NEW YORK – The Mara family has been around football since the beginning and the name holds a lot of weight around these parts. The NFL and media deem it newsworthy to mention that John Mara was one of the first to reach out during the CBA talks and prior to it. He tried to work out a deal and it’s all over the news? That means something. The NFL is in lockdown mode and who knows when the final deal will be worked out. Fans are scratching their heads wondering why these talks aren’t on CSPAN as well as the NFL Network 24 hours a day. If both sides want to be recognized and heard (the same as the MLB steroid hearings), then both sides should be heard by all. The fans know what is fair, let them be the judge since they are paying for everything anyway. Get your primary investors more involved.
I have an idea on how to save money on the salary commitments by owners. Simply adding the jersey rights program to the players, as a salary option. Generate additional revenue by using what is in front of you. Jersey sales. There must be reasons why players haven’t started charging to use their name and number more (as long as they rep their current NFL team). For example, Rebook is simply the hired hand that provides the New York Giants with their authentic NFL team jerseys. The New York Giants sell the jerseys separately as the official final product. In some cases a player will have something worked into their contracts about jersey sales. But where is the majority of that money going? I say it is time to give the players a bigger cut of that money since it is licensed through the team. This will eliminate some of the pressure the owners feel to pay their players and some of the players could make more then their initial investment. This is a win for both sides involved.
Mr. Mara has a ton of smart people around him I’m sure. I don’t know what the Giants jersey sales numbers look like, so they will have to look into it themselves. But if there are no rules against substituting $1,000,000 on 53 player contracts for apparel sales, why not give it a try so you can free up cap space. Using these numbers, the Giants had to sell a minimum of $53,000,000 worth of player jerseys (roughly 212,000 authentic or replica jerseys) in 2010 and would have to do so every year. It seems like a big number but might be worth while in certain isolated situations. If even half of these number were to work out, that would still be $26,500,000 saved in salary commitments or $1,250,000 per every 5,000 physical jerseys sold. There would be virtually no paper work if the NFL and teams hooked up with a merchant/affiliate program such as Football Fanatics. That program handles all the paper work and even mails out the money to the individual players or they can use direct deposit if preferred.
PJR – Player Jersey Rights could be worked into the contracts at a $1 million dollar annual fee, which would be deducted from the players base salary. When the player retires, he will retain 25% of the Jersey Rights permanently, as part of each players retirement package. Players must be enrolled into the annual Jersey Rights program to qualify for jersey rights at 25% for life.
Whatever the outcome or length of the lockout, I know that John Mara will not panic or make an irrational decision. I’m confident he is working hard to get things back on track. Some of the leaked issues seem to be workable, it’s the issues the public does not know about that have me concerned. What can we do? Have a lockout party of course and wait it out. Remember what I said about things happening before the 2011 NFL draft, if the lockout goes beyond that, we might be in trouble.

This is something that I have wanted to do for a while and think our readers will appreciate the convenience of going straight to the official New York Giants team store if they decide they want to buy something. You all know that too many advertisements can ruin a good website. Pop ups and the loud ones are avoided like the plague. That is why I will not let ads ruin our website. You will only be able to purchase New York Giants merchandise on this website. Of course, NFL gear for the NFL Draft, NFL Pro Bowl and the Super Bowls to be included too. But you will never find the clutter we have all come to loathe. You can be sure your getting official Giants gear when visiting us here. I mean, think of the possibilities, you have Eli Manning jerseys and Steve Smith jerseys and you have a host of other Giants jerseys you can choose from as well. You can always get a team hat if you need a gift for a sports fan. You never see anyone get mad over getting a hat. Other items that nobody ever gets mad at receiving are team T-shirts, just make sure you know the right size.
It’s nice to know that you can always just go straight to specific catalog areas if you feel like browsing too. After all, it can get pretty cold in East Rutherford during the winter at New Meadowlands stadium and people will need to dress warm while they wait for the game to start, tailgate gear might be just the thing you’re looking for. I am proud to have Giants products available on my site, I know our readers are people who represent their team to the fullest. NEW YORK – What a crazy year it has been in the world of sports. I can’t believe we have been up and running for a full year already. I was trying to get our readers an interview with a Giants player for this special occasion and got very lucky, because I have one of the best players on the team answering a few questions for us. I will publish the article tomorrow (Sunday 3-6-11) of an interview I had with a “surprise” New York Giants player (he has since been revealed as WR Steve Smith). I suggest you all come back tomorrow and see who it is that I’m talking about. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Hopefully, we will be able to get more interviews now with Giants players and coaches. I know these are exactly the types of articles Giants fans want to read with their coffee in the morning or at home at night. Some of the other writers here like Josh and Saulo, have been with the website since we first went live. Others such as Andrew joined us last year. I would like to say thank you for all of your contributions and as always guys, I look forward to reading your next articles. What a strange journey it has been to get us here today. At the stroke of midnight tonight it will be one year.
