NYG Reporter LIVE 2010 NFL DRAFT SPECIAL: Day Two

The 2010 NFL Draft, Round 2 will begin TONIGHT at 6:00 PM EST. Rounds 2-3 will be done TONIGHT and Rounds 4-7 on Saturday beginning at 10:00 AM EST.

The 2010 NFL Draft began last night and there weren’t many big moves made. At least, none by the New York Giants who sat quietly and waited for the 15th pick to arrive. The Giants decided that DE Jason “Wild Thing” Pierre-Paul was too much to let pass by. I did some research on this guy before the draft and knew he was on the Big Blue radar. A ton of people had predicted round one would end exactly like this and to them I say, well done. Pierre-Paul is a raw talent who is a freak of nature. He is a big guy at 6’4 3/4″ 270 pounds. He can add a lot of muscle to that hustle and bulk up to 280-285 with no problem. The Giants still need to get themselves a linebacker, unless the team has already decided to start one of the current guys. This is something I would not be opposed to since we have some veterans who have spent their entire careers with the team, LB Chase Blackburn in particular. LB Jonathan Goff and LB Bryan Kehl have been getting some votes of support as well. Is there such a thing as MLB by committee? We know there will not be a rookie starting this season, that’s for certain.

I believe that today will be the day that the team comes away with a new linebacker. I’m happy with the teams first round pick but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit surprised they choose that route. I know a lot of the players the G-Men targeted were gone way before they had a chance to pick. I thought for certain the team would take an offensive lineman if they didn’t choose a linebacker. I thought that C Pouncey would be a terrific fit for the team. Pouncey ended up getting selected three picks later by the Steelers. Pierre-Paul seems like the real deal, though he needs some polishing and coaching at this level. I would have to guess that the Giants will choose an offensive lineman tonight and possibly a linebacker or defensive tackle. Perhaps, the team will come away with two of the three positions I have mentioned.

Many have speculated that DE Osi Umenyiora’s job might be in jeopardy now that Pierre-Paul was drafted. Giants GM Jerry Reese was quick to kill that noise, by repeating what he has been saying all along, “Osi will not be traded!”. I believe Osi is owed roughly $10 million dollars over the next 3 years, so it would make financial sense to keep him, as well as for his talent level.

New York Giants Draft DE Jason Pierre-Paul in Round 1

The New York Giants have selected DE Jason Pierre-Paul. A very explosive defensive end at 6’5″ 270 pounds that played at South Florida. He is known as a menace to opposing Quarterbacks. Jerry Reese was not please with the play of the Giants defensive ends. Some of the guys on the ESPN LIVE crew were comparing him to Javon Kearse by calling him a “freak” of nature with long powerful arms. The entire television panal agrees that Paul will be a very good pro player. They also made a comment that this might mean that current DE Osi Umenyiora might have something to worry about. Osi has now been mentioned  as possible trade fodder for Big Blue and Jerry Reese was quick to dismiss the rumors. I am going to christen Jason with a brand new nickname that fits his playing style, from this day forth, ye shall be known as, Jason “Wild Thing” Pierre-Paul.

Former coach Jon Gruden and the overview on DE Pierre-Paul at NFL.com all say that he should be able to put on another 10-15 pounds with ease bulking him up to 280-285 pounds at 6’5″. I’m still a bit concerned about the linebacker position. There seems to be two main areas that the team should draft shortly. I still believe that OL and LB are two areas that need addressing. Perhaps they will select one of the two, sometime tomorrow, in rounds two or three. Welcome to New York Jason!

