Are you beginning to get excited Giants fans? We are now only 4 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. All of our research and investigation of players will soon be over and we will finally know who the G-men had on their radar all along. Big Blue had a busy week last week, they signed a few players and seem to be just about ready to enter the War Room and lock it down. I anticipate one or two more moves, on the teams behalf, before the draft this Thursday night. I don’t think it will be anything major but you never know with Jerry Reese. I am still not counting out a possible trade on draft day but it seems unlikely given Reese’s history of holding onto his picks.
In case you haven’t read the previous “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” articles, what we are doing is comparing Ernie Accorsi’s last three years as GM with the team and Jerry Reese’s first three years as the new GM. We are not comparing these men to find a winner but rather taking a look at the past six years and what rewards have come from their work. There are no winners in these comparisons, we are just doing something entertaining for the fans leading up to draft day.
OK Giants fans, let’s take a look at the New York Giants third round picks from the past six years.

This is a difficult round for me to decide between Accorsi and Reese but once again, I have to give it to Reese. I’m giving Reese the nod in round three because he drafted double the players and all of them are still on the team. I also like the fact that he was able to get two picks in round three last year. Defensive end Justin Tuck is a huge pick of course and we need to give Accorsi credit for scouting him. I never envisioned the Giants as a team that did a lot of deals during the draft. But after seeing how many picks are absent from Accorsi’s final three drafts, is really opening my eyes. Until I laid everything out like this, I had no idea that the team had been consistently giving up that many picks.
Another thing that stands out in my mind is exactly how young the G-men are. The New York Giants are a very young football team and about to get even younger next weekend. If you take a look at our previous articles, where we take a look at every position on the team, you will see that a lot of those positions are extremely young. A player with only four or five years of NFL experience is considered the veteran in those areas.

The New York Giants re-signed two players yesterday, as they continue to make roster moves just five days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. WR Domenik Hixon was signed to a one year deal and will be entering his fourth season as a New York Giant, after two years with the Denver Broncos. Hixon has been asked to do a little bit of everything, including returning kick offs and punts on special teams. He is a tall receiver at 6’2″ but never blossomed into the threat the Giants envisioned when they brought him on board. That’s not to say that Hixon can’t flourish later in his career but to this point, he hasn’t done much at the WR position. The crowded wide receiver group will make it even more difficult for him to crack the starting lineup. At this point, it would take an injury or two for Hixon to become a starter. WR Steve Smith, WR Hakeem Nicks and WR Mario Manningham appear to be the top three guys on the team.
DJ Johnson is a young cornerback who played his first season in New York in 2009. We don’t know much about this guy yet but apparently the team thinks he is worth holding onto as an exclusive rights free agent. Johnson is also a big guy at 6’2″ 200 pounds and could provide some needed depth at the cornerback position. CB Aaron Ross remains a huge question mark for the CB group. Terrell Thomas has become a force at the cornerback position and could earn a Pro Bowl spot this year if he continues his outstanding play. DJ Johnson has no shot at cracking the starting lineup this season but he certainly will be a welcome addition to the cornerback group. I hope that he can prove me wrong by becoming a terrific player quickly and making Big Blue even stronger but it’s unlikely.

The 2010 NFL Draft is now 5 days away Giants fans. Today, we take a look at the round four picks from the past six years. So far, Jerry Reese has proven to be extremely resourceful by garnering the nod for rounds 5,6 and 7 over Accorsi. Will he be able to run the table and grab round four as well? True Giants fans know that comparing both of these men is like comparing Michael Jordan to Magic Johnson. Opinions may vary on who was the better player but all will agree that both were great. Both are great in their own right and we are merely comparing picks here and not the men.
Let’s take a look at the New York Giants fourth round picks for the past six years.

