12/14/11 Christmas DAC Day 14, The NYG Offense

NEW YORK – It feels very strange to talk about how good the Giants offense is. Not because I haven’t seen stellar offense from Big Blue in the past but because New York is known for it’s defense. The truth is the Giants offense is very good. The rushing game has been poor all year but the passing game has flourished. QB Eli Manning deserves to go to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. WR Victor Cruz deserves to go to the Pro Bowl. WR Hakeem Nicks deserves to go to the Pro Bowl. TE Jake Ballard deserves to go to the Pro Bowl. A couple of offensive linemen deserve to go to Hawaii. I would include WR Mario Manningham here but he missed a few games with injury (I know Nicks did too) and it effected his overall numbers. A lot of guys are stepping up in 2011 and no one is benefitting from that more then Eli Manning.

I’m not sure what happened to the Giants running game but it has been non-existent for most of 2011. Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs have both missed time due to injuries. The Giants offensive line got off to a shaky start but have been doing a much better job, despite all of the injuries like LT William Beatty and C David Bass missing considerable time. The Giants have shut out opposing defenses a few times and not allowed a single sack. The Giants and GM Jerry Reese should heed my warning, please draft an offensive lineman in the first round of the 2012 draft.  I was certain the G-Men would take a Center or Linebacker in round one last year but when CB Prince Amukamara fell to our pick, it was clear he was the best available at a skill position.

The Giants will need to protect franchise QB Eli Manning who has one heck of an NFL Iron Man Streak going on, third in NFL history as of today (behind only Brett Favre and Peyton Manning). Prior to the Cowboys game on Sunday night, they showed a graphic of all four NFC East teams and the QB’s they’ve started since Eli Manning was drafted. I think two teams had used seven different QB’s and one team had used eight during the time Manning has been the leader of New York’s offense. That really says something and it is about time these media guys and girls give Manning his due. Easy Eli has already eclipsed the 4,000 yard passing mark for a third consecutive year and it looks like 2011 is going to end up being a career year for him.

Rookie RB Da’Rel Scott has shown flashes of greatness and his speed is undeniable. I expect great things from this young man in the future. Rookie WR Jerrel Jernigan has also had a few opportunities to show what he can do. It is difficult to get playing time right now because the G-Men are so deep at the WR position. RB DJ Ware has helped out and done well when needed. TE Travis Beckum has been getting a little more playing time now, while TE Bear Pascoe is primarily a blocker and bulldozer up the middle. The Giants offense is the real deal and has been carrying this team all year.

The Giants will play Wellington Mara’s favorite rivalry, the Washington Redskins this weekend (12/18/11 at 1:00 PM EST at MetLife stadium). The Giants lead the all-time series 91-64-4. Did you know the Giants versus Redskins rivalry is the oldest in the NFC East and one of the oldest in the NFL?

12/12/11 Christmas DAC Day 12, Do You Believe?

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, let me ask you something, do you believe? That was the phrase being thrown around last night on twitter. The Giants were facing a third straight year of being eliminated from the playoffs but they fought off a scrappy Cowboys team to pull out the win. Be sure to come back a little bit later to check out our famous ‘Game Notes’ article, which will have all of the stats and analysis. The final score (37-34) proves that both defenses are nothing to write home about this year but it sure made for an exciting game to watch. There were reportedly eight different lead changes in this game and a huge attendance in the ‘House that Ego Built’.

As I mentioned in the game day article, this was the 99th meeting between these two teams and on New Year’s day 2012, the Giants and Cowboys will play for the 100th time in history. I don’t know how the rest of this season will play out but last night was clearly the best game of the year for Big Blue. Fans could not believe that Big Blue came back like that at the end of the game in a hostile environment. It was a thing of beauty to see play out before our eyes. The Giants have only 3 more games left in the season to lock down a playoff berth.

