2011 NFL Draft: Day One, Round 1 New York Giants

April 28, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants have made their 1st round pick. With the 19th overall pick the Giants took CB Prince Amukamara (6’0″ 206 pounds – 4.43 40 yard dash) who was still available for some reason. There were a lot of experts who thought/think that Prince is a top ten talent (myself included). Giants fans can be proud that GM Jerry Reese pulled the trigger on this no brainer. RB Mark Ingram and OT Anthony Castonzo were both available when Big Blue took Prince, so that is something fans will have in the back of their minds once the season starts. Make no mistake, this is a solid draft pick for Big Blue that could start paying off as early as this year.

The Giants will now have an even more dangerous backfield with the addition of Amukamara. Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell must be wearing a perma-grin right now at the thought of coaching this young talent. With solid safeties in Rolle and Phillips and solid cornerbacks in Thomas and Ross, throwing Prince into this mix will really do some damage on the field. The Giants have a bigger need at the offensive line position but who can blame them for drafting a top ten talent that somehow dropped down to the 19th pick? Not me.

I am still hoping that C Stefen Wisniewski can fall to Big Blue in round two. He might even be worth trading up for since the team has a few extra compensatory picks this year. I would be very surprised if the Giants didn’t take an offensive lineman in the 2nd round tomorrow. Clearly, no one can blame them for taking Prince because no one thought he would be available. This is what you call a pleasant surprise.

The 2011 NFL draft will continue tomorrow night at 6:00 PM EST at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Then again on Saturday beginning at noon. Be sure to come back tomorrow for more coverage and check out the @nygreporter twitter account for immediate reactions from the draft.

Are you surprised by who the Giants picked in round one or were you expecting something like this?

2011 NFL Draft: D-Day Has Arrived Giants Fans

April 28, 2011

NEW YORK – Everybody can exhale because the draft has finally arrived. It feels like it has taken forever to get here, but the wait is finally over (sort of). Well, at least day one has finally arrived, and Giants fans will learn who the first round pick (19th overall) will be later this evening. Thank goodness because this lockout has fans ripping their hair out. Speaking of the lockout, the situation has become confusing with the judge ordering it to stop but team facilities still being locked up. It is still unknown how the lockout will affect trades and transactions in general during the entire 2011 draft. Let’s not worry about the lockout for the next 3 days and enjoy the draft.

The G-Men have a few areas of need that have been clearly explained for months now. The top three needs the Giants have are offensive linemen, linebacker and defensive tackle. This seems to be the general consensus for most fans and myself. I still firmly believe the team will walk away with one of these positions of need tonight, but if RB Mark Ingram is available, he may be too much to pass up on. The tight end and cornerback positions have also been mentioned quite a bit this offseason.

I have complete faith in GM Jerry Reese (the draft guru) and the rest of the Giants staff and scouts. They have done an outstanding job for years now, and I see no reason why 2011 should be any different. With that being said, the only two positions that would literally shock me (being drafted in round one) are the defensive end and quarterback positions. Everything else is fair game.

Be sure to come back later and check out our draft coverage. We will be doing an article on the Giants 1st round draft pick and giving our opinions on their choice. On behalf of the nygreporter, I would like to say good luck to the Giants organization. The draft begins at 8:00 PM EST tonight. Enjoy!

Who are you hoping the Giants draft in the first round later tonight?

2011 NFL Draft: 2 Days Away Giants Fans

April 26, 2011

NEW YORK – Well Giants fans, the 2011 NFL Draft is now 2 days away. Are you getting excited yet? I know that I am. A judge also ordered an end to the lockout yesterday, but the NFL has appealed. I don’t know how long that will last but at least it is some good news for the fans. Still, the big story of the week won’t be the extremely annoying NFL lockout, it will be the NFL draft.