Things will continue to get interesting during the next few weeks with the upcoming NFL Draft, The CBA talks (extended another week), free agency and trades. We will be here to cover it all and give our unique perspective on the team. When Saulo takes a moment from his world travels and gets on his laptop, he usually blesses us with an informed article. We need to read more from Saulo! When Josh isn’t studying for mid-terms or finals, he also blesses our readers with well thought out stories concerning the current state of Big Blue. I am sure we will see more of Josh over the summer. Andrew has been busy lately but he also gives us a great perspective on the team through his work. Thank you once again writers for all that you do and thanks especially to all of our readers who are making nygreporter a respectable family friendly website. We have not wavered from our clean chat policy or managing a safe environment for sports fans.

Dear Loyal Readers,
As some of you may or may not be aware, this Sunday (March 6th), will be the one year anniversary of the creation of nygreporter.com! It has been an incredible year to say the least. As we approach both our one year mark and our 24,000th view, we here at nygreporter would like to take step back and reflect on the year it was. Having started in March of 2010, this site has followed the exact path of a real year in the NFL. As you all know, the seasons official begins in March each year and we have been lucky enough to be here covering the ups and downs of the 2010-2011 campaign.
We were there through all of the botched punts, the 25 interceptions, the horrific and scary losses but we were also there to witness 4002 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, 1235 rushing yards for 1052 receiving yards, we saw 11.5 sacks twice over and a 5 interception season by one shutdown corner. We saw 10 wins, we saw no playoffs, we saw an IR list that looked more closely to the size of an active roster (kidding of course) but most of all we saw a ton of heart from a team that in the end was left defeated yet hungry. I strongly believe that the team has an incredible hunger to win; I see big things in the future for this group of guys!
As far as nygreporter goes? Well, we are hungry too! Hungry to improve, to write better, to write more, to see more traffic and ultimately more success. I see big things in the future for us too. You, as the reader, can expect big things this coming year. We will be here all season long for years to come covering your favorite team, so please, stick with us, support us, spark debate in the comment section, let us know you are here and what you are thinking! We would absolutely love to hear from you! We wish all of our readers the best in everything they do, thank you for sticking with us through our first year we hope you have enjoyed reading our work almost as much as we have enjoyed writing it. Stay tuned, the best is yet to come!

NEW YORK – Everyone has an opinion. Some of the fans that make up the Giants Nation, think GM Jerry Reese does an outstanding job handling the NFL draft (you can include me in this group). Still, there are others who think he doesn’t do a very good job. I’m not sure what the fans see that bring them to that conclusion but I will respect their opinion. Some fans are just die-hard Ernie Accorsi advocates and with good reason but they have to remember that Reese was taught by Accorsi and was given his blessing to take the reigns. I would not be surprised at all if Mr. Accorsi still calls the stadium every once in a while, when he thinks a certain player might be a sleeper or steal somewhere late in the draft. There are certain guys who can never get the job out of their system.
You have to understand that Jerry Reese loves this time of the year. He salivates at the prospect of getting a superstar via the draft and letting them grow with the team. Handling the NFL Draft is work but make no mistake about it, the draft is also fun to certain front office people. The war rooms, the prospect boards and ratings, the months of research, Radio City Music Hall in New York and 3 days of madness that can only be compared to the sleepless nights of an Ibiza vacation that leaves one feeling and looking like a zombie. The guys who work on the NFL draft for Big Blue must sleep for a full 24 hours following the draft on Sunday night through Monday and into Tuesday morning.
The Giants staff have been actively observing all of the players at the NFL combine for the past week and have no doubt made their reports on prospects the team might be interested in. Who will the team bring in for the minicamp and training camp? It’s too early to tell but the fact that Head Coach Tom Coughlin is looking to boost the offensive line is a good thing. In my opinion, GM Jerry Reese will be fine and once again bring in premium talent. Some of the players drafted under the Reese regime include WR Steve Smith, RB Ahmad Bradshaw, S Kenny Phillips, CB Terrell Thomas, TE Kevin Boss, DE Jason Pierre-Paul, OL William Beatty, WR Mario Manningham and WR Hakeem Nicks just to name a few. That is not a bad group of players at all. I have full confidence in Mr. Reese and his staff and do not understand why fans would think otherwise. What do you think?

