2010 New York Giants: Center and Offensive Guards

This is an area that I feel compelled to discuss. if you take a look at the Official site of the New York Giants, click on the roster tab and investigate, you will find that the Giants have only 4 total players to cover both the Center and Guard positions. This is an area I can see going as high as the number two pick and even a number one spot would not surprise me. I still think the Giants will draft a MLB with the number one pick but if not that, then why not go offensive lineman? It makes sense to bolster this group for Eli manning and the running attack. I have to admit that I had become a bit spoiled with not worrying about the offensive line for so long. This is one of the greatest group of OL guys in Giants history.

Shaun O’Hara is still playing at a high level and drafting a Center in the 2010 NFL Draft would be more of an insurance pick. Someone that can be groomed under O’Hara’s tutelage. The team is going to have to consider the future in this draft without question. There is an injection of youth in every major area of this team and I expect that trend to go in 2010 at the offensive lineman position. I still have faith in this unit as a whole and think they will be fine for another couple of years.

2010 New York Giants: The Cornerbacks

After taking a look at the roster and seeing the current New York Giants cornerbacks, I am convinced that the team will draft a cornerback in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. The Giants currently have seven cornerbacks on the roster. It looks like Terrell Thomas and Corey Webster will get the starters roles. Aaron Ross has to return from an injury plagues 2009 season that limited him to very few games. Ross has all-pro potential but now finds himself in a position of having to prove himself again. It will be interesting to see how he responds.

After the starters and immediate backups, it gets a little foggy to me. This leads me to believe it does the same for the coaches and I am confident this will translate into a top three pick in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft. Bruce Johnson seems to be the best of the remaining bunch and I look for him to have an improved season. I remember Courtney Brown from his draft day and had him targeted as a possible Giants pick that year. He will have to live up to his potential and make a name for himself. The CB area was a major concern during the 2009 season. It was second place, only to the safety position as far as need this year. This is an area that hasn’t fallen off of my radar and I think Jerry Reese will grab a real talent by round three.

New DC Perry Fewell is a defensive back guy. He is going to change things for the Giants and make them a formidable unit for opposing Quarterbacks. The expectations on Fewell this year are pretty high from all of the street chatter I hear. Everyone knows that the DB’s are Perry Fewell’s area of expertise and expect that group to have an overnight improvement.

What do you think of the current New York Giants cornerback situation and who do you see as a potential 3rd round draft pick at the CB position for BIg Blue?

2010 New York Giants: The Defensive Tackles

After taking a look at the defensive tackle position today, I am convinced that the New York Giants will take a DT by the 5th pick of this years NFL Draft. The Giants currently have six defensive tackles. The two that I see starting by the beginning of the 2010 season are Barry Cofield and Chris Canty as the starters. Jay Alford, is a more then capable (could start on most teams) backup and fill in. Alford is followed by Rocky Bernard who has something to prove to his fans and the team. This is a make or break year for Bernard in New York and I hope he does well. I don’t know much about the other two, Anthony Bryant and the rookie Dwayne Hendricks. They are both young DT’s and will remain on the team if the coaches see something.

The question marks here are simple. Will Chris Canty live up to his potential in New York and become a legend? or will he play half the year and sit half the year injured? Only time will tell. I am rooting for him to do well because without his part of the puzzle completed, the rest might be in for a struggle. Jay Alford can handle his business and slash to the quarterback abruptly. Fans are eager to see how he returns from his season ending injury last year. Rocky Bernard needs to get back to playing football. If all of these guys are healthy and can do their jobs, the Giants will be fine. Bryant and Hendricks will have to make some noise and get recognized before I can say anything about these two young players. Other then Rocky Bernard, with eight years of NFL experience, the rest of the defensive tackles have no more then 5 years of NFL experience. This is also an area where the Giants are getting younger.

In my opinion, the New York Giants will draft a defensive tackle in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. If not, then a DT will be drafted in the fifth round at the latest. I think Bryant and Hendricks are fighting for a fifth spot on the roster, with one of them eventually being cut. I see Rocky Bernard as possible trade material. A lot of fans were very disappointed with Bernard’s first year in New York. What do you think about the current New York Giants defensive tackle situation and who do you see as a possible draft pick at the DT position during the mid-rounds?

2010 New York Giants: The Wide Receivers

I would like to take a look at the New York Giants wide receiver group today. This was an area of great concern last year for many Giants fans before the draft began. General Manager Jerry Reese quickly addressed the situation by drafting WR Hakeem Nicks with the Giants first pick. As it turns out, the wide receiver group was a bright spot on a dark season in 2009. Eli Manning had a career year throwing the ball to this young group of talented receivers and I see no reason why that trend should stop in 2010. I took a look at the roster today and was surprised to see that the team has only seven wide receivers. There isn’t a single New York Giants WR that has more then 5 years of NFL experience. The New York Giants must have one of the youngest and most talented WR groups in the NFL.

