The New York Giants got right to business on Monday morning, following this father’s day weekend. The G-Men cut five players today, on the official first day of summer (summer solstice) and one of them might surprise you. Throughout the minicamp practices, two players were locked in a battle for a starting role. Of course, it isn’t the most sexy position but punters Matt Dodge and Jy Bond have finally found out who won the fight.
Punter Jy Bond was cut from the team today, so it looks like rookie Matt Dodge will be the New York Giants punter this season. Ex-Giants punter Jeff Feagles was spotted working with the guys during minicamp. I loved hearing that he was coaching/helping at the stadium and wonder if GM Jerry Reese has already offered him a coaching job with the team?
The Giants official website said that the team needed to cut these five players in order to make room to sign their draft picks. So far, rookie safety Chad Jones is the only rookie to sign (4-year deal) with the team. Does the fact that the team only released five players, mean that only five out of the remaining six rookies will be signed? Who would seem to be the odd man out in this scenario?
The players who are safe include S Chad Jones. DE Jason Pierre-Paul, LB Phillip Dillard, DT Linval Joseph, OG Mitch Petrus and P Matt Dodge. That leaves rookie LB/DE Adrian Tracy the odd man out from what I can see happening. The only player I can see him going up against out of this draft class, is OG Mitch Petrus. One of those two guys will be gone before the season starts and if I had to bet, I would say Adrian Tracy will be gone. We still need to see who the team decides to replace WR Domenik Hixon with. Hixon will miss the entire 2010 season with a torn ACL. We are almost at the end of June, which is one of the more quiet months for NFL news. Things will begin to pick up speed in July though.
Let’s take a look at the five players who were cut today 6/21/10.
– Jy Bond, P
– Vince Anderson, DB
– Carson Butler, TE
– Lee Campbell, LB
– Micah Johnson, LB
What do you think about the five players that were cut today? Were there any you hoped would make the final roster?

The New York Giants have completed their afternoon session of the mandatory mini camp, which began this morning. Early estimates by the associated press say about 7,000 New York Giants fans attended the “open practice”. The team advertised free tickets to the practice on their website, Giants.com and we also wrote an article about it here. It was a great day to be at the stadium because the weather was perfect.
The New York Giants finished their first day of a three day mandatory mini camp. There was a minor scuffle between the offensive and defensive lineman today during the afternoon practice, it was broken up very quickly and all was forgiven. Reportedly, Pierre-Paul and Osi were locked up with some offensive lineman. It’s good to see the two team mates sticking together, even if it was a short and meaningless scuffle. When the team gets to Albany it might not be such a minor thing. I expect some huge battles for starting roles on the defense, especially at the linebacker and defensive linemen positions.
Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of the afternoon practice. Check out Giants.com for video of player interviews.
– WR Domenik Hixon went down grabbing his knee shortly before 3 PM EST. He remained on the sidelines with his knee wrapped up and did not return to practice.
– QB Eli Manning had a good practice and said he is very excited for the new season. He looks like he put on some muscle during the off season.
– CB Aaron Ross is on the field and getting back into fighting shape. He will surely be getting the rust off and hopefully returning to form in 2010.
– LT William Beatty has been playing with the first team offensive linemen. LT David Diehl has been moved to the LG position with the first team.
– Punters Matt Dodge and Jy Bond have a battle going on. Both of them have been impressive today. Dodge kicks further then Bond but Bond has more hang time.
– LB Clint Sintim owned up to having a less then acceptable rookie season and vows to be better in 2010. I believe him.
– S Kenny Phillips was all smiles after practice, while being interviewed in the locker room. He still remains a question mark for the season.
– DT Justin Tuck had a good practice and sounds like he is all business for this season.
– DE Osi Umenyiora has given new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell a good grade so far. Osi expects to have a solid season.
– The Giants defense has been experimenting with four defensive ends (Tuck, Kiwi, Osi, JPP) during mini camp.
Who do you expect the 2010 breakout player for the New York Giants will be?