NEW YORK – I would like to announce that nygreporter has officially cleaned the slate. We have updated the Roster section of nygreporter and we have taken off all of the (rookie) title/monikers of the 2010 draft class. Congrats on making it through your first year in the NFL. We have moved people back into the Roster who were IR as well. This was a very good class of talent. Unfortunately, some of the guys had injuries (S Chad Jones, WR Victor Cruz, LB Adrian Tracy) that prevented them from playing very much last year. Hopefully, the Giants coaching staff stayed vigilant and taught these guys the playbook while they were on the mend. I believe they have and I think fans should get ready for a couple of surprises in 2011, when it comes to breakout stars.
The Giants are a very talented team and just coming into their own. We have got to see some production from the 2nd and 3rd year players or they will risk losing their jobs. It’s that simple. The Big Blue front office will not allow the team to miss the playoffs for a third year in a row and if I’m wrong, I’ll eat my hat. The Giants No.1 overall pick DE Jason Pierre-Paul, like the bionic man will be bigger, stronger and faster this season. The guy looks like a defensive tackle (285 pounds at last count) who can run like a linebacker but it actually a DE. I expect big things from JPP in 2011. Things with DE Mathias Kiwanuka seem cautious at best and JPP would be a solid fill-in for Kiwi and a legit starter candidate in his own right. The defensive end position is stacked for years, GM Jerry Reese is not playing around with the Giants pass rush. Old school theory makes your mind explode when it comes to taking away an opposing offenses passing ability. Shades of Ernie Accorsi here.
Safety Chad Jones is a question mark but he is said to be improving, fans are anxiously awaiting news on his playing status in 2011. LB Phillip Dillard looked great in training camp up close and I believe he will have a solid season. He looks like a natural leader in the MLB position and someone who is intent on winning the game. CB Brian Jackson is one of my favorites. Just a good kid looking to make some big plays and stay on the roster. Many have told me how impressed they were with his college career and I hope he can bring his game up to the next level. It looks like OL Mitch Petrus is a keeper too. DT Linval Joseph might be feeling the heat a little more then the rest of players this season because the tackle position could get thin. The coaches need Linval to perform at the highest level and contribute to the Giants defense. There is one player who didn’t have a very good rookie season and that would be P Matt Dodge. Without consistency, Coach Coughlin will explode on the sidelines all year and that means bad news for Dodge if he can’t right the ship in 2011. The fans want him to do well.
The 2011 NFL Draft is about two months away now but I am already excited about who the team will pick. You will see us talk about draft predictions and which players to watch out for, leading all the way up to draft day itself. I must mention one last ting to the rookie class of 10′. I heard it through the grapevine that you have to play one snap in year two for the rookie moniker to disappear forever, so don’t be surprised if you have to carry helmets and shoulder pads for a day or two more but after that, you’re rookies no more.

NEW YORK – It has been a while since we’ve done one of these sports specials (the rare article not concerning the Giants but the world of sports) but the recent news about Carmelo Anthony coming to New York is too big to ignore. Donnie Walsh and James Dolan are putting together something special in New York and I expect Madison Square Garden to be rocking once again. It has been a long time since I checked the Knicks schedule and made plans to watch a game. Normally, I flip through the channels and will come across a game and watch ten minutes or so before changing the channel but not anymore. I haven’t been this excited to see a Knicks game (the Carmelo debut) in a decade. Head Coach Mike D’Antoni must be licking his chops at the thought of coaching all of this talent.
The Knicks can expect to have season ticket sales skyrocket and a massive boost in jersey sales by the end of this week. There are currently more pre-orders for Carmelo Anthony Knicks jerseys (Carmelo will wear No.7), then there are physical jerseys available. Let the madness begin in New York! The fact that tonight is “Legends Night” at Madison Square Garden (vs. Bucks) will only add to the drama as the team introduces Anthony to the crowd. No one knows if he will play or not tonight but he will certainly get introduced. The guy must be exhausted after this six month journey and the team may opt to give him a short break. But one thing I know for sure is he will play against the Miami Heat on Sunday. This is the game I have marked on my calendar (Sunday 2-27-11 at 8 PM EST).