Finally, we have a round that goes to Ernie Accorsi and a round where Accorsi has all of his picks. There should be no doubt at all that round four has been a monster for Accorsi in his final three years as the New York Giants general manager. In my opinion, all three of his picks are winners. Reggie Torbor is a player that I have always liked, Brandon Jacobs is the starting running back for the G-men and Barry Cofield is solid as a rock in his defensive tackle position. I like all three of these players and all have proven to be wise choices. Jerry Reese didn’t do bad either. All three of the players Reese picked are still on the team. DeOssie and Kehl have had more opportunities to play then Brown (Brown was injured for his entire rookie season in 2009) but Brown has some serious potential to grow and flourish.

Here we are on day two of the “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” segment. We will be examining the past six years of drafts by round. A different set of rounds everyday for seven days. The legendary Ernie Accorsi will be compared to the young buck (I say that with respect) Jerry Reese. The 2010 NFL Draft is now exactly one week away. What will the Giants do? Could they still grab a player via free agency? Will there be a major trade announced? It’s beginning to get very interesting, the closer we get to draft day.
Now, let’s take a look at the New York Giants round six picks for the past six years.

After taking a look at the history above, I think it is fair to say that round six is a push between these two legends. OT Adam Koets is the only player out of them all that may have any promise of making a living in New York. Robert Henderson would fall to second on the list if I had to choose. It is nothing against the other players that the G-men drafted, it’s just the nature of the business to be somewhat judgmental. The one pattern that I am picking up on thus far, is that Ernie Acorsi seems to be missing picks quite a bit. No doubt from wheeling and dealing but I find it interesting that while Accorsi has given up a pick in each round so far, Reese continues to be stingy with his draft picks and has retained them all. Both of these men are experts at what they do and trying to figure out which system is best is ludicrous. A blend of both styles might be the best thing for New York.

The 2010 NFL Draft is a mere 8 days away now and will be held on Thursday 4-22-10. I thought we could do something interesting leading up to the 2010 NFL Draft. I plan on writing about a different round every day for the next seven days, leading us right up to two days before the 2010 draft on Tuesday 4-20-10.
What I am going to do is take the last three drafts, all of which were done by Jerry Reese, and the last three drafts before that, done by Ernie Accorsi and compare them. That means we are taking a look back at the previous six draft years. I think you will find it very interesting how well these two men stack up with their drafting prowess. You will be getting three actual draft results each, from Jerry Reese and Ernie Accorsi, plus my position predictions by round, for the 2010 Draft. We will use a countdown style beginning with the number seven and ending with the number one.
On Wednesday 4-21-10, NYGReporter will do our “The Day Before: The 2010 Draft” segment and then LIVE coverage throughout the three day draft weekend.
So without any more delay, let’s take a look at how Jerry Reese and Ernie Accorsi drafted in round seven for the past six years.

Based on the information and history we have to examine, I would have to give the round seven edge to Jerry Reese for grabbing Ahmad Bradshaw in the seventh round. He also got Michael Johnson in the very same round and draft. Ahmad Bradshaw and Michael Johnson are the only two, round seven picks, that have remained on the team since 2004. Plus, Reese was able to hold onto all of his draft picks.
What do you think about the round seven comparisons? Did Jerry Reese win this round in your mind as well? Even though this isn’t a competition between two guys that we all love, it’s still fun to compare. I’m just trying to put an interesting twist on some pre-draft analysis.

The New York Giants signed third year, RFA OT Guy Whimper, to a deal today. This is a smart move on the teams behalf. They also cut journeyman DT Anthony Bryant before the weekend, which makes me look at the DT position as needing more work now, then the offensive line does. Bryant is a big guy at 6’3″ 337 pounds and has played on four different teams in his four year NFL career. This could move the defensive tackle position above a mid round offensive lineman. There are only five defensive tackles on the current New York Giants roster. Do you think this will alter the Giants draft intentions at all? Is the defensive tackle position in need of more help? DT Barry Cofield and DT Jay Alford have proven themselves to be playmakers. It is time for Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard to step up in 2010. I think DT Fred Robbins could have stayed on the Giants for another year but I wish him well with the Rams.
Offensive tackle Guy Whimper, has been on the field in a limited capacity, on different occasions and done well. The team must certainly believe they are better off with him, then without him. I think it is a good idea to keep guys who know the system and what to expect. I am not leaving out the possibility of the Giants using their 15th pick on either the OL or LB positions. At this point, I’m going to have to throw DT into the mix and round out my top three possibilities by position in this years draft. The three, in order are LB, OL, DT. I’m glad that Whimper will be with the team in 2010.

