After taking a look at the roster and seeing the current New York Giants cornerbacks, I am convinced that the team will draft a cornerback in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. The Giants currently have seven cornerbacks on the roster. It looks like Terrell Thomas and Corey Webster will get the starters roles. Aaron Ross has to return from an injury plagues 2009 season that limited him to very few games. Ross has all-pro potential but now finds himself in a position of having to prove himself again. It will be interesting to see how he responds.
After the starters and immediate backups, it gets a little foggy to me. This leads me to believe it does the same for the coaches and I am confident this will translate into a top three pick in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft. Bruce Johnson seems to be the best of the remaining bunch and I look for him to have an improved season. I remember Courtney Brown from his draft day and had him targeted as a possible Giants pick that year. He will have to live up to his potential and make a name for himself. The CB area was a major concern during the 2009 season. It was second place, only to the safety position as far as need this year. This is an area that hasn’t fallen off of my radar and I think Jerry Reese will grab a real talent by round three.
New DC Perry Fewell is a defensive back guy. He is going to change things for the Giants and make them a formidable unit for opposing Quarterbacks. The expectations on Fewell this year are pretty high from all of the street chatter I hear. Everyone knows that the DB’s are Perry Fewell’s area of expertise and expect that group to have an overnight improvement.

I would like to take a look at the New York Giants wide receiver group today. This was an area of great concern last year for many Giants fans before the draft began. General Manager Jerry Reese quickly addressed the situation by drafting WR Hakeem Nicks with the Giants first pick. As it turns out, the wide receiver group was a bright spot on a dark season in 2009. Eli Manning had a career year throwing the ball to this young group of talented receivers and I see no reason why that trend should stop in 2010. I took a look at the roster today and was surprised to see that the team has only seven wide receivers. There isn’t a single New York Giants WR that has more then 5 years of NFL experience. The New York Giants must have one of the youngest and most talented WR groups in the NFL.
The Giants are set with Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks as sure starters but things get a little foggy at the 3rd WR spot. Sinorice Moss has done very little since the team drafted him four years ago and I am surprised he is still on the team. Domenik Hixon has shown flashes of talent but lacks the consistency required to be a full time starter. Derek Hagan is a depth player who rarely sees action on the field. That leaves us with two final wide receivers on the squad, Mario Manningham and Ramses Barden. In my opinion, you have to give Manningham the nod over Barden, simply because he has more experience. Barden might turn out to be a very good NFL player but Manningham already is a very good player. Manningham needs to get a little more coaching and practice on the little things and he will be even more explosive.
It will interesting to see who is on the final roster come September 4, 2010. The two players that need to be concerned are Sinorice Moss and Derek Hagan. I’m not sure if both of these guys will be on the team for the 2010 season. I would not be surprised to see Jerry Reese grab a young wide receiver in the late rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft. Having TE Kevin Boss and TE Travis Beckum thrown into the passing attack allows the wide receivers to be even more proficient. I expect another great year from the New York Giants WR group. I have a strong feeling that this will be WR Hakeem Nicks breakout season.

The Philadelphia Eagles have decided to give the keys to the kingdom to QB Kevin Kolb. You may have been busy yesterday, with church and Easter egg hunts but by this morning you have probably found out that QB Donovan McNabb was traded to the Washington Redskins. The question I pose to all of our readers is simple, how does this trade effect the New York Giants?
First lets take a look at the situation, which for a lack of a better word is, insane. We have Donovan McNabb, Mr. Eagle, being traded to division rival Washington because the team took McNabb’s “feelings” into consideration. Really? (If the Redskins lose both games to the Eagles, could this become scandalous?) The Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders were said to be the top two contenders for landing Donovan but at the last minute they trade him within the division? Crazy. It would have been nice if Washington had done the same thing for QB Jason Campbell, who has been treated like a guest the entire time he has played in Washington. Apparently, the only consideration Campbell was shown was a phone call, after the fact, by head coach Shanahan and McNabb himself. The Redskins have a horrible offensive line and they do not have the WR corps that McNabb enjoyed in Philadelphia. Taking all of this into consideration, the McNabb trade to Washington helps the G-men this season in my opinion.
Next we have the fact that QB Michael “half man, half amazing” Vick will be backing up who? Kevin Kolb. Perhaps, I am getting old but this entire scenario a few years ago would be considered grounds for a one way ticket to the funny farm. But here we are getting ready for the 2010 season and it is a reality. Kolb will be the true starting QB for the first time in his career. Many experts have said that he is ready to lead this team and most say he will do very well. A new young QB doing very well to me means, keeping your team above 500 and ending the season with a 9-7 record and no playoff spot. So this situation also helps the G-men for the new season. Both teams, Washington and Philadelphia, will suffer at least one year of growing pains for these changes they made. The New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys will be fighting for NFC East supremacy come the end of the year. What are your thoughts on how this will effect the Giants?