Interestingly enough, I was at game 5 of the NBA playoffs back in 2000 when the Miami Heat were hosting the New York Knicks. This was the last time I was really excited about a Knicks game. Yes, they have had other accomplishments since then but I never had faith in the teams put on the court. I’m embarrassed to admit that but my interest just wasn’t there. I have always been a fan of the Knicks and rooted for them but it was hard to defend them after those atrocious years. Today is completely different though. Fans can see that New York is trying to win games and become better and the fans can do nothing but respect that. With the ever changing landscape of the NBA the past few years, it seemed like the Knicks had fallen way behind the rest of the league but not anymore.
When the Miami Heat made their “super” team last year by brining in LeBron James and Chris Bosh to play alongside Dwayne Wade, NBA fans were left standing stunned with their mouths open. The Heat simply employed the same strategy that the Boston Celtics have had success with, so can you blame them? The NBA of the future will consist of a few “super” teams dominating the league for decades, if teams do not plan for it now, it will be impossible for them to compete later on down the road.
Reports have confirmed that the Knicks are looking to grab a Center before tomorrows trade deadline but it is unlikely that will happen. Ronny Turiaf will play Center until the team can work that out. Amar’e Stoudemire, Chauncey Billups, Landry Fields and Carmelo Anthony will round out the starting five. Something that is more likely to happen then grabbing a Center by tomorrow is bringing in an all star guard to round out New York’s own “Big Three”. The top name on that list is Chris Paul, followed by Deron Williams. If the Knicks are able to get one of those two guys over the summer, the Knicks will be in the playoffs for the next 6-8 years guaranteed and will probably win one or two rings. When the New York Knicks win that first ring, it will be bigger then the New York Yankees winning a World Series because Knicks fans have been waiting longer for it to happen. I’m extremely excited and ready to see what this new group of men can do for the organization, the fans and the city.

Happy Valentine’s Day Big Blue fans!
Do any of you remember all the way back to elementary school; making a bunch of cards and having the afternoon to pass them out to select classmates? Well, I was thinking it might be fun to imagine which Giants would be giving cards to who. I thought about the past season and the up-coming one (knock on wood), and I made up my list of top five Valentine’s Day givers and receivers for the Giants.
So lets jump into it!
- GM Jerry Reese wishes the NFL would be his Valentine and fix this CBA PDQ. I’m sure he is very excited to have the season officially start, so he can begin to make contract negotiations with some of his 21 free agents. Speaking of which:
- The 21 free agents the Giants have are all hoping to get candy covered cards from their front office man Jerry Reese. Not all of them will be signed back but bigger names such as Smith, Hixon, Bradshaw and Kiwanuka are all hoping to hear that the Giants are interested in further employing their services.
- Matt Dodge and Tom Quinn both are hoping for a bouquet of roses from Giants fans; a peace-offering perhaps or at least a shot at one more season. The other alternative is running one or both of them out-of-town. Both coach and punter with pitiful seasons should really be thanking Tom (Coughlin that is) for not putting them out on the street yet.
- Plaxico Burress hopes to get a dinner date this Valentine’s Day with Eli Manning, Jerry Reese, Tom Coughlin and the state of New York. He is scheduled to be released from prison soon and he is hoping that his ex-team is waiting for him at the gate.
- Eli Manning is hoping to fall head over heels, this Valentine’s Day, with a consistent, healthy, and ,one more time, consistent group of pass catchers. He needs a group in there that he can get comfortable with; the significant shuffling due to injuries did not help the franchise QB.
So there you have it! 5 V-Day cards being sent and received by various members of the G-Men. Hopefully, they all get what they wish for and Cupid can work some magic for our Boys in Blue. Let me hear who you think, from the Giants that need a Valentine’s card, or even better, leave some Valentine’s day wishes for your loved ones! I will be thinking very fondly of someone very special (she knows who she is), we cannot be together on this special day but she knows that I care very much about her. NEW YORK – Readers and fans alike have been sending me emails and asking me if I am bitter that the New York Giants missed the playoffs for a second year in a row. My answer is simple, yes I am. But more then being bitter, I am excited about getting the team ready for the 2011 NFL season. A strange thing to say when America is getting ready for the Super Bowl tomorrow night. I will watch the Super Bowl because I love football but my mind will drift away to the G-Men and what they need to do to improve.