I still dislike the new schedule Roger Goodell has implemented with trying to drain every ounce of publicity he can get over three days instead of the traditional draft weekend. I absolutely hate that the marquee day (round one) is now on a Thursday evening. The draft is too long and should go back to the Saturday and Sunday schedule in my opinion. I know a lot of NFL fans who completely agree with me as well.

To be honest, I am exhausted from doing all of the research on college players. Not nearly as much as the Giants scouts I’m sure, but none the less I’m ready to get started. The Giants needs have not changed at all. Usually a trade or something will mix up the draft needs assessment, but due to the lockout, that is not the case this year. I’m sticking with my original needs assessment by position and still believe the G-Men will take a OL/C or DT in round one Thursday. I know there has been a ton of hype about Big Blue grabbing a OT in the first round but I do not agree with those people. I know sticking to my original layout isn’t as exciting (list will be added below) as giving you some new info but I feel strongly about my picks.

New York Giants: 2011 Draft picks by position.

Round 1 pick – Center or Defensive Tackle (Center is clearly the bigger need here but the draft is stacked with talented DT’s)

Round 2 pick – Defensive Tackle or Linebacker (they have some nice talent at LB on the team already but DT could end up being an issue)

Round 3 pick – Cornerback (there is a lot of talent at the CB position but Fewell needs some new blood to work his magic on, depth as well)

Round 4 pick – Offensive Lineman (this could be a tackle or a guard, the o-line will need help soon and depth doesn’t hurt)

Round 5 pick – No 5th Round Pick, traded away for RB Darius Reynaud (5’9″ 201) who is used as a returner.

Round 6 pick A – Tight End (the team has a mission to get QB Eli Manning as many weapons as possible)

Round 6 pick B – Running Back (they need to add a young RB into the mix and GM Jerry Reese is good at finding talent late)

Round 6 pick C – Linebacker (keep stacking talent until you find the golden 3 that fit the best)

Round 7 pick – Cornerback or Wide Receiver (this guy should be used on special teams, get the most talented special teamer available here)

Who do you think the Giants will take with the 19th overall pick on Thursday?

Happy Easter to our Readers and Giants Fans

April 24, 2011

NEW YORK – I would like to wish all of our readers a very Happy Easter. I hope everyone enjoys their time spent with family and I hope all of our young readers find a lot of Easter eggs during their Easter egg hunts. Good Luck kids!

I remember when people used real eggs to hide back in the day (and maybe some still do) but these days they use the plastic ones filled with coins or candy. This allows for more outdoor Easter egg hunts which is nice for the kids. I hope the weather allows for a wonderful family day.

We are now four days away from round one of the 2011 NFL draft. The Giants fans are getting excited and the prediction messages have been pouring in to us here. It is a lot of fun to guess, predict and research who the Giants will take in round one but the truth is only the people in that war room know who is going to be drafted. GM Jerry Reese expects some players currently on the roster to step up in 2011. He talked about certain players this week including LB Clint Sintim and WR Ramses Barden and mentioned how the team is counting on them and how he hopes they will break out in 2011. I agree with Mr. Reese and I think the players he mentioned do as well.

The 2011 NFL lockout has reached 44 days now and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Hopefully, the fans will be able to enjoy some of the offseason activities that are now threatened by this nonsense.

2011 NFL Schedule: New York Giants Edition

April 19, 2011

NEW YORK – The NFL announced the 2011 regular season schedule today on the 39th day of the lockout. Talk about a contradiction. They should be required to add the proverbial “asterisk” next to the schedule like they do in baseball for steroids. Just to let the fans know that there still might be an interruption to the 2011 season. Hey, thanks!

I do not mean to sound condescending but this lockout is affecting thousands of people during a nationwide economic crisis. The thousands I speak of are not players or coaches or owners. They are the everyday people that work for NFL teams who aren’t millionaires. I don’t think the NFL realizes that people get paid about $300 per week (if they are lucky) for unemployment benefits. And the people that live month to month are 9 days behind on all their bills.