The New York Giants began their mandatory mini camp this morning. Coach Coughlin did an interview (the video can be seen on Giants.com) with reporters a little while ago and seemed very calm and cool. He mentioned what a beautiful day it was (75 degrees, sunny, little humidity) for football and even joked around with one of the reporters. I am glad that was captured on film. The veterans and rookies will be playing together and getting aquatinted. This is a great time of year for Giants fans and things will begin to happen more quickly now that we are closing in on July. Training camp in Albany is only 6 weeks away now.
The afternoon practice will begin at 2:50 PM EST (come back for updates on the afternoon practice) and it is open to the public. We mentioned how to get free tickets in one of our previous articles. They are expecting between 20,000 and 30,000 fans to show up. Coughlin also mentioned that he hopes the fans know that the team will not be wearing pads today. He wants the fans to have a good experience and thinks the fans will fire up the players a little bit.
Let’s take a look at some of the fine points Coach Coughlin mentioned during his interview and overview of the morning practice.
– DT Jay Alford sat out of practice today because he tweaked his MCL last week. They say he will be fine.
– S Kenny Phillips was brought up again and there was nothing new to report. He is working hard and making progress.
– S Antrel Rolle received a lot of praise from Coughlin. Coughlin said he loves his “good energy” and his aggressive play on the field.
– LB Clint Sintim is labeled as a guy whom Coughlin has “big expectations” for this year. Sintim agrees.
– Former Giants punter Jeff Feagles was at the practice this morning working with new punters, Matt Dodge and Jy Bond.
– RB Andre Brown seems to be performing well on the field. Brown had season ending surgery last year and has yet to play in an NFL game.
– DE Osi Umenyiora is working his way back into the groove and hopes to put 2009 behind him.
– The players are responding well to new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Fewell is energetic and extremely vocal on the practice field.
Are you excited about the mandatory practices starting today?

The New York Giants signed 2010 3rd round pick S Chad Jones to a 4-year contract on Friday. The former LSU standout is 6’2″ 218 pounds. He was asked to lose some weight when he first arrived at 230 pounds. He has cut 12 pounds since then and seems to be a sponge when it comes to learning the system. He is a tremendous athlete who could have played in the MLB if he decided to stick with baseball. He was a two sport athlete in college playing football and baseball.
Jones will wear No.35 for the New York Giants.
The New York Giants had one of the worst defensive backfields in the game of football in 2009. It was absolutely atrocious and painful to watch. The coaches and front office made swift and harsh changes to the team after one of the worst overall defensive performances in years. They signed safety Antrel Rolle via free agency and picked up safety Deon Grant. They also drafted safety Chad Jones in the third round. Jones is a player that I featured as a possible super star on the next level, so I was very happy to see the team steal in in the third round. I have big expectations for this kid and want to welcome him to New York.
I think it is safe to say that the defensive backfield has been thoroughly addressed. Let’s not forget new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell who is known as a DB coach. The 2010 New York Giants will look nothing like the team that took the field in 2009. Chad Jones will just add to the mix, in what is becoming a crowded backfield talent wise. If S Kenny Phillips can return to the team fully healthy, he will start opposite S Antrel Rolle. One of the three safeties, Johnson, Jones and Grant will surely not be with the team next season and possibly even this season. Kenny Phillips is the wild card in the whole DB scheme.
– Kicker Sam Swank was also waived by the team yesterday.
What do you think about the New York Giants signing rookie safety Chad Jones to a 4-year deal? Do you think he will become a solid NFL player?

Hello Giants fans, I just took a look at the Giants.com homepage and noticed that the team is offering free tickets to watch a mini camp at the New Meadowlands stadium. I will leave all of the information below so if you decide to attend you can get your ticket. The best way to go about this would be to send a friend an email so he can get a free ticket too because they give out only one per email address. So be sure to call up a friend or shoot him an email before they stop running the promotion. What a great oppurtunity to go out and see some of the rookies and veterans on the field together. It will also give fans the opportunity to check out the new stadium, since a lot may not be able to afford season tickets during this down economy. The sign up is really simple and you get a ticket via email almost instantly. Check it out!
I don’t know how long they will be running this promotion so I suggest everyone send out the email as quickly as possible! Maybe we will see you there at the stadium. I’m sure the Big Blue faithful will be out in record numbers to see the G-men on their new field. Enjoy!
The fine print says: You must be over 21 years old to get a ticket, otherwise have a legal guardian get a ticket as well and go with you. Food and drinks are not included with the ticket but they will be on sale.
The date and time of the practice is Tuesday June 15, 2010 @ 2:50 PM EST – 4:30 PM EST (100 minutes)
Here is the link to sign up and get a free ticket to a New York Giants practice at the New Meadowlands stadium.