Hello Giants fans, we are now less then 3 hours away from the 2010 NFL Draft. Check back here with us and use the comment section for updates, concerns or anything else related to “day one” of the 2010 NFL Draft. What do you think will happen? 2010 NFL Draft: New York Giants Part 3

The waiting is almost over for NFL fans. We are now just about 24 hours away (4/22/10 7:30 PM EST) from “Day One” of the 2010 NFL Draft. I have heard complaints from many football fans about the new 3-day format for draft coverage and I agree with them. It’s too long Roger! I am of the opinion, that it will be short lived and the NFL will return to the traditional 2-day NFL Draft weekend by next year. Enough with the advertising revenue you expect to make from extending it to three days and think about the fans in this situation. At least, we hope you will. Tonight should be a night for all Giants fans to exhale. You’ve done your research, you know what the team needs are and there is nothing left to do but wait for the clock to start tomorrow evening.

All signs point to the New York Giants taking a linebacker with their first pick. The team cut Antonio Pierce earlier in the year and have yet to replace him. When I took another look at the linebacker position on paper, I found that they really aren’t in a desperate situation at all there. In fact, it might be one of the more deeper positions on the team, even if there are no star names attached to it. I’m convinced that the G-men will take a linebacker no later then day two, if not on day one. The most popular names being throw out there are LB Rolando McClain and LB Sean Weatherspoon. We will have to wait and see.

Some Giants fans have been talking about grabbing running back CJ Spiller with the first pick. Personally, I do not think the kid will be available that late in round one. I also do not think the team has to be concerned with the running back position this year. Jacobs and Bradshaw will be healthy and Ware and Brown will be there for depth. If I were giving odds on the Giants taking a running back in round one, they would be 50 to 1. Of course, if Spiller is staring them in the face at pick fifteen, it might be hard to overlook. If the team does take Spiller, then a current running back (possibly DJ Ware) will almost certainly be cut not long after.

One extremely interesting scenario would be if WR Dez Bryant is still around at the 15th pick (most experts predict that he will be). I seriously doubt the Giants would take wide receivers in back to back drafts but this kid could turn out to be something special. If the targeted linebackers and offensive linemen are off the board by the time Big Blue picks, I would not be surprised at all if the G-men took Bryant. And by taking Bryant, the team could then cut the recently re-signed Sinorice Moss. This is unlikely to happen but would not surprise me. You heard it here first, wink wink.

Other then the linebacker position, the Giants need some help with their offensive line. Not because the current linemen are poor players but because the team needs some depth in that area. I have serious doubts about LB McClain being available when the G-men pick, so the next logical area to explore would be the offensive line. The team will need to look towards the future and grab a Center or Guard for certain and probably one of each position. OT William Beatty seems to have gained the teams confidence with his play in 2009 and should see more playing time this year. Anything can happen on draft day and the rumors about a possible Osi Umenyiora trade continue to circulate the web. At this point, I’m exhausted and drained from all of the talk, rumors, speculation and analysis and I’m ready to get this thing started. What do you think? Are you ready for the 2010 NFL Draft?

New York Giants 2010 NFL Schedule Released

Hello Giants Fans, the wait is over. Here is the the regular season schedule for the New York Giants in 2010. You can also find this information in the “Schedule” tab in the top tool bar throughout the entire year. It looks like the Giants have four night games this season and a pretty difficult schedule. Enough jibber jabber about that, let’s take a look at the schedule.

I haven’t had much time to digest this yet since it just came out about 15-20 minutes ago but I see a lot of tough opponents in 2010. I like the fact that the team has a bye week in the middle of the season during week eight. I also like the fact that the team will be playing in four night games. Roger Goodell made a point to have all of the NFL teams play a division rival in the final weekend of the regular season. The NFL changes the schedule from time to time but this is what they have put out thus far. Any changes that need to be made from here on out will be made in the actual “Schedule” tab on the top tool bar.