The release of the schedule is good news. The Giants got a very nice bye week in week seven. I always have a good time reading and planning around it. It looks like the G-Men will have a tough schedule on the road this year. The play some really tough teams. I think they will be up to the task come September after they get some work in at training camp and some time in the weight room. Enough from me, here is the 2011 NFL regular season schedule you have been waiting for fans!

2011 NFL Minicamp: New York Giants Edition

April 18, 2011

NEW YORK – It’s been a crazy off season for football fans in 2011. You have to wonder if the teams will even hold minicamps this year because of the lockout which has now been going on for 38 long and painful days. The Giants began their mandatory minicamp on June 15, 2010 last year. That’s about 8 weeks away from us now using the current 2011 calendar. The rookie minicamp started even earlier then the mandatory one. It looks like they will need to get this lockout thing straightened out soon or else. I believe the owners have a date set in their mind. They will be willing to negotiate until the alarm date goes off on their iPhones, blackberry devices or Get Smart shoes.

There was some good news put out there today. The NFL will release the 2011 schedules tomorrow at 7:00 PM EST. This is always a fun 20 minutes when you make a cup of coffee and go over the new schedule. Check out who has the hardest strength of schedule and all of that. It is a nice and relaxing information gathering session. The fact that fans already know the opponents makes it a little less exciting but getting to find out the bye week is a plus. Perhaps, they will include all of the preseason dates and times as well. They released the preseason games last week but not the entire preseason schedule with dates and times.

The minicamps are important. Just like the training camps are important. Each piece to the puzzle is important no matter how insignificant it may appear to others. I’m sure Tom Coughlin and his coaching staff are watching too much film and climbing the walls right now at this very moment. Some of the staff might be up at 3 A.M. in a zombie-like state, watching film on the 7th round possibilities at the fullback position. It gets pretty ugly for staff this time of year and I applaud you all who do it everyday. You’re going to need a nice mini-vacation after April 30, 2011.

Do you think the NFL lockout will extend beyond the NFL Draft and into late summer? Will NFL teams hold their annual minicamps in 2011?

2011 NFL Draft: Best Available vs. Immediate Need

April 15, 2011

New York – There is one question every football fan hears at least once every April. That question is, should their team draft for best available or immediate need? I hear this more then enough from tons of people. I have a philosophy to answer this very question. It is based on logic and an understanding of the New York Giants roster and because I am a fantasy football beast. Who should the Giants invest in the most? The offense or the defense? Well, they were both very good in 2010, regardless of missing the playoffs. My guess is that 3 out of 5 rounds will be drafted for defense within the first 5 rounds in 2011.

Which of the two is a better drafting style? I say drafting takes a little bit of both but only because it means drafting for need first in the early rounds. You do this by simply drafting the best available immediate need player. Save the drafting by “best available” for mid to late rounds. Again, this is only my philosophy on drafting in 2011, I’m not claiming to be Nostradamus or anything. I just think it makes a lot of sense to draft this way.

Round 1: I honestly think a team should draft for need in round 1 without question, there is no debating this topic with me. Take the best LB available if you need a LB. The reason I feel this way (particularly with being a Giants fan) is because let’s say a really good defensive end is on the boards at the 19th pick of round 1, he is the Giants highest rated player on their war room board. I would be shocked if the Giants took another DE to add to an extremely deep group of talented guys running the show in that department. Especially in this years draft, if there is a solid 10-year Center or aggressive DT available, take one of those guys please. Don’t just take the highest rated player. If this is what Jerry Reese does then I apologize and mean no disrespect but I think he knows what I mean. I also think he is smarter than that. The players surely do and so do the fans.