Hello Giants Fans,
On behalf of the NYG Reporter, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Easter Sunday. This is a time for family to come together every April and enjoy each others company. I hope that you and your families enjoy this day together. This year, Easter is also a reminder that the NFL Draft is now three weeks away. Soon all of the guessing and analyzing will be over and Giants fans will finally know the answers to all of their questions. Will it be LB McClain or LB Weatherspoon? Will it be DT Price or RB Spiller? No matter who the G-men take with the 15th overall pick, you have to like the moves that Jerry Reese has already made. The team wasted no time in addressing the areas of most concern and continue to surprise many by signing players, as early as a couple of days ago. I have faith in Jerry Reese and the staff. I know that they obviously have the teams best interest in mind and will make the right choices, according to the plan, when the time comes. That is still three weeks away, so for today, Happy Easter!

The New York Giants recently signed RB Danny Ware to a one year contract. It makes me wonder why? Now, Danny Ware is a New York Giant and I mean no disrespect to the man personally but when you look at the numbers, anyone with common sense would ask why. Ware is entering his 4th season in New York and his overall numbers are 88 total yards, 1 TD and 1 lost fumble. That is amazing to me because I thought it would be much more before looking into it. To be fair, Ware has been hit by the injury bug pretty frequently in his short career. He played in only one game in 2007 for 0 yards 0 TD’s and only six games in 2008 for 15 yards 0 TD’s. Last season was his most productive playing in eight games for 73 yards 1 TD 1 lost fumble. Some have said that he is a favorite of Jerry Reese and that is the only reason why he remains on the team. I’m not sure to be honest, perhaps he is just a guy who has yet to get a shot at proving what he can do on the field. As a Giants fan, I hope that is the case because I would love to see Danny performing well. But with this being his fourth season, I think the clock is running out on the fans patience. That is a valuable roster spot he occupies and if Ware doesn’t show the team and fans something this season, he will most likely be gone next year.
As of today, the Giants have 6 running backs on the roster. They are Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Danny Ware, Andre Brown, Gartrell Johnson and Jerome Johnson. By the time the regular season starts, one of these guys will be gone for sure. Will the G-men invest time and energy into pursuing another running back? I don’t know. I have not lost faith in Jacobs and Bradshaw being a powerful one-two punch in this league. I hope they are fully healthy this season and can perform at a high level, like they have in the past. I believe they will. I am also extremely excited to see what Andre Brown can do. I love Madison Hedgecock as our fullback, plowing through defensive lines and making holes for our RB’s. I hope he stays with the team for the remainder of his career.

The NFL has started to do something very interesting, in honor of the 75th anniversary of the NFL Draft. They have started a versus section on NFL.com, where fans can vote on one player versus another. You could have Joe Montana facing off against Phil Simms or Ray Lewis squared up against Mike Singletary. I know this is a question that has been asked for years and something that has been dissected and examined by all fans. But for all of our efforts, we still don’t know the answer.
How is it possible to figure out who was the greatest NFL player of all time? It’s impossible to me. I am a Giants fan, so of course I am going to say LB Lawrence Taylor. A Bears fan will most likely say RB Walter Payton. A 49ers fan might say WR Jerry Rice. It seems like for all of the effort put into this question, the best we can all do collectively, is choose a top 5 or top 10 list. Taylor, Payton and Rice are all on that list by the way. Some have to break it down by offense and defensive players. Some just roll their eyes when asked for their choice. I’m not sure what scientific formula could produce the answer but I am going to stick with Lawrence Taylor as the greatest football player of all time.
We all know he changed the game forever with his unique style of attacking. We all know that he has had off field issues that make some doubters dismiss his superiority on the field. If we start small, say at the linebacker position, can you give me the name of a better linebacker in NFL history then LT? OK I didn’t think so. On to the next question, can you tell me the name of any defensive player who is better then LT? Again, you would be hard pressed but here is where it gets tricky. When we begin to look at the NFL as a whole and include offensive players into the mix, the picture becomes cloudy. Payton and Rice to be specific are just as talented and athletic as LT was. The difference is what they made their bodies do with that athleticism. A running back, a wide receiver and a linebacker. I’m sure some of you have your own choices to throw into the mix and please feel free to do so. But out of the three players I mentioned, I’m picking LT because defense wins championships. I would love to hear what you think. Is LT the greatest football player of all time?

