NYGReporter was representing on Tuesday, as we called into the Giants.com radio podcast “Eisen’s Insight LIVE” and talked to the guys over at the stadium. The show is hosted by Michael Eisen and John Schmeelk. I called in as “Robert from New York” and can be found at the halfway mark of the show. I asked the guys about safety Kenny Phillips’ injury status and how he is progressing. Michael Eisen said that he was coming along well but he will need to give it the final test on the field to really know for sure. He also said the team is being “cautious” about announcing anything definitive concerning Phillips. I’m sure that I am not the only Giants fan concerned about Phillips’ situation because he is one of the most promising athletes the Giants have. We all wish him a full and speedy recovery.
I also asked about RB Andre Brown (ruptured achilles) and CB Aaron Ross (hamstring) and how they were doing, after both had suffered injuries in 2009. Again, Michael Eisen said that both of them were coming along fine and that it was a good thing (as good as it can be) that Brown got injured last August, so he had time to fully heal. Eisen also mentioned that Ross will need to get on the field and see how the hamstring feels before he will know anything for certain. Aaron Ross plays a huge role in the Big Blue secondary and Brown was touted as a possible break out star when he was drafted in 2009. The fans certainly hope that both of these men will be good to go in 2010.
It was a brief talk during the podcast but I found both Eisen and Schmeelk to be good guys. I have followed their work for quite some time and had a lot of fun being on their show. For some football players, even retirement can’t get the game out of their blood. Such is the case with former New York Giants legend, Leonard Marshall. Reports have confirmed that Marshall has accepted the head coaching position at a New Jersey high school. Mr. Marshall, who has no previous coaching experience, will take over as head coach for Hudson Catholic high school in Jersey City. Can you imagine coming home from school as a 16-year old kid and telling your Dad that Leonard Marshall will be your football coach? I would love to see the expression on some of these parents faces when they find out.
Hudson Catholic has had their football program go downhill in recent years. The addition of Marshall should make a significant difference in getting kids interested in playing and boost ticket sales to the games. It’s nice to see this humble man with nothing left to prove give back to the kids and bless them with his valuable football knowledge.
I can’t think of a better time to take the opportunity to reminisce on Mr. Marshall and what he means to the history of the New York Giants. Leonard Marshall was an outstanding defensive end for the G-men who won two Super Bowl rings in 1986 and 1990. He also went to the Pro Bowl on three occasions when he was a part of the famous Big Blue Wrecking Crew. Marshall spent ten years with Big Blue after they drafted him in the second round of the 1983 NFL Draft. When he retired at the age of 33, he was playing for the Washington Redskins. In 1996, he signed a contract with the Giants so that he could officially retire a New York Giant. He will forever be a true blue New York Giant. He has also done extensive charity work since leaving the game.
Do you remember the days when Marshall would harass opposing QB’s? If you are too young to remember that and your a Giants fan, I strongly suggest doing a search for some video of this man, he was one of the greats in Giants history. Good Luck at Hudson Catholic Mr. Marshall!
Hello Giants Fans, I don’t know about you but my head is still spinning from last weeks 2010 NFL Draft. There were some significant roster moves made by the New York Giants this past week. I will give a brief breakdown of the actions taken by Big Blue and give you my thoughts on them. I like what the Giants are doing this off season. I believe the front office has made the team better with a very good draft and by bringing in some valuable free agents. The team also lost some very good players including Antonio PIerce and Fred Robbins, we have yet to see how the team reacts to those losses. I firmly believe the New York Giants will return to the playoffs in 2010 but I am unsure how far they can go beyond that.

– Jeff Feagles has officially retired from the NFL after 22 years. Feagles is a guaranteed Hall of Famer and he will be impossible to replace. Hopefully, either Jy Bond or Matt Dodge can step up and give the team some peace of mind.
– The New York Giants signed 13 players this past week. These are players that will be on the team during training camp and possibly the practice squad. It would be wonderful to see one of these young players step up and make a name for themselves. I’m rooting for them to do well in an unlikely situation. The players include CB Seth Williams, LB Lee Campbell, DT Nate Collins, QB Dominic Randolph, TE Jake Ballard, WR Tim Brown, WR Duke Calhoun, WR Victor Cruz, OT Dennis Landolt, C Jim Cordle, CB Leon Wright, DE Ayanga Okpokowuruk and S Michael Greco.
– Gerris Wilkinson was re-signed by the Giants to a one year contract. This is a good signing for the Giants but Wilkinson will need to play well this season if he wants to be on the team in 2011.
– The New York Giants began their rookie minicamp this past week with 56 players trying to prove that they belong on the team.
– The New York Giants training camp dates have not been announced yet but should be soon. I will include the dates in our “Events” section here on the top toolbar when they are available.

