deserve to go to Hawaii. I would include WR Mario Manningham here but he missed a few games with injury (I know Nicks did too) and it effected his overall numbers. A lot of guys are stepping up in 2011 and no one is benefitting from that more then Eli Manning.

I’m not sure what happened to the Giants running game but it has been non-existent for most of 2011. Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs have both missed time due to injuries. The Giants offensive line got off to a shaky start but have been doing a much better job, despite all of the injuries like LT William Beatty and C David Bass missing considerable time. The Giants have shut out opposing defenses a few times and not allowed a single sack. The Giants and GM Jerry Reese should heed my warning, please draft an offensive lineman in the first round of the 2012 draft.  I was certain the G-Men would take a Center or Linebacker in round one last year but when CB Prince Amukamara fell to our pick, it was clear he was the best available at a skill position.

The Giants will need to protect franchise QB Eli Manning who has one heck of an NFL Iron Man Streak going on, third in NFL history as of today (behind only Brett Favre and Peyton Manning). Prior to the Cowboys game on Sunday night, they showed a graphic of all four NFC East teams and the QB’s they’ve started since Eli Manning was drafted. I think two teams had used seven different QB’s and one team had used eight during the time Manning has been the leader of New York’s offense. That really says something and it is about time these media guys and girls give Manning his due. Easy Eli has already eclipsed the 4,000 yard passing mark for a third consecutive year and it looks like 2011 is going to end up being a career year for him.

Rookie RB Da’Rel Scott has shown flashes of greatness and his speed is undeniable. I expect great things from this young man in the future. Rookie WR Jerrel Jernigan has also had a few opportunities to show what he can do. It is difficult to get playing time right now because the G-Men are so deep at the WR position. RB DJ Ware has helped out and done well when needed. TE Travis Beckum has been getting a little more playing time now, while TE Bear Pascoe is primarily a blocker and bulldozer up the middle. The Giants offense is the real deal and has been carrying this team all year.

DAC Fact

The Giants will play Wellington Mara’s favorite rivalry, the Washington Redskins this weekend (12/18/11 at 1:00 PM EST at MetLife stadium). The Giants lead the all-time series 91-64-4. Did you know the Giants versus Redskins rivalry is the oldest in the NFC East and one of the oldest in the NFL?

What do you think about the Giants offensive performance so far this year?

Big Blue Adding Five to Ring of Honor on Sunday

November 30, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants have announced that they will be adding five players to the Ring of Honor on Sunday. This tells me that MetLife stadium will be buzzing with the ghosts of old and the stadium should be electric. The Giants plan on inducting LB Carl Banks, TE Mark Bavaro, RB Alex Webster, LB Brad Van Pelt and P Dave Jennings. On behalf of the nygreporter, I would like to say congratulations men, this is a well deserved honor for some of the biggest names in Giants history.

I have had the pleasure of seeing some of these guys play and meeting a couple of them (Bavaro, Van Pelt) let me tell you, Mark Bavaro and Carl Banks are two of the best Giants of all time. They must have saved inducting them for this year in order to generate interest using high profile stars, spreading them out if you will instead of including them all in the initial 30 honorees. It makes sense but to the true blue Giants fan, there is no need for these types of things, we will be there no matter who is inducted. Once a Giant, always a Giant! Let’s take a look at this group of men and congratulate them.

2011 New York Giants ‘Ring of Honor’ Inductees

1. LB Carl Banks – All-time New York Giants legend, 2-time Super Bowl Champion, Pro Bowl selection.

2. TE Mark Bavaro – All-time New York Giants legend, 2-time Super Bowl Champion, 2-time Pro Bowl selection.

3. RB Alex Webster – Webster was born in Kearny, New Jersey, the local product was a 2-time Pro Bowl selection.

4. LB Brad Van Pelt – Van Pelt was born in Michigan and died there in 2009. A fan favorite, he was a 5-time Pro Bowl selection.

5. P Dave Jennings – Jennings was born in New York and spent 10 years with the G-Men. He is a 4-time Pro Bowl selection.

SIDENOTE: I am proud to announce that nygreporter will eclipse the 50,000 mark for unique visitors this weekend. I would like to say thank you to all of our readers!

What do you think about the five players the Giants will induct into the Ring of Honor in Sunday?