Here is a new segment that we will be doing here on the NYG Reporter, we will call them the unoriginal name of the “top ten” lists. Yes, we understand the cliche but it is still an effective means for communicating pertinent information about the team. The previous article we wrote before this, where we took a look at the fantasy football possibilities got me thinking. I mentioned that I thought WR Hakeem Nicks would break the single season Giants record for receiving yards in 2010. The current all-time record is 1,343 receiving yards, in a single season, set by WR Amani Toomer in 2002. During Hakeem Nicks’ rookie season in 2009, he had 790 receiving yards and six touchdowns, even though he only started in six games.
It will be interesting to see how the Smith/Nicks WR duo compliment each other. We could be on the verge of something big here in 2010. Let’s not forget about WR Mario Manningham, WR Ramses Barden, WR Derek Hagan, WR Domenik Hixon, WR Sinorice Moss and the rookie WR Tim Brown that Coughlin has mentioned during interviews. They will be competing with each other during the current OTA’s going on and even more so, come training camp in Albany this summer.
We will be doing the running backs and quarterbacks records during this week as well, so be sure to come back and check them out.
Let’s take a look at the top ten all-time receiving yards records for the New York Giants.
New York Giants all-time receiving yards, per single season, record standings.
1. WR Amani Toomer, 1,343 receiving yards in 2002.
2. WR Steve Smith, 1,220 receiving yards in 2009.
3. WR Plaxico Burress, 1,214 receiving yards in 2005.
4. WR Homer Jones, 1,209 receiving yards in 1967.
5. WR Amani Toomer, 1,183 receiving yards in 1999.
6. WR Del Shofner, 1,181 receiving yards in 1963.
7. WR Earnest Gray, 1,139 receiving yards in 1983.
8. WR Del Shofner, 1,133 receiving yards in 1962.
9. WR Del Shofner, 1,125 receiving yards in 1961.
10. WR Amani Toomer, 1,094 receiving yards in 2000.
Are you surprised by the amount of wide receivers on this list that have played in the 1960’s? Do you think that WR Hakeem Nicks can re-write the record books in 2010?

Hello Giants Fans, I’ve noticed that the 2010 Fantasy Football Mock Draft rooms have been heating up. I know it is difficult to believe but ESPN already has their mock draft rooms up and running. It’s the same story with CBS Sports and their fantasy mock drafts. We are almost into June now and things are sure to heat up over the summer. The real 2010 NFL Draft has been over a couple of months now and the next significant time period will be training camp. There hasn’t been a release of those dates and locations as of yet but we know that the G-Men will be attending Albany this season for certain.
I am going to give you a list of the New York Giants players that will be worth having on your fantasy roster for the 2010 NFL season. I believe that the Giants wide receivers offer the best shot at making a difference on your team. I expect Easy Eli to have an improved year in 2010 and make the Pro Bowl. Clearly, the wide receiver group will benefit the most from Manning’s production on the field. I think drafters can get the New York Giants defense as a steal in the mid-to-late rounds. I expect the Giants defense to finish in the top ten for 2010. These are simply my thoughts on the 2010 possibilities for Big Blue. I’m sure this will help someone who reads this and decides they want to take a shot on some of these guys. Remember, this is designed to be a fun game, so don’t take it too seriously and enjoy yourself.
2010 Fantasy Football players on the New York Giants.
1. WR Steve Smith – Smith is coming off a career season with Big Blue and he also made the pro Bowl in 2009. He is going to lose some passes to Hakeem Nicks but will still get enough to build on his numbers from last year. Look for 1,200 plus receiving yards and 10 TD’s from Smith in 2010.
2. QB Eli Manning – Manning is also coming off of a career year and I expect him to outperform 2009’s numbers and also make it to the Pro Bowl in 2010. I expect 4,000 plus yards and at least 30 TD’s from Manning in 2010.
3. WR Hakeem Nicks – I expect Hakeem Nicks to have a breakout season, by setting a new Giants record for receiving yards in a single season (currently 1,343 yards by Amani Toomer in 2002). This is another guy who could prove to be a steal around the 5th or 6th round of your draft.
4. RB Brandon Jacobs – Look for Brandon the Bull to return to form in 2010 with 1,000 yards rushing and 10 TD’s. You can easily get Jacobs in the 5th round in most drafts, I suggest you grab him or pay later.
5. RB Ahmad Bradshaw – Bradshaw will prove to have the skills to be a number one running back on any team. I predict he will have a 200 plus yard game during the 2010 NFL Season. I’m predicting 1,000 plus rushing yards and 5 TD’s in 2010.
6. TE Kevin Boss – Boss is about to have surgery on his ankle but should be ready for training camp. He is working his way up a short ladder of NFL tight ends. I’m guessing 600 receiving yards and 5 TD’s in 2010 for Boss.
7. New York Giants Defense/Special Teams – I am predicting the New York Giants defense will finish the 2010 NFL season in the top 10.
8. Wild Card Players – WR Mario Manningham, WR Ramses Barden, RB Andre Brown WR Victor Cruz and TE Travis Beckum.
Which New York Giants players do you deem worthy of a fantasy football roster spot? Do you play fantasy football? Check out the link in the comment area for a brand new fantasy sports site.