It feels so good to be back and writing about the New York Football Giants. For any of you who have been able to follow my writing over the last year or so you have probably noticed that sporadic is an understatment. Don’t get me wrong I love talking football, and that never stops (ask my friends, they take motrin because of me), but I’m not always good at getting my ideas down on….paper for lack of a better noun. Point is, I herby solemnly swear to update you with breaking news, thoughts and opinions as they form, hence the “Weekly Update: Edition 1”. Draft is done, I’d like to tip my hat to Rob for some truly excellent draft coverage, and to the Giants for a truly excellent draft. We have a few projects but the coaching staff is well equiped to bring these guys along. If you wanted my honest, pessimistic, realistic opinion I’d tell you the Giants are not Super Bowl bound in 2010. I think the draft did one very important thing however, it set the Giants up for glory in 2011. Looking ahead to that year, the G-Men will almost defiantly lose a defensive end (probably Osi), but now they can afford too, and it sets them up to draft offensive line and running back in the next draft making the team complete and frankly; scary!
Moving on to update number two, I attended the Big City Lacrosse Classic 4/10/10 in the new stadium, and let me tell you the stadium is huge. Dwarfing Giants Stadium, which is right next door, and looks well…awesome! It really has a unique exterior look which will be identified with Big Blue for years and years. The interior was somewhat sparse, and the third concourse wasn’t quite finished as it was still sectioned off, but it’s a lacrosse classic…can’t expect much. Food pricing wasn’t as awful as reports indicate, however I don’t know about beer (not 21). But if you think about it they make the prices high so fans don’t get totally trashed, I mean come on, you’re telling me if beer was $2 you wouldn’t have like 6? All in all it was a great experience, I even stood on the sideline for a little (turf felt nice). Plus, Syracuse destroyed Princeton so my day was complete!
So that’s all for now, again sorry I haven’t written more, been doing a lot of college prep/finishing senior year stuff (I’m heading to Syracuse University next year just as a side note haha). I promise I will update weekly or you can come and yell at me all over the comments thread. Bye for now!
The New York Giants and New York Jets will be doing a coin flip to decide who gets the first home game at the New Meadowlands Stadium. I read this earlier in the day and thought for sure something was wrong. I was sure that since the Jets got the honor of playing the final home game in the old Giants Stadium in 2009, then the G-men would have the honor of opening up the new one in 2010. Apparently, the Jets no longer want to be considered the Giants little brother and are making a stink about it. I expected more from the franchise that was allowed to play in Giants Stadium for all of those years.
Reports are claiming that the G-men are taking the high road in this battle and keeping their thoughts in house. The Jets on the other hand are making it known publicly that they want the game. I think the Giants will agree to the petty coin flip the Jets are proposing, win the coin flip and end up opening the new stadium anyway. Fate and Karma have a way or making everything OK in the end. It would be a shame to have the Jets play the final game at the old Giants stadium and then play the first game at the new stadium. Something just doesn’t seem right about that. The stadium will no longer have the name “GIANTS STADIUM” in big glorious letters across the building marque but make no mistake, this is still the home of the New York Giants first and foremost. The Jets were riding the wave of Big Blue for many horrible years when they struggled and didn’t have a home of their own. The Giants have won three Super Bowl Championships since the glory days of Broadway Joe and the Giants are the premiere football team in New York.
With that being said, I guess it doesn’t really matter who plays the first game in the new stadium. This is about principals and class now. Both are areas where the G-Men pride themselves in maintaining at all times.
The NFL has started to do something very interesting, in honor of the 75th anniversary of the NFL Draft. They have started a versus section on NFL.com, where fans can vote on one player versus another. You could have Joe Montana facing off against Phil Simms or Ray Lewis squared up against Mike Singletary. I know this is a question that has been asked for years and something that has been dissected and examined by all fans. But for all of our efforts, we still don’t know the answer.
How is it possible to figure out who was the greatest NFL player of all time? It’s impossible to me. I am a Giants fan, so of course I am going to say LB Lawrence Taylor. A Bears fan will most likely say RB Walter Payton. A 49ers fan might say WR Jerry Rice. It seems like for all of the effort put into this question, the best we can all do collectively, is choose a top 5 or top 10 list. Taylor, Payton and Rice are all on that list by the way. Some have to break it down by offense and defensive players. Some just roll their eyes when asked for their choice. I’m not sure what scientific formula could produce the answer but I am going to stick with Lawrence Taylor as the greatest football player of all time.
We all know he changed the game forever with his unique style of attacking. We all know that he has had off field issues that make some doubters dismiss his superiority on the field. If we start small, say at the linebacker position, can you give me the name of a better linebacker in NFL history then LT? OK I didn’t think so. On to the next question, can you tell me the name of any defensive player who is better then LT? Again, you would be hard pressed but here is where it gets tricky. When we begin to look at the NFL as a whole and include offensive players into the mix, the picture becomes cloudy. Payton and Rice to be specific are just as talented and athletic as LT was. The difference is what they made their bodies do with that athleticism. A running back, a wide receiver and a linebacker. I’m sure some of you have your own choices to throw into the mix and please feel free to do so. But out of the three players I mentioned, I’m picking LT because defense wins championships. I would love to hear what you think. Is LT the greatest football player of all time?