Most NFL teams have nicknames and the Giants are no different. Can you name some of the titles fans have bestowed upon the New York Football Giants? Let me give you a hand with that. Some of the more popular nicknames for the Giants are Big Blue, the Jints, the G-Men, Big Blue Wrecking Crew, the Road Warriors and the New York Football Giants. The last one was actually the name written on the title for this team. They changed it by adding the word ‘football’, so people would not get confused with the Giants baseball team.

12/10/11 Christmas DAC Day 10, Double Digits

December 10, 2011

NEW YORK – I have been talking to some of our fellow Giants fans about the upcoming Cowboys game. The most important game of the year for Big Blue. I have been very surprised by some of the final score predictions being made. Three Giants fans have predicted a double digit victory for Big Blue, which means they think the Giants will win by 10 or more points. My own prediction has the Giants winning by a TD with the score of 28-21. I am making that optimistic prediction because the Giants are Road Warriors and they play in Texas. The Giants can and must win on Sunday night.

The Washington Redskins and Philadelphia “Dream Team” Eagles are both basically out of the playoffs already. They will not be doing anything but playing golf in January. There is a slim chance that they could get in if the Cowboys and Giants lose all of their final games but that is unlikely to happen. So the Cowboys have our full attention in the NFC East and they will be playing a very hungry New York Football Giants club.

Do you know how many double digit wins the Giants have in 2011? So far (after 12 games), the Giants have only 2 double digit victories and the last one was in week three. This makes sense because each and every week feels like a close game and I’ve been on the edge of my seat for them all. The two teams the G-Men beat by double digits are the Eagles (29-16) and Rams (28-16). If some of the Giants fans are correct, Big Blue might get their third double digit win of the year on Sunday night.

12/6/11 Christmas DAC Day 6, What a Manning!

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, here we are on day six of our little digital advent calendar. I hope you are all enjoying this holiday season. I was thinking about QB Eli Manning’s performance against the Packers again today and thought it was about time to take a look at Manning’s career progress. The guy has it all in his professional career and his personal life. It’s easy to see why so many people out there hate on Manning. Shame on all of you haters!

I honestly believe that when he retires, he will be the greatest quarterback in Giants history. I know that is a bold statement but it is what I believe (sorry Phil Simms). He will need to win another Super Bowl to lock that down and another Pro Bowl selection wouldn’t hurt either. I expect at least one of these to occur this year, if not both (cross your fingers).

I’m going to briefly remind you all of some of Manning’s accomplishments. He is a Super Bowl Champion, Super Bowl MVP, Pro Bowl player and he is an NFL Iron Man (consecutive starts streak). When this season is complete, he will have his third straight year with over 4,000 yards passing and he should pass the 30 TD mark for a second straight year. Those numbers are no joke and something that will keep Manning in the elite QB discussion. Let’s take a look at what Manning has done since beating the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl. 12/4/11 Christmas DAC Day 4, Game Day Fact

NEW YORK – Because of the normal nygreporter ‘Game Notes’ article today, we will only be doing a short DAC fact for today and on all game days. Just a little something for you while you wait for our article later after the game. It is hard to believe we are only 20 days away from Christmas Eve now and 20 days away from that Christmas Eve game with the Jets that I’ll be going to. Remember, my Giants/Jets article will be published on December 26, 2011 for that weekend because I will be away. I am very excited for that game! Big Blue Adding Five to Ring of Honor on Sunday

NEW YORK – The New York Giants have announced that they will be adding five players to the Ring of Honor on Sunday. This tells me that MetLife stadium will be buzzing with the ghosts of old and the stadium should be electric. The Giants plan on inducting LB Carl Banks, TE Mark Bavaro, RB Alex Webster, LB Brad Van Pelt and P Dave Jennings. On behalf of the nygreporter, I would like to say congratulations men, this is a well deserved honor for some of the biggest names in Giants history.

I have had the pleasure of seeing some of these guys play and meeting a couple of them (Bavaro, Van Pelt) let me tell you, Mark Bavaro and Carl Banks are two of the best Giants of all time. They must have saved inducting them for this year in order to generate interest using high profile stars, spreading them out if you will instead of including them all in the initial 30 honorees. It makes sense but to the true blue Giants fan, there is no need for these types of things, we will be there no matter who is inducted. Once a Giant, always a Giant! Let’s take a look at this group of men and congratulate them.