New York Giants: Seven Rounds in Seven Days, Rd.1

They say that all good things must come to an end. With that being said, we have reached the final day and round of our “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” segment. It has been a pleasure to do these comparisons for our readers and we hope you learned as much as we did. We are now only 2 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. Although, I do not like the NFL experimenting with this new 3-day NFL Draft event, I am excited to have finally reached draft week. I believe that Roger Goodell will find it to be an unsuccessful venture and return to the traditional 2-day draft weekend that all football fans have grown to love. They are trying to generate an air of excitement for something that doesn’t need any promotion and it is coming off as an over dramatic soap opera. They are doing the same thing with releasing the 2010 NFL schedule TONIGHT at 7:00 PM EST. A 3-hour television event for releasing the 2010 schedule? Really Roger?

2010 Draft – Round 1 – Position Prediction – Linebacker

There are some very good players listed here for round one. This is going to be just as difficult to choose a winner, as it was in round two. With QB Eli Manning staring us in the face, I don’t know how we can choose Jerry Reese outright. Once again, Accorsi is missing a pick this round and Jerry Reese has held on to all of his. We have some Pro Bowl players listed here and some that have had extremely short NFL Careers thus far. WR Hakeem Nicks should have an outstanding season in 2010 and if Kenny Phillips can return healthy, he will be a force at the safety position. DE Mathias Kiwanuka continues to push his case for a starting role and if Osi talks his way out of New York, he will get his shot.

Taking everything into consideration from the history we have shown here, I have to give round one to Ernie Accorsi. Eli Manning is just too much to pass over because he is the cream of this crop and a Super Bowl MVP. CB Aaron Ross and S Kenny Phillips have had injuries that have limited their careers thus far but that isn’t Jerry Reese’s fault. Both of these players could have outstanding careers if they can remain healthy.

New York Giants: Seven Rounds in Seven Days, Rd.2

It feels like we just started doing this segment yesterday but here we are almost at the end. Tomorrow will be the final day of the “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” comparisons, as we reach the first and last round. We are now only 3 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. This is an extremely unique situation that will not happen again until Jerry Reese decides to retire and a new GM takes over the reins. The 3 year see-saw of draft pick comparisons might not happen again for at least a decade, so I hope all of our readers enjoyed this. I can honestly say that Jerry Reese has done an outstanding job replacing a legend in the pro football world. New York Giants fans have nothing to complain about when it comes to the front office.

This has been the most difficult round to compare in this segment so far. Both Reese and Accorsi have done an outstanding job here by drafting players who have already made it to the Pro Bowl. I am going to call round two a push in my opinion. Let me explain why I see round two as being equal. If we “x” out the solid players such as OL Snee, CB Webster, WR Smith and CB Thomas, that leaves us with WR Moss, LB Sintim and OT Beatty. Moss is clearly the bust out of all of these guys but Sintim and Beatty are too young to have proven anything yet. So Moss being invisible “x’s” out Sintim and Beatty’s inexperience. I have to give Jerry Reese some extra credit for once again grabbing two players in a round and holding on to all of the Giants picks.

New York Giants: Seven Rounds in Seven Days, Rd.3

Are you beginning to get excited Giants fans? We are now only 4 days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. All of our research and investigation of players will soon be over and we will finally know who the G-men had on their radar all along. Big Blue had a busy week last week, they signed a few players and seem to be just about ready to enter the War Room and lock it down. I anticipate one or two more moves, on the teams behalf, before the draft this Thursday night. I don’t think it will be anything major but you never know with Jerry Reese. I am still not counting out a possible trade on draft day but it seems unlikely given Reese’s history of holding onto his picks.

In case you haven’t read the previous “Seven Rounds in Seven Days” articles, what we are doing is comparing Ernie Accorsi’s last three years as GM with the team and Jerry Reese’s first three years as the new GM. We are not comparing these men to find a winner but rather taking a look at the past six years and what rewards have come from their work. There are no winners in these comparisons, we are just doing something entertaining for the fans leading up to draft day.