Many fans wanted Antonio Pierce to be cut this upcoming 2010 season. I have had many discussions with fans about this topic and could not let the subject go without a final word on the Giants defensive general, Antonio Pierce. I understand that his skills have declined with age (33) but he was still a New York Giant. It seems to me like fans are forgetting all that he has done for the team. Without sounding sappy or mushy about the subject, the man deserves some respect now that he has moved on. He also left the team with a lot of class by publicly praising the organization and saying he understands the business move. He said he will cherish the time he had in New York and wished them well. What more do you want from the guy?
He has proven to be a great team mate and friend to his fellow players. He is a Super Bowl Champion and Pro Bowl player. He commanded the defense on the field and did his job extremely well, even if he lost a step due to father time. Personally, I was sad to see him go. Now here we are without a middle linebacker and we’re creeping up to the NFL Draft. I am confident that Jerry Reese has a plan and he will execute it shortly. You don’t get rid of a player like AP without having some sort of a backup plan. Perhaps, the team feels like it is time to give someone on the roster currently a shot, but who? Chase Blackburn? Jonathan Goff? No one knows the plan and we must all sit back and wait for it to unfold. I wish AP luck in everything he does in the future and nothing but success in his life in general.

Hello Giants fans, I thought we could do something different today and try to predict the Giants draft picks by position and round. Naming player prospects is fine as well, as long as you list the position next to the name. I have been having some talks with my fellow Giants fans about this and opinions vary as always. Of course, we still don’t know if Big Blue is done with the free agency market yet. So far, they have signed S Antrel Rolle and QB Jim Sorgi. There are positions of need to fill, with MLB being the most apparent.
So for now, let’s assume that the G-Men are done with free agency (which I do not believe). Looking at the current roster and taking into consideration the quality of players that remain at each position, let’s try to figure out what the Giants will do on draft day. Good luck and I look forward to checking out your predictions for the 2010 NFL Draft. I will leave my personal predictions below.
I see LaDainian Tomlinson still on the market and I’m wondering how that is possible? Even a 30 year old Tomlinson (I choose not to refer to him as LT, out of respect for Lawrence Taylor) has still got some gas in the tank and can run circles around a lot of current NFL RB’s. To answer the title question, Yes. Tomlinson could and should become a New York Giant. I could see him signing a 2 or 3 year deal with the team and split carries with Brandon Jacobs. We would need to cut Danny Ware and use Ahmad Bradshaw as a third down back. In truth, Tom Coughlin could just start the hot RB and inter-change them at will.
The bottom line is that having Jacobs, Bradshaw & Tomlinson is a good problem to have. It instantly upgrades us to one of the best RB Corps in the NFL. It might also be just what the doctor ordered for Tomlinson, splitting carries in this point in his career would only extend it. I would keep RB Andre Brown on the roster because he has a lot of potential in the NFL and nobody got to see what the sophomore can do yet. He was injured early in training camp during his rookie season last year. Jerry Reese must have Tomlinson on his radar, even if it were to glance at the prospect of bringing him to New York. I will support what ever choice he makes because he is able to see more then we can.
The Giants still need a middle linebacker as their number one priority but nailing down Tomlinson for 2 or 3 years, will fill a lot of seats in the New Meadowlands Stadium and put the Big Blue running game into a higher bracket. We will have to wait and see where he ends up. Reports are claiming that the Vikings appear to be the most interested at this point.
The New York Giants found the backup QB they were looking for after the departure of QB David Carr. Jim Sorgi was signed to a deal today after passing a physical with the team. Sorgi was Peyton Manning’s backup QB in Indy for six years. The 29-year old Sorgi said that he was excited about working with Eli Manning and helping him in any way possible. I’m glad that the team addressed an area of need rather quickly, locked in and pulled the trigger on Jim Sorgi. However, I do not think he is a better QB then David Carr. I would have preferred to have kept Carr but Sorgi might prove to be extremely helpful in the homework department. The fact that he has worked closely with the best Quarterback in the NFL, is a huge plus for Eli Manning, even if he is Peyton’s brother.
I’m not sure how much field time Sorgi will get, probably about as much as he did with Peyton, since both Peyton and Eli have Iron Man streaks going for the most consecutive starts. The Giants continue to make all of the right moves on paper and have kept their word by aggressively hitting the free agent market. I am looking for one more big signing before the NFL Draft next month. Middle Linebacker is the most blaring need as of today and a rookie simply cannot take command of a team the way a veteran can. This might be a position worth trading a player for, if one cannot be found via free agency. There is a never a dull moment during the off season!