2011 New York Giants ‘Ring of Honor’ Inductees

1. LB Carl Banks – All-time New York Giants legend, 2-time Super Bowl Champion, Pro Bowl selection.

2. TE Mark Bavaro – All-time New York Giants legend, 2-time Super Bowl Champion, 2-time Pro Bowl selection.

3. RB Alex Webster – Webster was born in Kearny, New Jersey, the local product was a 2-time Pro Bowl selection.

4. LB Brad Van Pelt – Van Pelt was born in Michigan and died there in 2009. A fan favorite, he was a 5-time Pro Bowl selection.

5. P Dave Jennings – Jennings was born in New York and spent 10 years with the G-Men. He is a 4-time Pro Bowl selection.

Can Giants Beat NFC South Saints in New Orleans?

NEW YORK – It is amazing how dominant the NFC has been this year. The AFC is almost completely devoid of it’s former star teams, such as the Colts (0-10). The great teams of today are clearly the NFC  Packers (11-0), Saints (7-3), 49ers (9-2), Giants (6-4) and Cowboys (7-4) just to name a few. The AFC has the Patriots (7-3), Ravens (8-3) and Steelers (7-3) but all of those teams are not what they once were. The Ravens have been the best of the bunch this year. The NFC is deep with talented football teams, take a look at the standings and even teams like the Panthers, Falcons, Bears and Eagles are all young and exciting clubs to watch. If your team doesn’t win the division outright, it will be no easy task making the playoffs. NFC teams are explosive and can win big at anytime. The Giants need this win to keep up the pace with the pack.

All of this takes us to the Giants battle with the Saints on Monday Night Football in New Orleans. This is going to be a knock out brawl of a game in my opinion. Coming into this game, the Saints have the No.1 ranked offense in the NFL, while the Giants are ranked No.13 offensively. On the other side of the ball, the Saints are ranked No.20 defensively, while the Giants come in at the No.21 spot for defense in the NFL. The numbers don’t lie. How often do we hear that phrase? Being the No.1 ranked offense in the NFL is a statement and a wall to get over.

The Giants defense is going up against the elite of the elite, No.1 ranked offense in the NFL. That is a dramatic thing for any team to contend with but with Big Blue missing half of their starting defense to injury, don’t think the Saints won’t look to exploit the secondary. QB Drew Brees is too smart and too talented to hold under three touchdowns in my opinion for any team in the NFL. Other Saints stars to keep an eye on are TE Jimmy Graham, RB Darren Sproles, WR Marques Colston, RB Mark Ingram and WR Lance Moore. Watch the TE Graham closely.

For the Giants, I expect TE Jake Ballard and WR Mario Manningham to figure in for a bunch of yards and maybe a TD or two. You cannot overlook WR Victor Cruz who can easily end the night with 100 yards and 1 TD. Brandon the Bull will be looking for some respect and running hard in Who Dat land. Makes you wonder why I haven’t mentioned stud No.1 WR Hakeem Nicks yet. Because I’m saving the best for last. if this guy gets going he can put up 125 yards and 2 TD’s before halftime. Keep an eye on 88 and let’s see if this is one of those nights. The players need to hold onto the ball when it is thrown to them and players need to stop making so many mental errors on the field resulting in penalties. If the G-Men can improve these two areas on Monday night, I think they have a real chance at beating the Saints. My final score prediction is Giants 38 – Saints 35, the Giants win because they know they have to right now.

Eli Manning Using Brains to Cruz through Elite Player Rankings

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, I would hate myself down the road if I didn’t write something about QB Eli Manning and Victor Cruz, right now. The numbers simply don’t lie. Manning is an elite NFL QB, period. Add to that, WR Victor Cruz is emerging as an elite NFL WR in his own right. I won’t use words like staggering or gargantuan (I so very rarely get to use that word in a sentence, thanks QT) but I will say that both Manning and Cruz have been steady and strong, quietly climbing up the rankings and everyone can see it now. They have proven to be resilient, just like this 2011 Giants team.