Round 2, 3 and 4: These rounds are a bit more tricky. Personally, I am sticking with drafting for need in rounds 1 and 2 (using the best available player at need of course). Rounds 3 and 4 could be a mix of both. I also think there could be some positions that should not be considered at all. Such as the defensive end position in 2011. There is just too much talent on the team to waste a high draft pick on a DE. With Osi, Tuck, Kiwanuka and JPP alone, the Giants pass rush is insane. There has to be one position on offense and defensive that should not waste anyones time. Still send the scouts out and gather all the intel but get some other positions in the mix come draft day.

Rounds 5, 6 and 7: These rounds should all follow the draft by “best available” philosophy to the letter. Considering the reality that 2 out of the 3, drafted in these three rounds, might not make the team. Always take a WR or CB in the 7th round and be sure he is an excellent special teamer. Stack that area for the next three years/drafts, this includes returners and punters now that it has become a problem area.

If someone came up to you and said “Hey, you can only draft 2 defensive positions within the first 5 rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft. What would those positions be?” For myself, I would have to say defensive tackle and linebacker. Canty and Bernard have a lot to prove in 2011. Cofield hopefully stays and gets paid. The LB group has a lot to prove in 2011 too. We need to see some guys step up including LB Clint Sintim who has the fans on his side. LB Phillip Dillard who looked promising last training camp before going down with an injury. LB Adrian Tracy is another young man who suffered an injury but needs to show up in 2011. What about bringing back DT Jay Alford to help out if he is available?

For defense, I’m most confident in our defensive ends followed by our safety group. The cornerbacks come in third on that list to round out my top three. On offense, I am most confident in the QB followed by the wide receivers. The running backs come in third on my top three list. I’m most concerned with the offensive line followed by the tight end group on offense. Hopefully, FB Madison Hedgecock returns to full strength or I could see FB becoming a problem too.

What do you prefer when it comes to drafting, best available or immediate need?

2011 NFL Draft: Only Two Weeks Away Giants Fans

April 14, 2011

NEW YORK – We are now only 14 days away from the 2011 NFL Draft. This is a very exciting time of the year for the die-hard and true blue fans. You can immediately tell who knows what they are talking about come draft day. The bull crap gets cut quick when you try talking junk to a knowledgeable fan. Radio City Music Hall in New York during the spring, does it get any better then this? I hope some of the rookies catch a Yankee game or a Knicks game while they are in town. I’m sure they get hooked up with some nice tickets and other cool events to check out. I hope they decide against that much rumored boycott of the draft by rookies. Just show up and have some fun.

As of today, my needs assessment remains pretty much the same and I will list my position picks for rounds 1-7 below again. You can flip flop players in the late rounds and any position you draft makes sense and can be justified. It’s the first three rounds that get you respect. If you can predict those first three rounds correctly, then you can consider yourself on the same level as any other Giants writer or expert out there. Do it more then once and establish some consistency, publicly. You will be getting paid for your opinion sooner or later if you’re consistently “in the race” with your opinions and correct most of the time.

We will be doing a ton of coverage over the draft weekend (4/28/11 – 4/30/11). Be sure to come back and check out player analysis that whole weekend as well as other LIVE reports throughout all rounds of the draft!

Giants to Play Panthers, Bears, Jets and Patriots This Preseason

April 13, 2011

NEW YORK – The New York Giants learned what their preseason schedule will be. They still haven’t gotten the times or dates 100% correct but we do know they will play the Bears in East Rutherford on Monday Night Football in late August. It’s the 2nd game of the four. That should be a battle between the defenses and a nice look at the rookies for game two. I enjoy going to a preseason game just as much as I enjoy a regular season game. I know that sounds strange but it’s true. These new players are a part of the Giants family now and I want to see what they can do on the field. I can name a ton of players that I have watched during preseason games or training camp and knew they would be stars. It’s a cool feeling to know that before the general public and a lot of fun to track their careers from day one.