The New York Giants are a very young team. I was extremely surprised to see just how young, when I checked out the roster this morning (courtesy of Giants.com). I decided to look deeper into the college career of Linval “The Anvil” Joseph today and was going to write an article about him (I’ll get to you soon Linval), when I noticed the “years of NFL experience” next to each players name. Needless to say, I was very surprised at what I read. I started to wonder if I was just getting old and if things had always been this way or if this truly was a youth movement going on in New York. I understand that a player with five years of NFL experience is technically a veteran but I would hardly say that he was an old player. In fact, I would say a player at the five year experience mark is just hitting his prime. I used the five year mark as a starting point and worked my way up the ladder of experience. Players at the four year mark and below would certainly be considered “young” in football terms.
The one thing I learned by taking a closer look at the roster was, the oldest three players and spots on the list, all belong to the offensive line. The New York Giants offensive line is one of the best in football and I am not suggesting that they can’t play anymore, I want to make that clear. There is only one player on the team with ten years of NFL experience and only two players on the team, with nine years of experience. All three of them are starting offensive linemen. Giants GM Jerry Reese addressed the offensive line last year by drafting OT William Beatty and again this year by drafting OG Mitch Petrus. I would love to see the current offensive line play for another decade but it is just not going to happen. There are currently 37 players on the roster with four years or less NFL experience.
Personally, I do not look at this as a bad thing. I think the team is doing exactly what they need to do, in order to make another run at the Super Bowl. I have complete faith in Jerry Reese and the rest of the Giants staff. I also disagree with all of the media hype about Tom Coughlin’s job being in jeopardy this year. The man won the Super Bowl in 2007, coached the team to a 12-4 record in 2008 and was plagued by injuries in 2009. Last year was not coach Coughlin’s fault in my opinion. But enough about my opinions, let’s take a look at what the Giants roster tells us.
The Number of players with NFL experience, by years.
10 years of NFL experience – 1 player
9 years of NFL experience – 2 players
8 years of NFL experience – 1 player
7 years of NFL experience – 2 players
6 years of NFL experience – 4 players
5 years of NFL experience – 6 players
What do you think about the youth movement going on in New York? Is this something that will help or hurt the team during the 2010 NFL season?