The Giants are set with Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks as sure starters but things get a little foggy at the 3rd WR spot. Sinorice Moss has done very little since the team drafted him four years ago and I am surprised he is still on the team. Domenik Hixon has shown flashes of talent but lacks the consistency required to be a full time starter. Derek Hagan is a depth player who rarely sees action on the field. That leaves us with two final wide receivers on the squad, Mario Manningham and Ramses Barden. In my opinion, you have to give Manningham the nod over Barden, simply because he has more experience. Barden might turn out to be a very good NFL player but Manningham already is a very good player. Manningham needs to get a little more coaching and practice on the little things and he will be even more explosive.

It will interesting to see who is on the final roster come September 4, 2010. The two players that need to be concerned are Sinorice Moss and Derek Hagan. I’m not sure if both of these guys will be on the team for the 2010 season. I would not be surprised to see Jerry Reese grab a young wide receiver in the late rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft. Having TE Kevin Boss and TE Travis Beckum thrown into the passing attack allows the wide receivers to be even more proficient. I expect another great year from the New York Giants WR group. I have a strong feeling that this will be WR Hakeem Nicks breakout season.

2010 NFL Draft: New York Giants Part 2

Now that we are 18 days away from round one of the 2010 NFL Draft, I thought we could re-asses the New York Giants and where the team is currently at. There has been some serious activity this off season and Big Blue will have a lot of new faces in the locker room and in the coaches offices. We did a story a few weeks ago (March 11, 2010), breaking down the 2010 NFL Draft and what positions were most needed. Oh my, how things have changed since then. The Giants have brought in some young talent as well as veteran leadership. The recent moves certainly shake up the “position by need” tree and what players could be drafted this month.

I have said that the safety position is our number one need since the 2009 season ended. The G-Men have thoroughly responded to that by bringing in Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant. They also cut safeties Aaron Rouse and CC Brown (good luck to both of them). At one point, I was seriously campaigning for the team to trade up and grab Eric Berry, but now, I no longer feel uneasy about that area of the team. Backup QB David Carr bolted for the 49ers and the Giants responded by signing career backup QB Jim Sorgi. This is an area that might need some tweaking. Sorgi might be a great study partner for Eli Manning but the team will still need a backup QB that can win games. I’m not convinced that Sorgi is the man for that job and I’m not sure if Jerry Reese will address that in the draft. My guess is that he won’t. The Giants released star middle linebacker Antonio Pierce and have yet to fill that leadership role on the team. This to me, is the most blaring need on this squad.

Other moves were made by the team but most of them were re-signings or cutting players who hadn’t made an impact.  From my point of view, the Giants will draft a middle linebacker and offensive lineman with the first two picks, it doesn’t matter which comes first or second, although my money is on them drafting a middle linebacker first. LB Rolando McClain and LB Sean Weatherspoon still top the list of potential draftees.

I will leave my draft predictions below on what order I think the positions will be drafted. Please fell free to do so yourselves in the comment area. I’m not Nostredamus over here and would love to hear all of your opinions.

New York Giants: CC Brown cut, Deon Grant Added

The New York Giants made two other significant moves on April Fool’s Day, they cut safety CC Brown and added veteran safety Deon Grant. Many Giants fans will be partying like it’s 1999 this weekend over Brown being cut because of his poor 2009 campaign. I will continue to say that it was not entirely his fault. The team was asking CC to do things that he was not able to do. He is not a cover safety and the G-men knew that when they brought him on board. The team was devastated by injuries and they tried to fill a hole with this man. There is nothing I can say to deter the Big Blue faithful from hating this guy. All I can say is that I wish CC well where ever he ends up.

Deon Grant is a veteran safety who currently has the 5th longest Iron Man streak going in the NFL at 144 consecutive games started. He is a big guy standing 6’2″ and 215 pounds. He seems to have a very positive outlook on the game and called it “destiny” that he would end up with the Giants. The 31-year old veteran was drafted by the Panthers back in 2000 and has never looked back. He has played for the Carolina Panthers (4 years), Jacksonville Jaguars (3 years) and lastly, the Seattle Seahawks (3 years). This move surprised a lot of Giants fans who thought the team was done with the safety position, after they signed Antrel Rolle to a huge contract. But this move did not surprise me one bit. In fact, this is the exact scenario I envisioned immediately following the 2009 season. Locking down the safety position via free agency, really frees things up for the team for the NFL Draft this month. It completely changes the drafting strategy for 2010. They can now focus on the MLB and the OL positions, the next two important needs on the “to-do” list in my opinion. I would not be surprised to see a MLB and OL at the one and two picks, in any order this year. I also think it’s still a possibility that the team might bring in a MLB via free agency. We will have to wait and see.