Let me give you a breakdown of Cruz, look at what he has done this year versus established and elite NFL WR’s. The passing game is going so well that the running game has suffered a bit.

Giants WR Victor Cruz is ranked 8th in the NFL for receiving yards. Who are some of the elite players at WR that are below Cruz? Well let’s see, there is WR Roddy White, WR Reggie Wayne, WR Dwayne Bowe, WR Vincent Jackson, WR Marques Colston, WR Anquan Boldin, WR DeSean Jackson and the list goes on and on, including a guy you may know named Hakeem Nicks. He is also tied for 5th place in the NFL for most WR TD’s (4). You have to remember that Cruz is doing this from a No.2 or No.3 WR position. Those other WR’s mentioned are No.1 WR’s including Nicks, who is the Giants No.1 WR. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t see this coming because I did. I noticed Cruz immediately in training camp WR Victor Cruz, No.80 – photographs This was in 2010 up at the University of  Albany. The New Jersey native just had something, he was out there catching everything and making plays. I have been watching Cruz from that moment until now.

He is playing so well, that he has become relevant in fantasy football. Now that is really saying something and a testament to quality performances on the field. On top of everything, he is a great guy off the field. What more could you ask for from a young and talented wide receiver? Hate it or love it, Victor Cruz is playing on an elite level right now. The numbers don’t lie and he should be voted into the Pro Bowl. I can’t wait to see what he does against the Eagles on Sunday night.

Cruz was at Juliet Supper Club in New York this week when a shooting occurred and killed one man in the place. Cruz was with a few other Giants players celebrating a birthday (no Giants were injured). I think that put things in perspective for him about going out and seeing how your life can change in a moment. Look at WR Plaxico Burress as a perfect example. Right or wrong, Burress went to jail for a few years and that’s the way that story ends. The wrong place at the wrong time can even get you killed. Players cannot stop living their lives over these occurrences but it should keep them on their toes and making smart choices.

QB Eli Manning won’t win the NFL MVP like I’ve said before, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers seems a lock for that this year. But Manning does belong in the Pro Bowl and I hope that puts the story to bed. Do another Top 100 player list and see where Manning is ranked this year. He is playing very smart football right now and players like WR Victor Cruz and TE Jake Ballard are benefitting from his evolution. WR Hakeem Nicks and WR Mario Manningham are two more dangerous weapons that Manning has in the mix. The Iron man is simply phenomenal and I’m glad he is our quarterback. New York Giants Starring in Road Warriors Part II?

NEW YORK – The Giants have been winning games lately and I noticed that they have already won 3 out of 4 on the road. The will play in road game number 5 on Sunday against the 49ers. If they win that game, could we be looking at the Road Warriors Part 2 here? They have also won 3 out of 4 home games. Winning more on the road and having your Christmas Eve game against the Jets away (still played at MetLife stadium), the G-Men could go for 6 or 7 wins on the road this year. The last 3 road game will be against tough opponents. They will face the New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets Jets on the road after playing the 49ers in San Francisco this Sunday. If the Giants win in Frisco, they will be 4-1 on the road and I think they would finish by beating the Cowboys and Jets. The Packers are the biggest test of the entire schedule though and that is a home game at MetLife stadium.

Why am I bringing all of this up? Because of the obvious similarities to the 2007 team, that fans have been comparing the 2011 team to for weeks. The ‘Road Warriors’ nickname was bestowed on them in 2007 by the fans and media. I try not to buy into that too much because I don’t want to throw any bad karma on what’s happening this year. I am very excited to see them play the 49ers this Sunday and think a win there would really make their playoff chances shoot up exponentially. Is it too early in the season, at week ten, to start wondering about a possible playoff game from the G-Men this season? I certainly hope so after missing the playoffs for the past two years in a row. Last year was a joke. How the Giants did not get into the playoffs with a 10-6 record shows the flaws in the system. Coach Coughlin said you can kiss his butt if you don’t like it. He said that 10-6 is a winning season and a good record. I agree with him. The 2011 season is a different story and looks very promising. If the Giants beat the 49ers, then to be true to myself, it makes me think the Giants are almost a lock to get to the playoffs. It would take a historical collapse or something for them to miss the playoffs in 2011.