OK, here is the scenario. If you were Jerry Reese and learned that Kenny Phillips might miss the first 4-6 weeks of the NFL season, would you trade up and grab the future all-pro safety Eric Berry? Has the Antrel Rolle signing and obvious potential of Kenny Phillips when healthy made us focus elsewhere? If Antrel Rolle is clearly one starter, then who would the other one be? Michael Johnson? Deon Grant? Do you think it is a dead issue to consider the lethality of a healthy Phillips, Rolle and Berry. When all three are playing at an optimum level, it could change how backfields are used in NFL schemes. The Bermuda Triangle backfield.
Drafting Berry would let the Giants know one thing for certain, they would not need to do anything with the safety position for five or six years minimum. That’s not bad when you think about it. Eric Berry is clearly the best safety in the draft and he also had a very crisp and clean combine workout. It is not likely that the team would pursue this but I was very impressed with this young man. I think he has a very bright future in the NFL. I have Eric Berry going to Tampa Bay with the third overall pick. The last time I felt there was a player the G-men might move up for was Michael Crabtree. Clearly, that did not work out for the Giants or 49ers. I hope he has a very good year and proves the doubters wrong in 2010.
What do you think about the Giants grabbing yet another safety before the 2010 season? Will it or could it ever happen? If not Berry, then possibly safety Earl Thomas or Taylor Mays at pick fifteen? Maybe Chad Jones in round two? Is the safety discussion one that should be over with by now? What are your thoughts?

The NYG Reporter will be doing LIVE updates of draft picks, during all three days of the draft. I will leave a time/date list below. If you can’t watch it on television, feel free to stop by and check out the updates. You can also subscribe to our rss feed to get automatic updates. Be sure to stop by and leave your comments about your thoughts on who the team chooses. The NFL has decided to expand the 2010 NFL Draft over a three day period instead of the traditional two day weekend. I don’t like this change at all. Personally, I understand that they are experimenting with new ideas but the two day NFL Draft was torture enough for true fans. Expanding it to a three day event is just too much. I like the Pro Bowl being played before the Super Bowl but think it should always be held in Hawaii. So some of the new ideas work and some don’t. The three day draft will be short lived.

The following notes are random bits of current information on the New York Giants. The voluntary workouts will soon be mandatory training camp, quickly following the NFL Draft. I haven’t heard any new reports on injured players or how their rehab is going. It’s good news, that there isn’t anything negative to report, if you know what I mean? Sometimes there will be a question asked in the Notes articles, if you know the answer in the comment section. Feel free to leave a comment about anything new that gets left out as well. BREAKING NEWS posts are always Welcome here at the NYG Reporter. Sign up to become a member if you haven’t already. You don’t need to be a member to leave a comment though, so let us hear what you think.
Here is a small list of current happenings in the New York Giants world and the NFL.
1. The New Meadowlands stadium (old Giants Stadium) finally opened to the public today on April 10, 2010. The new era officially begins.
2. There are now only 12 days until the 2010 NFL Draft (April 22, 2010). The Giants still have their first round, N0. 15 pick.
3. The Giants brought in an offensive lineman from Pittsburgh to test out. It seems the Giants might be looking at taking an offensive lineman in the first round if no coveted linebackers are available.
4. The entire NFL schedule should be released soon by the NFL. The Giants open the preseason playing the Jets, on 8-16-10 8PM, Monday Night Football. Check the “Schedule” tab for future info.
5. Question for members, when do the Giants game tickets officially go on sale? Date/Time? Kyle should know since he has season tickets.
6. Former Giants RB Tiki Barber, continues to get hammered by the New York media for leaving his pregnant wife (twins) of eleven years.
7. Who would you start at middle linebacker? Chase Blackburn, Jonathan Goff, Kenny Ingram or Clint Sintim? I would start LB Blackburn.
8. New York Giants training camp dates/news should be coming from the team soon. Check the “Events” tab for future info. The Giants will hold their training camp in Albany, New York.
9. NFL.com has calculated that the New York Giants will travel a distance of 7,892 miles for regular season games in 2010.