Let’s take a look at the 2011 opponents. The Carolina Panthers were atrocious in 2010 and have the number one pick overall in this years draft. The Bears had a much better season and quite frankly surprised the heck out of me. I did not expect them to play as well as they did in 2010. The Bears have the 29th pick in the draft this year. The Jets have gone deep into the playoffs the past two years and should be good again in 2011. The Jets have the 30th pick in this years draft. The Patriots are not the Patriots of old. They have not won anything significant since 2004 (8 years) but yet continue to win a nice handful of games each year. Their legacy was forever stained (18-1) by the G-Men in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants beat the undefeated Patriots in convincing fashion and took home the Lombardi trophy. It seemed to be destiny for Big Blue following an amazing 2007 season where they were dubbed “The Road Warriors”.

On a direct note to the NFL. We the fans know that you milk every event or action to the maximum and we are OK with that. However, let me share something with you that annoys fans. Please do not tell us that you are releasing a preseason schedule, then not include dates and times. I’m sure that fans would rather wait until you have all of the information to share before this annoying tease. We understand that things could change schedule wise and that dates and times are always subject to change. All we ask is that you give us a few days notice if possible to make arrangements to attend or watch the game on TV. You have the 2011 NFL Draft coming up in 2 weeks and should have plenty of information to share with the fans on that subject. Release the “complete” schedule after the draft or prior to it with a tentative date and time.

2011 NFL Preseason Games: New York Giants

Week 1 – Giants @ Panthers – Date/Time: TBA

Week 2 – Giants vs. Bears – 8/22/11 @ 8:00 PM EST

Week 3 – Giants vs. Jets – Date/Time: TBA

Week 4 – Giants @ Patriots – Date/Time: TBA

Have you ever attended a Giants preseason game? Will you be attending any preseason games this year?

New York Giants News, NFL Lockout Reaches 32 Days

April 12, 2011

NEW YORK – Hello Giants fans, I would like to discuss some current New York Giants news with you but there isn’t any. Things have absolutely screeched to a halt in the NFL world and have been doing a favor for the other big 3 sports such as baseball, basketball and hockey. I’m sure they must be garnering a much larger portion of website traffic and viewership. The bad news is that NFL fans are suffering from the drought and some are beginning to lose interest. Not a good sign for the NFL. Not a good sign at all.

The 2011 NFL Lockout has reached 32 days. This is really getting ridiculous now. The 2011 NFL Draft is just a couple of weeks away and the rookies are now being pressured to boycott the draft? Really? This is a shame and something that has no place in the NFL. Take the stand that you do not negotiate with dream killers. These kids worked their entire young lives towards the goal of standing on that stage and agents want to use them as a tool for leverage in the CBA talks, shame on you. Even remotely joking about that is a shame. I really hope that these rookies ignore the pressure to boycott and go enjoy themselves at Radio City Music Hall in New York on draft day.

The only thing fans can do now is speculate. Speculation, speculation and more speculation. The problem is that even the speculators are getting tired of reading their speculations. A month without any real NFL news and now 16 days away from the draft have got to be weighing harshly down both sides. Remember, I predicted that the lockout would end before the draft and I’m sticking to what I said. Well, we are now 16 days away as I mentioned and still no resolution. My prediction is beginning to look like Tony Romo in playoff games, bad.

Let’s be honest, the NFLPA is trying to protect the players and get what they can, while they can. The owners will haggle over every dime until they concede to any new deal. The players have a rare opportunity to go spend some money and enjoy their lives while the other guys fight it out. Deep down inside, the players must be fine (for a little while anyway) with only having to hit the gym for a couple of hours and then having the rest of the day to themselves. A small and rare hiatus that allows them to be with family, friends or do the things they haven’t done in a long time. If you play for a team like the Giants, who call New York City home, then the options just multiply while at home but I’m sure some of these players got their passports out and are doing some traveling. Can we blame them?

Judge Nelson has ordered a mediation between the NFL and NFLPA this Thursday 4-14-11. More news will certainly follow this meeting but for now we must wait.

What would you do as a millionaire athlete with a month off from work?