Let’s get something straight, QB Eli Manning is an ELITE Super Bowl Champion, Super Bowl MVP, Pro Bowl player, Road Warrior and franchise quarterback who happens to be an Iron Man in the game of NFL football. Give him the respect he has earned. If Manning does not get voted into the Pro Bowl this year, I will know the game is rigged. By the way, fan voting has already started at NFL.com. He is playing out of his mind this year and deserves these few words of acknowledgment for what he has built this year. He is also the team MVP for the year in my opinion. Manning continues to prove the doubters wrong and play the game on his own terms. He is a great leader on the field and a role model for kids off the field. What more can you ask of a quarterback for an NFL team?

Speaking of the Pro Bowl, if I had to guess, I can see a bunch of Giants players that deserve to go to Honolulu. Players like QB Eli Manning, OL Chris Snee, WR Hakeem Nicks, WR Victor Cruz, TE Jake Ballard, DE Osi Umenyiora, DE Jason Pierre-Paul, LB Michael Boley, S Antrel Rolle, P Steve Weatherford. How many of these guys get in will be revealed down the road. I say at least four or five of these guys will be in Hawaii. I think everyone can agree the 2011 NFL MVP will most likely be Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers will be in Hawaii and Manning deserves to be there too. As of this date and halfway point of the 2011 season, QB Eli Manning has thrown for 2,377 yards 15 TD’s 6 INT’s.

How many of the 3 road games (Saints, Cowboys and Jets) left to play this year will the Giants win? How do the Giants playoff chances look mid-way through the year?

Giants Playing Without Their One Two Punch

NEW YORK – Someone make this ride stop, I want to get off. When I heard that WR Hakeem Nicks, RB Ahmad Bradshaw and C David Baas would sit against the Patriots, in the most important game of the year, all I could do was shake my head. When are the New York Football Giants going to play a game at full strength? When is this madness going to end? Why are New York Giants players dropping like flies? What changes need to be made to the staff to prevent this epidemic from spreading beyond this season? The Giants have lost their number one running back and number one wide receiver for the New England game. How long will they be out and how does this change QB Eli Manning’s game plan? I don’t know but I do know the G-Men better focus on the middle of the field when Brady has the ball in his hand.

Some good news has been announced about rookie CB Prince Amukamara and WR Ramses Barden both returning from their respective injuries. I guess fans should be grateful to get a couple of guys back but there is still that word, injury. How much these guys will play is another story entirely. As a Giants fan, I have been anxiously awaiting the debut of Prince and look forward to seeing what he can do on the field. The Giants secondary can certainly use the help after losing a bunch of guys to, well you know, injury. Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell is going to need a solid game plan to counter the Patriots genius head coach. I expect the Patriots short passing game to be a huge factor as I’ve mentioned already. There will be three or four bomb plays thrown in to keep the balance but the middle of the field is going to be attacked often. Some football “experts” are talking about a lot of no huddle offense being used and it would make sense if you’re using the short game. I predict the Giants leading tackler will be a linebacker in this game.

I am going to remain positive and predict a Giants victory in a shoot out between QB Tom Brady and QB Eli Manning. I expect a high scoring game with the final being 35-33. Everyone knows the Patriots defense isn’t very good, so the G-Men should be able to put up a bunch of points on them. I am very concerned about the Patriots using those TE’s and stopping them will be the difference between victory and defeat for Big Blue in my opinion. WR Wes Welker is the biggest threat but those TE’s could kill us. I guess there is nothing left to say but 18-1! Go Giants!