Many fans wanted Antonio Pierce to be cut this upcoming 2010 season. I have had many discussions with fans about this topic and could not let the subject go without a final word on the Giants defensive general, Antonio Pierce. I understand that his skills have declined with age (33) but he was still a New York Giant. It seems to me like fans are forgetting all that he has done for the team. Without sounding sappy or mushy about the subject, the man deserves some respect now that he has moved on. He also left the team with a lot of class by publicly praising the organization and saying he understands the business move. He said he will cherish the time he had in New York and wished them well. What more do you want from the guy?
He has proven to be a great team mate and friend to his fellow players. He is a Super Bowl Champion and Pro Bowl player. He commanded the defense on the field and did his job extremely well, even if he lost a step due to father time. Personally, I was sad to see him go. Now here we are without a middle linebacker and we’re creeping up to the NFL Draft. I am confident that Jerry Reese has a plan and he will execute it shortly. You don’t get rid of a player like AP without having some sort of a backup plan. Perhaps, the team feels like it is time to give someone on the roster currently a shot, but who? Chase Blackburn? Jonathan Goff? No one knows the plan and we must all sit back and wait for it to unfold. I wish AP luck in everything he does in the future and nothing but success in his life in general.

Hello Giants fans, I thought we could do something different today and try to predict the Giants draft picks by position and round. Naming player prospects is fine as well, as long as you list the position next to the name. I have been having some talks with my fellow Giants fans about this and opinions vary as always. Of course, we still don’t know if Big Blue is done with the free agency market yet. So far, they have signed S Antrel Rolle and QB Jim Sorgi. There are positions of need to fill, with MLB being the most apparent.
So for now, let’s assume that the G-Men are done with free agency (which I do not believe). Looking at the current roster and taking into consideration the quality of players that remain at each position, let’s try to figure out what the Giants will do on draft day. Good luck and I look forward to checking out your predictions for the 2010 NFL Draft. I will leave my personal predictions below.

I see LaDainian Tomlinson still on the market and I’m wondering how that is possible? Even a 30 year old Tomlinson (I choose not to refer to him as LT, out of respect for Lawrence Taylor) has still got some gas in the tank and can run circles around a lot of current NFL RB’s. To answer the title question, Yes. Tomlinson could and should become a New York Giant. I could see him signing a 2 or 3 year deal with the team and split carries with Brandon Jacobs. We would need to cut Danny Ware and use Ahmad Bradshaw as a third down back. In truth, Tom Coughlin could just start the hot RB and inter-change them at will.
The bottom line is that having Jacobs, Bradshaw & Tomlinson is a good problem to have. It instantly upgrades us to one of the best RB Corps in the NFL. It might also be just what the doctor ordered for Tomlinson, splitting carries in this point in his career would only extend it. I would keep RB Andre Brown on the roster because he has a lot of potential in the NFL and nobody got to see what the sophomore can do yet. He was injured early in training camp during his rookie season last year. Jerry Reese must have Tomlinson on his radar, even if it were to glance at the prospect of bringing him to New York. I will support what ever choice he makes because he is able to see more then we can.
The Giants still need a middle linebacker as their number one priority but nailing down Tomlinson for 2 or 3 years, will fill a lot of seats in the New Meadowlands Stadium and put the Big Blue running game into a higher bracket. We will have to wait and see where he ends up. Reports are claiming that the Vikings appear to be the most interested at this point.

The New York Giants found the backup QB they were looking for after the departure of QB David Carr. Jim Sorgi was signed to a deal today after passing a physical with the team. Sorgi was Peyton Manning’s backup QB in Indy for six years. The 29-year old Sorgi said that he was excited about working with Eli Manning and helping him in any way possible. I’m glad that the team addressed an area of need rather quickly, locked in and pulled the trigger on Jim Sorgi. However, I do not think he is a better QB then David Carr. I would have preferred to have kept Carr but Sorgi might prove to be extremely helpful in the homework department. The fact that he has worked closely with the best Quarterback in the NFL, is a huge plus for Eli Manning, even if he is Peyton’s brother.
I’m not sure how much field time Sorgi will get, probably about as much as he did with Peyton, since both Peyton and Eli have Iron Man streaks going for the most consecutive starts. The Giants continue to make all of the right moves on paper and have kept their word by aggressively hitting the free agent market. I am looking for one more big signing before the NFL Draft next month. Middle Linebacker is the most blaring need as of today and a rookie simply cannot take command of a team the way a veteran can. This might be a position worth trading a player for, if one cannot be found via free agency. There is a never a dull moment during the off season!