The New York Giants signed two players today who were attending the rookie mini camp. This is quite an achievement for these two young men because it truly is a long shot to get signed when players take this route. The G-Men also released a player today as well. The roster is slowly beginning to take shape and with each new roster move, the Giants are showing the areas the feel need to be addressed.
The first player signed today is a linebacker from Kentucky named Micah Johnson (not to be confused with the WR prospect Micah Rucker). Johnson is 6’1″ 262 pounds and played most of last year with a strained MCL, something that might have kept teams from taking a closer look at him. The Giants must have seen something they liked or they would not have signed him. The linebacker position will be under a microscope this year and most fans are extremely curious to see who will be the starting MLB when the season starts.
The Giants also signed a quarterback from Wake Forest named Riley Skinner. The 24 year old QB is 6’0″ 210 pounds and is the winningest quarterback in the school’s history. The biggest knock on Skinner (as told by the player experts) will be his height. I have said it before and I will say it again, I’m not sure how well Jim Sorgi can perform on the field during crunch time. I am not calling the man out but when you are Iron Man Peyton Manning’s backup QB, you pretty much watch the game from the bench. Everyone knows he will be an incredible asset as Eli’s study partner but I am very curious to see what he can do when given an opportunity to play, something that all Giants fans hope will never be necessary. Who will eventually end up the true backup QB to Eli Manning is anyone’s guess at this point. QB Rhett Bomar seems to have the inside track for getting in the games.
QB Dominic Randolph was waived by the Giants today.
Two Big Blue linebackers Bryan Kehl and Phillip Dillard, have decided to switch jersey numbers. Kehl will wear No. 55 from now on, while Dillard will rock No. 53. There was no mention of any side payments or favors that were required in order to switch, which has become a custom in the NFL when vets deal with rookies.

I’d like to officially start this column by paying dues to one of my personal heroes, Mr. Jeffrey Allan Feagles, the best punter in the history of the NFL.
Feagles started his NFL career back 1988, when he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks. He came to Big Blue in 2003, and had 7 successful seasons for us. He and former Giant John Carney were the last remaining NFL players from the 1980s.
A real highlander, Feagles never missed a game in his 22-year career, and holds the record for most consecutive games played in history, with 352, which is incredibly impressive. His strong play lead us Giants fans to simply stop worrying about the punter position, as Feagles would consistently place the ball inside the 10-yard line, keeping opposing offenses with their backs against the wall.
Among the reasons Jeff decided to retire at age 44, he stated that his body was telling him it couldn’t do it anymore. Additionally, he is now going to be able to spend more time with his wife Michele, and be able to attend his sons’ games, the eldest of which is C.J. Feagles, who is a punter at the University of North Carolina at Chappel Hill. Let’s hope he is as good as daddy.
Master Feagles retires holding the following NFL records:
• Most consecutive games played;
• Most punts;
• Most punts inside the 20;
• Most punting yards.
Thanks for everything Jeff, be happy wherever you go, and please come back as the punters coach one day!!!!
Throwing into Coverage:
The Giants draft this season followed the trend set by Jerry Reese of adding value over need. Overall I like the players Reese got us, however, I really question the Pierre Paul pick. Not that JPP is not going to be a good player in this league, but just that I don’t think he was the best guy around for our team.
It is a fact the Reese needed to upgrade his defense, but it is also a fact that we did not need another defensive end. We have a gaping hole at MLB, so why not get Sean Wheatherspoon, who was picked by the Falcons at 19, and then still go and get Phillip Dillard in the 4th round? Reese made a decision not to resolve the MLB situation via free agency, and to do it through the draft instead, so why in Jeff Feagles’ name didn’t he try harder to get more playmakers at that spot? Maybe even trading up to get Rolando McClain wasn’t a reach. For these reasons I think Jerry Reese threw into coverage with the first pick.
Now, with that being said, I really like Phillip Dillard. There is something about the way he speaks that really calms me down, and the fact that he is a compulsive film studier almost gives me tears of joy. Add that to the fact that all our other guys are mediocre at best (I hope they prove me wrong, though) and we have an heir to Antonio Pierce’s kingdom.
Automatic First Down
The Matt Dodge pick was a smart move. Knowing about Feagles’ retirement, and having only an Australian who doesn’t even understand the rules of the NFL as the punter, I was pretty nervous about this position, so Jerry Reese got an automatic first down on this.
Finally, another great move by Big Blue was the signing of undrafted free agent LT Dennis Landolt. Dennis was a 3-year starter at Penn State, playing 39 consecutive games, and never missing a practice. Moreover, Landolt is extremely smart, having achieved two degrees in five years of college (Supply Chains & Information Systems and Economics).
This is the kind of player the Giants need in their squad: smart, hard-working guys who will provide depth for our veterans, pick their brains, and maybe in a few years even become full time starters.
This is all for now, see you on my next time out.