This is a difficult round for me to decide between Accorsi and Reese but once again, I have to give it to Reese. I’m giving Reese the nod in round three because he drafted double the players and all of them are still on the team. I also like the fact that he was able to get two picks in round three last year. Defensive end Justin Tuck is a huge pick of course and we need to give Accorsi credit for scouting him. I never envisioned the Giants as a team that did a lot of deals during the draft. But after seeing how many picks are absent from Accorsi’s final three drafts, is really opening my eyes. Until I laid everything out like this, I had no idea that the team had been consistently giving up that many picks.

Another thing that stands out in my mind is exactly how young the G-men are. The New York Giants are a very young football team and about to get even younger next weekend. If you take a look at our previous articles, where we take a look at every position on the team, you will see that a lot of those positions are extremely young. A player with only four or five years of NFL experience is considered the veteran in those areas.

WR Domenik Hixon and CB DJ Johnson re-sign with Giants

The New York Giants re-signed two players yesterday, as they continue to make roster moves just five days away from the 2010 NFL Draft. WR Domenik Hixon was signed to a one year deal and will be entering his fourth season as a New York Giant, after two years with the Denver Broncos. Hixon has been asked to do a little bit of everything, including returning kick offs and punts on special teams. He is a tall receiver at 6’2″ but never blossomed into the threat the Giants envisioned when they brought him on board. That’s not to say that Hixon can’t flourish later in his career but to this point, he hasn’t done much at the WR position. The crowded wide receiver group will make it even more difficult for him to crack the starting lineup. At this point, it would take an injury or two for Hixon to become a starter. WR Steve Smith, WR Hakeem Nicks and WR Mario Manningham appear to be the top three guys on the team.

DJ Johnson is a young cornerback who played his first season in New York in 2009. We don’t know much about this guy yet but apparently the team thinks he is worth holding onto as an exclusive rights free agent. Johnson is also a big guy at 6’2″ 200 pounds and could provide some needed depth at the cornerback position. CB Aaron Ross remains a huge question mark for the CB group. Terrell Thomas has become a force at the cornerback position and could earn a Pro Bowl spot this year if he continues his outstanding play. DJ Johnson has no shot at cracking the starting lineup this season but he certainly will be a welcome addition to the cornerback group. I hope that he can prove me wrong by becoming a terrific player quickly and making Big Blue even stronger but it’s unlikely.

New York Giants: Seven Rounds in Seven Days, Rd.4

The 2010 NFL Draft is now 5 days away Giants fans. Today, we take a look at the round four picks from the past six years. So far, Jerry Reese has proven to be extremely resourceful by garnering the nod for rounds 5,6 and 7 over Accorsi. Will he be able to run the table and grab round four as well? True Giants fans know that comparing both of these men is like comparing Michael Jordan to Magic Johnson. Opinions may vary on who was the better player but all will agree that both were great. Both are great in their own right and we are merely comparing picks here and not the men.

Let’s take a look at the New York Giants fourth round picks for the past six years.

ROUND 4

Ernie Accorsi

2004 Draft – Round 4 – LB Reggie Torbor

2005 Draft – Round 4 – RB Brandon Jacobs

2006 Draft – Round 4 – DT Barry Cofield and OT Guy Whimper

Jerry Reese

2007 Draft – Round 4 – LB Zak DeOssie

2008 Draft – Round 4 – LB Bryan Kehl

2009 Draft – Round 4 – RB Andre Brown

Finally, we have a round that goes to Ernie Accorsi and a round where Accorsi has all of his picks. There should be no doubt at all that round four has been a monster for Accorsi in his final three years as the New York Giants general manager. In my opinion, all three of his picks are winners. Reggie Torbor is a player that I have always liked, Brandon Jacobs is the starting running back for the G-men and Barry Cofield is solid as a rock in his defensive tackle position. I like all three of these players and all have proven to be wise choices. Jerry Reese didn’t do bad either. All three of the players Reese picked are still on the team. DeOssie and Kehl have had more opportunities to play then Brown (Brown was injured for his entire rookie season in 2009) but Brown has some serious potential to grow and flourish.