New York Giants: Feagles, Boothe re-sign with the team

The New York Giants re-signed two players on this April Fool’s Day (I hope everyone got a laugh from my Eli Manning post earlier in the day, it’s all in good fun lol). This in NOT a joke. Punter Jeff Feagles and Guard Kevin Boothe re-signed with the team today, terms were not disclosed as of yet. This will be Feagles eighth season with the Giants, in a career that began way back in 1988. Feagles is widely known as the best directional punter to ever play the game. The recent rub on his game, has been the fact that his punts have lacked the distance of past years. I am glad we were able to retain his services and I’m curious to see how he responds after having one of the worst seasons of his career. You could do a lot worse then having this future Hall of Famer on your team.

The signing of G Kevin Boothe shows that Jerry Reese is aware of the fact that the team needs to get deeper on the offensive line. Boothe is a serviceable player who can come in as a backup or in certain situations. This will be the native New Yorker’s (he was born in Queens) fourth season with Big Blue, after playing one year with the Raiders back in 2006. I expect Jerry Reese to draft at least one offensive lineman during the 2010 NFL Draft later this month. He may even draft two OL’s, one in the top three picks and one in the bottom three picks. The NFL Draft is about 3 weeks away now and I’m sure all of you Giants fans can’t wait for that. Personally, I can’t wait for the draft to come either.

New York Giants: Voluntary Workouts Going Well

The New York Giants have been back in the stadium for about a week now getting ready for next season. They have been attending the voluntary off season workouts (I use the term voluntary loosely here) in preparation for the 2010 campaign. The official site of the New York Giants had a bunch of videos recently posted there showing brief interviews with players. Everyone seemed very up beat and happy to get back to work. There was a great sense of pride on behalf of the players, who were interviews in the new facilities. The new locker room caught my attention on more then one occasion because it is so much of an upgrade from the old Giants stadium locker room (I had the pleasure of checking out the old locker room before they tore down the old stadium).

The best news I heard from all of the interviews, was the fact that the running backs seem to be doing much better. We talked about the Running back situation a little bit in our previous story called New York Giants: Danny Ware are you? Hearing that kind of positivity straight from the mouths of the players helped me relax. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw in particular, seemed to be ready to get going, almost eager to start the season. These guys play with a lot of pride and you could almost see the enormous chip on their shoulders as they spoke to the reporters. I like that, in fact I think the whole team will be playing with a chip on their shoulders this season. Last year was an embarrassment to the team and something they will surely rectify in 2010.

What will Giants GM Jerry Reese Do?

The internet is exploding with ideas and strategies about how the New York Giants should handle the 2010 NFL Draft. I have heard everything you can imagine thus far on who the G-Men should take with the 15th overall pick in this years draft. The fan favorites seem to lock in on two LB’s, Rolando McClain and Sean Weatherspoon. Some have suggested the Giants take the best available player at the 15 spot, even if that means drafting a defensive end, a position that isn’t really on the Giants “need list”. DT David Price is another name that has floated around for over a month now, well before Fred Robbins left to go to St. Louis. I have even heard some people clamoring for Jerry Reese to draft a running back in the first round.

As for me, I’m not sure what Jerry Reese is going to do. All I can do is look at the team and identify the weak areas where improvement is needed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to diagnose the fact that the Giants need a reliable middle linebacker. This is something that will be addressed one way or another. Everyone has their own list (in order) of team needs based on what they deem is most crucial. If all of the stud LB’s are off the board and it comes down to making a choice between what is left on the board and drafting for need, I would go with drafting another safety. Either Taylor Mays or Earl Thomas with the 1st round pick. I’m still concerned about Kenny Phillips’ health and the reality is we have only 3 safeties on the team, a mistake the Giants made last season that should not be repeated.

I still believe the solution is to get a MLB via free agency, plus the draft but to also bolster our safety position. This is just my opinion. What do you think?

2010 NFL Draft: New York Giants Part 1

Hello Giants fans, I thought we could do something different today and try to predict the Giants draft picks by position and round. Naming player prospects is fine as well, as long as you list the position next to the name. I have been having some talks with my fellow Giants fans about this and opinions vary as always. Of course, we still don’t know if Big Blue is done with the free agency market yet. So far, they have signed S Antrel Rolle and QB Jim Sorgi. There are positions of need to fill, with MLB being the most apparent.

So for now, let’s assume that the G-Men are done with free agency (which I do not believe). Looking at the current roster and taking into consideration the quality of players that remain at each position, let’s try to figure out what the Giants will do on draft day.