Forgive me for not reporting about the Pro Bowl. It doesn’t take much to figure out why I choose not to write very much about that game. For the proverbial record, I will mention that the NFC beat the AFC by the score of 55-41, in another game that was more about vanity then actual competition. Forgive me for my lack of enthusiasm but I long for the day when the NFL puts on an actual game for the fans. I long for a game reminiscent of the famous “secret” basketball game between the 1992 USA olympic Dream Team players. This is widely considered the best basketball game ever played and nobody but the players and a handful of lucky people ever saw it. In fact, the NFL Pro Bowl is the only game that could be compared to that game because it is the only game that uses a collection of the best football players in the country.
Back to the Super Bowl discussion now. I expect this game to be right up there with some of the best to ever be played. The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers are two extremely talented teams and match up well on paper. I am still taking the Packers to win a close game. I am basically taking Aaron Rodgers over Ben Rothlisberger. I believe Rodgers will have a better game then Big Ben and the QB position will be the factor that matters the most. I know most of you will say it is the defenses that will win the Championship. I would normally agree with that but these two defense are equal in my opinion, so they cancel each other out. The next logical question is, which team has the better quarterback and I believe the answer to that question is the Packers. Fans will not have to wait very long for all of the answer because we are about 30 hours away from kickoff tomorrow night at 6:30 PM EST. Everyone here at the nygreporter would like to wish both teams the very best of luck. So the only question left to ask is, are you ready for some football?
Who do you think will win Super Bowl XLV and what will the final score be? My final score prediction is Packers 34 – Steelers 27.

First of all, let me begin by saying Happy New Year to everyone because I know it has been some time since my last post. However, I had to allow the reality of the New York Giants missing the playoffs this year to marinate. Reality has finally set in and the ill feeling has subsided. At this point, all we can do is take a look back at the 2010 season and try to learn from it, understanding that our playoff absence is deserved. Many Giants fans have a strong understanding of why we missed the post season and many others are still in denial. There is no need for perceptions or assumptions. It is what it is!
Why aren’t we playing in the NFC Championship game? Many factors have stopped Big Blue short of their goals but I will list just a few. Mental and physical mistakes? Take a look back at the Eagles game. The Giants pride themselves on defensive schemes. More importantly, the execution of the scheme is a priority for success. In the last 8 minutes of the 4th quarter, many of the players seemed to be confused and out of position. Poor tackling allowed Michael Vick to be elusive and gain extra yards on 3rd and longs. Deion Grant attempts what looked like a sure sack and Michael Vick blows right by him. Kenny Phillips has to make a play on the TE and if he can’t defend the pass, then all he has to do is make the tackle. Instead, Phillips gambles and allows a touchdown. The Eagles then have the Giants in the red zone. Terrell Thomas gives the opposing Wide Receivers so much of a cushion, the play ends in either a sure touchdown or a setup for a goal line score. The above examples are just a few that contributed to the 2010 collapse in my opinion.
What do I see in the future? Well, the Collective Bargaining Agreement will dictate so much next season. However, let’s take a look at what we have now. We must re-sign Kiwanuka! Also, take care of Ahmad Bradshaw and Barry Cofield, two huge team contributors. Steve Smith has great chemistry and continuity with Eli Manning and should stay. We must keep our WR corps intact and a potent threat to defenses. Not only a threat on the field but a headache for other teams when they have to prepare and game plan. Retain the playmakers that we have because they know the coaches and the system. That is an advantage for any NFL team.
What should we look for in the draft? Honestly, I realize that we need help at the Linebacker spot but I don’t believe it’s an immediate need. I strongly believe we should take a strong cornerback in the first round. We have a strong front four and everyone in the league knows this but in order to be a shutdown defense you need a strong secondary. We have great safety help but we don’t have any shutdown corners. With our first pick in the 2011 draft a strong corner is recommended. I believe we have young talent at the Linebacker position that can be groomed. I still believe in Gerris Wilkinson and the speed of Clint Sintim. We also have a sleeper on the practice squad roster by the name of Kenny Ingram out of Florida State. Just my synopsis from my General Manager mindset. Keep the faith Giants fans!

NEW YORK – The Mara family has been around football since the beginning and the name holds a lot of weight around these parts. The NFL and media deem it newsworthy to mention that John Mara was one of the first to reach out during the CBA talks and prior to it. He tried to work out a deal and it’s all over the news? That means something. The NFL is in lockdown mode and who knows when the final deal will be worked out. Fans are scratching their heads wondering why these talks aren’t on CSPAN as well as the NFL Network 24 hours a day. If both sides want to be recognized and heard (the same as the MLB steroid hearings), then both sides should be heard by all. The fans know what is fair, let them be the judge since they are paying for everything anyway. Get your primary investors more involved.