After taking a look at the current New York Giants roster, I believe the team can do well in 2010. They are a young football team that should have some good competition come training camp time. I was surprised at some of the number of players per position. Some of the areas where I thought the G-men were thin, they weren’t. Using the current roster, if it doesn’t change again before the draft, you can begin to see what the team might be thinking since they are so close (12 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft) to getting down to business. The Giants War Room will be rocking and I would not be surprised to see some deals getting done. The G-Men have been very aggressive this off season.
Giants fans are left with more questions then answers. The team has addressed the safety position thoroughly and made some other basic roster moves. Jerry Reese is a man who always has a plan and I am sure he can see the future better then any of us. I’m on the fence currently about drafting either a linebacker or offensive lineman in round one. Linebacker is the bigger need but if the ones they targeted are off the boards, then I would go offensive lineman here. Getting Eli Manning some help during his prime, can only benefit the team long term.
I expect the defense to be better in 2010 without a doubt. They are young and fast and I believe they are going to surprise a lot of teams. I’m excited to see who is going to step up on offense and if the team is ready to invest in another big weapon for Manning. Look for RB Brandon Jacobs to have an improved year and get back to knocking people down, north and south. DE Osi will have some reassuring to do after his 2009 season, by playing his heart out and convincing coaches and fans he wants to stay with the team. WR Steve Smith will prove that 2009 was not a fluke by mimicking his success this season. LB Clint Sintim and WR Ramses Barden should get more playing time and OL William Beatty could be starting by the end of the year.
There are a lot of exciting possibilities in 2010. I expect a real battle at the linebacker position during training camp. I believe that will be the most interesting of them all. Will DE/DT Chris Canty and DT Rocky Bernard make a difference? What do you think about the 2010 New York Giants situation as of today, right now?

1. Backup QB situation. Is Jim Sorgi “game ready”? Is Rhett Bomar the answer?
2. Who will play the Middle linebacker position for Big Blue in 2010?
3. Will the running backs be healthy? Will RB Andre Brown emerge?
4. Will safety Kenny Phillips be healthy and ready to play?
5. How will new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell do in his first year with the team?
6. How will some of the other coaching changes effect the plays on the field?
7. Who will the Giants take with the number one pick in the 2010 NFL Draft?
8. Will CB Aaron Ross be healthy and ready to play mentally?
9. Will K Lawrence Tynes still be on the team for the 2010 season?
10. Will P Jeff Feagles have a better season then in 2009?
11. Will TE’s Kevin Boss and Travis Beckum get more work on the offense?
12. Will WR Hakeem Nicks have a breakout season in 2010?
13. Why are WR Sinorice Moss and RB DJ Ware still on the roster based on their career numbers?
14. Will OL William Beatty be starting at left tackle by the end of the season?
15. Can the New York Giants make it back to the playoffs in 2010?

Are you beginning to get excited Giants fans? We are now only 4 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. All of our research and investigation of players will soon be over and we will finally know who the G-men had on their radar all along. Big Blue had a busy week last week, they signed a few players and seem to be just about ready to enter the War Room and lock it down. I anticipate one or two more moves, on the teams behalf, before the draft this Thursday night. I don’t think it will be anything major but you never know with Jerry Reese. I am still not counting out a possible trade on draft day but it seems unlikely given Reese’s history of holding onto his picks.