NFL Week 11: Giants vs. Eagles, Game Notes

November 21, 2011

NEW YORK – The Giants played host to the Eagles on Sunday Night Football in part two of their annual clash. The “Dream Team” was 3-6 and almost mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. That was the reality of their situation until they beat the Giants 17-10 and improved to 4-6 on the year. Both teams were missing key players like NYG-RB Bradshaw, NYG-LB Boley, PHI-QB Vick and PHI-WR Maclin who were all ruled out prior to game) and did the best they could depth wise. Another handful of Giants players left the game, like RB DJ Ware who left with a concussion and OL Chris Snee who needed an early IV. In one of the rare times that my final score prediction is way off, I’ll admit I was completely wrong when I said the final score would be Giants 38 – Eagles 21 with the G-Men winning by 15.

These two teams had a brawl last night. QB Eli Manning was one of the many players who got roughed up more then once and players had to stay on their toes or get stomped. These teams were fighting hard out there and literal fights were breaking out on the field all night. DeSean Jackson is a classless rube who doesn’t seem to realize that video of his actions will remain forever. The fact that he continues to be so immature is not only pitiful, it also hurts his team. Watching the game last night is the closest thing to a sad opera (the Luciano Pavarotti kind, not the soap kind) that I can think of. The G-men are missing players and more are going down out there, all while they try but cannot seem to move the ball very well. The running game was atrocious most of the game and wide receivers could not seem to pull down sure catches bouncing off their hands. Hey, everyone misses catches sometimes but the problem with this group of misses, is the timing. All of them happening at once like that feels overwhelming. All of this leading up to the grand finale of losing the game.

The Eagles took a 10-3 lead into the locker room at halftime and came out feeling more motivated then when they went inside. And although everyone was sure a 4th quarter comeback would be pulled off by QB Eli Manning, far too many penalties (5/39), sacks (3) and turnovers (2) made sure that would never happen. The second half played out like watching paint dry. Slow and sloppy play made me feel like I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone. The game ended with Giants stadium mostly silent and fans upset after back to back losses.

Let’s take a look at some of my notes from the game.

QB Eli Manning – Manning did everything he could to try and win this game. There were a lot of dropped passes and he finished with 264 yards 1 TD and 1 INT.

RB Brandon Jacobs – Jacobs was trying to run hard but the Eagles employed a swarm policy on Brandon. He finished with 21 yards 0 TD’s.

WR Hakeem Nicks – Nicks had a good game and finished with 69 yards, Not bad considering who was covering him.

DE Osi Umenyiora – Osi told the press he will see Eagles RB LeSean McCoy on the field in regards to some preseason trash talk. There is no doubt that McCoy is hurting today.

CB Prince Amukamara – The rookie CB finally made his debut and did not disappoint finishing 2nd on the team in tackles and grabbing 1 INT. Congrats Prince!

LB Mathias Kiwanuka – Kiwi went beast on the Eagles and had his best game of the year. He led all tacklers on defense.

DE Justin Tuck – Tuck was battling all night and had a good game. He put some serious pressure on QB Vince Young.

DT Chris Canty – ‘The Thing’ as I like to call him, Canty had a good game. He has played well in the past two or three games in a row now.

WR Mario Manningham – Super Mario had a very quiet night, finishing with one catch for four yards.

S Antrel Rolle – The final stats don’t show it but Rolle was making some serious plays out there.

LB Jacquian Williams – The rookie LB had another solid game. I am very impressed with this young man.

WR Victor Cruz – The red hot NJ native finished first on the team in receiving with 128 yards and 1 TD. Vic is for real.

DE Jason Pierre-Paul – JPP looked absolutely slaphappy at times out there while creating havoc for the Eagles offensive line. He also had 1 sack.

TE Jake Ballard – Ballard had a very quiet game and finished with 13 yards 0 TD’s.

CB Aaron Ross – Ross continues to make INT’s by getting another against the Eagles. He has tied his career high (4) for INT’s in a season.

S Kenny Phillips – Phillips says don’t forget about me, grabbing 1 INT of his own. Phillips is really playing on another level this year.

LB Mark Herzlich – Mark had a good debut game and was fired up for getting the start. He has a good football sense and seems to always be around the ball.

S Deon Grant – Grant is a fan favorite now. He had another solid game and brought some toughness to each play. Let him retire a Giant one day.

RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw missed another game this week with a bad wheel but could be back in time for the Saints game. The Giants need AB bad.

LB Michael Boley – Mike was injured during the 49ers game and had to miss this week versus the Eagles. The G-Men really need Boley back ASAP.

P Steve Weatherford – Giants fans have fallen completely in love with the Weatherman (I’m Ron Burgundy voice) and calling him MVP over the web.

K Lawrence Tynes – Tynes continued his mediocre season by kicking 1 FG and 1 extra point. Still, he is making his kicks.

Giants Offense – The Giants offense did all it could with the players they had. They really miss RB Ahmad Bradshaw in New York and him back soon.

Giants Defense – Even with getting all of the turnovers, the Giants defense allowed QB Vince Young to look like the college Vince Young, not the NFL Vince Young. They lose a heartbreaker and hard fought game.

Giants Special Teams – It’s time to look for a 10 year kicker and All Pro return man. Keep Weatherford permanently. SMH!

What did you think of the Giants performance against the Eagles? Will the G-Men win the NFC East?

Eli Manning Using Brains to Cruz through Elite Player Rankings

November 17, 2011

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, I would hate myself down the road if I didn’t write something about QB Eli Manning and Victor Cruz, right now. The numbers simply don’t lie. Manning is an elite NFL QB, period. Add to that, WR Victor Cruz is emerging as an elite NFL WR in his own right. I won’t use words like staggering or gargantuan (I so very rarely get to use that word in a sentence, thanks QT) but I will say that both Manning and Cruz have been steady and strong, quietly climbing up the rankings and everyone can see it now. They have proven to be resilient, just like this 2011 Giants team.

Let me give you a breakdown of Cruz, look at what he has done this year versus established and elite NFL WR’s. The passing game is going so well that the running game has suffered a bit.

Giants WR Victor Cruz is ranked 8th in the NFL for receiving yards. Who are some of the elite players at WR that are below Cruz? Well let’s see, there is WR Roddy White, WR Reggie Wayne, WR Dwayne Bowe, WR Vincent Jackson, WR Marques Colston, WR Anquan Boldin, WR DeSean Jackson and the list goes on and on, including a guy you may know named Hakeem Nicks. He is also tied for 5th place in the NFL for most WR TD’s (4). You have to remember that Cruz is doing this from a No.2 or No.3 WR position. Those other WR’s mentioned are No.1 WR’s including Nicks, who is the Giants No.1 WR. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t see this coming because I did. I noticed Cruz immediately in training camp WR Victor Cruz, No.80 – photographs This was in 2010 up at the University of  Albany. The New Jersey native just had something, he was out there catching everything and making plays. I have been watching Cruz from that moment until now.

He is playing so well, that he has become relevant in fantasy football. Now that is really saying something and a testament to quality performances on the field. On top of everything, he is a great guy off the field. What more could you ask for from a young and talented wide receiver? Hate it or love it, Victor Cruz is playing on an elite level right now. The numbers don’t lie and he should be voted into the Pro Bowl. I can’t wait to see what he does against the Eagles on Sunday night.

Cruz was at Juliet Supper Club in New York this week when a shooting occurred and killed one man in the place. Cruz was with a few other Giants players celebrating a birthday (no Giants were injured). I think that put things in perspective for him about going out and seeing how your life can change in a moment. Look at WR Plaxico Burress as a perfect example. Right or wrong, Burress went to jail for a few years and that’s the way that story ends. The wrong place at the wrong time can even get you killed. Players cannot stop living their lives over these occurrences but it should keep them on their toes and making smart choices.

QB Eli Manning won’t win the NFL MVP like I’ve said before, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers seems a lock for that this year. But Manning does belong in the Pro Bowl and I hope that puts the story to bed. Do another Top 100 player list and see where Manning is ranked this year. He is playing very smart football right now and players like WR Victor Cruz and TE Jake Ballard are benefitting from his evolution. WR Hakeem Nicks and WR Mario Manningham are two more dangerous weapons that Manning has in the mix. The Iron man is simply phenomenal and I’m glad he is our quarterback. You can tell by this TV promo for NBC Sunday Night Football (11/20/11 at 8:20 PM EST) that Giants QB Eli Manning is not playing around this year and has grown into a man who commands respect. The Giants play the Eagles in what should be a classic divisional battle, between two teams that really dislike each other. Get ready for some action Sunday Night!
